It's time to have a conversation about the conversation.
Jackson City Council President Aaron Banks issued the following statement.
"I
have decided to make several changes to committee assignments and to
committees themselves, to ensure that we have a true working committee
structure. We
will have four committees that will have six members; Finance,
Education/Youth, Water Billing, and Infrastructure Ad-Hoc and the newly
created Law Enforcement Ad-Hoc. These four committees going forward will
require great conversation and community input that
should not absorb the majority of time during our regular council
meetings. Due to COVID-19, we must give time to addressing our budget,
ensuring that we address truancy, the return, and transportation to
school and activities for our youth. Also, we must
give valued time to address and work with the administration on the
necessary fixes to the water billing system and the maintenance of our
infrastructure. I have created another Ad-Hoc committee that focuses on
Law-Enforcement, it is essential to provide a
space for a healthy dialogue to address policing, the prioritizing of
budgeting within departments, also violent and nonviolent crime
prevention."

I wonder if we'll go back to doing what we did before we had a police force? Does anybody know when the Jackson Police force was created and what did people do for law enforcement before then?
When you don't have the ability to address a problem head-on
form a committee
I get so fkng sick of hearing the phrase "healthy dialogue" i want to throw up
It's like that sci-fi dystopian satire movie Brazil from the 1980s.
This is what happens when citizens don't understand how government is supposed to function and have unrealistic expectations of government.
What has to be done to address problems is obvious when the people doing the problem solving are informed...there are only so many choices and each will have pluses and minuses.
But, a problem solver in government has to convince the citizenry, most of whom refuse to be informed but rather engage in wishful and magical thinking that favors their interests.
Once a citizenry loses faith in government, citizens become ungovernable. Bad things happen. But, hardly a surprise if those empower only look at the interests of THEIR bases.
10:34. we have a recent example of no police force. the “seattle CHAZ”. for about a week it was ok- the protesters were policing themselves. then the thugs moved in (the kind that were kept away before CHAZ..). shootings/rapes..really bad stuff.
once thugs know they are safe from police...better have that CCW permit..
"Let's have a healthy dialogue about the national conversation about modern policing"
Translation: How can we defund the police?
Can you imagine what Jackson would look like with a defunded police department?
10:41 it's like a lot of dystopian movies and books unfortunately, but thank you for reminding us of Brazil. How about their attitude during the restaurant bombing scene?
When you are totally incompetent and unable to make basic decisions, create a committee. I thought Governors, mayors, supervisors, chiefs, etc. were elected or appointed “to make decisions”.
"...it is essential to provide a space for a healthy dialogue to address policing, the prioritizing of budgeting within departments.."
Bureaucrat-speak for "How can we defund the police in Jackson?"
Let's NOT get too bogged down in conversations. Talk and NO real actions has NOT gotten us anywhere. We need true action and with the way corruption works, this may be like spitting in the wind!! Forming committees is not impressive, especially for things that should've been done in the first place! This 1% tax. Noticed it for the first time on my WM receipt. We've done this before and we still keep getting the same results. Nothing. We are very familiar with the problems, no need in keeping rehashing them. We need viable, SOLUTIONS. Let government work. Seems simple enough, but with corruption in politics, running so deep, anyone who comes with any will to change things for the better, is quickly tarnished. This is going to take someone with the guts of Shad White. He doesn't care what toes he steps on, when you're wrong, you're wrong. COJ has the money. Stop lining your pockets, let's push it towards REAL change, police morale, dilapidated properties, our infrastructure, etc.
Let me save you the time... your ideas suck. You can’t hug it out. The voters keep asking for this and it’s what they will keep getting
More bureaucracy. What could possibly go wrong?
Um...isn't that 5 committees?
Well y’all have to truly look at what’s running the city. It’s a crap hole of Thugs. Let’s the shootings begin. We will be watching from a far
The good news is, the more government screws up, the less people will trust government, and the new generation of kids are being taught just how dangerous government can be. Kind of like having Nixon, Ford, Carter. 12 years or Reagaan and by 1994 America was ready to vote for a congress that at least feigned less government.
Look around, is there really any elected official worth a damn?
10:34, you carried a gun with you for protection, and if criminals were loose in the area generally a citizen's committee formed up and they tried to chase them down and deal out justice. In other words, the model we're apparently getting ready to try out in some of the large cities in the U.S.
Bring on the inept Social Workers and Psychologists. I mean, who in their right mind will work here unless they can't get hired anywhere else. This is gonna be fun.
They going to form a committee on the Siemens money and where it goes that makes the most sense rather than padding their friends pockets? It needs to be transparent. More transparent that the mayor promised on his campaign.
Can you imagine how much worse it would get in Jackson if we defunded the police?
@10:41
Oh yes I grew up hoping that the future would be "Bladerunner" but it actually turned out to be "Brazil" with TikTok.
If JPD is defunded or cancelled then the city will become just like the movie The Purge and they better blow sirens every night to warn people.
So you created an "Ad-Hoc Law Enforcement committee to discuss violent and non-violent crime prevention"?
GTFOH!! Dis too much !!
The Jackson City Council, which Banks is now the President of, has seven (7) members.
One of those members (Stokes) refuses to participate in any committee meetings or adhoc sessions.
So, Banks creates new committees, each of which has six (6) members.
My basic math, taught to me a Central High several years ago, tells me that:
All members of the Council that participate in committee meetings are on all the committees.
Evidently Banks thinks that by doing it this way, he can avoid public meetings, public comment, and public disclosure of anything the Council wants to do.
They will meet in "committee" and then when the Council has an official meeting, they will adopt the committee report.
Great way to make sure the public has no idea what is said in the discussions - the only thing they will see is the 'adoption' of the committee's action.
Slick move Aaron. Guess its the kickoff to your campaign for Mayor in 2021.
How many "discussions" deep are we now?
We need a committee that is unbiased to form a committee that will pick out the members of a committee and they each should get paid very well for their time. To ensure that the first committee is unbiased, we need the mayor to pick out who is going to be on the first committees so he can have exactly who he wants on the other committees, which will be unbiased people.
We'll need to defund the police to pay for this new department.
I'm curious how many members of the Jackson City Council know what the Latin term "Ad Hoc" really means.
Once again, no one is pointing the finger in direction that it needs to be pointed for fear of being call a racist or bigot.
Someone learned a new word - ad hoc - but doesn't have a clue what it means or what language it is.
No latin based languages translate well to AAVE. Take bourgeoisie for example. They've derived "boojie" from it but have no clue what it actually means.
I feel like I'm in a dream and can't wake up. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up!
He says there are four but then lists five. He says two are Ad.Hoc but they all are. Maybe he has no idea what the term means.
