The Abuse of Sheldon Alston, Jr.

The beatings end, but all too often the abuse continues for women suffering from domestic violence in Mississippi.  The victim impact statement of Sheldon Alston, Jr.'s ex-girlfriend gives a glimpse into the ordeal women face as they try to recover from physical abuse.  The statement (posted below) tells the story of a young woman beaten and kidnapped by a scion of the privileged, one of the favored few in the Giant Country Club that is Mississippi.

The statement describes Alston's attack.  It tells the story of what took place afterwards as the young woman recovered, facing challenges she couldn't not have imagined just a few days earlier.  There was an inability to trust the police. Days of tears.  Frustrating attempts to get justice.  "I felt as if all the lawyers in Mississippi were ganging up on me to protect Sheldon and do a favor to his extended family of legal experts" said the victim, describing her own lawyer who advised her to sell out her justice. Meanwhile the family of her abuser seemed to be more concerned with young Sheldon's ability to go to law school one day instead of  her beating.  Must preserve the ole family heritage at all costs.  The statement is a story that should be read, as it represents too many women in the Magnolia State.

Alston is serving three years in prison after he pleaded guilty in June to aggravated domestic violence.  He pleaded guilty in a Union County courtroom with no notice posted in the court file.  He will be eligible for parole after only 18 months.  The prosecutor dropped the kidnapping charge.  Alston is the grandson of the late Alex Alston and former Supreme Court candidate Flip Phillips.  Earlier post on sentencing.

Is the problem more prevalent in Mississippi than other states?

Anonymous said...

So much for Alston Sr. being such a great guy and ethical lawyer.

Anonymous said...

She comes across as strong, sincere, brave, and level headed.

Both of the Alstons look bad in this.

Apparently all three of the boys in this generation have serious drug and behavioral problems.

Anonymous said...

His family of enablers allowed his behavior to increasingly become worse and worse, and more dangerous. Had he been held accountable while still in high school, some of this could have been averted. Each time he broke a rule or law, it was "taken care of", and he never had to face the facts of what he did.

Now a young woman is forever scarred in ways she may not even know yet, because of the failure of his parents to make him accountable for his actions.

He'll get out of jail and he'll probably be given a new car, rented a new apartment, and buy his way into some college and graduate.

This should show everyone how politics works. Because that piece of crap has a name, he got 3 years. So when he gets out in less that a year and kills her, then what

Wow! After something like this, can there be another entity involved so that she really sees justice?

I don’t think he would have made it to trial if he had done that to my daughter.
This won’t be the last mug shot of this young lad on this website.
He will graduate to bigger offenses, even if the governor gives him a pardon.
Fixing all of your kids problems for them isn’t always the best solution.

If I had a daughter treated like that, I'd for sure be knocking on the parents front door. I'd tell the father that he had one of 2 options: I whip his ass and he could pass it along to the son, or he let me give the ass whippin directly. What a sack of shit family to have seen the pictures and say "oh it will mess him up on getting into law school." Too bad.

Yeah, the other entity would be the girl’s dad putting a bullet in the kid’s head to save the next girl he abuses in 18 months.

Dang, I'm disappointed. From the headline, I was sure I was going to read about how young Jr. had already started receiving his abuse now that he has been moved to the big house.

Instead, I get to read again the sordid story of how the POS abused his "girlfriend" before he kidnapped her to keep her quiet. A story that needs to be told so that his parents and grandparents friends and neighbors will know what kind of sorry shithead the spoiled brat is.

But KF - if you should get a report out of Parchman that would confirm he has started receiving his, please let us all in on the story.

I don't know if there is a Civil suit pending, but if not I certainly hope there will soon be. Having to pay out the a*% won't keep this scum from assaulting another lady, or this lady, again. It also won't do away with her suffering, both physical and mental, but surely it will make life easier for her. I wish I was an attorney so I could represent her pro bono.

4:58 the kid is a broke kid.

The only way payday was gonna happen was if she shut up and let it slide.

Now that Sheldon is headed up river for 3 there will be no pay day for her.

She prob did a good thing...but in 3 years she’s gonna want a new car or some new furniture and that non existent settlement of $500,000 or $1,000,000 tax free is gonna stare at her in the mirror....and young Sheldon will be a reformed minister making tons of money off how he repented and found Jeeezus!

