Governor Bans College Football Tailgates

Lord Protector Tate Reeves issued the following statement.

Today, Governor Tate Reeves issued social distancing measures for college and university outdoor stadiums and game day events to ensure the safety of participants and limit transmission in the continued fight against COVID-19.

Working closely with college and university leadership and consulting with state health experts, Governor Reeves signed a new executive order to establish social distancing measures for campus outdoor stadiums that are in effect until Monday, August 31 at 8:00 AM. "I know it’s a topic that we constantly get questions about. It’s something that’s been polarizing around the country—some conferences have opted not to make any effort to play. Some states have not yet put out their plans," said Governor Tate Reeves.

"This is an effort, which we worked closely with the universities on, to set a floor. We took their joint recommendations, and with a little work we put this plan together. This is the minimum that each school is required to do this fall, to keep players and spectators safe while allowing college football to occur." The Governor made the announcement at today's press briefing, which you can view on our Facebook page here.

Under Executive Order No. 1519, bowl seating is limited to no more than 25% of seating capacity while maintaining six feet distance between households, with limits on club areas and suites as well. Additional social distancing measures include:

  • Everyone over the age of 6 must wear masks as they enter/exit and throughout the stadium, unless they are seated. Masks are strongly encouraged while seated.
  • Game day events such as tailgating and rallies outside the stadiums are prohibited.
  • Individuals allowed on the sidelines are limited to those essential for the game.
  • Concession stands are open, though grab-n-go food and drink options are strongly encouraged.
  • All transactions should be contactless and touchless, such as mobile ticketing and cashless concessions.
You can view the full list of measures in the text version of Executive Order No. 1519 here. Signed versions of all executive orders related to COVID-19 can be found on our website at governorreeves.ms.gov/covid-19.

The Constitutional Right to Get Falling Down Drunk and FewtBawl shall not be infringed! What is 'Murica coming to? Commuh-nism it is, ah tell you!

Anonymous said...

Order expires on 8/31, so it will have to be revisited between now and then. Hoping that as the virus numbers continue to dwindle, the capacity permitted will be increased.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out. 25% capacity would still be in the 15k-20k range for Oxford or Starkville. Pretty big liability for the schools to take on, but hopefully it will work out and not too many people get exposed.

So is it rampant narcissism or complete retardation or both?

Me and twenty of my staunchest comrades will be exercising our First Amendment right to hold a peaceful, lawful protest against this order in the Grove on gameday starting at 8 a.m.

Refreshments will be served to keep protesters sufficiently hydrated.

White trash everywhere are outraged.

For the last six monthsTater has handled this thing as best he could.

But this is somewhat odd.

However, it's a fact that not everyone is welcomed into certain tents at Ole Miss.

Define tailgate.

Does this mean that I can park my car in the Grove, just like the old days?

The 2020 football season is feeling very nostalgic. 10 game schedule. Parking in the Grove. The 60s are back, baby!!!!

502, follow the dialog. He addressed that by clarifying that was to make it be in coordination with other existing EO's on the similar subject - and that under all assumptions that it (along possibly with others expiring then) will be extended.

Why you talking bout me. I'm proud to be white trash.

I'm starting to think these guys just like to see their names all over the news every five days.

If Tate, Chuckaway, and others were serious, their "executive orders" would remain in effect indefinitely.

What in the world does five days or two weeks make ?

It's not like this virus might vanish next Tuesday afternoon at 1:37 PM.

Question for the distinguished Governor....what is the purpose of issuing an executive order that expires on August 31 when the 1st game that it could possibly affect isn’t until September 3 at USM? MSU & OM don’t play their 1st game until September 26. Did anyone at the governors office get a schedule??

Doesn't the order expire before any kickoff? You rednecks commenting have probably never been to a college football game, or if you have, it was 25 years ago with a half pint of JD in your white sock.

I am pretty sure the government can’t tell me I can’t eat a pimento cheese sandwich standing next to my car.

11:02, I hadn’t planned on attending any games this fall but I think I’d like hanging out with you.

