The Jackson Zoo just can't seem to catch a break. WLBT reported:
A zookeeper suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being attacked by a monkey this weekend at the Jackson Zoo, city officials confirm.
“There was an incident inside the monkey enclosure at the zoo on Saturday, while the zookeeper was servicing the animal,” Director of Communications Melissa Faith Payne said.
“The zookeeper was injured as a result of the incident, which involved one monkey.” Article.

Lifetime disability claim and lawsuit inbound .................
Loss for word/s beyond hope the zookeeper is going to be OK.
I think they meant while addressing the city council, oh I forgot, its one and the same my bad!
“The zookeeper was injured as a result of the incident, which involved one monkey.”
One monkey don't stop no show!
For the time being I'll leave alone the fact that the 'keeper' was 'servicing' the monkey.
just how does one go about 'servicing' a monkey?
Asking for a friend - well, actually for a couple of friends.
monkeys are highly intelligent and can be extremely dangerous. there’s probably not enough resources for proper care and the monkey decided to take it out on a keeper
Where is PETA? Where are the nekkid women protesting abuse of animals? There is no better place for a nude PETA March than the corner of Ellis and Capitol.
Hypocrites!
Do zoo workers have medical insurance like other city employees? I seem to recall reading the city cut those benefits when it retained them following the Zooceanarium / USDA license debacle.
6;38, you missed it! KF had a video a few weeks ago with an "unclothed protestor" on Ellis.
Assaults are a daily occurrence in W. Jackson, right?
The naked PETA chick in downtown Jackson around 2006 was hot. She painted herself like a cheetah. I remember a young banker trying to get her number.
There are some people who cannot resist taunting an animal. I see it all the time with my dogs. I have an in-ground fence and dogs well-trained not to wander across it. Some people, though, walkers or joggers, pass by; the dogs only go so far; and some people take this as license to make sudden moves toward the dogs, speak loudly in a threatening tone, exciting my dogs. All that to say you can taunt an animal into a state of rage. I do hope that wasn’t what happened here.
The animals are more than likely starving! I say let the almighty Mayor & his wonderful administration go to the Zoo & learn how to feed the animals. They can learn how the zoological personnel are trying their best with the extremely limited resources they're struggling with.
Save The Animals & Close The Zoo
6:51 - that’s a workers comp claim. Assuming their policy is in force and payments are current.
"Payne did not know what types of injuries the keeper experienced. She also did not know what type of monkey was involved."
Seems like bs. I'm sure the info is available. Why secretive?
If the zoo keeper had a body guard like the mayor does this wouldn’t have happened. Or does he have several body guards….and why? I digressed but I think you get the idea. Spend the money on the animals care that is paying for the bodyguards. Unless you have done something wrong, you have no need for a body guard, unless, like I said, you have done something wrong and you have to keep looking over your shoulder. Sort of like your dad was responsible for the murder of a JPD officer and you have to pay the piper yourself one day maybe?
I think when your job requires you climb into the pen with wild animals, its reasonable to believe that one day you may get attacked. What do they call that in the law? assumption of risk???
its complete hearsay to think well he attacked the guy for this reason or that reason....we don't know.......it just did .....why?? because its a f--ing wild monkey
it does what it wants to do
in this case......it wanted to bite somebody
6:38 PETA is aware of what is going on at the Jackson zoo. The USDA is the problem from what I was told.
I guess at next year's budget hearings we'll get to hear about how our workers' comp insurance has skyrocketed! But by all means, let's keep control of this money pit so that the Mayor can pretend this isn't just one more failure on his watch.
PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals
The few people left at the zoo are there for the animals. Their salaries are pitiful and there are virtually no benefits. I don't know how they did it during the freeze last year or how they continue to do it with the pitiful resources they have. You sure won't see the mayor or city council there getting their hands dirty. The city makes their job very difficult. Not one cent can be spent (food) on the animals without the city meeting on it and issuing approval.
No I do not work at the zoo.
I don't blame the animals for fighting back. The Jackson zoo is a disgrace and a pathetic place for the poor animals to live out their lives. Send them to some respectful place so they can be taken care of properly and people can enjoy them. Close the zoo and send the mayor packing too!
The city is required to carry workers' compensation. The city does not get to opt out or not be covered due to failure to remit premium payments.
Workers' Comp in this state is the sole remedy for on-job injuries, period. The party who was 'servicing the animal' will, if off work, draw roughly a third of his pay during the time off, plus all medical/drug expenses being covered. (that's why doctors and clinics love workers' comp - automatic payment).
Whether the city pays the difference between weekly pay and comp pay is up to the city and its policies.
In this state, an employer can also terminate an employee who is out on comp, as we recently saw with the UPS driver who is laid-up and seeking counseling (forever) due to what he claims is mental anguish.
Such a termination, however, does not stop comp payments or drug/medical continuation.
You can Milk a System, but for only so long.
F. with crocs, cobras, black mambas, hippos, whatever.. But MONKEYS?? Monkeys are as smart as we are (..smartER, in many cases), they're crazy as all f***, they masturbate on people, & even worse.. if that's possible. Actually, the "worse" is that if they're loose, they are strong as hell, and will bite you with devastating force. You will lose your face, fingers, hands, arms, genitals, whatever.. And leave you with a nice little parting gift, if you survive, to the tune of Ebola, Rabies, or one of these HORRIFIC diseases.
That said, as much as I LOVED zoos when younger, still do, and it's a great, (usually) safe place for kids to see animals and learn about them, I've come to realize that zoos are cruel to the animals. To keep them in "jail," basically - usually in isolation from other animals, "enslaved" in enclosures, that, no matter HOW large that they seem to us, it's a nothing-space to them. You know they CAN'T be happy. I'm sure it's severely detrimental to their mental health.. Purely for OUR 'ENJOYMENT' & $$!! As much as I love zoos, unless there are some (which I hope),that can give them a VERY, VERY LARGE area to live, eat, etc.., 24/7/365, and be around others of their species, etc.., I hate to say, it hurts to say - REALLY - but I'm now in the the strong belief that most all zoos should, sadly, be closed. And the animals, the majority, being now unable to live in the wild, should be extensively cared for, for the rest of their live — in open air, liberating, caring, nurturing environments.. as close to their 'natural habitats" as possible. Yes, we ineed should sadly close the zoos, for the animals' wellbeing. Not to be forced to SUFFER for our few measly dollars.
And...while I'm on a rant, may I say that plastic.. esp. bags, are KILLING our wildlife. They are finding countless pounds/tons of plastic inside of whale/dolphin/shark stomachs; plastic 6/12/20-pack "rings" around so many animals' necks, bodies, mouths; and it is killing millions of animals!! Plastic bottles, bags, everything, millions of tons of immortal plastic, each day are DESTROYING animals and the environment. Our WORLD!! EVERY DAY. Let's PLEASE TRY to use alternatives, recycle, ANYTHING!! We MUST think about things -beyond- OUR own lives/wellbeing!!
