Money from big plaintiffs’ lawyers from both outside and inside our state is pouring into the race for Attorney General at this late date in an attempt to influence who directs legal fees in our state.
State Treasurer Lynn Fitch has accepted nearly $160,000 from plaintiffs’ attorneys in a bid for the Republican nomination. This is money from the very members of the bar who have profited off our state’s legal system, chasing high-dollar settlements against businesses in our state for years. And in most cases, as can be seen on the accompanying chart, she is accepting contributions from the very plaintiffs’ lawyers who contributed to Jim Hood’s campaigns for the four terms he was in office.
For the past three decades, Republicans have complained about the Attorney General’s office being used to enrich the AG’s friends and philosophical soulmates at the expense of Mississippi businesses and taxpayers. But today, we have one Republican candidate being funded by the same big money plaintiffs’ attorneys who have received millions of dollars from contingency fee contracts on cases handed to them by Jim Hood’s administration, while making big contributions to his campaigns.
