Canton Sandblasts Sandridge for Stiffing City

The city of Canton sued Todd Sandridge and his company, Big South Events, for allegedly stiffing the city on a contract to manage the Canton Multipurpose and Equine Center in Madison County Circuit Court on November 7.  Canton also claimed Sandridge allowed the building to be damaged and burglarized.

Credit: Mississippi Film Office

Big South agreed to rent and manage the center for $120,000 per year.*  However, Canton waived the first eight payments ($80,000) so Sandridge could make needed improvements or renovations to the center as needed.  His first payment was supposed to begin on July 1, 2018.    Big South also agreed to spend at least $100,000 on improvements to the facility (Listed in #16 in complaint) and cover utilities.    The contract gave the company the right to manage the adjacent RV park in exchange for a $3,700 monthly fee.

However, Big South apparently did not pay a dime to the city of Canton.  The complaint alleges "The Defendant has refused, without justification, to remit any payment under the commercial lease agreement and management agreement.."

Canton also claimed the building was "burglarized and damaged on or about September 28, 2018."  Sandridge is accused of leaving the facility unusable.  Several bills such as a bills such Entergy went unpaid as well.

The defendant's alleged deadbeat ways continued until the city finally issued a demand to return all keys.  He never did so and Canton had to hire a locksmith to enter its own building.  Canton said it paid $6,055 to restore the condition of the complex "due to damage" caused by Big South.

Canton charged Sandridge and Big South with breach of contract and asked for damages of $45,000 (lease payments and 5% interest) and payment of all bills incurred.

Mississippi Secretary of State records state that Sandridge formed the company on December 1, 2016.  The Secretary of State dissolved the company on December 1, 2018 after it failed to file its required annual report.

* The fee was paid in monthly installments of $10,000.

Knowing this would be the outcome, the equine community tried its best to encourage Canton to keep the facility and offered many suggestions to better manage and grow support of the facility. Perhaps they could at this time reconsider.

I hope you're right, Patricia. It's a great facility that goes woefully unused. I hope Canton leadership can understand that having someone using it, even at a cheaper price, is better than it sitting empty.

Todd Sandridge. Not surprising at all.

Then the citizens of Canton should sue the City of Canton for allowing their homes and business's to be burglarized.

Anonymous said...

Is this the same guy that also builds houses?

I'm no legal eagle, but it seems to me it would have been prudent for the city to have required a surety bond from Sandridge. But, we're talking Canton here. And I know for a fact that there is no one associated with the city that has the knowledge and experience to operate the facility. The last person in charge of it was convicted of voter fraud and sentenced. Canton. It is what it is and always will be.

The City needs to sell it and the associated trailer park in the rear. Originally the trailer park was a transient trailer park but has become a permanent residence for the current users. The Center up front is still let out to friends and relatives at a low to no price range with the city providing security. This facility was once under Judge Rainey's control. There have been no equine shows or such for some time now. The cattle guys will drop off and pickup cattle but doesn't appear regulated or controlled. Stables are in shambles. A friend up there told me this.

Todd Sandridge Is also in the construction business. if you think he stiffed Canton, try letting him build something for you.

11:55 - take your statement up with Blackmon and Blackmon aka: Ready Eddie and Babbs. They are the attorneys of record for the city of Canton.

The Mississippi Hunter Jumper Association now holds their shows at the Rankin County Multpurpose Center. While it needs an additional ring or two, it's a really nice facility. They might come back to Canton but only because the extra rings allow the show to move along faster. The indoor ring can't hold a candle to the Rankin ring.

Sandridge is a home builder. How/why did he land this gig?

Anonymous said...

I don't know the history of this facility, but I wouldn't be surprised that certain officials in Canton were able to profit from its construction. The few people I know who have used it or tried to use it have reported a distinct racist vibe coming from behind the scenes, which shouldn't surprise anyone. It's sad. It's a decent facility that could do some good in the community, but it will probably rot away to nothing as long as it's controlled by the race mongers in Canton.

Anonymous said...

2:15 - you sound like a race monger yourself. Full of innuendo and second hand information spouted out to reaffirm your bigotry. I've been there plenty of times for horse shows and have never experienced, nor have the people organizing the event, ONE SINGLE INSTANCE of racism. It's almost 2020, go back under your 1970 era rock.

" take your statement up with Blackmon and Blackmon aka: Ready Eddie and Babbs. They are the attorneys of record for the city of Canton."

That was my very first thought when I saw this.

