C19 Update: Hospitalizations Surge

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 680 new cases of the Wuhan virus yesterday as well as 14 new deaths.   The total number of cases is 27,247. The virus has caused 1,073 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 50% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 17,242 recoveries.  More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.  Unfortunately, the Rt factor remained at 1.18.

Hospitalizations surged to 560 patients while ICUs crept back up to their second highest level in the last month.  Vents remained the same.

The death rate also looks like it is starting to climb again, but that's not surprising as deaths will lag hospitalizations by at least a week or two. What we are seeing is a lower percentage of nursing home residents dying. It may be 50% overall, but for the month of June it is close to 40%.

Anyone still in denial we are seeing a surge after people simply returned to their regular behavior around Memorial Day? Mississippi is almost dead last in mask usage. Simple things like that could help get the epidemic under control.

Keep this up and there will be no choice but to implement mandatory restrictions on certain businesses and activities. We won't shut everything back down, but anything with large gatherings and no way to control social distancing will be gone.

Hope nobody needs to go to New York. We were just added to the list of states where people have to quarantine for 14 days if they enter New York.

Unfortunately, these stats aren't truthful and accurate, because too many (more than 1 is too many) hospital deaths are moved into the Covid-19 column because of the huge monetary incentive (reimbursement schedule).

It's beginning to look like we can kiss the football season goodbye. Maybe the players will take out their frustrations on you morons who refuse to wear masks by making you their tackling dummies in open public!

@4:19 You should take a look in the mirror and question why that’s the thought you’re having as this state is utterly failing in its fight with corona. The only evidence that conspiracy theory has unearthed, to my knowledge, is that there is in fact extra money that goes to hospitals with corona patients. Then the reasoning jumps to “well where there’s a monetary incentive, people must be cooking the books.” I think your group is projecting your own cynical opportunism onto others.

@3:56 I don't know what part of Mississippi you're in but from what I can see people ARE social distancing and most people ARE wearing a mask, and some people are so afraid they are out fishing by their self while wearing a mask and driving with their mask on in a car all by their self.

Don't make it sound like nobody is doing what you want them to do.

If you subtract the nursing home deaths we are not doing to bad.
Nursing home people do not get out that much. No large gangs of them running un and down the street. They should be less likely to catch the virus.
Looks like the people working there should have done what the above person is demanding everyone should do.

KF, is data available to show how many of today's reported cases represent positive antibody tests versus new, current infections? I believe Dobbs acknowledged to the Sun Herald recently that current infections and positive antibody tests (prior infections) are being reported together as one combined daily figure. Also, the MDHS site reports nearly 12,000 antibody tests have been given to date. Is data available to show how many or what percentage of those came back positive?

Wait! This was supposed to magically disappear in warm weather.

Does Mississippi count 'probable' cases or are all numbers positive cases confirmed by testing? Some states are counting 'probable' without testing and the same on the death certificates. The numbers have been skewed from the beginning.

4:19 PM There is not a shred of truth to your statement

Jensen said, "Hospital administrators might well want to see COVID-19 attached to a discharge summary or a death certificate. Why? Because if it's a straightforward, garden-variety pneumonia that a person is admitted to the hospital for – if they're Medicare – typically, the diagnosis-related group lump sum payment would be $5,000. But if it's COVID-19 pneumonia, then it's $13,000, and if that COVID-19 pneumonia patient ends up on a ventilator, it goes up to $39,000."

You left out facts, 4:19/6:00:

"While it seems plausible that Medicare disbursements to hospitals treating COVID-19 patients could be in the range given by Jensen in the Fox News interview (if those patients are covered by Medicare), we found no evidence to support Jensen’s assertion that “Medicare has determined” that hospitals will be paid $13,000 for patients with COVID-19 diagnoses or $39,000 for COVID-19 patients placed on ventilators." SNOPES

“There’s an implication here that hospitals are over-reporting their COVID patients because they have an economic advantage of doing so, [which] is really an outrageous claim,” Gerald Kominski, senior fellow at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, told us. And, he said, any suggestion that patients may be put on ventilators out of financial gain, not medical need, “is basically saying physicians are violating their Hippocratic Oath … it would be like providing heart surgery on someone who doesn’t need it.”

"Robert Berenson, an institute fellow at the Urban Institute, said the notion that hospitals are profiting off the pandemic — as some of the social media posts may imply — isn’t borne out by facts, either."

