Furling the Flag

Mississippi will be getting a new flag.  Y'all Politics reported:

Following the passage of HCR 79 by the Mississippi House of Representatives on Saturday, the Senate voted the same bill out of that chamber, reaching the two-thirds requirement to do so by a vote of 36 to 14.  The historic resolution allows for the decommissioning of the Mississippi flag which features the Confederate battle emblem and establishes the process by which a new state flag would be chosen.

The House, which authored the initial resolution, voted earlier 85-34, to do the same. Rest of article.
Governor Tate Reeves said he will sign a "flag bill" it if arrives at his desk.

Also list the people who vote for/against in the house.

Very exciting that this may finally be done with. One less embarrassment for all of us as a state. I do wish they would choose a different design, the state seal is just not a good looking flag, but who really cares as long as it’s done.

It won't change the world and it won't solve all Mississippi's problems, not by a long shot. But it damn sure makes us a little better place.

Now we should get a symbol we don't have to fight over.

Hey Gunn how much did you make on this manuver? Just want to know what your price for selling out the citizens was, anybody that watches you in action knows you are nothing but a whore for money. Your 'fine Christian man and leader' persona is the biggest joke in politics. How many conference chairs did you promise? And how many will you pull of those real men who still have balls to do the right thing? Just wait and you will see I am right- ashamed to say this farce of Amanda is my rep

Speaker Gunn has been on record for some time in support of changing the flag. Not sure why the resentment of some as it is simply the right thing to do. Others came around to Gunn’s position and rightly so. We all hate having our hand forced by outsiders and that wouldn’t have been necessary had we done this a long time ago. But regardless this is progress for Mississippi.

Looks like it won't be the Stennis flag, at least not the current version.

Was WAPT correct in its statement that there will be a vote on a new design in November?

I'm really glad that the flag issue is resolved now. This will finally put to rest all the racial problems we have in Mississippi....Rejoice everybody

Next step. Remove all confederate statues.
No sports in Mississippi until this happens.

Tate since Gunn and Delbert have done a couple of end arounds on you making you look foolish and lost- veto this and MAKE them override it- some of the sheep that Gunn forced to vote for it may be having second thoughts- it probably won't change but it would make several folks SWEAT...btw I agree with 7:54 HOW MUCh did you make on this... did you and Bomgar burn one over this?

And just like that. With the drop of a gavel. The nightly slaughter in Jackson ended. The streets of Jackson became safe for everyone. And the JPS graduation rate spiked to 99%

What's next? Take down all civil war statues? Burn down the iron clad ship? Drain the Ross Barnett Reservoir? Change the racist American flag? BTW, I heard black lives matter wants input on the new flag design. McDaniels was right. Good luck with the can of worms you just opened.

Yeah here comes the industry. I look for Amazon to relocate tomorrow to Mississippi. It was always kind of funny to me that we had to take the players at their word that they were not protesting the american Flag when they took a knee but when someone would say the Mississippi flag doesn't mean racism to us, we couldn't do that. We have to trust what is in the heart of football player but Mississippians were lying. Speaking of Protesting The American Flag now that the US Has basically rolled over to every demand of BLM and neutered the police is there really any reason for the players to take a knee. Should be more like a victory lap at this point

Next?

Remove all statues. Bail reform. Hire all felons. More affirmative action. Renaming of cities and streets. Reparations. Land.

Think I’m kidding? Just wait.

A few thoughts: Now that this distraction from the "REAL ISSUES" is over whats next? Arguing over what the new flag will be? For the sports nuts: What will the NCAA, SEC & C-USA blackmail us over next time? MS not supporting illegals the right to vote? not approving mail in voting? Will there every be any issue that they cram down your throat that is more important than hosting a regional? Or make you say "go to hell - I'm not supporting or watching you anymore"? I doubt it.

The ‘Christian Confederate Heritage’ that is worn like a badge of honor is draped in the blood of others. In order to feel superior human beings were stolen from their native lands, beaten, raped (men, women and children) and murdered. The confederacy fought and lost to continue to be lazy and have slaves and sharecroppers work the land. Don’t worry people still know how proud you are to be from thieves, rapist and murderous anti-government ‘christian’ people.

If you are in any way, shape of form associated with a business...changing this flag makes sense. If you are familiar with Matt. 5:21-26, changing the flag is well-overdue. This "historical value" malarky is old, tired and near comical in value. Mississippi should be jumping at high speed to demonstrate understanding and love for all because we're nearly half-and-half now in racial content. This is an opportunity to lead in love...not necessarily from government, but from the goodwill of our people.

Those who prosper learn to direct the change. Those who only know how to resist change will be washed away. This is a positive change for Mississippi. Why fear the future?

That is something to ponder, isn't it?

In fact, McDaniel brought up that idea a couple of days ago on Facebook. Will they try to place the current flag on the ballot? If they succeed in doing so, we haven't seen anything yet.

McDaniel might try to use this as his comeback.

From where I stand said...

