Governor Extends C19 Orders

Governor Tate Reeves extended his safe return and county-specific executive orders.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,775 new cases of the Wuhan virus yesterday as well as 43 new deaths.* The total number of cases is 57,579 . The virus has caused 1,611 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 48% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 30,315 recoveries. More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website. The Rt factor is 1.12.

There was little change in the big chart yesterday.

 * Governor Reeves issued the following statement.

Today, Governor Tate Reeves announced that he is extending the social distancing measures under the Safe Return and county-specific executive orders to continue combating the rising cases of COVID-19 across the state.

Consulting daily with state health officials on measured strategies to limit transmission and reviewing the data of the spike in cases, the Governor has extended the social distancing measures until Monday, August 17 at 8:00 AM.

"We are throwing everything that we can at the hospital crisis in our state, and we are going to continue working to ensure the integrity of our health care system," said Governor Tate Reeves to today's press briefing. "I want to underscore again: even if you do not personally fear Coronavirus, the overwhelming of the system affects everybody. If you get in a car wreck, you don’t want to be treated in a tent like we saw in other parts of the country. You want to get the best possible care."

The Governor also announced that eight additional counties within our state had reached the hotspot threshold set by state health experts. Under Executive Order No. 1515, the following counties have been added to the county-specific executive orders with tighter social distancing measures going into effect on Monday, August 3 to help limit transmission: Carroll, Coahoma, Jones, Lee, Leflore, Lowndes, Noxubee, and Pontotoc Counties.

Governor Reeves made the announcements at today's press briefing, which you can view on our Facebook page here.

You can view the text versions of the new executive orders here: Executive Order No. 1514, Executive Order No. 1515. Signed versions of all executive orders related to COVID-19 can be found on our website at governorreeves.ms.gov/covid-19.
 * 23 deaths are due to the review of death certificates.

So how does this affect the reopening of private schools in the metro area whose in-person start dates are before the governor’s Aug 17 extension?

At this point he may as well apply the tighter social distancing measures statewide and go through the end of September. The way we're going everybody is going to make the list sooner rather than later and things are going to get worse if we don't lock some things down for Labor Day. Beaches, public parks, pools, bars, and restaurants should all be closed for the holiday weekend to try and stop the crush of people trying to get in.

I do not believe schools can open safely anytime soon, but if they do the state should provide strict guidance to minimize student contact. Mandatory masks, stay in one classroom, and no extracurricular activities. If it is important enough to require in-person learning then it is important enough to do it without needless risks. You can't trust local leadership to do what is right.

look where the spread is now...rural counties. delta. and there's no way to stop the gatherings in jackson..how can we expect them to stop in places like clarksdale and greenwood??

Wow! Another record day during a record week.

The White House Coronavirus Task Force reports that 71 of 82 Mississippi counties are in the "red zone" for COVID-19 cases. However, Tate still won't issue a state-wide mandate for face masks, which work according to the video that Kingfish posted a few days ago.

Could Tate's stubbornness be an indication of playing politics with the health of Mississippians and the Mississippi economy, just to please Trump? Asking for a friend.

Very dramatic statement, very late leadership.

In the early stages of this, at least some of the cruise ships that had COVID-19 outbreaks gave examples of how controlling the transmission quelled the illness. Now, jails and prisons are showing how NOT controlling it leads to a disastrous level of transmission. For those unaware, the George County jail has had about 250 confirmed cases in the last couple of days. Just like those on the cruise ships, the prisoners aren't going to bars, stores, etc., but unlike those on those ships, they are "gathering." Just like the ships (and the influenza pandemic of 1918-19), a single person or a couple of people introduce the virus into the population. In the case of jails and prisons, the virus is introduced by someone coming into the jail and transmitting it to one member or a couple of members of the jail population (rather than numerous prisoners going out and bringing back into the population). When transmission begins among the population it runs rampant through it when that population isn't wearing masks, practicing distancing, etc. One big difference is that population doesn't have the ability to fully choose what they do, either distancing or wearing masks properly. Citizens do have the full ability to choose and good citizens choose to protect others even if they don't care about their own health. As the numbers are proving, a whole lot of citizens are not all that good and choose very poorly.