No way Todd stiffed the city. There’s more to the story than what is posted here. 100% guaranteed. I can’t wait for you to eat horse, I mean crow.

Thought Kimberly Banks was Canton's city atty?

Kingfish said...

Eat crow? How? All I did was post a lawsuit. His defenses will be posted as well.

@1:43 Sandridge isn't in the homebuilding business. He is in the money-making business. So think about that before you let him build you a home.

I hear his commercials on Supertalk FM 97.3, with J.T., so that assures me he is an honest, upstanding guy. They don't put up with no foolishness on that station.

"They'll come to you...Thaz rite"... (got ole Dave's voice cut).

Anonymous said...

I haven't been there since he took over. Anybody know if he ever paved the indoor horse ring? When the horse people left, they were told that Canton had leased the property to some guy who was going to pave the ring so he could have indoor concerts. I speculate he never did but can anyone confirm?

Anonymous said...

He did nothing.. city of canton has it all back now

Hate to see this. Todd built my house and I didn’t have any problems throughout the process. (It’s been 4 years, so y’all can keep any “Just wait” comments.) I’m sure his Answer will be enlightening. At least, I hope so.

Separate but related, why would anyone choose to do business with Canton? Just stay out of there.

5:05 made a very clear statement. A person who is in a business just to make money and has no desire or love of the work he or she does is not someone to be trusted. I have seen it many times. From residential to commercial construction you see a lot of it. The ones who are in it for just the money are the ones who give you shoddy work and never understood true construction methods. Like the old used car dealers used to be. Just shine up a car put some additives in the fluids and sell it. More or less like so called “house flippers”. I’ve known several who had absolutely no experience at all in construction yet they somehow manage to put lipstick on a pig to sell it...the pig being the house. And the next buyer getting a house of cards per day. So, to get back to your topic here, if he is a home builder why would he stick his neck out on something like this kind of venture? Old saying is, “stay away from a jack of all trades, and stay with the master of one” just always remember, if you have a problem with a contractor that is licensed you can report them to the State Board of Contractors. But just because he has a license doesn’t mean he is qualified to build. Sort of like a person getting their driving license and throwing the book out the window....wait....I JUST described 80% of the drivers in JACKSON!!! Roger....Wilco....over and out!

The post on December 6th, 3:34 PM. You have got to be one of the gullible people Todd has built for.

Had the "fortune" of dealing with Sandridge in the past. Nothing in the complaint surprises me.

Todd Sandridge’s brother is a deputy with Madison and spends most of his time at Canton Academy, patrolling it. All the real Canton money goes to Canton Academy. The deputy rubs the backs of all the Canton big wigs. He’s made good connections being the liaison officer there. When Todd heard of word of the complex deal, the Canton folks thought the best of Todd since they know his brother. Also, Todd sings in the Broadmoor Baptist choir. He is very active in the church, which everyone knows is the church that runs the city and county of Madison and it’s politics. So with all of his connections, the complex was his! Which he ran into the ground. Too busy dating all the single moms! Which he later married one!

Anonymous said...

@ 9:46: you’re right about the one church that plays politics. That one is not in the form of truly saving people. For that you have to go to a church that has people who are not intent on being showy. And yes, there are more than enough run around people that go to church these days and put pineapples on their doors. So sad. With all that being said, I’ve never ever trusted a house builder.

Bill: You need to stick to the threads where you can defend Gabbord Jibberish and stay from these that involve money.

@8:59 - You and several others have posted what amounts to a supreme waste of your time (and mine for reading it). I don't know this man from Adam but it's impossible for any of us to know what's in a man's heart or 'why' he is in business or what % of his drive is based on money. How damned ridiculous.

If a guy has not spent time in the building trades as something other than a builder, they absolutely should not be building anyones houses. If you think knowing how to get subs to come to do the work is home building 101 then you will get the product you ask for. If a guy has expensive habits and hobbies and something seems off about his genuine intentions then it probably is. Couple of ex wives or some other shaky sign, a little habit or to much time spent on vacation, aka Colorado or New Orleans, you have a flim flam artist on your hands. Want to learn to pay more than you ever thought for a job, you will get your wish. The guys who finish your house will cover up the flim flam mans stupidity but the money is never enough. They will beat you with extra's and change orders and you will pay. If you know of any old habits of partying, drug use or gambling, do not hire those people. They are predators who will tell you what you need to hear so they can skin you. There are people out here who do not do that but they are not the masters of self promotion like the flim flam men.