And Sheldon will still treat women like shit...he just won’t get caught.

And so it is

Good chance some ol boy might whip papa sheldon’s Ass before its over with. Jail is not the end of punishment for Sheldon. There’s more than a few cons who really would go back to the pen so this kid will pay for this girl’s pain. Law of the Jungle, folks.

Sincerest of thanks to KF for posting the Victim Impact Statement. It is powerful. It gives great insight into what the victim has had to go through even after that night from the hands of the family and the establishment of influential people. She not only fought the system, she had to fight her our lawyers while NOT being heard or understood.

People crawled over each other to sniff his dad's ass at school events.

He graduated from Millsaps this past May. I know that he graduated with excellence in his comprehensive exams. I wish I could remember his major, maybe anthropology or something along those lines. He did not graduate with distinction or receive any other awards. My daughter was a senior when he enrolled there. He was in the class behind her. I quickly let her know about his pending charges so she could let her friends know what type of person he was. She was shocked and disheartened by the amount of girls that defended him and said he would NEVER do anything like that-

I know young Sheldon. None of this surprised me when I first heard it. He has always been an entitled little ass. And he has always been a mean hearted bully. I don't know his father, but I would like to whip his ass for enabling such a punk. I do not know this young lady, but from knowing Sheldon as I do, I believe every single word she says. Terrible, just terrible.

And let this be a lesson for young ladies. Run from these type of bad boys. Immediately. They will not change. Forget good looks, money, status. Your life and self worth is worth so much more. There are too many good men out there for a woman to have to tolerate losers such as this punk. I hope he enjoys prison.

I wonder if Dewey Cheatem and Howe will be hiring after the young man has served his time?

Lots of face egg to go around here. First why would a sane person drive 16 miles west of Oxford -- which sounds like Panola County to me -- with a drunk who had just assaulted her on the Square?

Second, you spoil children, especially young men, at their great peril. Unearned wealth is poison to character development. It's just that simple. Some folks who envy wealth and power do not understand how hard it is to get a good citizen out of an indulged male child.

Third there is no bigger political slut in the state than Ben Creekmore, himself the product of a rich and powerful Union County family -- where the plea was had. This kind of sweetheart deal is normal for connected folks, such as the former Oxford PD drug court officer who was allowed to deal down sexual battery to a records keeping violence. The son of a former ADA is presently serving federal time. His parent, it is said, made evidence disappear of a murder wherein the lad was suspected while on staff.

So far as him being a lawyer . . . even the slack Mississippi Bar character and fitness crew would not permit such a thing. He's the family rental property manager in training. Or something. Kinda like Ben's brother.

I feel sorry for everybody involved -- except the DA's office.

“Second, you spoil children, especially young men, at their great peril. Unearned wealth is poison to character development. It's just that simple. Some folks who envy wealth and power do not understand how hard it is to get a good citizen out of an indulged male child.”

Well said and exactly on point. I myself had tendencies in the direction of an over indulged male white child, except without the violence component. (I do not know how such child rearing manifests itself in children of color or women of any color. . . but these are other issues). I was told that I was special, different, brilliant, and entitled. Direct quote from my father: that rule does not apply to you because “you are a Xxxxxxx.” Fortunately, somewhere along the line, I became “woke,” and realized that I was none of these and made a conscious effort NOT to conduct my life in the manner of a Sheldon Alston. This was one of the two best decisions I ever made.

I wonder if the victim can get a judgement against little Shelly, maybe attach his trust fund, so when he does get some money she may be appropriately compensated for the crimes he committed against her? Just wondering out loud, but might there be other women who were assaulted by Shelly that may wish to come forward in the vein of “Me too?”

I don’t know who said it originally, but “It’s more important to have character than to be one.”

Sheldon Sr has zero liability for his sons criminal acts.

Sheldon Sr and the real money Flip could have made the girl wealthy but she’d have to give up the criminal part.

Now Sheldon Jr is in a cell for the lease term of a new car and he will survive to live another day. This place loves a reformed abuser/alcoholic/drug dealer....Hell he may get his own church one day.