It is a felony in Mississippi to knowingly expose another person to HIV or hepatitis B or C, see MS Code § 97-27-14 (2018). It is a crime to carelessly leave anything that would injure a barefoot person on a beach - see MS Code § 97-27-9 (2018). Both are under Chapter 27, ahem, "Crimes Affecting Public Health." It should be a crime to transmit or willfully ignore transmission of this virus and/or COVID-19. It'll (probably) never happen, but it might be a good thing to have a law that excluded anyone cited for not wearing a mask from any future medical care for which they couldn't pay cash in advance. And if anyone with a "no mask citation" tests positive, they are immediately put into a quarantine camp for the duration. Maybe if simply being good citizens doesn't do it for some people, hitting them with some immediate consequences for committing "crimes affecting public health" with help them see the error of their ways.

Statewide mask order won’t work. Those that believe science are already wearing a mask. If you shop at any major retailer or grocer you already wear a mask. A mask mandate won’t convince the anti-science, anti-vaccination, flat earth, never been to the moon crowd. They’ll continue piling into juke joints every weekend with no mask (and no hand washing after pooping) and then show up Monday and exhale on the rest of us. Being #1 in infection rates just comes with the territory of being a Mississippian. Stupid, fat and poor. Why should that change during a virus ??

We would be just fine if we didnt have so many unhealthy people. On the brightside, Covid-19 might allow Social Security to survice another 20 years!

Wow, it’s almost like cheap Chinese surgical masks, bandanas, cloth masks from Hanes and cute homemade masks don’t do a goddamned thing to stop viral particulate from going in or out

We need a statewide order for a few weeks. If people don't want to wear a mask stay home or take their drivers license. Tate needs to get this over with and quit playing. When they whine about their "rights" Tate needs to be a man and tell them to F off.

" So how does this affect the reopening of private schools in the metro area "

It has no impact whatsoever.

Private schools are safer than most government facilities.

The real question is how many more
Nawf'side / Wez'side contests the Jackson Mayor will permit.

That spreads the "rona" faster than eating a chicken leg with Grandma at the nursing home cafeteria.

Anonymous said...

Tate has making a better/honest effort to help people than the Jackson Mayor.

Anonymous said...

@5:54 When your proposed state order expires in a "few weeks", the numbers will very likely rise again. Then what?

Anonymous said...

Piece meal Tate will finally get to the last county once the People of the other 81 are all sick or dying. Fool,

The Governor has taken prudent reasonable measures. Now if you want him to dispatch the National Guard house to house in the middle of the night to check your temperature, see if you possess a mask and then accidentally discover your crack pipe, keep on sniping you sniveling sack of wanks.

Tate the masked ranger!

Woooo hooo!

He is such a coward!

So a few people died.....get over it.

Open up now!!!

Let all the old fat coots suffer and die.

I run my 7 miles a day and I will
Be fine.

Forget UMC. Forget all of them.

Time to take charge!!!!

Remember that Saint Anthony and our Blessed Lady of the DC Birx also now want eye covering.

We're number 1. Bout time. The more infected the quicker we get out. Come on boys and girls, no masks for two weeks.

Some of you act like you need the government to tell you what time, how much, and which food to eat. Take personal responsibility and use the brain God gave you. The governor doesn't have to take an action for you to take personal responsibility for yourself. Yea, I know, you are worried someone else is going to do something you are scared to do. Thus, you want the governor to tell everyone they cannot do it so you don't miss out.

Rumor on this Thursday night is Tater will postpone school till September.

Anonymous said...

Amen Amen Amen. Corona has been the only story( except riots)in the world for 6 months. Why do you need a gubnent official to tell you what to do. The same usual suspects attacking Tater say the same thing on this board every day.

Anonymous said...

I don’t need a gubnent official to tell me what to do. I’m smart and courteous enough to know how to help control an infectious respiratory disease that kills older people and people with other health issues that may not be their fault. What I apparently do need is a gubnent official to tell you what to do in taking simple, remedial actions instead of allowing your selfishness to kill others needlessly.

I haven’t always been an upstanding citizen and I’m very thankful I didn’t always get what I deserved. It’s called mercy and grace, and I’ve been shown a lot of it. I’ll do well to remember that when I’m tempted to feel smug about others getting what I think they deserve.

