Idiot of the Day: Junior Edition

The son of Mississippi Congressman Michael Guest got himself into some trouble.  The Nashville Scoop reported:

20-year-old Michael ‘Patton’ Guest, son of U.S. Congressman Michael Guest, was jailed in Nashville Friday night, accused of assaulting a police officer and underage drinking. Metro Nashville Police Officer Cody Bergquist was standing on Broadway in downtown Nashville when a clear plastic cup fell from the rooftop bar above, striking him in his left foot. Officers reviewed security footage which clearly showed Patton Guest intentionally throwing the glass from the rooftop of Jason Aldean’s Bar. When officers located Guest and confronted him, he had an alcoholic drink in each hand, despite only being 20 years old. Guest initially denied throwing any items from the rooftop, but during the interview, he admitted, unprompted, that he threw the drink from the roof and had been drinking alcohol from the bar. Multiple witnesses identified Guest as the person who threw the glass.

If the assault is the plastic cup that is ridiculous.

This may force Cassidy to cut the head off another statue!

I agree with 11:09 and 11:18. I did stupid stuff at out of town college formals, which I assume this was(it's that time of year). Sure an MIP charge, a night in jail, but assault? Patton likes to party, I did too.

Anonymous said...

so was it a plastic cup or glass?

Anonymous said...

These types of things always make me thankful that there weren't many security cameras and no cell phones (w/ cameras) back in the 80's.

Anonymous said...

It's obviously juvenile and dumb he threw a plastic cup of beer off the roof, but they found the video tape, reviewed it and then found the same guy standing around? That's almost proof that its not "assault" and just littering or whatever. (& underage drinking.)

I'm glad to see no special treatment for a Congressman's son, but this doesn't sound like something that would include "assualt".

The Nashville Scoop just reports Nashville arrests with some slight commentary. That's brilliant in in simplicity! https://www.scoopnashville.com/

Sorry kid, this one's out of your dad's jurisdiction.

Cup or glass? Both are mentioned in the article. I imagine it is a plastic cup, so an assault charge may be over the top.

Anonymous said...

Yeahhhhhh that’s a little extreme. Should be a public intox and underage drinking nothing else. They made it sound like a he punched a cop. Intent to toss a plastic cup and intent to hit a cop with a plastic cup are 2 very different things. A good defense attorney should get it reduced to public intox and MIP

Anonymous said...

He’s a 20 year old kid. Prayers for the Guest family. Tough being a parent today.
Kingfish should pull this down. Poor taste and damages Kingfish’s credibility.

Please keep us posted on whether or not the Distinguished Representative from Mississippi ends up owing his colleague from Tennessee a favor for getting his adult son out of trouble.

Something few of the majority of the “stupid young men” from Mississippi have the privilege of receiving.

If you bothered to read the story it said he assaulted a police officer

Anonymous said...

12:34 I read the article and i interpret what i read was the ASSAULT was the cup hitting the officer's foot

Anonymous said...

Something tells me if this was Bennie Thompson's kid, grandkid, nephew, etc., there would be absolute outrage on this site about lawlessness, disrespect of the police, etc. Instead it's oh well, its generally ok to drop drinks on an on-duty law enforcement officer who's out there to protect the stupid little prick's dumb ass.

Ima turn myself in to Houston PD. Yes, we miscreants of the First Baptist Church choir tour were in a hotel with 15 stories. The pool was along the side of the 10th floor. The larger kids could and did create fantastic cannonballs which could be sent over the side of the building, which overlooked the hotel entrance and sidewalk (they probably didn't consider that in architecture school).

So after we had had a few warmup "showers" on unsuspecting hotel guests, a Houston motorcycle cop pulled up to the hotel, revving his Harley, and parked outside the covered entrance. Just begging for it.

Yes, we did. And he looked up at the row of snotty little FBC delinquents howling in laughter as he got a little shower. Then, we ran. Assault? No. I hereby pardon Guest Jr.

