A small child was nearly killed by a pack of dogs in Montgomery County Friday. The Winona Times reported:
A Montgomery County child is in critical condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson after he was attacked by six dogs while riding his bike Friday afternoon on Sawyer Road.
Sheriff Bubba Nix said deputies were on another call when they were dispatched to Sawyer Road to the incident. He said the child, who he only identified as a juvenile, was riding his bike when it is believed that six dogs attacked the child.
He said City of Winona Animal Control Officer Arlin Pearson also responded to the scene to assist in catching the dogs.
He said the child was drug off of the bike by the dogs and into a ditch where he was mauled. Nix said passersby were traveling on Sawyer Road when they saw the child’s bike in the road. He said they saw the dogs coming out the ditch and once they moved away, they saw the child.
Nix said they took hammers and sticks and used them to get the dogs away from the child. He said the child was airlifted to Jackson where he remains in the hospital. He said the dogs were taken to the Winona Veterinarian Hospital where they were euthanized. Article
Two Facebook comments provided additional information:
I visited today and he is wrapped up like a mummy and still in a medically induced coma. (Yesterday)The owner was not arrested since the county has no vicious dog ordinance.
The child is in critical but stable condition. He had 1 surgery yesterday but will need more. He is in a medically induced coma for now. He still needs lots of prayers. (Saturday)

Probably some more of those lovable, family-friendly pit-bulls.
Why didnt the officers immediately shoot the animals after they got them off the child ? Now they are gone. Was there a body cam used ?
I just thought I'd leave this message here for dog lovers because I think many of them don't realize that people like me exist: I hate dogs. I shoot dogs. Lots of dogs. I shoot them out of my deer stands, I've shot them in my yard, I have even shot them on the side of the road (probably illegal of course). If it is a pit bull, I'll shoot it FO SHO NUFF!
The owner will deny he owns any dogs. The owner is a PODS (Piece of Dog S**t).
Them dogs never bothered nobody. They were always sweet around kids. I just don't know what happened.
Many prayers for this poor child's healing.
For you experts, the breed was not specified. A "pack" of any breed can become dangerous.
3:17, I don't believe all your shootin' stories, but you're still a sick one.
Prayers for the child.
Lawyers and courts for the owner(s).
I despise heavy handed government, but there are too many problems because of negligent pet owners. We need some punishment for these dumbasses.
Hey 3:17, I'm pretty sure everyone, dog lovers included, knows that assholes exist.
WLBT says pit bulls and the owner won't face charges due to no dog ordinance in the county. Dogs were put down at least.
4:10, you nailed it !!! A vicious dog and its owner have more rights than those trying to protect themselves from the dogs. You can kill a man, claim castle law and get away with it quicker than you can for shooting a vicious dog.
As for me, I do not and will not tolerate a vicious dog. If one comes at me in the street it will meet the business end of my sidearm. I have the right to protect myself and family. I will deal with the fall out. There will be no second chance for a vicious dog.
All the more reason to kill pit bulls at every opportunity. Shoot them when in the country. Run them over when in the city.
To hell with the 'authorities", this is why buckshot was invented.
I just saw on the news that the owner of the dogs will face no charges since the county has no loose/vicious dog ordinance.
The family should lawyer up and go after the owner, sheriff's dept and Montgomery County BOS.
Six roaming pit bulls to one owner....
Not illegal, but obviously the owner is a sociopath. Chances are that the owner has pups on standby.
Here’s to hoping that the parents get a personal injury attorney. That’ll at least have the owner wishing that he/she were more responsible.
I hope that the child makes a full recovery mentally and physically, however I wouldn’t be surprised if the owner has just created the next Michael Vick.
to 7:23......" get a PI attorney",,,,,,, yes thats a good idea, but you got to understand that there is a 99% chance that the owner of these dogs has no insurance, no money, no land , no assets,,no net worth, no nothing. and you cant get $ out of someone who has nothing. dont fall into the trap that so many others do on this blog who seem to think everyone is filthy rich and fully insured. i do hope that the district attorney of that county can somehow criminally prosecute the the owner of those pit bulls.
What about criminal negligence?
There's a way to charge this individual if the DA wants to but it's Holmes County so, in addition to being politically unpopular, you would never get a conviction.
Does anyone know if these beasts belong to Pitt Bull Mom?
It isn't Holmes county, 12:36. Read the article.
I don't know anything about the Montgomery county DA. This is an election year and if he/she cares about getting re-elected, they would do well to go after the dog owner for something. Just because the county has no loose dog ordinance doesn't mean the owner isn't negligent.
3:17.... I like dogs but I applaud you. My family owns a reasonably sized ranch and all the white red necks let their dogs run wild so we do the same. The dogs are trespassing and with kids or other family pets around, it’s best to just kill roaming dogs like that.
I wonder how many of you dog lovers wouldn’t shoot a feral cat, but they’ll eat a cow or chicken haha
I'll dust a feral cat in heart beat! An aggressive dog too ! Just aske the lady across the street from me.
