"The violence we experienced these last few weeks is unacceptable," said U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst at a press conference Monday. He pulled no punches as he held politicians and judges responsible for a catch and release criminal justice system that causes Jackson to live in fear.
* Mr. Hurst thanked the various law enforcement agencies involved in last week's operation. He gave special recognition to JPD as well as Commander Banks (Hope that doesn't hurt her career.).
* The operation took place last week from Tuesday through Saturday.
* 25 suspects were arrested, including 4 murder suspects. The task force also recovered stolen firearms and property as well as seized illegal drugs.
* Mr. Hurst said Project Eject arrested 120 suspects and seized 100 guns in its first year. His office obtained indictments for 88 suspects for committing violent crimes in Jackson in 2019.
* "To the politicians: Quit denying there is a gun problem in Jackson, quit denying there is a crime problem, a drug problem, a gang problem in our capitol city" said Mr. Hurst.
* The U.S. Attorney disputed that "open-carry laws" are the cause of the crime problem in Jackson (6:50). He said politicians should stop talking down to and "demeaning families who want to protect themselves."
* Local judges didn't escape Mr. Hurst's notice either: "Quit releasing, re-releasing, and re-releasing violent criminals when there is evidence and facts to show they are a danger to our community." He said catch and release encouraged criminals to feel that "there are no consequences" and demoralized law enforcement. Some suspects arrested during the operation "were put back on the street before we even finished the paperwork."
Kingfish note: The Mayor was none too pleased with the U.S. Attorney's comments about crime. One suspects he was more mad about being criticized by a white guy than he is about the actual crime problem. Yes, I said it.
Check out this comment by the Mayor in the Clarion-Ledger:
Lumumba, who was out of town on business and said he had not listened to Hurst's press conference, cautioned to avoid addressing crime in the Capital City anecdotally."I would advise anybody that's looking at Jackson to look at all the data. We're not reluctant to say a crime is gang or drug-related, but we don't won't to create a false narrative, either," he said.
Mr. Mayor, I am so glad you brought up the word "data" because your office has done a wonderful job of hiding it from the public. It is well known you micromanage JPD. You had JPD stop using the Comstat system nearly a year ago. Comstat had wonderful features such as telling citizens where crime happened AND, and this is the important part, it gave year-to-date crime statistics that could be compared to the same time period a year earlier. For example, one could review both the August 1 Comstat reports for 2019 and 2018 and compare the YTD crime stats, thus giving one a reasonable idea of how the fight against crime was going as well as seeing the total number of criminal incidents for the year in Jackson.
However, that simply told the people too much about crime in Jackson. The Comstat reports weren't posted for nearly a year on the city website. Remember all the bragging about transparency? Yeah. The Mayor forced out a popular police chief and brought in someone who had no supervisory experience to be chief. First thing the Mayor's boy did was ditch the weekly comstat public meetings. He scheduled them to be held every other week but then consistently cancelled even those. Hiding crime information is a Lumumba tradition as his father immediately removed all crime information from the city website. Mayor Tony Yarber put them back on the website when he assumed the purple.
Mayor Lumumba's war to keep crime information from the public continued. He had JPD toss Comstat and bring in the almost useless Uniform Criminal Reports. Whereas Comstat was a weekly report, UCR is a monthly report. The UCR's were not posted on the website for 9 months until this website raised hell about it, then the missing crime reports were posted within a few hours. The UCR's do not give YTD crime stats. Thus one literally can not determine from the UCR's how many aggravated assaults or burglaries there are in Jackson for 2019. The Mayor has made it impossible to do so and make no mistake, this was his intent. Keep in mind he bragged he was doing a favor for the public.
Simply put, the Mayor has been trying to hide news about crime since he assumed office. Remember, those who are usually claiming they are for the people are usually the ones trying to screw the people.

Merely a perception of crime-
Great over-all assessment and comments, Kingfish. But, I guess when roaches control the kitchen and the homeowner keeps leaving crumbs out for them, they are not affected by the occasional shining light, nor is the homeowner.
JPD leadership is clueless. I live in Jackson and for someone to deny the crime issue simply has there head in the sand.
Remember the Mayor must be a champion of alternative policing methods and curtailing mass incarceration when he meets with his cohorts "out of town" on business. It works so well in those speeches in New York and Detroit but not so well in Jackson where Dodge City law prevails. Jackson needs a crack down but it ain't coming on the municipal side no time soon.
Well at least the old chief who was fired is coming back to town as the sheriff.
I think the bigger issue is related to gun laws recently implemented by the legislatures.
