Elections are almost upon us. While there are many new faces asking for our votes, there problem of deciding whether to vote in the Democratic or Republican primaries is quite old. Which Hinds County primary should Republicans vote in today?
Voters in Madison and Rankin Counties do not face the same dilemma as those in Hinds County. The counties are dominated by Republicans (except for the northern part of Madison County). Sheriff, Supervisor, Representative, Treasurer, Governor and the rest of them- the races are in the Republican primaries. Thus they can go to sleep election night knowing they were good little voters of the Republican party.
However, Hinds County voters must decide every four years which means more to them- state or local races as the real action is usually in the primaries. This problem is especially acute for Republican voters as the local races affect them more in a personal way but they want to be good Republicans and vote for their candidates for Governor.
Make no mistake, there are many Republican votes ins Hinds County:
November 2016 Presidential Election: 24,813
March 2016 Presidential Republican Primary: 18,433
August 2, 2011 GOP primary: Nearly 15,000 votes
2012 Presidential election: 27,595 votes
2012 Republican Presidential primary: 14,807 votes
The Democrat votes in 2011 were more telling:
August 2, 2011 Democratic Primary: 30,000-37,000 votes, depending on the election.
2012 Democrat Primary: 23,369 votes
2012 Presidential election: 73,100
Thus there are much more Democrat votes in Hinds County than Republican votes BUT Republican voters can make a difference - in a Democrat primary. There were only 35,068 votes in the 2015 Hinds County Democratic primary.
Republican voters face a choice on Tuesday in Hinds County: Should they vote in Democrat or Republican primary? It is a tough choice this year. There is a strong chance the Republican races for Governor and Attorney General will have runoffs. Runoffs that will mean more than a little bit to quite a few GOP voters. The Republican voters in Hinds County tend to be concerned about crime. Thus they have to decide which is more important: electing a Sheriff and District Attorney or electing a Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Treasurer. Not an easy choice.
The election results don't lie and there are more than enough Republican votes in Hinds County to make a difference in key races next week.
Just something to consider today when going to the polls.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

It’s a tough choice but I have to believe the governors race is more important. Leave Jackson to its problems, a new sheriff won’t change much.
Tho Golden Rule- Those who have the Gold, make the rules. Now everyone- go out there and "Change the World" today!
I'm a "vote for the person, not the party" kinda guy and it really pisses me off that my vote for individuals has been disenfranchised in the primary.
@9:11
IMHO if a candidate is willing to identify as a D these days it tells me all I personally need to know about the person.
How ironic. The ranks of Hinds Republicans have never been thinner but they can still play something of a spoiler role -- for the time being -- in a Democratic primary. The only statewide race where they can be the difference is AG.
That's still quite a bit of Republican votes.
The elections for District Attorney, Sheriff and Supervisor will have a more direct bearing on property values in Hinds County than any race on the Republican ballot.
I'm very conservative and live in NE Jackson. I voted in the D primary and had to write in a few candidates. Pissed me off that we have to vote in a primary by party. Tells me a lot about the state.
What is sad is the fact that Mississippi politicizes its law enforcement. There should be no party affiliation for sheriff or district attorney.
I hear in Raymond they just didn't show up with the Republican ballots today. If that would have happened to the Democrat ballots, you'd have the ACLU and the rest of the letters screaming foul, the Reverends and those sissies in the bowties from Pelahatchie showing up, and Stokes would be getting interviewed with the meat sweats rolling off his forehead. Instead its just quietly talked about.
I think many Republicans may agree with you 9:49 but the vast majority of Democrats do not and will not.
F*ck that sh*t - I voted in the Republican Primary any opportunity to vote against Tate Reeves, Buck Clark, and Mark Baker was clearly worth it.
Any statement from the Comrade Mayor Lumumba on who he is endorsing?
9:38 nails it. Our primary system is stupid and hails from the days of post-reconstructionism.
And thanks Kingfish for posting this, people forget there are a lot of republicans in Hinds County. In the last presidential election, Hinds was tied for 5th most in the state for votes for the GOP candidate, right there with Madison county. State leaders tend for forget that.
If you are in Districts 2 or 5, you better vote democrat and you better vote to keep McQuirter and McGowan, or this place is right back in the hands of Kenny Thompson, Stokes and Lumumba.
Your vote won't make a difference in the governor's race, but it might here.
Ah, the use of the term "Democrat" instead of "Democratic". Not that anyone takes you as a serious, impartial journalist but you could at least try to pretend to be.
That's why you move out of Jackson.
D only in Hinds Co. One poll didn’t have the R table ready and asked a Lt. Col. with the highway patrol I’d he would consider voting D. that’s good political stuff there.
11:48
Tell that to all of the old newspapers in the country called the So-and-So Democrat
Just because the democrats tried to rebrand themselves and wikipedia has frozen their wiki to effectively memory hole the proper use doesn't change the face that democrat is singular of the plural democrats
WOW, 9:33 AM!! Aren't you the narrow minded one? Kind of slim on the friends list I would imagine. Your ridiculous comment tells us all that we need to know about you! Good government by good people rise above R and D. I'm angry that I had to choose one ballot over the other.
Republicans only come to NE Jackson and woodland hills for the fundraisers. Even Marco Rubio,Bush, kasich... Romney all hold dinner parties at houses in eastover and woodland hills. These elites don't understand a day of true work if it bit them in the a$$... these NE Jackson liberals and republicans alike turn me off from all of the candidates they endorse. Count Andy taggart as one that fundraised in fondren. He's a liberal in hiding.
9:49 AM
I completely agree with that. Two things that should not be politicized are Sherrifs and Judges. I think voting for a judge is so backwards. They should be nominated. Also voted in the Republican against Tate.
@1:57
I am male, white, straight, christian and capitalistic. I don't want socialism, open borders, government controlled healthcare or to kill babies in the ninth month of a pregnancy. Why in the world would I vote for someone who aligns them self with a party that hates me and espouses everything that is 180 degrees opposite of who I am and what I believe in ? For the record, based on your un-called for personal insults, I can clearly tell what party you are affiliated with.
3:27, I assume you are referring to democrats but you surely don't think that the sheriff or the DA or the tax assessor have anything to do with "socialism, open borders, government controlled healthcare or to kill babies in the ninth month of a pregnancy"?
Because a democrat is going to win each of those positions today whether you want to associate with them or not.
@3:37
Assume ? Surely you jest .
"Leave Jackson to it's problems"
Good luck getting to a poling station to vote. So many bridges out and all.
@3:05PM...I agree 100%..Mr. Taggart is a liberal masquerading as a conservative.
This is (or should be) a rhetorical question. If you're in Hinds County, you vote in the Democrat primary, if you want your vote to matter. Whoever wins the D primary will be your next representative, at least in all of the local races.
I live in South Jackson and the poor poll workers at the R table were truly lonely and falling asleep. I had to stand in line (as usual) at the D table.
We have some good candidates running (finally!) against some true train wrecks in some extremely important races, like DA. I felt the most important vote I cast was the one AGAINST Jody Owens. Sadly, he will probably win it.
Oh, and I voted for SPOONER for Sheriff. I know the SPOONER guy on here will be thrilled.
What would Hinds county look like if the 14000 Republican voters could have voted for Sheriff, DA, district supervisor, etc?
@ 9:24
To be clear... many traditional Republican voters in Hinds county city of Jackson in particular voted in democrat primary yesterday. Obviously more in Clinton should have as McQuirter lost to Dumb dumb wife abuser Archie. Some people never learn. That's how sheriff McMillan was defeated also.
