Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba stood up for his police chief last night. The Mayor went to WLBT studios last night and discussed the suicide of James Hollins and rape of a 15 year-old girl with Howard Ballou and Melissa Faith Payne. He said Police Chief James Davis acted swiftly and appropriately in handling the investigation of Hollins. The video is posted below.
The Mayor said Chief Davis contacted him yesterday. He said the Chief wanted to immediately suspend Hollins. Command met with Hollins and informed him of the charges. Hollins signed a notice. He said the "Chief, in my opinion, took very swift action." Mayor Lumumba later spoke to Howard Ballou (start at 4:25).
The Mayor said the Chief acted "immediately." "I don't know what else he could have done," said the Mayor. Hizzhonor said suspending him was the toughest option available while an investigation took place.
Well, here is what a JPD general order states:

Just to be clear, when you say "rape" in your post, is that statutory or forcible? Neither is excusable, but there is a serious difference between the two.
Why is the newscaster laughing in this video when LaMumble says "I won't put on my lawyers hat"? There has been a rape and a suicide.
I don't understand why the chief of police has to contact the mayor before suspending an employee of the police department, when the chief "retains the exclusive right" to make that determination.
9:50 Victim was 15. Statutory. No claim of forcible AFAIK.
Did anyone else see and hear the mayor give his statement? Every other word out of his mouth was “ah”; appeared he was making up every word in his statement off the top of his head. Obviously, he was not prepared for this; when his lips are moving, he’s lying!
It's only the perception of rape.
@10:12 AM - The chief had to ensure that the officer wasn't a contributor to the mayor's PAC before he suspended him.
Chief knew about the allegations Saturday and did nothing until Sunday. This Chief is not fit to serve in that role. Lumumba is only holding on to him because of pride.
I’m not sure anybody here has enough facts to say the chief should be fired. You don’t know what inquiry or investigation was being done. And you better believe that all chiefs hear a lot of wild allegations all day long.
Make Vance the Chief
Right - "Make Vance the chief". Vance always got those media reports right over the ten years he read them. We need somebody who read and state stuff decisively, not some mealy mouth who might get it wrong. Never mind that Vance has never apprehended a criminal suspect or cuffed a punk. He da man.
2:27 missed the day they covered cynicism in class.