The unintended consequences of Moronic laws are definitely a leading contender for the spikes in gun violence throughout the state.
Until, their families are affected they will not see the folly in the passage of loose restrictions and open carry.
The bigger problem is guns don’t kill people. People kill people using guns.
It’s time out for stupidity. Change the dang gun laws and enforce them.
It’s shameful there are idiots in MS Government.
Chokway is out of town and out of state virtually every weekend attending various progressive/radical gatherings and conventions. Places like Baltimore, Detroit,Chicago and Harlem. He is desperate to become a national figure- like a junior Al Sharpton.
10:37
Specifics/proof?
Also, "legislature(s)"? How many? Which ones(s)?
@10:37. Open carry has basically been legal since the ratification of our current constitution in 1890. There has been some judicial activism that made it a legal gray area, but it has not been explicitly against the law. All the supposed "open carry" law did was get rid of some poor language that jurists used to ban it de facto. But what's curious, is since Open carry and lax gun laws you say is the cause of all of these issues, why hasn't it been an issue in other municipalities surrounding Jackson? Could it be some other variable is at play? For what it's worth, I don't particularly like open carry, and don't practice it myself, but I also don't believe in some bureaucrat telling me how I can or cannot defend myself or my family.
So Baby Chok goes to Chitcago where they have exceeded 500 homicides for 2019. Kennef must hold down the fort while Baby Chok is sipping chardonnay with other radical progressives.
As the year draws to a close, 10:37 squeaks in with a contender for most idiotic post of the year and may well be the winner.
I would like for this idiot to perform some sort of survey and let us know how many people who killed somebody with a gun in Jackson or anywhere else, in the past four years actually pays any damned attention whatever to open-carry or, for that matter ANY gun law. And while he's at it, also let us know how many of those criminals underwent a background check and purchased a weapon legally. Not a one of them cares or knows a damned thing about gun laws as they were carrying long before it was legal.
Thugs are not going to obey ANY type of gun legislation. Period.
Hinds County elected a new DA with no trial experience. You guys think shit's broken now, just wait and see what the next 2 years brings. I anticipate that the USA's office will have to take over the Hinds County DA's office again, like Lampton did in the 2000's when Faye was DA.
10:37 - Please tell us about these 'unintended consequences' of "gun laws recently implemented by the legislatures". Remember, now, we're talking about crime in Jackson which is the thread you posted on. And let's not have speculation - Post a link to something that will back up your claim of these 'unintended consequences'.
And please don't waste your time or ours claiming criminals didn't carry guns and shoot people in Jackson prior to passage and clarification of open carry. Open Carry, in fact, allowed the rest of us to sort of level the playing field of self protection vs Open Thuggery.
Next....
@11:29
The difference in Jackson and Chicago is this. Jackson is a majority black city and Chicago is around 20% black. The optics look like hurst is being a racist for this speech. I must admit it certainly has a racial superioritytone
If you don’t like what a man is doing at his house, then don’t go over!
If i don’t like what’s going on in certain parts of a city, again, I just don’t go there!
Don’t knock the mayor for what he does in his city. I just avoid Jackson!
Let us just, start concentrating our time and resources on the positive. Help the people that want help!!!
Mike Hurst
Gunslinger
Appointed for a brief time and needing some limelight
Now running for office using your money and people
Yes vote for mikie....he’s running for next
12:18, another difference between Jackson and Chicago is that in 2015 Chicago had a murder rate of about 17.5 per 100,000. This year, Jackson is on pace for about 51.5 per 100,000.
If anyone could get a look at the crime stats in Jackson they could tell us how many people in Jackson has been killed by people who open carry.
Compare that number to the number of people killed by felons who are not supposed to have a gun.
That noise you hear is eyes rolling and mustaches bristling. This is way out of the comfort zone of the Progressive Bold New City. Here's the real truth....nobody in or out of Hinds County really gives a damn about the crime rate.
This little racist blog is pure cringe and this controversy is currently a top discussion among the progressive influencers on reddit. Some have even made reference to flinging complaints with Google over violations of bloggers TOS.
The mayor often says "With poverty, there's crime." Like that's the only way out of poverty, so therefore crime is okay, to his way of thinking.
@ 2:53 you can stomp your feet and scream racist all you want, but that doesn't change the reality that the city of jackson is a shit show, and it's run by grossly incompetent people. It's the peter principle at work, from city hall down to the street department. This pie in the sky progressive bullshit doesn't work in the real world. Maybe in a vacuum, but reality does not exist in a vacuum.
"discussion among the progressive influencers on reddit" - Here's a tip: Your opinions are not bolstered in any way by citing to some dumbass whose only qualification is owning a smartphone.
