State Representative Doug McLeod and his wife, Michele, issued statements concerning the Representative's recent arrest for misdemeanor domestic violence. The George County Times reported yesterday:
Mrs. Michele McLeod, NP:
I would like to briefly address some of the recent events and the media coverage of them. First, Doug, and I, would like to express our deep gratitude to our friends and family who have been so supportive throughout this matter. We would also like to thank the community in general for their understanding and their support in this matter. We realize how very fortunate we are to have such family, friends and neighbors in this wonderful community and elsewhere. We are grateful for your thoughts and prayers while we continue serving the community and our local area residents.
As many of you are aware, I have devoted my life to the medical field in an effort to help others while Doug has been active in the community, has operated a local small business for many years and has now continued his service in the public sector by representing the great citizens of our area in the Legislature. We have been married for 35 years, and our love and appreciation for each other have seen us through the good and bad times.
Though we understand the media’s desire to immediately engage in speculative reporting in any matter such as this, the taking of things out of context has been surprising. We are not the people who have recently been displayed in certain stories. While Doug nor I claim to be perfect, the twisting of information has misrepresented me and the truth.
We intend to let the process work as designed, and we refuse to feed into the frenzy that has been initiated by the misleading reporting being done. We would ask that you reserve judgment and request that the you respect our family and our family’s privacy.
Representative Doug McLeod:
I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the friends, family and neighbors who have reached out in support and have offered their thoughts and prayers in this matter. While I would like to respond to some of the many fabrications and misrepresentations being reported and published by select media outlets and on social media, I will reserve addressing these until after the process is complete. Our family appreciates your continued thoughts and prayers and ask that our privacy be respected until such time as the facts are known.
The Biloxi Sun-Herald reported last week:
State Rep. Douglas McLeod was arrested after he allegedly punched his wife when she failed to get undressed quickly enough when he wanted to have sex, according to an investigative report filed with the George County Sheriff’s Department.
The 58-year-old Republican lawmaker was intoxicated and holding a glass of alcohol in his hand when deputies responded to the McLeod home shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, the report said. Rest of article

Hmmmmm. Must be election time.
wonder if he whipped her ass for taking so long to make this statement?
This is the weirdest story of the month, or maybe the week. So, who called the cops: the wife or some political rival? Has he exhibited this behavior in the past and this was some cheap attempt to get him once and for all?
What process is working as it was designed? A story was written after a criminal complaint was filed based on statements made by the victim and witness. Someone called the police, and LEO made an arrest based on direct observation. It seems releasing "facts" is contingent upon precious few people.
Both comments made by the McLeods reek, and it's a shame the Representative cannot be bothered to make even a weak attempt at apologizing for the (for once) unwarranted tarnish his actions have given the Legislature.
Somebody needs to start a write in campaign against this guy. Fellow members of our illustrious house will be avoiding him like the plague. Get him out of there, we are already the laughing stock on the USA. We have had enough of this tire salesman in one of our statehouses. She probably supports his reelection simply to get him out of the house for her self protection.
Good deal. She best remember who pays for the lifestyle with which she is accustomed.
Truly an inspiration to other silent victims of domestic violence. Just sweep it all away!
what he did?
Went to church on Sunday?
I believe you are innocent until proven guilty. But if you read between the lines it appears they are saying that the police are lying. How else could it be misunderstood or taken out of context.
Did he punch her or not? The reason is not relevant even if it provides for good media ratings.
If she lies and says he did not punch her then we once again have a politician and supporters who will say or do anything to stay in power. If he did not punch her then how did she get bloodied and why was 911 called.
Forget it, Jake, it's George County....
A nurse called the police for her politician husband being drunkenly abusive.....sheesh. If we had nickels for every time that has actually happened throughout history, and worse......personal lives related to governing used to not cross over.....now the media broadcasts "stories" for ratings. Used to be the police didn't press charges if she didn't want them to....now it justifies their jobs and to further more "funding" for law enforcement. It's a family matter until it's not thanks to idiot media run amok.
"I did not punch my wife" seems conspicuously absent from the statement.
It seems to me the police and the reporters did their jobs, nothing more and nothing less. A violent drunk blaming others for the fallout from his behavior is certainly nothing new, nor is a victimized family member providing cover for him.