She has zero $$$ wise from it and trust me I’ve seen it a lot.....she will second guess her decision.....for the rest of her life.

She did the right thing imo.....but all Decisions have certain consequences.....

Anonymous said...

Just wondering out loud, but it'd be curious about any liability associated with the use of the grandfather's (Alston or Phillips? Anyone know?) cabin, not to mention the use of "Shelton's" house and "Shelton's" vehicle. I would be surprised if he had the independent means to supply himself with much of anything and if the access to and use of any of the above were supplied to him by someone who could be reasonably charged with knowledge of his propensities, that might expose them to at least a justiciable claim of liability. It would certainly be interesting if Flip Phillips were put in the position of arguing for the defense, especially his own.

Anonymous said...

Since when is it OK for a family member of a criminal defendant to attempt to buy off a prosecution witness (in the case, the victim)?? How is that not witness tampering? And if that family member is an attorney, how is he not the subject of a mandatory Bar complaint by the witness/victim's attorney? And if the witness/victim's attorney actually encourages his client to accept the "deal," how would he not than be involved in a criminal conspiracy of witness tampering? I'm not a criminal attorney, but this seems pretty obvious to me.

Anonymous said...

@11:08 are you talking personal injury and premises liability? I am sure if I got the shit beat out of me at someone's house, I would be suing them and they would be turning a claim into their insurance company.

Anonymous said...

I don't think young Sheldon's parents have any legal liability. They didn't kidnap and abuse this young girl. However, they raised him, they enabled him, and they refused to try to correct his behavior while he was growing up. The way young Sheldon was raised help lead him to think he "owned" this young lady. Young Sheldon felt "entitled" to her.

Anonymous said...

What's with all the "Young Sheldon" crap everybody? He's a worthless POS grown-ass man whose future is going to end up being even worse. He has no idea how to live in the real world....and will have future problems working anywhere near women once they find out who he is. Think law school? Ha! The look in those eyes are dead.....and that won't change. Everyone's going to realize he's a ticking time bomb. He'll be on a family allowance until he's forty, then get arrested for domestic assault while doing meth with a distant cousin....the Alstons indeed.

Anonymous said...

He's "young Sheldon" the son, as opposed to his Father of the same name.

Anonymous said...

11:08AM here, and I'd not dismiss the idea of his parents, the grandfather that owned the cabin, and/or whoever was paying his bills having at least _arguable_ liability, depending on what discovery might uncover as to their knowledge and enabling conduct. I'll just say that many scoffed at "affluenza" as a viable defense to DUI/vehicular homicide. If it can be shield, why not a sword? In any case, its viability would depend on what discovery might reveal, what her lawyer could get a judge to go along with and a jury to believe, as very possibly an appellate court to opine about, not opinions (mine or anyone else's, however well-reasoned) on JJ. I am not suggesting it is or is not viable. I do not know enough of the relevant facts. I would suggest that I can envision a fact set that could and would make such a complaint justiciable or at least not frivolous. I can also envision a fact set that could get it into federal court and that would be very interesting litigation.

Anonymous said...

Sounds similar to those who beat up the City of Jackson in the water deal. If the Alston family had ponied up, they too could have buried the story on this blog too.

Anonymous said...

@1:52 I've used the words "young Sheldon" on here several times. I use it to differentiate Junior from Senior. So I call them "young Sheldon" and "old Sheldon". Even if dad was 80 and son was 55. Rather than Junior and Senior. It doesn't mean he is young. It just means I'm referring to the youngest of the 2 Sheldon Alstons.

Anonymous said...

The victim drove the two of them to the cabin in her car and said herself she could have left but didn't know if he would hurt himself as he had threatened so it would be a hard case to make that Mr. Phillips had any liability whatsoever.

I have known this family since before these children were born and they are not in any way affluent acting - there is no trust fund, they drive used cars (some barely run) - they were and are good parents - Sheldon admittedly has anger issues and probably should be addressed (and very well may have in the past) - it sickens me to listen to idiots who have no idea what they are talking about skewer these parents.

Sheldon did an awful thing to this poor girl and should be punished and is being punished. Not sure why people are so spiteful and hateful. Sad story for all involved parties and all will be haunted by this for the rest of their lives. Let him serve his time and go do something productive with your own life!!

