Lottery Reports First-Week Sales of $8.9 Million

The Mississippi Lottery Corporation issued the following statement.

The Mississippi Lottery Corporation (MLC) is thrilled to announce sales for the first week (six days) brought in $8,932,200 million resulting in approximately $1.9 million for roads and bridges around the state.

“Overall, retailers and players were very positive and excited that the lottery is finally here,” said MLC President Tom Shaheen. “The top-five selling counties for the week were Hinds, Harrison, Rankin, Lee and Forrest.”

In addition to positive sales, players cashed in more than $3.8 million in prizes with a number of large winners. Top prizes claimed ranged from $2,000 to $15,000. All but one winner chose to remain anonymous.

Four more scratch-off games will be available at all retailer locations on Tuesday, December 10.

The new games include:

$1—Fast $50s: Win up to $2,000!
(12--$2,000 prizes)
$2—Jewels 7s Doubler: Win up to $20,000! (4--$20,000 prizes)
$2—Money Bags: Win up to $20,000!
(4--$20,000 prizes)
$5—Mississippi Blues: Win up to $100,000! (4--$100,000 prizes)

“People love variety,” said Shaheen. “Our plan is to introduce four new scratch-off games once a month. In addition, Powerball® and MegaMillions® will go on sale January 30, 2020.”

I wonder why the reporter didn't do some simple math and ask the following:
8.9 million in sales minus 3.8 million in prizes equals 5.1 million. Of that, 1.9 million goes to roads and bridges leaving 3.2 million. Now, I assume the Lottery Corporation had some hefty start up costs and day to day expenses, but it would be nice to have a little transparency here. What happens to the 3.2 million left in the kitty?

I'm having fun with the lotto. It's not hurting anyone as far as I can see.

I'm very excited to see which draw style games they bring to Mississippi!

Still hoping for the daily drawn Cash4Life Lotto like they have in Tennessee! Draws every day for a chance at $1000 a day or $1000 a week 4Life!

As the legislative session approaches, we all know damned well the wheels are already turning as to how that money can be diverted from its original intent.

Whether with Tater or Dewbert or any of the hundreds who will be seated, we all know those wheels are turning.

And not the least of the unfortunate spendings will be the Lottery Commission holding its meetings at gaming venues from one end of the state to the other, racking up meal, travel and lodging expense reports. That's a drop in the bucket, but speaks loudly.

@9:50
You may be confusing the Gaming Commission with the Lottery Commission. If you are not, then by all means post the dates and locations that the Lottery Commission met at a gaming venue. Otherwise, stop spreading falsehoods and no, I'm not on the Lottery Commission.

Not worth my time at the moment. I’ll jump in when it’s enough to pay off my house, otherwise I can clear that with an honest day’s work. Not mention that it’s more rewarding knowing that your income is earned.

Gimme Summa That, maybe we should structure the state government after the Jackson City government.

We know how well they've done over the last thirty years. Once the little bastion of tax payers leave the northeast part of the city what is the Bold New City going to do then, have the so called city workers(term used loosely) do, start picking up discarded aluminum cans to sell?

As bad as their credit rating is, it's a wonder they get any business to extend credit to them.

If they can afford the lottery, they don't need welfare.

What do you wanna bet that 10 years from now we still have crappy roads and bridges?

@9.40 AM

The Lottery Corporation, or whatever the name of the company is that manages the lotto for the state, uses a significant portion of the proceeds from ticket sales to operate the lottery. Much of it is spent on marketing/advertising (billboards, tv ads, radio ads, internet advertising), and there is the cost of technology, etc. I think on average about 20-25% of the ticket sales end up in the state coffers.

your chances of winning the big pot are almost as good if you don't buy a ticket. Poor man's tax.

@1:29
But without a ticket you have 0% chance. And it's not that hard to come up with $2 to play when filling up your gas tank. Spend $5 and get a scratcher to play instantly. It's just fun!
Why didn't so many haters come out of the shadows when sports gambling was legalized? Oh yeah, you mouth breathers love your sportsball!

Another big winner announced! A woman in Collins purchased $20 in $1 scratch offs and won $3000! I'm sure she feels dumb!

Why doesn't the state get involved in pornography production while they're at it?

Anonymous said...

That should just about cover the cost of Tater's new road.

All you bleed'n hearts crying about the po' folks spending a couple bucks to by a lottery ticket and calling it a tax.....

Jesus, give it a frik'n rest. I don't hear you moaning and groaning about them spending $5 for a pack of Cigarettes or $8 to $12 for a bottle liquor (or twice that price for a bootleg bottle at their local juke joint with no tax). You think on a Friday night they're not at their hole in the wall crap / card games??? If so, then you are some stupid head up your ass fools.

Even better, wait till a new iPhone comes out and watch 'em line up to get at least two ( one for baby momma / daddy and one on the sly for friend gal or friend boy ).

There is nothing you can do about stupid...that is why most of them are poor and the rest are just lazy and have been for two or three generations.

So if they want to buy a ticket or two, well good luck to them. It will make no difference, because within 1 to 2 years, they'll be broke and poor again fron the same old bad decisions.

You need to win a 250K jackpot to afford dinner with Tate.

December 5, 2019 at 10:27 AM: My post is speculative as to future commission meetings. We have no information relative to their prior meetings.

@3:38
Pornography is already legal in Mississippi. The legislature simply decriminalized the Lottery. Just like the legislature has the power to decriminalize all forms of vice that it currently deems illegal.

I'm hoping someday they will decriminalize duelling so we can rid ourselves of the many dishonorable charlatans in our midst.

10:27 - If you're not a member of the Lottery Commission, you have no damned idea where they've met or plan to meet. How could you?

Cynical Sam said...

If they can afford the lottery, they can afford to buy their spawn's school lunches.

Cousin Eddie said...

It is heartbreaking news to think that one of the poorest states is using the lottery to get money. It is a regressive tax on the poorest among us. More than 60 percent of lottery tickets are purchased by those who fall int the bottom fifth socio-economic bracket. It looks like exploitation of the poor. Proverbs 14:31 warns: He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for the maker.

Anonymous said...

Why are so many assuming only or most lottery hopefuls are poor?

Anonymous said...

Well cousin Eddie just feel free to tell the IRS to add another 30% to your tax with holdings if you're so touchy feely about the poor.

The real poor is only about 3% of the so called "poor" and very few of that percentage will buy a ticket, the rest just jerked around in school and failed to get an education to better themselves and the rest are just plain sorry & lazy waiting for soft touches like you to bemoan and cry about their so called plight.

Just watch when they drive up to buy their "poor tax" lottery ticket. They're driving a $1200 POS car with $3000s worth of wheels and tires on it, talking on their $700 iPhone. They could do better, but they have no incentive to become any better, they just keep making one bad decision after another and fail to learn from it.

People like you and your self righteous brethren have no idea what goes on in the real world, because you live in a constant state of denial. Myself, I don't feel sorry or care what happens to them or you for that fact, because I didn't have hand in causing their problem.

@11:14, I would wager that you claim to be a Christian.

@12:45, not on your life would I want to be associated with a bunch of mindless individuals who hire a song & dance man to tell them every week how sinful they are, then believe that "sh*t".

The only reason morons like yourself go to church is to try impress others at your church when you drive up in your new car or talk about your new house, but the number 1 reason is to make yourself feel better about slipping around on your wive(s) with your secretary !!!!

So shut up before you embarrass your self with more stupid statements.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