Thank you U.s. Attorney Hurst for stepping up and yes Jackson-has in the past not reported crime stats to the feds because of losing tax dollars. I personally had someone tell me about being robbed with a gun pulled on her coming out of a dentist office on HWY 18 forcing her into her car and she was lucky to survive. I called the US Marshal Service & the officer verified with FBI it was never reported. I knew this because she (the victim) told me no federal LEO ever contacted her & that is not how Feds operate. Thank you for keeping our streets safe and turning a blind eye doesn’t make it go away!
Hey @2:53
Alphabet, Inc. owns both Google and Blogger. You would know that if you weren't a mush brained Cancel Culture Communist.
There is a crime problem and a gun problem. It's sad when you dismiss church on a Wednesday night and young fool gets in a fight at the dollar general on Raymond Road and shoots off 7 or 8 rounds at the busiest intersection in South Jackson and the bullet ends up in the roof of our Pastor's car. JPD is doing what they can but we have to sweep the streets and root out all of these wannabe gangsters military style. Meanwhile the people who live in Jackson and abide by the law which is 95% are scared to death to leave their homes for fear they will get gunned down in the street like a dog, and we have a mayor who is willing to accept a certain level of murders as long as it doesn't enter into his NE Jackson neighborhood.
Mile Hurst, we love what your doing as LEO but unless you put a special prosecutor and judge in place y’all are just spinning your wheels. The Justice System is so crooked over there, they release these criminals before the ink drys and the administration is so corrupt it’s plain funny. Please follow through and get a handle on this thug infested crap hole.
Thank You, Mike Hurst!
I appreciate your honesty. I know many men and women in law enforcement in the Jackson-Hinds County area who put their lives on the line daily to catch criminals want the local judges to do their job sentencing them instead of releasing them.
If federal laws are broken, I have the greatest confidence in YOU and your office. Wish it were true on the local level.
This little racist blog is pure cringe and this controversy is currently a top discussion among the progressive influencers on reddit. Some have even made reference to flinging complaints with Google over violations of bloggers TOS.
Big talker, post a link otherwise you are FOS.
DA Hurst,
Please stay on top of the illegal immigration problem. I avoid shopping like the plague, but I was forced to do so this last weekend. Northpark and Dogwood were absolutely crawling with criminal illegals, anchor babies in tow.
WJTV and CNN don't make or enforce the laws. They are merely aiding the immigration criminals.
It is amazing reading Othor Cain's FB page, and all the gnashing of teeth over the "racist speech" Mike Hurst made. Some of these AA's are so caught up in racial bullshit, they refuse to acknowledge the very obvious. Black people are killing each other EVERY DAY in particular, and our city in general. I know my ward, 39211, has gone to shit since all this "change" started. Thank you. Diversity is a strength.
Remember Cedric Willis gunned down on Bailey Avenue? JPD arrested suspects but after several months of politicking the suspects were released. JPD will not release any information. More of the same in Jackson and Hinds County judicial system.
What is "racist" about trying to solve crime issues. Even if posters here aren't trying to solve the issue I don't see what makes this blog racist. I assume that all people, black, white or otherwise, would like to live in a safe city.
Cities are not safe for anyone when you have a policy of not working with law enforcement.
So KF- The mere usage of the term "culture" or "cultural" gets your comment cut?
What would it look like if the gangs made sure that all of their members and associates were registered voters and that they all voted in every election. And they voted for whom they were told.
Would that look like Jackson now?

Ya' got dat right. Baby Chock wants to be a "player" on the national stage so bad he can taste it. Say hello to your next Congressman when Bennie decides he has made enough money off the poor folks in the Delta. Baby Chock knows that Congress is where the real money is to be made.
Hurst could have given us specific information instead of the usual rhetoric.
Which judge has let out criminals?
Give us names, times and places, please.
The "life -like GI Joe . . .with a Kung Foo grip" never ceases to amaze me.
He's actually defending these pseudo judges ?
Thank you Mike. Glad I moved out of that hell hole jackson. I defended it for too long... Finally I saw the light
He's talking about Judges Green and Kidd.
8:40 p.m.: 1) Judge Ali Shamsid-deen, 2) any given day that court is in session, 3) Municipal Court of Jackson, Mississippi. You're welcome.
Fitch is history in 4. Hurst is up and running and will be AG in 24.
Citizens that live in areas where crime is rampant, most don’t have a clue. They can’t see the big picture, because they hardly leave their neighborhoods. They are doing real good by their standards!