And hope the SOL on these high crimes and misdemeanors has run out in my case.

Since my time as a cop in the Bronx, I have looked up, since they dropped 5 gallon buckets with cement, not plastic cups. Poor thing. Must be in critical incident PTSD counseling since.

12:23, sorry, but this is news. I’m guessing if it were the son of a liberal or the son of someone you don’t know, you would criticize KF for not running it.

And for those challenged by Southern vernacular, a common usage for “glass” is anything you pour a drink into and drink out of, whether it be a silica based non-crystalline solid, or as in this case, a petroleum-based synthetic polymer. Much like the glasses I’m using to read this post have no actual glass in them.

As I’ve told many, we’ve all made mistakes in our lives! Patton is a good kid and I’m not excusing his behavior, just hope that he learns from his mistake! Everyone that is commenting negatively, remember, we’re only one accident or mistake away from our lives or our child’s changing forever. Prayers for Patton and his family!

Any consequences for the bar that serves underage people?

Anonymous said...

Maybe, if it were a flower pot.

Anonymous said...

12:34 PM: We did bother to read the story and the "assault" to the police officer was apparently dropping a cup from a rooftop bar that hit the police officer's foot.

Anonymous said...

12:34 pm If YOU bothered to read the story, he admitted his act to the police officer when confronted. Nowhere is an " assault" described other than that the drop/toss of a cup that landed on the officer.
Nor does the article describe any " injury" though being wet is a given.
Indeed, the young man's aim would have been pretty damn good and well timed for a drunk kid to have been a deliberate hit at all.

"If the assault is the plastic cup that is ridiculous."

Nashville police are renowned for having exquisitely tender tosies......

"If you bothered to read the story it said he assaulted a police officer"

And if you bothered to read the story it said he was up on the second story balcony and the "victim" was on the sidewalk. How long would his arms have to be to "assault" someone one story below him?

Anonymous said...

12:34 if you bothered to read the ENTIRE story it says "accused of assaulting a police officer" and that a clear plastic cup struck the officer in the foot. Immature and stupid, yes, but NOT "assault" in my book.

Anonymous said...

If that's assault, then there should be mass arrests at Swayze Field in Oxford, maybe not this year, but I have seen it. On live national TV as well. So much fan on fan assault going on.

Anonymous said...

Davidson County DA is our own Ole Miss Grad Glen Funk.

Anonymous said...

The assault charge will be dropped in exchange for a guilty plea of underage drinking. The kid (or dad) will pay a fine and do some community service, which is what should happen in any case like this.

And the bar has some explaining to do.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure that cup was tossed at the officer and not accidental. So as with a rock or bottle thats still assault

Anonymous said...

All y’all saying tossing a plastic cup at a LEO is “not” assault just remember the slippery slope in Jackson where the lack of traffic control has lead to the popularity of “street takeovers” and other “harmless” crimes.

Nashville has no tolerance for shenanigans.

Anonymous said...

2:32 doesn't matter how your book readsm it matter what the law in that town considers assault

Anonymous said...

Y'all need to look up the legal definition of (simple) assault. It is an attempt. Battery is a completed act.

Anonymous said...

2:23 assault doesn't have to be the act of striking someone physically spitting at a officer can be considered assault

Anonymous said...

It's a simple assault, not battery. The inebriated youngster may have talked himself into 'cuffs.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, Congressman. Unfortunately, our youth dont seem to develop brains until much older.

I know it's a congressman's son but this is barely newsworthy if it even is.

Anonymous said...

It’s amazing how you people make excuses for certain gents but will throw the book at others. Let’s make sure we keep that same energy when the next “underaged minor” makes a “juvenile mistake.”

Good job for reporting on this.

Or did your damn ego get punked? O my!

