Mississippi State's star quarterback will miss the Music City Bowl after a fight with a teammate didn't end too well for the hot shot. 24/7 sports reported:
Mississippi State will make one more and one final quarterback change in 2019, with Tommy Stevens positioned to start in the Music City Bowl against Louisville....
The twist was that shortly before the press conference Shrader and a defensive teammate had been in a confrontation stemming from an in-practice contact drill. Their post-practice altercation escalated before other Bulldogs separated them...
The end result was a swollen eye for the quarterback which initially seemed of moderate concern. There was a short walk-through Saturday practice, with Shrader withheld from participation.
Follow-up examination after swelling subsided revealed some orbital bone damage. While further evaluations continue sources are now confident the bone will heal naturally, without surgical attention and perhaps by the end of January. Rest of article.
The Street Committee says Mr. Stud QB made a remark about chemistry that didn't sit too well with his fellow pugilist.

I'm a state fan/graduate/supporter. This whole thing is overblown. "Star quarterback" is inapt. If he was truly a star quarterback, perhaps it's a story. Shrader wasn't going to provide 5% more than anyone else in that (pretty weak) stable of QBs can deliver.
No, we're never gonna quit
Ain't nothing wrong with it
Just acting like we're animals
No, no matter where we go
'cause everybody knows
We're just a couple of animals
Gay better be glad that State doesn't have a "blind side" protector. He would have "ground and pound" him.
Thug U with another fight. Shocker!
At least his mommy doesn’t have to lay his clothes out for him or shop with him at Belk. I’d bet the balls on my truck, Shrader would gladly play with a f’d up eye socket. Dude can handle his own. He would beat the brains out of KF, if KF wanted to give it a try. Teach him a little something about chemistry.
Children being children. Will they learn anything? Hell no they go to college.
From the outside looking in, it seems a aggravated assault occurred on the MSU campus during a MSU sanctioned event. What would be the consequences for any other student, and will this be reported under the requirements of the Cleary Act?
Agree 12:39- If it was two math majors someone, or both, would be arrested. Since Colleges only care about money and donors nothing will happen to either of the precious little babies.
Overblown! Move on. Ole miss let a kid sleep on a couch. That’s the real story. Actually, no one cares about the sterk villians so nothing to see out of either eye.
@12:39
Can’t be agg assault... no weapon
Agree with the others. It appears to be as clear cut an assault and then a coverup by MSU athletics. Really bad look for the university especially considering the thug should have already been kicked out of school for cheating and the history of such fights at that school. Very embarrassing.
@1:40 PM
No weapon required!
" Under Mississippi law, a person commits an aggravated assault if he:
attempts to cause serious bodily injury to another person
intentionally or recklessly causes serious bodily injury to another while acting with extreme indifference to human life
attempts or causes bodily injury to another person with a deadly weapon or by other means likely to cause death or serious bodily injury, or
causes injury to a child who is in the process of boarding or exiting a school bus if the offender has failed to stop for the bus according to traffic laws.
Aggravated assault is a felony in Mississippi and potential punishments include up to one year in jail or up to sixty years in prison, depending on the victim’s age, victim’s occupation, and the intent of the offender.
(Miss. Code Ann. § 97-3-7.)"
If I'm a head coach or an offensive line coach, my O-line guys better not let anyone touch one of my quarterbacks anywhere. No exceptions, no matter how big of a jackass he is.
And have you ever met quarterbacks? Many deserve to get punched in the face. That's why they need the protection off the field.
Would never condone violence of this nature, nor give an "excuse" for it....
However,
QB Schrader (aloof yankee golden boy Moorehead suckered down to MS) must have said something in a way that disrespected OLB Willie Gay (fierce southerner with serious lack of discipline). Outcome? A mashed in face....Schrader is a hell of an athlete.....but that stupid beard makes him appear like he cares about no one but himself. If it was a decent "hipster" beard, then fine....but it looks like a 1970s porno flashback to a 300 lb woman who should never have done porn. You never saw Burrow sporting anything idiotic like that. Schrader is immature, and thinks it's cute.
