C19 Update: More Restrictions on Bars

The Department also  reported 1,610 new cases of the Wuhan virus yesterday as well as 28 new deaths.*   The total number of cases is 49,663. The virus has caused 1,463 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 48% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 30,315 recoveries.  More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.  The Rt factor is 1.17.

Hospitalizations rose to a record 975 patients while ICUs fell negligibly to 279 patients.  Unfortunately, vents rose to 163 patients.

Governor Tate Reeves is holding a briefing right now.

* State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said nine hospitals did not any ICU beds available.

* Governor Reeves issued the following statement.

Today, Governor Tate Reeves announced his amended Safe Return order, establishing additional measures on social gatherings and events to protect public health as COVID-19 cases rise across the state.

Closely monitoring data from the Mississippi State Department of Health and consulting with our state health experts, Governor Reeves signed a new executive order that amends previous restrictions on group gatherings and bars. The amended Safe Return order is in effect until 8:00 AM on Monday, August 3.

"We are still in the middle of our most painful period of COVID-19 spread to date. We have to slow the spread to prevent our health care system from becoming overwhelmed," said Governor Tate Reeves at today's press briefing. "We’ve seen a tremendous amount of spread in young people. By far, the group driving these high numbers is people in their 20’s. I’ve been talking for about a week about wanting to do something to curb the spread among young, drunk, careless folks."

To limit transmission across the state, the new social distancing measures include:

Social gatherings are limited to 10 or less indoors and 20 or less outdoors. Bars can only sell alcohol to seated customers, and no alcohol can be sold at restaurants or bars after 11:00 PM until 7:00 AM. Previous social distancing measures, such as limiting to 50% capacity, updating floor plans to ensure 6 feet distance between groups, and limiting to 6 people per table, remain in effect.

The Governor also announced that six additional counties were identified as hotspots within our state, adding the following counties to the county-specific executive order with tighter social distancing measures to help limit transmission: Calhoun, Holmes, Lamar, Montgomery, Winston, and Yalobusha Counties.

Governor Reeves issued another executive order today to continue easing the burdens weighing on the thousands of Mississippians unemployed due to the pandemic. With some unemployment benefits set to end on July 25, the Governor has extended the suspension of work search requirements until August 8 and other unemployment benefits listed in the executive order until September 26.

* This includes 11 deaths gleaned from reviewing death certificates.

It is sad, but if you want to slow the spread you close restaurants and bars (to inside service). It is just that simple.

That Rt number is like a kick in the gut. Compared to the 1.1 that it has been previously that means we are seeing a doubling every five weeks instead of eight.

The gathering limit won't have any effect without enforcement. People aren't going to change their behavior because Tate asked nicely, the police are going to have to actively break them up.

I'm disappointed he still isn't addressing fall sports. First football game is just six weeks away.

Too bad Covid wasn't around during the attempt at Prohibition. May of had a shot.

Anonymous said...

3:16 - as with many other facets, fall football issues may be decided by themselves without the Governor having to issue a dictate. The SEC is going to address issues that affect two of our colleges, the SWAC has already issued a rule for their schools. The junior, excuse me - community fiefdoms - has also been addressed. High school activities are being discussed along with K-12 in general.

No need for the Gov to address that yet if those in specific charge make reasonable decisions.

We'll see.

Dr. Dobbs is having a spiritual crisis right before our eyes. I can hear and see the pain and exhaustion in everything he says now. He and Tate are really trying. They have to work with what’s there, meaning us, but they’re giving it all they’ve got. I feel for those two, and I have a deep admiration for both of them now. In this day and age of failed leadership, it really does bring me comfort to know people like them are still successful, landing key jobs, and winning elections. Seriously. I’m not some conman from any campaign or interest group. Just a guy praying for the best for our state and our country. God bless all of you.

We need a catchy children's song for Coronavirus like we had Ring around the Posies for Bubonic Plague.

It needs to be a twerk friendly rap mixtape with incomprehensible autotuned mumbling so the kids will dig it.

It will go viral if we can find a silicon barbie doll to gyrate provocatively in a TikTok video featuring the song.