FACTCHECK.ORG

So, a fact free conspiracy theory out on the Internet since April, and here you are re-distributing misinformation near July.

But, since "the GubMint is a reimbursing folks"..... it has to be corruption.

And I bet you collect Social Security and Medicare, too.

I was in Lincoln County today, at most 30% of the folks had on mask. And 50% of them didn't have it on properly. Social distancing didn't exist.

In regards to the Fauci link, if that little bastard was without arthritis, younger and fast he'd make a good wide receiver with all his zig zag moves. Reminds me of a woman I knew awhile back, just couldn't make her mind up.

@6:00

Ask FactCheck reporter Angelo Fichera, who interviewed Jensen, noted, "Jensen said he did not think that hospitals were intentionally misclassifying cases for financial reasons. But that’s how his comments have been widely interpreted and paraded on social media."

Ask FactCheck's conclusion: "Recent legislation pays hospitals higher Medicare rates for COVID-19 patients and treatment, but there is no evidence of fraudulent reporting."

Julie Aultman, a member of the editorial board of the American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics, told PolitiFact it is “very unlikely that physicians or hospitals will falsify data or be motivated by money to do so.”

Anonymous said...

@6:00 is correct....follow the money! Also, pay attention to the CDC numbers. Daily updates of totals (Provisional death counts)by week and state. The numbers are going DOWN.

Anonymous said...

Only people that are safe from Covid-19are protesters. They can’t catch it or pass it to others.

Anonymous said...

@6:00 are you intentionally trying to mislead everyone?

From a USAToday article:

“ Jensen said he thinks the overall number of COVID-19 cases have been undercounted based on limitations in the number of tests available.
...
There have been no public reports that hospitals are exaggerating COVID-19 numbers to receive higher Medicare payments.

Jensen didn't explicitly make that claim. He simply suggested there is an "avenue" to do so now that "plausible" COVID-19, not just laboratory-confirmed, cases can be greenlighted for Medicare payment and eligible for the 20% add-on allowed under the relief act.”

The virus is going to kill one in a thousand Mississippians. You can slow it down (by social distancing; closing bars; getting idiots not to sing in church; closing salons) but you can't stop it. It is going to kill one per thousand Mississippians. Already has in Lauderdale County. So if you slow it the hospitals will be available for your broken leg or hip. If you don't, your care will be shit for a while. Simple choices.

9:59 I take it you don’t think treatments will improve over time or a vaccine won’t even be 10% effective. Otherwise pushing the illness farther out will result in more lives saved and we may be able to bring the mortality rate close to zero.

If the temptation is there, the majority who will do anything for a buck will game the system.

For those reading that do understand medicine or have a science background know and understand that we are nearing herd immunity. Look at NYC... they have achieved herd immunity status and that is why the virus is not spreading in those places anymore. Young people and healthy populations contracting this is the only way to rid of it. The national death rate is plummeting as are hospitalizations per case. Most national medical associations are demanding children return to school in August as they are near 0 risk and it will achieve herd immunity. This is nature and nothing left or right politician can prevent. Nature has been winning for a long long time.

Anonymous said...

Herd immunity is not near to being achieved. Ask the folks in LA. In NY where they have leadership people are are wearing mask and social distancing. If they drop their guard like we have, they will be in the same boat.

Anonymous said...

The people who say the government cannot force them to wear a mask are the same people who wanted to keep the Confederate battle emblem on the state flag. Morons.

Anonymous said...

@4:14, we're nowhere close to herd immunity. Less than 1% of America's population has or had the virus. Roughly 328 million people in the US and 2.5 million cases per the CDC. People advocating for spreading the virus to achieve herd immunity at this point are wrong and are spreading misinformation.

Anonymous said...

New York City has been hardest hit and they still are nowhere near herd immunity. The latest estimate based on antibody testing is the city has about 25% exposure rate. They would need to triple that to get to herd immunity. The rest of the country is somewhere between 5% and 15% exposure.

Deliberate infection of the entire population as some are suggesting is absolutely crazy. You would need to increase deaths by at least 10 times before it could be achieved.

How about we do what we can to mitigate the spread and see if one of the 140 vaccine candidates or thousands of treatments being developed is effective before sentencing a million Americans to death just so you can go to your bars and football games.

Andrew Cuomo is serious about his immigration. He's thinking of building a wall to keep people out. Don't you dare enter New York State illegally!

Hey, why is it that most of the people on TV demanding that we all wear masks are not even wearing them when they are telling us how bad we are for not wearing masks?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