@Bubba: subsection i of the aggravated assault statute doesn't require use of an object or weapon.
Bubba:
Agg Assault does not require a weapon. It's called Aggravated Assault: Hands, feet or fist.
Street committee I heard was that Gay made a cheap shot late hit on someone at practice and Schrader called him out on it. From further reading it seems Schrader was a hot head in SC. Either way your senior lead defender and qb don’t need to be throwing punches. Moorehead is a coward and lost what little bit of credibility he has with a lot of MSU fans(including me) by not putting them on the train home. Gay especially. Doesn’t matter what was said, if you punch a teammate hard enough for an orbital fracture then you’re gone and your stuff will be sitting on the steps when you come by, even if it was going to be your last game. The way Moorehead handled it speaks volumes about him...and not in a great manner.
Also, anyone think Moorehead is sleeping with Touchdown(less) Tommy’s mom or Stevens has dirt on Moorehead? I mean he is the non gift that keeps on giving. Almost fee like this is orchestrated so he can start. I wish Stevens and Moorehead both would move along.
Search the case law and ask your local DA, but I am stating only what the defense bar already knows...
No weapon = no agg assault
—Remanded back to JC for prosecution as a simple assault...
Are cowbells deadly weapons, or just a badge that proclaims, "look at me, I'm more redneck than Alabama fans".
At MSU, you only get a one game suspension for beating a woman. So no surprise that Gay is not going to be suspended for beating the QB.
Sorry, Bubba. I WAS DA until I retired. If the injury caused is serious, a weapon is not required for the offense to be aggravated assault--no matter what your defense bar friends told you.
We are who we are Sad but true
Be careful... every time a quarterback gets in a fight, Old Miss tries to recruit them... lol
Seems that everyone is missing the possible irony. Word is that the meeting between Cohen/Moorhead after the Egg Bowl lasted four hours. One would have to think that one of the topics was - why didn't we play the tough, physical, type of football that MSU has played for years every week? So Moorhead, in contrast to last year's bowl practice, agrees with the boss and intended to return to a physical style of play starting immediately. (I don't know what Cohen said in his evaluation. I do know that many fans felt we played soft some weeks. I also know that bowl practices were widely reported as being very physical this year.) As an MSU grad I'm not embarrassed. But I do feel like since Willie broke it, Willie should fix it. That is - I want to see a physical game Monday with Willie Gay at QB!!
A shit storm is moving through Stankvegas. Better sound the alarm. SLO Jo Mo is a bit hard of hearing.
Maybe the ESPN play by play color commentary at the game will confuse us with "Mississippi" when discussing this matter.
4:05.... Ole Miss signed a kid after a hazing rape charge. Be careful where you throw that rock considering all your glass walls.
I have lots of MSU friends and try to pull for their teams. But the culture is just plain weird. Gay is just the recent example. Remember QB Fitzgerald flipping off his opponents while being carted off the field. No comment from the coach.
Remember the OL who intentionally stomped defense players in several games. No comment from the coach. No suspension.
So now Gay’s incident yields no comment.
Perhaps this is an institutional problem. After all the AD was the baseball coach who allowed the jerseys (Lite Brite version) that included the phrase F*#k the Rebels.
My MSU friends don’t like it but apparently the decision makers are fine with this culture.
I bet Schrader offered to help Gay with his homework.
Time to get rid of a coach that allows this crap.
This whole thing is overblown. It would only be big time news if it happened to TSUN/Bears/Landsharks.
I finished at MSU in the mid 80's. The football "jocks" have always been f_kups. There has never been any discipline and no coach has ever been able to control the players.
Maybe it's like this everywhere, but MSU has a "wild west" atmosphere among the athletes.
Bad behavior has always been rewarded, no matter what.
Boys will be boys...But, let's step back and compare it to the off field behavior of Chad Kelly and Bonger Nkeimdiche. Talk about cowardice coaching and thug behavior!
