Senator Wicker Warns about Danger of Leaving Children in Hot Cars

Senator Roger Wicker issued the following statement.

Wicker Warns Against the Dangers of Leaving Unattended Passengers in Hot Cars

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today warned against the dangers of leaving unattended children in hot cars and provided tips and resources on how to prevent these tragedies.

“Since 1998, there have been more than 800 children who have died from heat stroke after being left in hot cars,” said Wicker. “This tragedy repeats itself every year, particularly during heat waves like the one we are experiencing. To prevent these heartbreaking situations, I urge Mississippians to take precautions, whether it is leaving your purse or cell phone in the backseat or having your childcare facility call you if the child has not been dropped off by a certain time. I would also urge my colleagues to pass the HOT CARS Act, which would require all new passenger vehicles to be equipped with a child safety alert system, and get this important legislation to the President’s desk before the end of the summer.”

Tips to Prevent Leaving a Child in an Unattended Vehicle:

·         Never leave your child alone in the car for any period of time.
·         Make it a habit of leaving your cell phone, briefcase, or purse in the backseat close to your child’s car seat.
·         When you leave your car, be sure to lock it so your children do not climb inside and become trapped.
·         Check the backseat every time you leave your car.
·         If you see a child left in a car, call 911 immediately.

Wicker is the author of the Helping Overcome Trauma for Children Alone in the Rear Seat (HOT CARS) Act, which would direct the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to issue a final rule within two years requiring new passenger vehicles to be equipped with a visual and auditory alert system to remind caregivers to check the rear seat. The bill would also direct states to use a portion of their highway safety program funds to educate the public on the risks of leaving a child or unattended passenger in a vehicle, and require DOT to undertake a third-party study on retrofitting existing passenger motor vehicles. Earlier this month, the Commerce Committee approved the HOT CARS Act by voice vote.

Wicker has got to be one of the most worthless Senators in our nation’s history. How do these morons get this far up the ladder?

Good grief, is this all he has to work on? We need to dig up Whitten, Cochran, stennis,Eastland and Montgomery plus recycle Lott. The current crew is a bunch of lightweights.

If you are too stupid not to already know the dangers of leaving children in hot cars, then you don't have the mental capacity to understand what this article is about. Someone should explain that to the honorable senator.

Thanks Senator, for telling us all something we didn't know. Now that you have that ticket punched, inform us all on: the dangers of drunk driving, opiods are habit forming; cigarette smoking can be dangerous to your health; don't piss into the wind, etc, etc, etc.

First summer for you, Senator?

Cynical Sam said...

The senator has a firm grasp on the obvious.

You all that post here must live miserable lives.

So let’s see...white republicans voted the man into office.

Unfortunately, far too many children and animals die in hot cars...so why not use his platform to remind people of the dangers of leaving children and animals in hot cars.

As for people being stupid...yes they are!! That’s why every summer there’s a story about children and animals left in cars. Police and passer bus busting windows to save a dead or near death child or animal.

People leave children and animals in hot cars!!!!!

He's concerned someone might leave him in the back of the limousine.

Firm grasp on the obvious? One would think, but lets count the number of incidents where folks who don't have a firm grasp don't understand this simplistic issue.

And for all the Wicker-haters on this site (you show up every chance you get, whether its bitching about Wicker or any other current or future political figure) - get over it. You act as if this one press release is the only thing Wicker has done in the past decade. Yes he put out a press release on the speech he made on the Senate floor yesterday. Did you see his press release yesterday? Or last week? Or the dozens last month that addressed other issues? Obviously not since you seem to think this is the only thought this man has had since beating Ronnie Musgrove last decade. Think about what you would have today if it were Senator Musgrove you were addressing. (Well, at least Dr. Kubeler wouldn't be out an outlandish fee for poor legal services; maybe that's a plus from his viewpoint.)

Wicker needs out in 2024. Cares more about going to war with Syria than protecting our border. A RINO if I ever saw one.

4:35 - link?

I don't have a link to Wicker's involvement in helping solve the flooding issue in the Mississippi Delta. Primarily because there is no link to the non-existent.

@3:42 that is hilarious. Comment of the year nominee.

3:46, perhaps you can tell us all of the landmark bills that the good but not that bright senator has led and passed. And please inform us of the many times the media has him in front of a camera or quoted due to the statesman like qualities he exudes.

yep, 3:42 nailed it

As a loyal constituent I take deep offense at these negative characterizations. If one child or one dog is saved by his reminding people of what should be so very obvious to all then he has done more to help folks than most of the useless swine who clutter the senate chambers.

Would we be better off if he were voting for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution?
How about LBJ's great War on Poverty -- which has provided us an entrenched underclass of illegitimate children to crowd our prisons?

I say the less they do the better off we are. I want less public involvement not more. At 75 I am more comfortable now than ever in my life. One of my contemporaries and I traded moon landing stories yesterday. We were both working high-paying union jobs -- up north of course where we had migrated for the work! He to finance his MC education and I (ultimately) to fund my first business venture. It was easy for us to find high paying work because Lyndon Johnson and the gutless United States Congress was busy slaughtering the very flower of our generation. Lots of work to go around when you draft 600,000 troops and send them to Vietnam FOR NOTHING.

Give me Roger Wicker any day. God bless Roger Wicker.

This legislation is offensive. Hey parent, you are too damn stupid to remember that your child is in the car with you, so we need to force-place an unnecessary device to remind you ... at your expense, of course. We are currently working on future legislation to remind you to feed, clothe and bathe your children as well.

"Give me Roger Wicker any day."

Rest easy Tonto...you've got him.

(run the damned traffic lights and piss on the fire hydrants)

@ 6:44 AM

I totally agree with you. Vietnam was carried on by LBJ & other presidents because each spineless president didn't want extract the troops. I was in Nam in 1970-1971. It was a waste of men & material. I did my duty & returned home to a nation that hated the military. So, many elected officials want to stay in office at the expense of the nation. I agree Wicker needs to be backing Trump & not the Democrats of the left.

3:39. Are saying there are no black Republicans? Maybe he was speaking only to black Democrats? Thanks for pulling the race card.

More "nanny state" legislation.

This was a very compelling and informative piece. I will sit down and discuss this with my wife, as we make all major decisions as a group. As a Mississippian, Roger Wicker speaks directly to the people on important matters.

Anonymous said...

Hey Roger, why not tell the people about the dangers of iv drug use, and while you are at it, give investment advice like stay away from Madison timber ponzi schemes.

Anonymous said...

When Wicker speaks (which is rarely) I always want a second opinion. What's Cindy got to say about this?

Anonymous said...

Roger needs to just finish his term and go home... He's finished...

Anonymous said...

He needs to let people know it is not safe to run with scissors .

Anonymous said...

Wicker need to zip his lip.

Ok Roger...We get it: One should not leave children in a hot car. It's also true that politicians, like you, should not leave 600,000 acres of the Delta under water for seven months. Get ready for anthrax.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