Yes, the criminal justice system must presume his innocence unless/until he is proven guilty in a court of law. I'm not the criminal justice system, and I'm not blind.
“So honey, how else are we going to pay for our Orange Beach vacations?”
Why doesn't he just admit that he punched her because of the demon alcohol that possessed him, and then state that he has repented in front of his church congregation and God, the demons have been purged, and therefore all should be forgiven? Sheez. This guy isn't much of a Mississippi politician if he doesn't even know how to do that.
Get this, He is unopposed! Real gems down there.
Hey 3:21. By state law (which is made by the state legislature) an arrest MUST be made if signs of physical abuse are visible. Don’t try and put this on the PoPo..
and to think some on here think there’s no BS from GOP politicians..
Of all the people in George County, How or Why did Law Enforcement go to their house on that particular day? A random welfare check!!!
These statements were written by someone with basic media training but no real skill in such matters. Like another poster said, I'm not on his jury so I have no obligation to presume him innocent: it seems clear that he is a drunken abusive redneck who made it worse by letting an incompetent flack write a statement clearly not his own. He might get re-elected but he will likely remain a pariah in Jackson.
Typical reactions from the household of an abusive man!! I know because that was my father and then I married that same kind of man....and the cycle goes on and on. It wasn't enough that he punched her; he then threatened to kill her dog. What a freaking coward piece of shit! But now let's sweep everything under the rug and pretend that he is the perfect person for "leadership, integrity and vision for the next generation" with values and principles of a God fearing man. She wants to believe him because that's the life that she has lived so she does.
Rep. McLeod should resign. https://t.co/4A9QcmbD3T
Unfuckingbelievable...only in Mississippi.
The statewide Republican Party needs to get his ass out of there in a hurry before this becomes even more embarrassing
En vino Veritas. A mean drunk is a mean person. Git 'em outta there.
tammy wynette and hillary said it best........stand by your man
I can't even imagine what this Thug POS has put his wife and family through over the years. He can't even muster up the decency to provide a simple apology to his wife in his statement, no matter how insincere it would have been. Hopefully when this is settled, he will be left penniless in a jail cell and his former family will never have to see his sorry ass again.
This guy will strike again.
7:16 Unfortunately this type of behavior is not "only in Mississippi", rather, it is everywhere. This abusive POS has power over his emotionally unwell wife and she has been intimidated and programmed to make excuses. His arrogance in not even apologizing to his wife and to the people that he represents, not to mention LE is SOP for abusers. VOTE HIM OUT Mississippi. This is how you fight back. You deserve better.
Oh, wait! She has devoted her life to the medical profession. So what? That's totally irrelevant and self-serving. And she mentions his running a small business. Again....So what?
Why didn't they just both sign a joint statement, as follows: "We are embarrassed that this whole thing has gone viral and we wish this shit would just go away".
His wife is a Nurse Practitioner folks (masters degree in medicine) with 22 years experience, and apparently her own practice.....so she's not a complete idiot. But she does sound codependent and sick because she doesn't want to give up the lifestyle she accustomed to, nor control of a raging animal. I wouldn't want to go see her as a nurse after this story. She screwed up going to bat for this loser. She could have been a hero, now she's a zero.
@ KF, please post police report. Who called?
@ Mrs Mcleod, you are the only one who could have told the police the reason for the abuse... How has the media twisted anything? Shame on you for exploiting police resources in your time of need and then going back on your word. Tell the TRUTH. Cooperate with law enforcement. THAT is your civic duty.
Your statements do not prove that you are respectable people. Your statements prove that domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of class, color or creed.
@ Mr. McLeod, if you want so much privacy, you should not hold a PUBLIC office. If you want this to go away... you need to go away. Far away.
'Scuse me, but what is this about a 'lifestyle' afforded by being in the Mississippi legislature?
All of you maligning the wife as being accustomed to some lifestyle are, at best, breathtakingly ignorant. And I mean that in the most charitable sense I can muster. Ignorant of how abuse works, what power an abuser has over his or her victim, and how that victim is a victim almost never by choice but because the definition of a victim is one who is preyed upon by another. God bless you all for escaping the knowledge this apparently well educated, accomplished woman has had to learn. I pray she’s able to leave safely and that her abuser truly changes.