And, allow me to remind you, 4:05, the boy who got a suspension was in high-school when he kicked the female classmate. Who the hell EVER got suspended at TSUN?
You Bear-Shark-Rebelettes are so damned amusing when you answer the clarion-call to come out en-masse and priss around.
As a MSU grad I am very disappointed in the lack of control of the football players. It is initially the coaches fault but the president of MSU fault. Gay was suspended for cheating and fighting before this. It says a lot about the MSU leader ship and it’s not good.
A LB pinching the starting QB, breaking the orbital bone and causing him to miss a bowl game is a big story. MSU tried to hide it. Moorhead should not let Gay play in the bowl game, otherwise it appears the inmates are in charge.
11:23 did not graduate from anywhere. Troll elsewhere.
@12:52, he punched him. Pinching is what they do at OM.
Moorehead probably has some sort of bonus tied to winning a bowl game, so that's all he really cares about. So get ready for Gay to start or sit out one set of downs.
" And, allow me to remind you, 4:05"
That's too funny!
Well MSU Professor of Turf Grass Management, . . . allow me to reply . . . I live in Hattiesburg.
We laugh at the metrosexuals in Oxford as much as we laugh at the rednecks in Starkville.
Southern Miss . . . "To the Top !!!! "
7:15: He didn’t only kick the woman on the ground. He punched her. I don’t know if you are attempting to mislead or just speak in out of ignorance.
An "overblown" shit storm blew through Stankville this week, but Slo Jo Mo never heard the warning sirens.
MSU and academic integrity of a MSU degree: female tutor takes 5 tests for each player, and writes 2 papers. The female is fired, of course, for enticing unsuspecting young scholars. The 10 males are giving standing ovations for their courage and free college tuition, room and board, and get to live on a resort setting.
"Moorhead should not let Gay play in the bowl game, otherwise it appears the inmates are in charge."
Glad to see you finally seein' daylight, but, where have you been for the past two years?
Now...The question in my mind is this: Is assault (a third offense) not more serious than smoking weed or breaking curfew twice, both of which land you on the bench?
Moorehead is obviously worried about his own retention more than credibility and ethics.

Ghost of Jackie, watch this video again and see if you want to stand by the just kicked her argument.
Walt Kelly was right. We demand wins and dog the coach into oblivion if we don't get them, but we act all indignant when he has to recruit players like Willy Gay and Garrett Schraeder to win. There isn't a finer man, and not very many better football coaches, than Tom Osborne, but he put up with Lawrence Phillips because he knew losing games would cost him his job. Just grab a mirror if you want to see whose fault this is.
Actually, the players are in control. They could rat out the school for paying them to sign. It goes on everywhere.
No mo Slo Jo Mo.
"At this point what difference does it make?" Whether he kicked her twice or punched her once and kicked her twice...He was a student in high-school at the time.
The question should have been "Do we want to recruit this guy and have him join our team with that behavioral background?" I am NOW and was THEN of the opinion that we should have severed, at that time, whatever relationship existed. I don't want thugs on my team or representing my institution. Period.
Requiring that he sit out games for something he did in 'a prior life' was nonsense. It's like putting somebody in jail here for a crime they committed in another country before they became a US citizen. And it's like hiring an applicant and initiating a disciplinary action for something he did while employed elsewhere. It's nonsense. And I AM A GRADUATE OF MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY.
Still, none of it rises to the level of Nkemdiche attempting flight off a hotel balcony and public bonging or Reprobate Chad Kelly's behavior while both were wards of the Ole Miss Athletic Department.
But you Tee-Sunners keep on pinching and we'll keep on punching. And be sure to tune in this afternoon at 3:00.
I did and State sucked. How can a team be destroyed in two years. If Cohen had any guts he,d leave morehead in nashville.
Apparently, the wrong QB was knocked out of the game. Go Slo Jo Mo. Fo mo years!! Can't wait!
Cohen's record of coaching hires is beginning to look a bit questionable. We had the lover boy baseball coach, the under achieving basketball coach, and now Slo Jo Mo.