3:47 - Well said. And an Amen from a common brother, just praying for the best and hoping for survival of us all.

I told you people that Tater Tot was a bad choice. Neither the Tater or the Cheeto should get a second term.

Governor Waller would've had the courage and testicular fortitude to make the hard decisions.

Do any other bars have signs on the doors similar to the one at BB's Live near the Rez? It's on the BB's Live facebook page. HIPPA and Fourth Amendment nonsense, regarding patrons not having to wear masks. LMAO.

My daughter (grown) is going to an engagement party with 300 attendees this weekend. How does Wendy Putz continue to host such large events? She must make some big donations.

Anonymous said...

Ah, yes. Let's put very minimal restrictions on a single sector for 10 whole days. That oughta knock it right out.

Good point @3:29. Most reactions to this seems like a lot of people have forgotten the last 6 months and think that MS is so dumb we're the only ones with problems. Go look at Johns Hopkins website. They have charts for each state and most places have had or are having the same trend line we're on. They also have charts showing the trends corresponding with shutdowns. SPOILER ALERT they don't stop the virus. Also look at all the numbers on the MSDH website, see where the deaths are occurring. Almost twice as many 70+ have died than all other ages combined. Look at the race breakdown also. I love blaming all our problems on young people as much as the next guy, but they're not going out to party then spending the rest of their weekend with gamma in the nursing home. Most of them also don't live with grandparents or see them that often.

Anonymous said...

Why can't he just declare a stay at home order starting at 8pm Friday until Monday at 6am, every week until we get some traction against
The Trump Virus.

@ 3:59... Bill is that you? Waller is a great man, but he didn't want to be governor, and he couldn't "aw shucks" his way through this. He would have folded like a bad tent. If you can't see Tate is doing the best he can and working as hard as possible on this, I can't help you.

Anonymous said...

This too will pass. The deaths will continue whether it's Covid or not. The Sun will come up in the morning and night will follow.

Anonymous said...

Yep.

I really do think Reeves and Dobbs mean well.

But for gawd's sake, can they stop wearing these goofy vests . . . in July even ? The MEMA director was wearing one today.

Slap some pointy plastic ears on him, and he would look like a Romulan (want-a-be) at a goober "Star Trek convention"

Nothing personal against him, he's a very smart man and former Army National Guard Colonel.

But please get rid of the Romulan outfit.

Tate, your county by county mask madate is not stopping the virus. To show you are serious, issue a statewide mask mandate so all Mississippians will understand it is required of them in public. Half measures will not do if you are serious about getting the curve down.

Anonymous said...

4:23 The Washington Post keeps tabs of the infection and deaths state by state and update it frequently. Right now it shows Mississippi has the 3rd highest infection rate and 6th highest death rate in the nation.

Yes, other states are having a bad time too, but we are doing much, much worse than average.

Meanwhile in West Palm Beach FL:

https://youtu.be/zhMMNUghNw4

"CBS12’s I-Team investigated these statistical anomalies by combing through the Medical Examiner’s spreadsheet of all people who recently died of the virus in Palm Beach County.

What they found are “eight cases in which a person was counted as a COVID death, but did not have COVID listed as a cause of contributing cause of death.”

For more color on how a COVID-19 death is determined, it must be an immediate or underlying cause of death. So a gunshot to the head, a falling accident, and or Parkinson’s disease certainly doesn’t fit the defined criteria of classifying these deaths as virus-related.

Eade told the I-Team she’s been digging around in medical reports and said, out of the 581 deaths, only 169 deaths are listed as COVID-19 without any contributing factors.

If virus-related deaths are being overinflated in Florida, is the same being done in other states?"

Most assuredly!

How are colleges and high schools getting around the 10(indoor)/20(outdoor) rule to hold graduation ceremonies right now?

Kingfish said...

Problem is, who is actually going to enforce it?

Dirty little secret of all this is there is no enforcement mechanism. Health Dept will say its up to local law enforcement. Local law enforcement will say it will not do it. Not their job.

Until many more people know someone who die from this thing, which will naturally require more deaths, expect such attitudes to remain the same.

