C19: More of the Same, Including New Records

Stream of Governor's briefing posted below.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,342 new cases of the Wuhan virus yesterday as well as 42 new deaths.* The total number of cases is 54,299. The virus has caused 1,543 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 48% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 30,315 recoveries. More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website. The Rt factor rose to 1.19.

Hospitalizations dipped over the weekend but rose to their second-highest level.  Vents rose to yet another new record while ICUs fell every so slightly.

The Rt factor is 1.19, fourth-highest in America.

Here is the Governor's daily briefing.

* 2 deaths are from the review of death certificates.

Good news - The increase in hospitalizations rates to cases has plateaued. Bad news - Deaths will increase over the next week or two before falling.

If the Rt were increasing from a position of strength it wouldn't be so bad. However, according to the Washington Post today Mississippi has the 4th highest infection rate and 4th highest mortality rate in the nation. The increasing Rt just means we are going from bad to worse.

The Jackson area has gone to hell in a handbasket. Only 5 ICU beds available and that is only because they are transferring patients to other hospitals. One multi-car crash or a shooting at one of the packed clubs could easily result in people not getting care.

More and more schools are having to delay the start of school until September, but at this point it is like trying to catch a falling knife. It is very unlikely things are going to improve much in just a month and we will probably have another spike after everyone goes partying for Labor Day.

I see the supervisor association is charging ahead with their convention in two weeks. Good luck with that. At least the municipal league had the sense to cancel theirs.

You’ve got to wonder why the president and quite a few high ranking Republicans are all pushing the same drug before it was proven to be effective and why they continue to push that drug after multiple studies have shown it to be ineffective. What reason do they have for continuing to push this thing?

So, where does the above "link" you posted come from: "BitChute is a video hosting service known for accommodating far-right individuals and conspiracy theorists. A few sobering points (at least to the sensible). One, note the "suspected" cases are basically flat. That's because, for the most part, doctors can now pretty well tell what is COVID-19 and what isn't, so it is just a matter of a test to confirm the diagnosis. Sure, some come back negative, but most are confirmed. Which leads to the second point. Testing is backed up and getting worse by the day, but when a patient dies with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, that doesn't require any outside testing. Third, notice that the hospitalizations, including ICU and vented/intubated, went down slightly but the deaths went up, plus, the ratio of ICU and intubated to hospitalizations is slowly rising (no, it isn't related to what facilities get paid - if it were, it wouldn't be slightly but consistently rising in this specific proportion). Fourth, this bullshit involving a hodgepodge of mask requirements, from counties to retail establishments, etc., is allowing completely avoidable transmission. At this point, anyone who does not see that masks and distancing help stop transmission isn't willfully ignorant, they are willfully stupid. Given the similar rises and similar lack of mask and distancing enforcement in LA, AL, GA, and FL, it is going to get much worse before it gets better even if the willfully stupid miraculously change in the coming weeks. Anyone who thinks this virus and COVID-19 is limited by regional geography, especially when there is unfettered interaction within that region, is badly and sadly mistaken.

And as an aside, even with the immunity law, establishments that pay lip service to requiring masks and/or distancing but don't fully enforce them are, based on MSSC precedent, acting in at least a justiciable manner by stating they require masks and/or distancing (arguably assuming duties they didn't previously have) and then, failing to enforce those things (negligently failing in that assumed duty when patrons understandably relied upon, particularly, that assumption for their health and safety). For those that care, start with the MSSC opinion in Cheeks v. AutoZone, Inc., 154 So. 3d 817 (2014), including the dissent and its argument, and go from there.