They know everyone one on the news that is accused of a crime! It’s sad, but true.
But one thing for sure when they cross the Pearl River or go into Madison, the loud music stop, car seats laid back go up and pants too.
“It’s expectations, it’s law, when applied the madness stop!
Mayor, to citizens “ we are viewed as a black eye to Mississippi, police your neighborhoods, spruce up your property, ensure your kids get and education, report crime, get involved, we are proud citizens, let’s get this done! If you want to play the blame game, look in the mirror”.
Folks, I have read all the comments on the cause of all these crimes, and for the most part, you are way off base. Excessive violent crime is not unique to Jackson, therefore, it is really no the mayor's fault. Nor is it a situation of too few LEO; most crime ridden cities have too few to enforce the law. The problem is with the "people". It lies within a culture that is crumbling at its very base. And, I believe most of you know where to point the finger. This same situation is happening in Memphis, Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit. All these cities have one every important thing in common. How to stop it? I don't think you can.
Talking about crime and criminals is not racist. The photos of everyone murdered this year in Jackson would only bolster this fact. Those outraged by the murders are disgusted by the loss of life of all people regardless of personal characteristics. Demand crime statistics. Demand strict punishment of the perpetrators.
I think 9:52 makes some excellent points, but I suggest there is more than one root cause. For one, evidence is overwhelming that illiteracy ("functional" illiteracy, that is, meaning not proficient at reading and writing) is a very strong predictor of crime.

A lot of my friends that now live elsewhere love to say there is no problem in Jackson! And if you ask the current inhabitants of Jackson, they agree there is no problem. And there is your problem!
@ 2:11
Actually fatherless households are the main reason for crime. That's been proven many times. Also on another note no one cares or listens to otha Cain. He couldn't fill a phone booth with his supporters.
Fitch should already have been 'history'. If Hurst had beaten Hood when he ran against him, we might not be having this discussion. Instead, Hood has thankfully left the building and our incoming AG will be occupied with office furniture, drapes, carpet and such, having never performed in a courtroom.
8:17 is probably (and hopefully) correct.
Yes, Jackson has a crime problem and yes, our judicial system is " catching and releasing" violent criminals too often.
But, there is more than a little hypocrisy in the comments being made.
Mississippi has a crime problem and a justice problem. It's not limited to Jackson. I would remind everyone about the white, privileged criminals who have been featured on this very site and who have gotten off too easy for too long.
Comparing Jackson's stats with cities who have far better forensic specialists and forensic equipment is laughable. Nor do we have the same level of professional law enforcement specialists who are well trained to investigate crime.
Indeed, our legislature has failed for decades to make it harder for white collar criminals to succeed. And, in recent decades, our Congress has made it easier for white collar criminals. Both have done so under the guise of de-regulation.
And, at least, our criminals tend to be poorly educated and we don't suffer the " pros" found in big cities.
When it comes to murder, it's most often black on black.
I live in Jackson and don't live in fear because I don't live west of I-55 or in South Jackson. I lived in a big city long enough to know what measures to take to protect myself from far better criminals than we find here. Those measures include not painting a target on my back by being inattentive or by being uninformed about crime.
But, I'm very aware that not everyone is fortunate enough to avoid having to shop or be out late at night. Not everyone has the means I have to secure my home or possessions.
That said, I'm also aware there is a culture of corruption throughout the State and we lead the Nation in white collar crime and political corruption as well.
African Americans are most often victims of crime and sadly, too many whites have tolerated the " good old boy" political system and protected their own criminals. It's way past time to stop blaming and excusing and to start soul searching.
Hurst
Stop using my money to politic.
Do your job and shut up
Hey that comment to Hurst 10:58 is rude & uncalled for! Hurst is doing his job and without Federal LEO help these criminals would still be on the streets!
6:24 a.m. said "@2:11 Actually fatherless households are the main reason for crime. That's been proven many times."
Please provide a citation of some sort to back that up. I don't doubt there is some sort of correlation, but "are the main reason for" is a factual statement of primary causation. If there is credible research to that effect, I'd really like to know.
Thanks,
2:11
9:18; I'm sure you're right, but can you post a link to support your claim that "..we lead the Nation in white collar crime and political corruption as well."
Hurst will be AG in 2024
Perception of crime only
By the way...
While some of you have been smugly patting yourselves on the back for fleeing to Madison, you've missed that you are well on the way to becoming the poorly regulated garbage dump of the South. And, while that will hurt everyone south of you in their efforts to have clean water, try to remember the wind blows your way ( as will the tornado that comes through...maybe you'll find some low level waste blown onto your porch one day).