I myself have spent the night in jail at 18. My parents both hated alcohol, so trying to hold them accountable for my stupid acts of teen hood would be silly. The reality is that I probably showed out in Jackson earning an arrest, well deserved arrest because I dared not do it around my home town. I’ll assure you that Mr and Ms Guest will lay down the law at home, but keep in mind the young man is in college and cannot be watched over by mom and dad 24-7. He knew better, he also was not attempting to assault the officer, although his actions may fit the law, he is a young teenager who was likely trying to look good for the girls, be big before his buddies and had a little beer buzz going and bam, you’re in jail for the night. Most of the ones on here condemning the world over a teenager dumb mistake have done the same crap, including me. I went on to work my entire adult life in law enforcement, gave me much more respect for the law and I believe made me a better cop, I understood that even though there is law, there is also common sense, which most 18 year old testosterone filled young men lack. I certainly had very little common sense at that age. He will pay a fine, he will do whatever the court orders and prayerfully, he’s learned a harsh life lesson. Embarrassing as it
may be, humility is a great life lesson, humbling if you allow it to be. Patton, let this be a learning experience and also pay attention to how critical saints and sinners can be. Quick to bash but defensive to bashing.

Anonymous said...

How stupid kids are these days, if you can’t realize that your father is a public figure and you need to do everything possible to walk that straight line, no one’s going to help you.

My father was a public figure when I was in high school and college, no one had to tell me “don’t do anything to jeopardize my father’s livelihood”. I knew it.

Post Of The Day Right There...One thing I aint Read is was the Plastic Cup Half Full or Half Empty?

Anonymous said...

You intentionally throw a drink on a cop from a rooftop/balcony, and you go to jail if they can catch you.

As for assaulting a police officer, I'll vote with other commenters that he probably talked himself into that one.

This is curious:

"Multiple witnesses identified Guest as the person who threw the glass."

I suspect he must have been pretty obnoxious to get fingered like that by the crowd.

Anonymous said...

@4:20 Solo cups aren’t Glocks. Even if another “type of person” did this, I’d still call it being 20 and dumb. Even Bennie or Chokwe’s kid. That age kid does stupid stuff.

Anonymous said...

I'm trying to picture just how slew-footed the cop must be in order to have a cup of beer dropped two stories and have it HIT HIS FOOT.

Anonymous said...

How long was he a "guest" in the lockup?

Anonymous said...

If the cup was painted black, it is a dangerous assault weapon. We need common sense cup laws banning these weapons of war.

Citizens United said...

I just hope the family will be able to financially recover from this.

Moral Knott said...

Looks like the law and republicans think its okay to drop a beer off the roof on a cop. Moral relativity anyone?

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a 20-year old did a dumb thing (or two), got caught, admitted it was his fault--so give him a punishment that fits the crime and move along. Unless there is way more to this story--sounds like he did a stupid thing and then did a very smart thing in telling the truth AND it doesn't sound like from the article that he played the Daddy card---so good for him----

Anonymous said...

WEll, it seems to me that O Boy could have hurt the officer if whatever he threw/dropped had hit the officer in the head. To me, LEO are out there trying to keep us safe and deserve the highest degree of respect and admiration. It I were the officer, I'd be extremely "pissed" and would want the kid prosecuted to the maximum extent possible. I don't care if "it was a stupid 20 yr old doing stupid things". The kid needs to learn to do better and through his "learning", maybe other stupid kids will learn not to mess with the LEOs out there on that limb.

Anonymous said...

I cannot believe how many posting are taking up for Rep. Guest’s son. If this young man was a person of color the ugly comments would be too numerous to count. This young man broke the law plain and simple. If other young men go to war at only eighteen just to get a leg up out of poverty and do honorable work, it stands to reason that a person of privilege should follow the law concerning underage drinking. If a person is in public office, their families know they will be scrutinized. It goes with the territory.

Ann said...

Ok no defense of him here. He should know better. His father is a public figure and he was being extremely disrespectful to law enforcement. Nashville is very serious about under age drinking so why would you bring attention to yourself by doing something silly like throwing a drink. He needs to go straight to rehab. Being young and stupid has nothing to do with this.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