While I realize many people use a site like this to anonymously poke people, there are a couple of things that I can shed light on.
The first is this is a dispute over a lease purchase agreement between a group investors and the city of Canton.
The second thing to be noted is the City of Canton was in violation of the agreement from day one. There are several things that were to be both provided and promised that never came to fruition. Many of which were negotiated with alderman whom are no longer with the City because of violations made through voting fraud. I don’t understand how a lease dispute can be titled in such a way that I or my partners “stiffed” anyone without understanding what transpired or how family comes into play.
The issues we have with the lease have been stated and the city has been aware from day one. All of this is unfortunate because the City needs to work with someone to get things in order for the benefit of the citizens, which was the intention of our presence in the first place.

Although I have "no dog in this fight", I do know it was a very nice facility ten years ago.

But Canton is Canton.

So I'm not surprised about anything in that town.

Family connections mean a lot in a small community. They open the doors to many opportunities. Just ask Hunter Biden.

Mr. Sandridge brings up some valid points in his comments. Without reviewing the lease contract cited in the lawsuit, it is hard to make a determination. I do wonder why Mr. Sandridge would fail to file an annual report on his company. That is pretty blatant. According to Kingfish it was dissolved by the SOS. Mr. Sandridge talks about negotiations with previous Aldermen. Those are binding, and I assume Mr. Sandridge would have all of that in writing. If so, then why would Canton not consider that before suing? Mr. Sandridge stated that Canton didn't do what they were supposed to do. I assume Canton's responsibilities are clearly stated in the lease agreement, so that will be extremely simple for Mr. Sandridge to prove. Based upon the complaint, I am betting that Canton has a pretty good argument. Canton appears to be throwing out facts by citing things in the lease agreement. Mr. Sandridge (to this point) is throwing out "but, but, but, but I didn't do anything wrong." Of course maybe neither side held up their end of the deal.

Sandridge normally has Trey Pace (tax collector Kay Pace's son) as a business partner. Is Trey involved in this? He is not listed, but maybe he will be a John Doe. Trey seems like a good guy with a decent reputation. Not sure why he is mixed up with Todd.

Sandridge says:
I don’t understand how a lease dispute can be titled in such a way that I or my partners “stiffed” anyone without understanding what transpired or how family comes into play.

My response to that is that family doesn't come into play. There is a lease agreement, and the 2 parties either followed it or they didn't.

Sandridge says:
The issues we have with the lease have been stated and the city has been aware from day one.

My response to that is that once again, the lease agreement is apparently a signed contract. So if you have issues with the lease on day one, why did you ever sign it? Neither side should ever sign a lease until they are comfortable with the contents. Then both sides have to abide by it. So Sandridge signed a lease, then on day one said "I have issues with it?" That makes no sense.

Anonymous said...

@10:48 I believe that is the point Mr. Sandridge was trying to make, probably referencing the commenter who went on and on about his brother being a deputy, his involvement in his church and his dating and marital status. All of which seem to have no bearing on a lease dispute. Sounds like that might be one of the single moms it didn’t work out with. As someone already mentioned, I also don’t know the guy from Adam but wasted an awful lot of my time on some of your comments. To echo above .. “How damned ridiculous”

Todd and Trey own Crosstown Builders. Todd is an opportunist , which there is nothing wrong with that! He saw an opportunity to make money and that does not make him evil. His dad handles events and promotions in Tennessee so i am sure that is where he got the idea. A few years ago they tried to offer ice skating during the holidays at Trustmark Park in Pearl and it failed, miserably. What is wrong is that he signed a contract and did not live up to his obligations. Dissolving the company and not filing with SOS speaks volumes. He needs to pay for damages and whatever else he owes and move on. His brother has nothing to do with this. If he is guilty- he needs to pay. Move on. Not a great builder, anyway.

Anonymous said...

Trey Pace and Todd are partners in Crosstown Builders. They are also partners in Superior Foundation. They are one of the builders in the builders guild at this new Village at Madison that was recently announced. Those developers will be sick of hearing complaints on Todd before it is all over. Trey would be wise to go his own way and do his own thing. His reputation seems to be pretty good. Todd is known for being absent, unresponsive, unavailable, unreliable, etc. when he builds you a house. Todd and David Landrum tried to do some stuff together at the Town of Livingston. That fell through before they even broke ground.

Todd and Trey built my house Years ago and did a phenomenal job, both with myself and my husband and in their work. I have referred them more times than I can count and will continue to do so.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
