Dilbert Questions Bonnet Carre Use

Secretary of State Dilbert Hosemann issued the following statement.

In a letter sent to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann made an official request for the immediate review of the operating manuals and use of the Bonnet Carré Spillway and Morganza Floodway to end negative environmental impact in the Mississippi Sound and Louisiana marshes.

Secretary Hosemann, who serves as Land Commissioner for the State of Mississippi, also asked the Corps several questions regarding the operation of the Spillway, including why the Morganza Floodway was not opened this year and whether the Corps would support flexibility in the law regarding the operation. He requested answers within thirty (30) days following receipt of the letter.

“Simply put, we need more information to determine the causes and extent of damage so we can determine the next steps we need to take to protect our land, water, people, and resources,” Secretary Hosemann said. “We look forward to working with the Corps to find answers and solutions which address Mississippi’s needs concerning the operation of the spillways as they affect Mississippi and eastern Louisiana marshes.”

Since the Bonnet CarrĂ© Spillway has been opened twice this year, the freshwater intrusion into the Mississippi Sound has created devastating ecological damage to oyster reefs, fisheries, and marine life. The blue-green algal bloom has created water quality issues which have led to public beach closures along the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast, all to the Coast’s economic detriment.

Secretary Hosemann is planning to request to testify on this issue at the Mississippi River Commission’s next low-water inspection tour. In years past, he has testified before the Commission about damaging artificial flooding caused by the Old River Control Structure to 16th Section land in the southwest part of the State. Sixteenth section land is land reserved for lease to benefit public schools in Mississippi.

Kingfish note: Um, yeah. Lil ole M'ssippi on one side, Louisiana on the other with two major population centers, numerous refineries, chemical plants, and oh, don't forget barge traffic. A few hundred thousand oysters and beaches versus all that? Good luck.

KF, you are biased.

But you are right.

But of course Trump loves Bryant so I'm sure a big check is coming.

Kingfish, Louisiana stands as much to lose as Mississippi in the spillway being left open for too long. Their wetlands are affected as much as the man-made "beaches" in Mississippi.

I drove down Hwy 90 on the 4th and there was more than ample parking available . People are staying away from the sand as well as the water.

No we don’t have the same to lose. It affected the far southeastern part of Louisiana and all of the Mississippi Coast. The reasons for not opening Morganza are”it would affect large farms, ranches and the wildlife that live in the spillway”. Translation is rich people. I believe we have had 138 dolphin wash up on the beach and more sea turtles than that but they are worried about a few black bear that live in the natural flood way that the Mississippi River wants to flow.
Kingfish is right though we don’t stand a chance.

I would guess that Kingfish's knowledge on this subject is limited to swilling martinis and eating Oysters Rockefeller at Brennans. But, I could be wrong since Capt'n D's on 55 Frontage also has oysters.

all that's very eloquent mr dilbert, but the mississippi sound has been a shithole from way back when. dont try to blame it in louisiana. biloxi beach?????.......destin it aint

So Diller has tried again to find someway to inject himself into a controversy so he can get a little media attention. Athe least he can put out his own press release and toot his own horn to stroke his own ego, which really doesnt need any more stroking because he does it every chance he gets, and makes his staff (or should I avoid that term and say 'underlings') stroke it as well.

We should all be impressed that he told the Corps to get him an answer 'IN 30 DAYS'!! I'm sure the Corps will jump right on it since the Hon. King Delbert has so instructed them.

Glad to know that as 'Land Commissioner' he feels empowered to be able to tell the Corps how to manage the MS River. Why only last month he was suing the Corps because he claims the river has flooded some MS land -land that is located inside the levee. How's that coming out Dilbert? Collected anything on that rabbit trail one of your tax lawyer buddies led you down.

Let's all hold our breath in anticipation of Gilbert'a response from the Corps. I'm sure they will rewrite their operating manuals since he will take charge of the river's flow.

(Hint Delbert - just because the river carries the same name as our state, it isn't yours to handle. Plenty of other folks have an interest in it as well. But since Jay has jumped out trying to claim the high ground on this issue, I guess you figured you needed to pander as well.)

An still nobody cares
about the lower Delta. Those people have been underwater since February. Why is this not national news?