Consider the Diamond Princess, cruise ship a perfect test case as you’ll ever get. For one month over 3,000 passengers and crew were confined to this petrie dish and not allowed to disembark while SARS-Cov-2 made the rounds. Yet 83% never contracted the disease (and of the 17% who did, 58% were asymptomatic). How is that possible? How is it possible that 83% never got it unless they were naturally immune?
Let me give you an even more fascinating example from 1918, which Gina Kolata relates in her marvelous book FLU. As you no doubt know, the 1918 influenza epidemic was the mother of all infectious diseases. It killed young and old indiscriminately, and COVID-19 doesn’t even register as a blip on the radar in comparison. Desperate for answers, Navy doctors in Boston designed a study to help understand what caused the disease to spread. “The subjects were an unfortunate group of 62 sailors who were imprisoned for crimes committed while in the service. If they agreed to participate in the study, their military records would be wiped clean. Every last sailor agreed, which may say more about life in a military jail than about their rational decision-making abilities. The Naval doctors transferred their subjects to Gallops Island in Boston Harbor and then did their best to give each man the flu. They began by collecting mucus from the noses and throats of men already desperately ill and spraying the mucus into the noses and throats of the subjects. They dropped a batch into the eyes of some. One volunteer had a swab directly from a sick man’s nose inserted into his own nose. Doctors drew blood from one sick man and injected it directly into a healthy one. To simulate reality, ten subjects were taken to a hospital where patients were dying from the disease. Each healthy man was instructed to approach a sick man on his cot, engage him in conversation, and inhale the sick man’s putrid breath. The sick man was told to exhale deeply and to cough five times into the volunteer’s face. Each volunteer did this with ten different patients. Of these 62 poor sailors, how many do you think got the flu? Ben: “I’m feeling sick just thinking about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if every single one of them did, but I’ll say 50 to be conservative.” Sam: “Try goose egg. None got the flu!
So the Convid-19 virus is way over hyped.

Yep, I do feel for the school districts that are still trying to figure out the best way to educate the their kids.

My jaw dropped when I heard the Canton Public Schools we're going 100% "virtual".

My Gawd !

I lived in Canton for eight years. That's one of the poorest public school "districts" in Mississippi. I would guess 85% of the people in Canton can't afford basic home internet service.

But what do I know ?

4:59: Just keep thinking the pandemic is over-hyped, don't wear a mask, and suffer the consequences from the virus. The virus is stronger than you and will eventually find you. It does not care about you libertarian bs.

Anonymous said...

4:59: Do you really think we can afford a culture war over the pandemic in the middle of this crisis? We need the solutions that peer reviewed science offers (not conspiracy theories or junk science) because there is no other way in the real world. There is no proven immunity to Covid-19 except for those who have actually had Covid-19, and then the duration of the immunity is unknown. Until we get a vaccine you need to wear a mask and encourage others to do so as well.

Anonymous said...

@4:59, interesting, but you failed to mention what was 'learned' from those experiments. At the time the Spanish Flu (which is a totally different virus than COVID-19, thus COVID-19 being denoted as a 'novel virus') was killing hundreds of thousands. It was a clear threat, and was spreading. In the experiment done on the Island, the results were perplexing, just as they are with all new diseases. As the report from those experiments says:

"Rosenau was clearly puzzled, and he cautioned against drawing conclusions from negative results. He ended his article in JAMA with a telling acknowledgement: “We entered the outbreak with a notion that we knew the cause of the disease, and were quite sure we knew how it was transmitted from person to person. Perhaps, if we have learned anything, it is that we are not quite sure what we know about the disease.”69 (p. 313)

Read again - he "cautioned against drawing conclusions" from the experiment and that we learned that "we are not quite sure what we know about the disease."

There is no doubt that just as in 1918-19 there are many things that we don't know about the current novel virus, but what we do know is that its not the same thing as the regular flu, its not the same virus as the Spanish Flu, and that it has a higher transmission rate than either of those diseases has.

And we know many ways that they can be transmitted.

But, since you can cherry-pick your choices of studies, when in fact there were thousands of studies between the 1892 and the 1918 pandemics on the various causes and impacts of those disasters and this one study provides an answer you like, continue to spread your spittle wherever you think appropriate. I just hope that I don't get anywhere near you or your family, assuming you have one that will claim you and your 'don't give a damn about anybody or anything' attitude.

4:59 The Diamond Princess wasn't bad simply because they locked the ship down on February 4, shortly after the first case of a passenger was confirmed and only two weeks after he was on the ship.

I'm assuming you know how contagious infections work. One person gets it, passes it on to a few more who pass it on to a few more and so forth. With 3-5 days from infection to contagion, it is not unexpected that the disease spread to only 700 people in the roughly 5 infection cycles that took place before the quarantine was implemented.

The lesson to take from the Diamond Princess is that quarantines work.

4:01, Thank you for the case citation on foreseeability and assumed duty. BTW, I detected a distinct hint of sour grapes in a subsequent case written by Justice Waller, in which he referenced the Cheeks case with the qualifier "regardless of the merits," or some such.