I love to be talked down to and told how I'm this that or the other, by people that don't know me, for that matter haven't even met me. It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling that their tolerance will make a way for a conciliatory gesture to find common ground for agreement. That the liberal position is far superior to any other uneducated uncouth position and that their tolerant left position will allow opposing views to be expressed with patience. All the while converting the ignorant and unlearned to their point of view through well-reasoned arguments and sound logic. At least that would be the case if they had confidence in their position, but they don't. So you have the tolerant left name-calling, slandering, demeaning, doing all within their means to silence their opposition. That's real tolerance.

Anonymous said...

Please not “In God We Trust”. That just spells disaster in a society where less and less people believe in god. Also aesthetically a bad choice. Flags should be easily be identifiable from far away. Think Texas flag. That flag is so good, it’s advertisement for Texas! The Stennis flag would fit the bill. If you don’t like the Stennis flag, good, design another one. But please no text or seals for which you need glasses!

Anonymous said...

I don’t think the current flag would qualify under HCR 479 since it doesn’t have IGWT on it and has the confederate battle flag. Moreover, I don’t think the populace is allowed to vote on which flags will he put up to a vote: the resolution states a commission will make that decision.

Am I missing something?

DA Scot Colom is leading efforts to remove the Confederate statue away from the Lowndes county courthouse and to force the removal of the Board of Supervisors president, Harry Sanders. If Sanders refuses, Colom has threatened to bring in outside protestors. Friendship Cemetery is listed on the National Historic Register and there has never been a threat of vandalizing from the local populace. But if Colom brings in outside groups, Friendship Cemetery is in for a sacking. The cemetery is located in area that would be easy pickings for vandals

IMO Colom is intent on radicalizing groups through his ISSUES "front" that is telecast on sunday nights via WCBI TV. Colom denies of even knowing who George Soros is, but the front that Soros funds donated monies to his(Colom) election that unseated Forrest Allgood...a very unpopular District Attorney of the 16th Judicial District.

It is absolutely embarrassing that I share a state with anyone willing to defend the former Mississippi state flag containing the confederate battle flag. How can anyone in his or her right mind argue that that flag is not demeaning to a large percentage of our population? And how can anyone — especially my fellow conservatives and/or Christians — be OK with that? The truth is that anyone who is upset that the flag is changing is racist, plain and simple. The argument that it's about history and/or heritage falls flat too. You think that argument shields you from the truth of your racist views, but it certainly does not. Germany has a history and heritage that include the Nazi flag. Does that mean it should be used to represent Germany now? By the way, if you answer "yes," you show your true colors just as you do by defending the rag we deservedly are shelving in Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

7:37 – No more so than it being our national motto or being printed on our currency. While I personally believe that we should not have "In God We Trust" on a flag meant to represent all Mississippians, this is a settled matter of law.

I love how the brainiacs in our legislature decided to force the change of a flag issue, while ignoring the one decent designed flag that people actually would have supported, all to hide behind God, hoping slapping that motto on the flag will give them cover with the Baptists.

Yes, it is past the time for a flag change, and our current banner should be in museums; however, caving to pressure is a mistake. Should have changed our MS flag a year or two ago, but now is opening the door to a never ending assault on history, and one wonders if our current flag will be "allowed" in a museum.
Food for thought: will MLK and the entire Jim Crow 100yrs of progress be removed from museums and history also? After all, without the oppressive side, the other would not exist. History is history. We have come a ways with a long way go. May we all get there in peace and together, united.

How about we just go ahead and adopt a nice simple flag... one with a single solid field of pure white.
This easily recognizable banner would show to all our willingness to surrender to outside threats, yet leave a virtual blank slate on which any slogan or symbol could be added as the current situation might warrant.
For instance, the "State Leaders" might at a time like this chose to add "FOR SALE" in simple block letters, showing clearly our willingness to sell out under threat of withholding outside funds, or be bought by anyone promising some good ol' cash.

Anonymous said...

You all are in fine form on this one... LOL

Why do so many feel so threatened by the change of the flag? Your Repbulican good ol' boys will protect you from things that are really going to affect you, unless you are the destitute or working poor of this state.

No one is taking away your right to sing Dixie. No one is taking away your right to fly whatever flag you want on your private property. As a matter of fact, I think you should request a new license plate with the 1894 flag, so that you keep it as a reminder of your history.

In the end, it's all going to be ok.

What I don't agree with is the vitriol I see on here for those who believe differently from you. I also don't agree that the state flag should mention God. Why? What's the point of that? Why not reach a compromise. Magnolia? State Seal? Why God? You can fly a flag with the confederate battle flag emblem at your house. You can fly a flag that says I love Jesus. Why does it have to be part of the flag for a governmental entity? And don't respond "because it's on our money". That's not the issue for Mississippi. We don't print money.

I wonder how many of the "non-Racists" trashing the flag and posting here have a relative that died at the hands of the Union army and where he is buried.
My great-great grandfather died of typhoid fever during Sherman's siege and is buried at Soldiers Field in Atlanta. My mother Avarilla is named for the daughter he never saw.
So, I can see how those who have no blood or soil involved feel the way they do.
I have hired a seamstress to construct a "Raphael Semmes" flag with the original dimensions of that which flew from the mast of the CSS Alabama. Wool bunting materials were salvaged from a giant French Tri-Color bought at the Memphis Army Depot which shut down in the 1990s. Coincidentally, before the sounds of Dixie, the early Southern militias marched and drilled to the sounds of the French Marseilles.

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