Anonymous said...

4:42 - "...and is being punished.."

You think spending a year in the pen is adequate punishment for this punk? If this hadn't been in granddaddy Phillip's political backyard, or if Sheldon Jr wasn't rich and connected, he would have never received this light of a sentence and have it handled in such a manner (taking years to get into court allowing him to graduate from the honored Milsaps, having his case mysteriously transferred at the last minute to another county to avoid publicity, having parents and grandparents trying to buy off the victim - which is probably illegal, but who is going to prosecute these families, etc.)

Yes, a three year sentence is punishment. But will get time served, out in less than 18 total months, plus will probably move to a halfway house after nine. A poor black kid (or white for that matter, as long as the poor still stands) selling an ounce of maryjo would serve ten times the days in the big house that this spoiled kid was handed.

Justice. Yes, if you are rich and powerful.

11:08/2:52 again, in response to 4:42PM.

I missed the part about him driving her car to the cabin, so that pretty well ends the possibility any claim(s) against the vehicle owner/provider. I'll stick by the _possibility_ of a claim against the cabin owner (and to a lesser extent, the owner/provider of his residence), however, and in reading her narrative a bit more carefully, apparently she had enough familiarity with the location of the cabin that she (allegedly) "already knew" where he was headed when he didn't stop at her sorority house. That would at least suggest that she had been more than once and could mean he had unfettered access to it. Granted, this her un-rebutted, unchallenged version of events but it seems generally credible on its face based on what has been reported and his guilty plea.

One thing that did jump out at me in my re-read was that he went to sleep but she remained awake. I didn't see mention of her access to her car or its keys, but that along with a few other such missed opportunities to get away from him would be cause for pause. Before anyone freaks out, I understand that a scared, beaten young girl cannot be expected to react with cool deliberation, so this girl not fleeing at every or even any possible opportunity might be explained - might be explained, not is explained. Again, without discovery, etc., there are lots of unknowns and I will refrain from making many assumptions about the specifics. I would suggest that the apparent objective fact that she did not escape given several opportunities throughout the ordeal may well have played a part in his plea bargain and sentence.

Lastly, I will sadly observe that the undisputed conduct of every licensed attorney (including the judge re: his "cramming fun" commentary and possibly excepting Alex Alston re: his Alzheimer's diagnosis prior to the events) connected in any way to this sad situation is a series of more black marks against a Mississippi Bar that has far too many already.

Anonymous said...

4:42, Read the Victim Impact Statement and then tell us how great this family is. Or maybe you did read it and still posted that comment, in which case I question whether you think she is exaggerating, or just outright lying. Clearly you have placed these people on a pedestal of some sort, and maybe you can't consider that maybe you misjudged them.

After all, these are good people and good people don't brutally assault women and their families don't try to bribe the victim to drop the charges. Good people don't do that, right?

I hope the victim takes the little POS to the cleaners in her civil suit against him. She can renew that money judgment forever, with accrued interest, if she follows the law and procedural rules, and it would not be dischargeable in bankruptcy because what he did was an intentional tort as well as a crime. If he eventually inherits from his rich family, she should be waiting in the wings. She also could periodically take his deposition to look for assets to pay her judgment. In brief, she can make his life a living hell as a creditor until she collects every penny owed to her. His family would then probably pay off the judgment so they can continue to shelter their little POS from the realities of life.

My prediction of SAjr is that he will find some new love who is pretty, but with less self esteem, less of a support system, who is more willing to tolerate bad behavior. He'll still be controlling, but he'll be even angrier, and disdainful of someone who allows themselves to be a doormat. That combination turns into the contempt that can lead to murder.

To be able to hang in there to get some semblance of justice rather than take a payout which I imagine would have meant the entire disgusting crime would have been swept under the rug. My most sincere wishes that she is able to find peace and go on to live a happy, fulfilling life.
Parents, schools, sororities overall, would be well instructed to instill in the females they have any sway over, that if one time anyone lays a violent hand on you, it is one time too many and that relationship ends there. No amount of apologies or excuses make it acceptable. And yes, call the police.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