I still agree with others who have posted comments that causation would be a huge problem. Proving where exactly once contracted an infection has almost always been a problem in MRSA and similar cases.

On another note, I find it really funny that one of the experts in the Cheeks case was named Daubert.

I find it interesting that the same people who lambast a 65 year old proven drug (HCQ) safely used for decades and denounce its effectiveness, are the same ones who will happily line up for a Fauci/Gates injection that’s being rushed into production. Don’t take a pill that’s as safe as Tylenol, but sure—inject me with whatever’s in that syringe that was cooked up last month!

The truth is that the medical establishment and media want the pandemic to continue. It hurts Trump and it scares people into compliance, and hospitals and states can continue receiving additional funding for their Covid load.

HCQ taken at the onset of Covid diagnoses in the outpatient setting saves lives. It would have saved thousands had it been implemented. I’m covered—are you? Is your mom? Is your grandmother? Is your uncle?

Does it concern ANYONE that your state would rather people die in the hospital than try anything possible to save lives before they get sick enough to be hospitalized? We are talking about a few pills taken over the course of a week.

Please call your legislators. We should at least have the CHOICE to save our own lives and the lives of our loved ones—and sadly this drug has been turned into a political football and physicians have been scared into not prescribing it—not because it’s not effective—but because they don’t want the backlash.

4:59PM wrote/quoted, "Navy doctors in Boston designed a study to help understand what caused the disease to spread. 'The subjects were an unfortunate group of 62 sailors who were imprisoned for crimes committed while in the service.'"

Trolling aside, here's a few facts you left out (and you got some things wrong). First, the potential pool of volunteers were in the hundreds and of the 62 that accepted, all had been previously and recently exposed to the virus for several weeks and it was later realized that all or most had likely developed immunity. One of the doctors involved died from influenza. It was theorized by some that the reason all or many of these men had volunteered was that since they hadn't gotten particularly sick previously, they wouldn't likely get really sick in the experiment. Consider these were criminals and that the cunning criminal survival instinct was just as real in 1918 as it is today. Boston was the "landing zone" for the pandemic in the US. It started with literally a couple of cases and killed nearly 700,000 people in the US. But that was 1918, not 2020, and while thankfully many people are much more aware, sophisticated, and have made the most of the many advantages more advanced and experienced science provides, sadly many are just as stupid as stupid people have ever been.

Anyone who disputes that masks and distancing help prevent transmission is an idiot, plain and simple.

HCQ was pretty much the standard of care for a while after Trump touted it as a gamechanger. If it were as effective as some would like the public to believe you would have seen the death rates drop significantly very quickly in the following month. Guess what? It didn't. HCQ probably does have some effectiveness, particularly when given either before infection or very shortly thereafter. However, it most certainly isn't the miracle cure that will make COVID disappear.

My wife has lupus and she was very interested in the anecdotal story from China because she has been taking HCQ for a while. She talked to her doctor at the University of Alabama and he said he had seen multiple patients taking HCQ come down with COVID and certainly didn't recommend she reduce her level of precautions on the hopes that HCQ would protect her. His belief was even if it helped, it didn't help much.

7:38PM wrote, "I still agree with others who have posted comments that causation would be a huge problem."

I suspect you know this, but for those that don't, "prove" in a civil tort case basically means convincing a jury that your argument is 50.01% more likely than not and doing it with just enough evidence so as to avoid a JNOV (and appeal of the denial or granting).

Consider: assume a person who will testify without rebuttal that they have been at home for 15 days (a key number - the MDH says that even with a positive test, 14 days is "presumed recovered") and they can not only offer witnesses to that fact but can also supply cell phone records, etc. They finally go to a restaurant or large retailer and then go home. Two days later, they get sick and test positive for COVID-19. No one can predict what a jury (or judge(s)) will do, but I'd suggest you have at least a real potential for surviving the MSJ and going to trial, which means you have a real potential for a settlement, depending on the Defendant(s) and their insurance company.

Of course, the economics mean that you (probably) won't have lawyers fighting to sue "Mom's Diner," but larger establishments or large retailers with either insurance or deep pockets? Plaintiff's attorneys are suffering already and at least some will take cases. Now, start weakening the Plaintiff's facts - at what point do attorneys think better of taking the case? I'd submit while it will depend on what happens "on the ground," there are a lot of hungry PI folks out there not making their nut. But if and when one hits a lick, it'll snowball and billboards will go up, etc. Just one person's opinion and I readily acknowledge it could go a completely different route.