I can understand no tailgateing in the Grove - shoulder to shoulder.

But the Guv missed the point __ the Ole Miss campus is huge for tables set up here and there for families.

I can guarantee that tables will be set all over Oxford.

I guess Mudflaps never had tailgates.

If one phrase summed up the stupidity, it would be:

"...some conferences have opted not to make any effort to play."

Lessee here....Mark Schlissel has both a MD and a PhD from Johns Hopkins and was a professor of medicine and molecular biology whereas Glenn Boyce was a high school football coach and ran a Mississippi community college.

Y'all forgot the US and State Constitutions has a clause excepting all of your rights in times of a pandemic?

Anonymous said...

Tate went to Millsaps, yall keep forgetting that....

Anonymous said...

That's going to be unenforceable. The rednecks will gather at every available parking lot or vacant piece of land around the school and tailgate anyway. The only way to stop it is to prohibit spectators at the games altogether.

Come on Tate, grow a spine and do what it takes to protect the citizens you are supposedly there to represent.

"Game day events such as tailgating and rallies outside the stadiums are prohibited....

Concession stands are open..."

Gee I wonder why.

I'll be in a dove field or elsewhere prepping. Not watching a bunch of NBA, MLB, NFL, BCS, MCNBC, CNN, NBC, CBS kneeling liberal pandering ass wipes.

Possible early stages of political suicide? Just grow a set and shut us down until New Years and get it over with.

You whiners are pathetic. Your cushy little lives have been totally ruined. How can you ever go on? If this society had been around from 1930-1945 we'd be speaking German and Japanese. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

Anonymous said...

no tailgating at Ole Miss. What are we going to do after the first quarter of the first two home games? This sounds like a conspiracy to sell even more beer at the stadium.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 9:14 with the Mississippi being the linguistics border.

Since people under 50 are more likely to die or be hospitalized driving to or from the game than from COVID shouldn't this be a permanent ban? Quick being a coward Tater and ban driving! If it only saves one life it's worth it! Your freedumb is not more important than life! If you disagree with me hate children! And old people! And minorities!

Am I doing this right?

Anonymous said...

10:00 Yes, you are doing it right. Double points for comparing a car wreck with an infectious disease. Which one can be carried back home and kill someone who was hundreds of miles away?

Points taken away though for not advocating to make driving while intoxicated legal and telling everyone afraid of getting killed in an accident to just stay home. Don't drunks have just as many rights as covidiots?

Anonymous said...

I still think it's cute that some of y'all continue to believe there will be a college football season -- even in science-denying SEC country.

Anonymous said...

4:19 There won't be a season, but I guarantee there will be at least two games. After that contact tracing will show an outbreak attributed to the first one and the rest will be shut down. Tater is going to charge headfirst into this and will only admit it is not safe once people actually spread the virus and get sick.

" I am pretty sure the government can’t tell me I can’t eat a pimento cheese sandwich standing next to my car."

I hear ya !

The best tailgate I ever remember was at Starkville before a Mississippi State/Arkansas game.
I wasn't served pimento cheese, but hog's head cheese on a fancy saltine.
(that turned out to be a keebler captain's wafer)

The best part was the Oktibbeha County moonshine.
Hell, after a few shots . . . I was even ringing a cowbell.

" Tate went to Millsaps, yall keep forgetting that...."

Very good point 8:42!

CS's is fun on game day, but it ain't The Groove.

Speaking of . . . Belhaven has always had some phenomenal parties.
Many are easy to attend, but the really good parties require an almost CIA clearance.

Anonymous said...

Let's see, you can't have a tailgate, eating your own food and drinking your own drink. And it's important not to have crowds, but we'll have 15000 in the stadium. And, ummm, concession stands will be open and beer available.

Keenum might as well say he's an airline lobbyist instead of an educator.

And just how much of the proceeds do the 18 ACT fewtbawl dane bramage players get, Mark?

Naaaaaahh. It's not just about the money, is it???

Won't be much reason for tailgating for either of these cellar dwellers after game 2.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