Friday national numbers 930k Tests. Record number of tests. 75k Positive. I think a lot of people are getting tests who don't need it. Putting a stress on the entire system.

Tate can you speak from your heart with feelings. Your terrible at speaking. Horrible. And your our leader. We instill peace and comfort within ourselves and family through leaders. You are no leader sir. Your shy and timid and it shows clearly in your speeches and voice.

5:05, link please. I find nothing to support your claim meant to create panic. The world (based on a 7 billion population) is at 0.228% infected and 0.009% dead overall. The USA is at 1.1% infected and 0.039% dead. Don't know about you but that is not quite at the gates of hell. Take a breath and pray for the reopening of bars.

I've wondered about the total number of tests for awhile.

No media outlet has been remotely interested when I've asked that same question.

Bars are not the problem as much as giant groups and parties. Receptions and frat rush parties. Junk like that. Two old guys at the bar at Martins aren’t the issue. 75 people waiting on a beer at the bar is a big contributor

608 while you are Googling locations where Tate can get some virtual speech lessons, you should take a few moments and research sentence fragments and the difference between “your” and “you’re”.

Anonymous said...

I would say find a way to compensate/retrain these guys affected in the hospitality and entertainment business.
It's going to take another 6 months for 50% to go belly up and never return.
Small businesses will come back first, they always do, but that will take at least 3 to 5 years for that to happen.
Covid is here to stay we can't ignore it, it not going away

Anonymous said...

6:34: You are ignoring that with with just 1.2 percent of the population known infected, many times that are actually infected, many asymptomatic, we’ll never know com the lack of testing, and while.4% and likely many more are dead and gone, our Hospitals in MS are already over capacity and there is nary an ICU bed left when you get need it as you will if you are careless, MS in fact has the 6th highest rate of increase in cases in the nation right now. Left to its own the virus will not stop until 60% are infected. Certain asymptotic young people are superspreaders among the adults they encounter. Anyone who downplays this crisis is reckless with their lives and those of others. Think about it: in any group of 100 at least 2, and more likely more than that, are actively spreading the virus. Downplay it at everyone’s peril. Yes this is a crisis.

7:01 Two old guys at the bar at Martin's isn't a problem, but several state legislators are.

If you want daily COVID-19 Test Results, then look at Calculated Risk:

https://www.calculatedriskblog.com/

Also, please note that the CDC has changed guidelines again:

“For most persons with COVID-19 illness, isolation and precautions can generally be discontinued 10 days after symptom onset and resolution of fever for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medications, and with improvement of other symptoms,” the CDC says.

For people who have tested positive but don't have symptoms, "isolation and other precautions can be discontinued 10 days after the date of their first positive RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 RNA.”

What scared little nazis you losers have been all along. .39% is the death rate. Prob less than that considering half the folks I know who have tested positive were a symptomatic. This paralyzing fear has caused you to endorse destruction of the private property rightS is of business owners(Interesting you never see a shut down business owner agree with it), stopped going to church, and have learned to hate and attack your neighbors who aren’t interest in virtue signaling by covering their face with a mask. I could walk through a store beside you with no mask on you would be ready to sent me to the gulag. If I walk through same store with a cloth mask on (cloth masks do 0 good look it up) you identify me as a party member and have no issue with me.

Y’all can all kiss my ass.

Anonymous said...

My mother is in a nursing home where 90% of the residents (including my mother) have tested positive for this virus. The facility had managed to remain covid-free until the first of July.

I am not a "scared little nazi." The virus got into that nursing home via a worker. Visitors have not been allowed in the facility since early March. I wear a mask not because I like to (I do not) but because I do not want to be the person who unknowingly infects someone else, particularly a healthcare worker who is caring for our elderly.

If you think our elderly in nursing homes are expendable, you can kiss MY ass.

I very confused about wedding receptions. Are they exempt because some are continuing as normal, and they are not seated dinners—people packed in standing around??? I’m not opposed, just confused.

Anonymous said...

So polling has shown that 1/3 of people will not get a covid vaccination. We need 75 percent for herd immunity. So will masks post vaccine be mandated because not everyone is vaccinated?