Many high-quality studies have found no evidence that hydroxychloroquine, when used with or without the antibiotic azithromycin, as touted many times by Trump, helps treat coronavirus infection or prevent serious disease from it. They include studies commissioned by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization and universities in the U.S. and around the world.

Because of the lack of benefit and the risks of serious side effects such as heart rhythm problems, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently revoked its brief authorization of emergency use of the drug for COVID-19. NIH treatment guidelines also specifically recommend against hydroxychloroquine’s use, except in formal studies.

Countries that make HCQ available prophylactically or prescribe it early in course of Covid diagnosis have much lower incidence of mortality. In many countries in the world you can purchase HCQ over the counter like Tylenol. It was never considered a controversial drug until Trump mentioned it.

Thousands of people didn’t have to die from this.... Reeves doesn’t care about your grandma and neither does Dobbs. Hopefully you can do some research to help save your family members if the time comes. The time to treat, like so many other illnesses, is BEFORE someone is so sick they have to be hospitalized.

HCQ Prophylaxis: (200 mg tablets 2x per week)
Additionally keeping your immune system strong is important. Consider eating as healthily as possible and upping your Vitamin C & D intake

Outpatient Treatment: (speak with your Dr about your options if you/your loved one are Covid positive and high risk)
HCQ/Zpack/Zinc (200 mg tablets HCQ 2x per day for 7 days) (25-50 mg zinc 1x per day for 7 days)
Budesonide breathing treatments to alleviate lung inflammation (1-2x per day for 7 days, then reassess)
These doses can be adjusted depending on the patient’s comorbid conditions and health status.

Inpatient Treatment:
Dexamethasone (Decadron) is showing promise in the inpatient setting for those on ventilators/oxygen
Remdesivir is the only FDA drug approved in the inpatient setting, however patients are usually critically ill at this point and strict criteria must be met to even qualify for it

There have been “high quality studies” done in a hurry to discredit HCQ which have subsequently been redacted because they were shown to be false or done with conflicting interests and in bad faith. In some instances they gave patients toxic loads of HCQ which killed them, or waited until the patients were nearly dead before treatment. Lots of money rests on HCQ being discredited—it’s a cheap generic drug that no one profits from, unlike new Remdesivir or Gates vaccines. Follow the money. My post is not for the trolls, it’s for people looking for real, safe, attainable solutions to end this pandemic and save their loved ones.

Not the hydroxychloroquine nonsense yet again. For those that are still beating that drum, read up on Plaquenil (a rheumatoid arthritis med version of it). If it were prophylactic, lots of folks who were already taking some version of hydroxychloroquine would be immune. Those patients weren't and aren't immune. If it were a "cure" or merely had significant and meaningful efficacy as a prophylactic, a treatment protocol, or even a palliative, the data showing that would be overwhelming. There would be no question and with the amount of both the drug and the disease out there around the world, that information couldn't be hidden even if this or that government entity wanted to hide it.

Moreover, it isn't a "risk free" drug with no serious potential side effects. You can seriously injure or kill someone with it. Folks can wish and hope all they want, but the simple fact is that the data pretty clearly shows that efficacy as either a prophylactic, treatment, or palliative against COVID-19, or prophylaxis against SARS-CoV-2, is not indicated. Add to that the potential danger in patients with unknown histories.

Lastly, I'll point out that Pichal, the AlphaGoogle CEO, and the Zuckster, along with Cook and Bezos, are going to be before a Congressional panel today. The Donald's Dr. Batshitcrazy video got popped, Donald Jr. got his Twitter neutered for the day, along with lots of other take-downs of various COVID-related misinformation. If I were posting to, or especially running, anything on any platform owned by FB, Google, Twitter, etc., I'd be very careful lest one or all of those companies decide to make a preemptive defensive move by really firing up the algos and playing "whack-a-loon" with any- and everything their algos say is "misinformation" or "enabling the spread of misinformation." I think folks might discover that shouting "FIRE!" in a crowded theater isn't protected speech so getting popped for shouting "NO MASKS!," "HCQ CURES COVID!," or any other sentiment the owner of a privately-owned platform doesn't like won't even merit constitutional consideration.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
