The city of Jackson issued the following statement.
On Monday, December 23, 2019, the Jackson Meals Matter Task Force will partner with Chefs for the Culture, the Love JXN: Saving Ourselves campaign, and others to provide 500 free meals to local Jackson youth during the Christmas holiday break.
This year, JPS students will be out of school for 19 days creating food insecurity for youth and their families throughout the City of Jackson. For many students and their families, school breakfast and lunch are the only meals available to them during the week.
With schools being closed for the break, there is a great opportunity for the community to come together to ensure that every child eats every day.
The meals will be provided by Chefs for the Culture, a group of local, Jackson based Chefs lead by Aubrey Norman of 4th Avenue Lounge.

If students' families are eligible for SNAP what are they doing with the grocery money?
This will amount to nothing more than porch-sitting mommas sending their kids to retrieve a box for the adults. I don't reckon they'll include beer too, will they?
(obviously not for publication)
"For many students and their families, school breakfast and lunch are the only meals available to them during the week."
What the fuck does that mean? They can't figure out how to convert twelve bags of groceries bought on a SNAP to meals? Maybe we need neighborhood seminars. Light snacks will be provided.
Families that qualify for school breakfast/lunch programs do face a scarcity of resources when they are faced with providing 38 meals for each child living with them during Christmas holidays. My family along with other families are reaching out to those in need of help. The cost is minimal while the outcomes are heartwarming.
The "activists" have no real answers to the ever deepening problems in these communities so it makes them feel good to solve the "hunger problem" with all the excess food around the city. I guess it's better than doing nothing.
How about stop having kids you can't afford to even feed much less raise effectively.
Great! Now Momma can buy those lottery tickets instead of wasting it on grocery. Yea!
These kids can't help the situations into which they were born.
Yeah, there's no doubt a few will end up in Parchman Penitentiary within the next twenty years.
But for now . . . they are all innocent children.
Every kid deserves to be happy on Christmas morning.
And yes, I'm one of those "far right" old white men ( deplorables ) that advocates for these innocent children
Teach a man to fish he will eat for a lifetime. I grew up in southie... South Boston its a rough Irish neighborhood it's a white ghetto ultimately!!! I was 1 of 8 children. My parents worked 2 jobs and my mom cleaned houses on Saturdays as a 3rd job. We struggled but my dad refused to take a handout. I'm t4 years old now and I learned more from my dad about life than I did at UCONN and medical school. I'm thankful for my dad's life lessons. God rest his soul.
Hey kingfish, the fact that you posted this because you knew it would bring out the “they all on welfare, they can buy the groceries” crowd and not because you wanted to share a message about a benevolent deed just shows how much of a hateful scumbag you are. Leave the kids out of your hate inciting shenanigans!
More free food = more lottery tickets, bling, and blow.
So posting a press release about feeding poor children somehow makes me a hateful scumbag?
Of course you assume just because comments are allowed, that I agree with them. Sorry, I am not going to personally post whether I approve or disapprove of each comment made just to please you.

8:38 that’s wonderful for you but the kids down here usually don’t have a father present
Hi, I’m an armchair expert in everything who comments frequently on jacksonjambalaya.com because I cannot focus at work. I make enough money to stay above the poverty line because my employer has not figured out that I spend most of my day commenting on blogs and not working. And, I think I’m better than those who are poor for it. Of course, people who make less than me are lazy, which is the only reason why one is poor these days because America has been made great again. Oh, and I agree with all parts of the Bible that I think are against abortion and for using the government as a tool to keep two consenting adults from sleeping with each other because they are gay. I just ignore all the parts where Jesus made clear that you’re not a follower if you do not care for the poor.
Yep, all that stuff in the Bible about feeding the poor... that’s just a typo or something. I should ask for a link if anyone claims that’s what the Bible says.
I’ve always been told that you can be mean or stupid. But you cannot be both. The vast majority of you guys are both. Please, take the opportunity this New Years and resolve to change that.
My only comment about this is that we should ask the kids that are 6 and older to maybe pickup trash and such at the park before they eat so that they understand that not everything is free. Think about your grandparents and their work ethic nothing was free.
4:46 well said thank you
6:58 you’re pathetic how sad I am for you
This would be a great teaching opportunity to help ALL kids understand that free stuff is not real. Let the kids spend the morning cleaning up the neighborhood while singing Christmas carols, then feed them. Teaching kids that free stuff SHOULD be available is inviting trouble later in their lives, no matter how good your intentions might be.
I am 68 years old and live in a tough neighborhood in Jackson. Every year I have at least four or five of the neighborhood kids rake and clean my yard during November and December so they can EARN some Christmas money. It costs me a few hundred every year but I love doing it and the kids benefit. Some are now college students and they still thank me. I could just handout the little money or food, but I don't think it would send the best message. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
9:02 you are correct and not as mean spirited as the guy who wants 6 year olds to work before eating
Hey 9:30 I'm that guy. You need to grow up and understand that children should be taught chores and responsibility. My kids had to make their beds when they were 5, even though it wasn't a great job, before they went to school. All I'm saying is that they can help for 15 minutes so that they understand being responsible. You can't just give out free things and expect a good outcome.
@4:46
Most people are poor because they lack the foresight and self control to think about tomorrow. Sort of like the people buying $50 worth of scratch off lotto tickets every day while their kids get free lunch paid by government.
10:52, link?
4:46-In your rush to join the pious chorus, you fail to recognize that, if you dig a bit deeper, the Bible DOES NOT admonish us to feed the poor. We are admonished to care for those who are either lame or sick or blind and CANNOT care for themselves. Do you understand the difference?
Since 1964, we have 'fed and cared for' five generations of people who were fully capable of contributing to the economy and pulling the wagon, but refused.
Why the hell can't liberals understand this?
@4:43, so how do we keep all those whites off food stamps? They've had every advantage they can get and yet they still require the most benefits. I don't pretend to know the answers as to why all these whites are so needy, but I don't think you will find any answers in a fictional book.