With no reason to not go ‘back to normal’ post vaccine, will we see a huge spike again?

What 11:00 said. But get both cheeks. Increase testing, increase numbers. The number infected is definitely not the number sick, in hospital, on a vent etc. Fearmongering at best.

9:21 Cumulative numbers don’t mean a thing. Mississippi has a problem right now. And those you linked aren’t adjusted for population. Since I guess you can’t be bothered to even look at the WP home page here is the link you aren’t capable of finding. Mississippi has the second highest current infection rate and the seventh highest mortality rate using the last week’s data. What happened in New York back in April is irrelevant today. They are taking action and are 47th in the nation with a current infection rate 92% lower than Mississippi.

11:00pm and 8:52 am are crude and clueless.

The cases between birth to 17 are climbing in MS:
<1 year old 394 cases
18-29 11081 cases
30-39 7925
40-59 7486
50-59 5685

Remember when the numbers and deaths for these ages were near non-existent even in April?
Remember when deaths in these groups were low or non-existent? Thank God there's only one under 1 year, but there are deaths in children birth to 17.

Yeah, boy, open those schools! Who cares if ages 10-17 are great spreaders? Football? We can make teams smaller as the season progresses! ( sarcasm )

( see interactive maps on MSDH website)

Covidiots, all your claims of only old people and the unhealthy getting this and certainly the only ones dying is being proven BS. It's being proven in those inching numbers we saw back in April and in other countries as well.God forbid you should read academic information from those trying to get a handle on this!

You didn't want to listen or read about corona viruses and how they mutate and how some never go away or get cured or can't be stopped by immunization or herd immunity.

You didn't hear "novel" to mean " we've never seen this so we don't know what it's going to do". You heard, "let's hope it's a "run of the mill" version of corona .

So you Covidiots dismissed the seriousness and continue to do so. You grasp at any straw handed you and refused to do the simple things that could have stopped before it could get harder to control.

Even after two Supreme Court decisions already on your claims, you scream " Constitutional Rights". Sorry, Bubba.

Thanks to you, we might actually have this virus get stronger and deadlier and the treatments working now might stop working and the vaccine will arrive too late to work. Viruses can do that.

Thanks to you, even though your candidate for President you often quoted has done a 180, you are " the right fighters who never admit to being wrong".

You won't keep up with the sudden troubling spikes now in countries that weren't cursed with the ungovernable and which did reach re-opening CDC standards.

No, you'll listen to other "right fighters" ( and some are doctors who never kept up with specialties other than their own and likely didn't see much need even to do that and they are NEVER wrong).

As for me, I hope there is an election. I hope that 7 calls to Russia of late are not about compromising an election or declaring martial law to handle an out of control virus like we see in movies. I hope Portland and Seattle aren't dry runs ( Seattle, really? One outsider mowing down someone inside the barricade and unknown suspect shooting 2 inside barricade whose motive is unknown and could be like the hit and run driver).

And, if you imagine wearing a MAGA hat will save you, you are truly delusional. You will no longer be useful if the worst case scenarios were to occur. Protecting urban suburbs when the suburbs aren't Red? Sure thing. But, that's a conspiracy you can't bring yourself to imagine, much less believe. But, since you like conspiratorial thinking, I'm gonna throw it out.

Maybe it'll all work out for the best. Only the smart and productive and useful will survive and the financially successful saved. I'm OK with that.

Looks like 11:18 finally got honest about his true position:

1. The other side is wrong.

2. Even if they aren't wrong, they are weak (unlike him).

3. Regardless of who is right or wrong, he going to do exactly what he wants to do anyway.

To all that I say OK, go your own way. At least you'll be doing it in an honest way, without having to convince everyone else that you're right so that you have permission. Obviously, that also means you are now responsible for the consequences of your own actions/inactions.

Responsible for what? Not play acting in the Scamdemic? That same illogic that says I'm part of the racism problem for not condemning whites? For not ignoring overwhelming crime statistics? You are out of your freaking mind if you think "not doing something" makes me responsible for the self inflicted harm from co-morbidities like obesity, alcoholism, HIV, of someone else.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