HaHa, he can ask all the questions he wants and request all their policy books.
New Orleans is two times as important than Missippi. Louisiana and the Corps will always control the spillways.

Kinda late, ain’t you sport?

12:38, it was several months ago. The world has moved on to other issues and crises.

Hosemann is your next Lt. Governor. Enjoy!

Houses have been waist deep under water with childrens' toys floating in Delta yards for six months. Bryant did a flyover, wearing his MEMA windbreaker, using his headset to ask the pilot, "What's that over yonder?" Then he was back at the mansion in time for lunch.

But, all is well since that youngster running for governor appeared in a photo op wearing wading boots and sunglasses, holding a sandbag.

And again no one gives a flying fluck about the South Delta. Why didn't the Core install the pumps? Why isn't the EPA getting strung up on the square over this? A half million to 750k acres underwater since February. Now there are chemicals and fuels all in that water, thousands of dead animals, and hundreds of thousands of acres of hardwood timber that is owned by the state that will most likely die from sitting under water for months in this heat. No income for lots of farmers, the stores in the south delta going out of business, not to mention how screwed these roadbeds will be when the water recedes. No, we are going to worry about a few dolphins(trout fishermen rejoice) and an ecosystem that well clean itself up in a few tide cycles once the valve is cut off.

We know why Tate wont say anything, because Billy VanDevander is his finance chair, but Dilbert? Screw all of them that don't care about a solution they CAN control in their home state.

Thank you Mr. Hosemann for at least doing something about this disaster. You and Bill Waller are the only people I have seen that are willing to get in the trenches to help. The Attorney General, Governor and Lt. Governor are MIA. The people will stand with those who stand for us. The rest of this bunch needs to be put on an inner tube and floated out of office asap.

Grandstanding Hosemann....nothing new to see here. Useless old man...

That's true about Tate and his finance chairman, millionaire Vandevender. Take a look at the letter (lambasting pumps) sent by Vandevender to every national official and eco group he could think of and had enough stamps for.

Vandevender does NOTHING that won't benefit him personally and financially. And apparently Tate, for some mysterious reason, does NOTHING without first running it by Vandevender.

But, back to Dingbart...at least he didn't mention autism in this latest press release.

Vandeven Der is one individual that has contributed to Reeves. One of thousands. If you really want us to believe your bullshit opinion that Vandevender has that kind of influence or control over Reeves, you are going to have to do better than just make the accusation. Yes Billy V is against the pumps - I have no idea why and just like many others, I disagree with him

But to think, or c laim, that Reeves is therefore against them is just plain stupid.

It's true that as LtGov he has sense enough (unlike Hosemnn, who thinks that anything he believes is absolute, and that the whole world will jump to when he expresses his opinion) Reeves knows that the feds ain't doing anything about providing the $400M for these pumps because of any political grandstanding he could do..

Once elected, he still can't change the federal governments handling of Steele Bayou or the Bonnet Carre spillway, but as Governor he could at least have a proper podium f r on which to scream. Unlike being 'Land Commissioner' and demanding operational manuals so he can backcheck the Corps actions.

Delbert's letter to the Corps does ask the right questions regarding the Morganza Spillway. I hope he gets the answers. The problem is that General Kaiser, Corps Spokesman Rickey Boyette and Rep Garret Graves will now pat themselves on the back and say. "We now know that we were right all along about keeping the Morganza closed because that would have added to Barry's rainfall in the Atchafalaya." Barry wasn't here 2 or 3 months ago. Hopefully our State leaders can have a voice and a seat at the table next year. Public hearings start in January on opening Bonnet Carre in 2020.

Someone from the Reeves campaign shows up at 7:31. A candidate for governor of this state should have immediately distanced himself from the loudmouth position of Vandevender. Yet, he did nothing and said nothing. But, the Cherub-Faced bank teller did send out his own letter, later and concluded it by saying, "Let me know if I can help". What a position to take when 10% of your state has been under water for six months.

Reeves isn't old enough to know why Mabus lost to Fordice. It was because the arrogant Mabus portrayed a 'screw you' attitude toward the Mississippi Delta in an almost identical situation as we now have. Reeves can always be a cook at one of Vandevender's hunting lodges.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