More importantly, at least football season will go on. Sucks that it will be delayed, but that just means the Lane Train will barrel through into December and then the CFP!

Sorry leghumpers and other inferiors, but the Lane Train, it is coming. And there isn’t a damn thing anyone or any virus can do to stop this mother f’er.

Hotty f’ing Toddy.

What is the point of these rules if they are not enforced? These clubs in downtown Jackson are packed and stay open well past 11pm. Get ABC enforcement to actually do their jobs!

Anonymous said...

3:46 is right. I don't want to see fellow Mississippians lose jobs or businesses, BUT something has to be done different to slow the spread of this down. I am a small business owner. This has hurt me as an owner. But in the grand scheme of things, what's most important?

And DON'T get me started with these high schools and colleges playing football in the fall. I'm probably one of the biggest college football fans you will meet - BUT allowing a sport to be played that is full contact where people will be breathing, sweating, spitting (unintentionally), etc. on one another amidst this pandemic defies all logic except for the money aspect of it.

Conscience calling said...

A lie parading as a reason. “A mask mandate might cause more people not to wear a mask”. Not if they want to go into any business. That is like saying a law against burglary might cause more people to steal. How do you sleep at night knowing that people are dying because you refuse to lead? Politics over people’s lives is not leadership, it is a death sentence. Do the right thing or answer to a higher power than the voters.

But yet, there are baseball tournaments every weekend, with many teams traveling in, staying in hotels, eating out, parents and players piling up at the ball fields.

Now, soccer tournaments are starting up, with more people piling up at fields, staying at hotels, eating out, and teams from out of state will be coming in.

So what's the point of extending orders of gatherings of 10 inside and 20 outside, with hundreds of people at baseball fields and soccer fields?

Anonymous said...

It's going to be a long 1.5 to 2 weeks before deaths begin to fall again, but MS has plateaued.

"What is the point of these rules if they are not enforced? These clubs in downtown Jackson are packed and stay open well past 11pm. Get ABC enforcement to actually do their jobs!" ABC doesn't enforce local ordinances, the de funded police do. Send in the Rehab Counselors.

Over 50 million people are unemployed. There is a shortage of coins. Our economy is in the tank. Flu of 1918 was much worse. No argument over what test worked best then. They didn’t even know what the root cause was. If you got it it was obvious. No testing needed. Either you lived or you died. Same general rules as we are using today for COVID-19 applied then. Wash your hands. If you’re sick stay home. Don’t go anywhere you don’t need to be. Use a mask.

Would take this much more seriously if the testing was legit. No to the rapid test. It’s too sensitive. Yes to the longer and more specific test because it’s more accurate. Will get the results to you in 7-10 business days, Heck, if it’s such a bad virus why do we have so much confusion re: testing and treatment still? Guess symptoms don’t matter. It’s ironic how much testing needs to be done to prove you might have one of the worst viruses ever. To kill our economy over this has been absolute insanity. We have an obese population. Lots of high risk co-morbidities floating around. Of course Mississippi is going to have a high infection rate.

I suspect 7:19 is in the high-risk category (from a weakened immune system due to chronic and extreme alcohol abuse, and pathogen exposure from the anal-oral pathway due to the location of his head.).

Congratulations on all the do-gooders; the ones who think that a piece of cloth on the face will stop a virus. I'm sure that everyone who died in the 1918 flu epidemic thought they had an answer as well.

This is nature, folks. This is a virus just like thousands before over the passage of time. We can no more control a virus than we can control the weather. It will do what it wants to do (because it is nature) and there is nothing you can do about it.

Your only hope, in the simplest of terms, is face it and build an immunity. You may be one of the less lucky ones and die of it, but you are more likely to die in a car wreck, a heart condition, or even another flu strain.

As for those blaming Trump, only God (if you believe) knew what was going to happen. All us mortals are just making the best possible choice with information we have. We are no clairvoyants except that such overkill with the media and closing the economy likely has killed more people (if not their hopes) than any doctor can claim.

In response to 11:20 p.m.: As another person commented on a different post, what about polio and measles? Those are devastating viruses that were successfully conquered through (God-given) science and the cooperation and hard work of many people.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
