FBI Grabs Exxon Robbers, Hero Foiled Robbery

Troubles worsened for three people accused of robbing the Exxon at I-55 and Northside Drive last week.  The trio of robbers engaged in a shootout with JPD at the Waterworks Curve as they fled the pursuing police.  Jackson Municipal Court Judge Jeff Reynolds denied bond for two suspects yesterday at an initial appearance for the charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault on a police officer.  A third is hospitalized. However,  the suspects took a trip to Canton instead of Raymond as FBI agents arrested them after the hearing in the courtroom.

Special Agent John Hunt is a member of the FBI's Violent Crime Task Force in Jackson.  He submitted an affidavit to U.S. Magistrate Linda Anderson as part of an application for an arrest warrant for Fred Nelson, III, Ashley Turnage, and Joshua Johnson.    The agents took the thuggish threesome into custody and charged them with violation of the Hobbs Act as they allegedly brandished a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

The two men currently reside at the Madison County Detention Center. Turnage is hospitalized due to a fractured back she suffered when she jumped off of a bridge. The affidavit provides more information about what took place that night:

3. The FBI is investigating an armed robbery of a business and has learned the following: On November 21, 2018, around 03:00 A.M., officers with Jackson Police Department (JPD) responded to an armed robbery at the Exxon Service Station, 4611 I-55 North, Jackson, MS. Witnesses reported that a gunman, later identified as Joshua Johnson, entered the business, pointed a gun at the business clerks and exited with approximately $374 in U.S. Currency from the cash drawers.

4. Upon JPD's arrival, officers made contact with a 2002 white Honda fleeing the scene. That same vehicle had been described to officers as the suspect vehicle. A pursuit ensued and suspect(s) from the suspect vehicle fired multiple rounds at the pursuing law enforcement officers. The suspect vehicle crashed around the Water Works curve area ofl-55, Jackson, MS and the aforementioned suspects fled the scene by jumping off of a bridge. All three suspects were eventually apprehended with one
suspect (Ashley Turnage) being transported to the University Medical Center with a broken leg and
fractured back.

5. JPD Officers recovered a silver .380 caliber handgun from the vehicle.

6. On November 21, 2018, JPD Detective Kevin Nash and FBI Agents John Hunt and Curlene Bell interviewed an eye witness who stated he was parked in front of the Exxon when he noticed a black male subject approach from the side of the store. The subject was wearing a green bandana around his face and carrying a silver gun. The subject entered the store and immediately pointed the gun at the clerks. The witness called 911 and while on the telephone with JPD dispatchers, the subject left store and went back in the direction from which he came. The victim pulled his vehicle around the side of the store where he noticed the subject getting into the front passenger side of a white care. The victim was attempting to retrieve a tag number of the white vehicle when he suddenly heard gun fire coming in his direction. The witness backed away from the area and noticed the suspect vehicle exit the service station and head in the direction of I-55 South. JPD officers began pursuit of the vehicle and the victim witnesses someone fire at officers from the suspect vehicle.

7. Incident to arrest, on November 21, 2018, JPD Detective Nash and FBI Agents (Task Force Officers) Hunt and Bell interviewed Joshua Johnson. After being advised of his Miranda Rights, Johnson confessed to robbing the Exxon station at gun point; however, he claimed "Slim" (Fred Nelson III) fired shots at the dark colored vehicle that approached them in the parking lot. Joshua Johnson claimed "Slim" fired the shots at JPD Officers as well. Johnson stated Ashley Turnage was driving the vehicle.

8. JPD Detective Kevin Nash and FBI Agents (Task Force Officers) Hunt and Bell also interviewed Fred Nelson III. After being advised of his Miranda Rights, Fred Nelson stated that Joshua Johnson drove the vehicle to the store and parked in an unlit area behind the store. Nelson indicated that Johnson went into the store and came out wearing a hoodie with a green/gray bandana over his face and carrying a silver gun. Nelson added that after Johnson came back to the car, Ashley Turnage moved over from the front passenger seat to the driver's seat. Nelson observed Johnson shoot several rounds at a dark car in the parking lot before getting in the front passenger seat and telling Turnage to [drive]. Turnage drove the vehicle at a high rate of speed on I-55; and during which time, Johnson fired additional rounds at pursuing officers.

9. According to responding officers, the said pursuit ended when the driver wrecked the vehicle and all three suspects fled the car on foot. After running approximately 150 feet, the suspects each jumped off a local bridge between Fortification Street and Woodrow Wilson Drive in Jackson, Mississippi.

10. An NCIC search confirmed that both Johnson and Nelson have been previously convicted of felony crimes.

We should let that leg and back "heal on its own."

The only bridge on I55 between Woodrow Wilson and Fortification is the one that goes over Laurel Street, which goes down to the waterworks after a gate that was put there many years ago. (Was open access when I was a teen.) That's quite a drop! The thieves had already proven they were stupid, but then doubled up on stupid with a jump like that. The other two are lucky they didn't break something as well.

Two more lucky winners to the Grand MS Taxpayers Resort and Lodge, all expenses paid.

What about a mugshot of Turnage? Hospitalized, but still, let us know who the bad guys (and gals) are.

Thug life--

Fred Nelson III actually comes from a decent home, so I guess he wanted to prove to his friends that he keeps it real with the streets!?

Do stupid things, win stupid prizes

Does this mean that anytime a crime is committed against a business within the Jackson city limits, the Feds will step in now? That is one way to clean up the problem, but something tells me they will be very busy.

It's because they brandished a firearm in the act of committing the crime. It's a violent offense. Which means they are in for some serious time.

So they will be looking at - For these crimes, the defendant is facing a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for each robbery count, 10 years mandatory minimum for each count of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

The FBI is charging them under the Hobbs Act. You can google it. It is a federal law they are charging them with. It looks like the police or FBI is circumventing the local courts because they know they will be let out soon enough. It seems like the Federal attorney for Mississippi has had enough of Jackson and Hinds County

This is interesting. Help me out if someone can think of another time in recent history that the Feds moved in on a Jackson crime simply because a weapon was used. Practically every business robbery involves a firearm. Will we see more of this? Will we hear from the mayor and his thoughts after running the FBI out re: officer related shootings?

So if the feebs make the collar does that keep the perps from Green's catch and release program?

@11:02. I hope it's true, but it's the US Attorney's office that will be busy. Local law enforcement does a pretty good job catching them, but RSS couldn't find a file to prosecute if it was in his Pearl bedroom. Here's to good news???

"Perception of Crime"

Thank you FBI, screw off Judge Green. This is the only way people will get prosecuted is by the feds. Now what you crooked ass judges going to do.

My source inside the JPD told me that the cops are beyond fed up with nothing happening to these type of thugs. They went to the FBI and asked them to take the case. Because of the armed violence, especially because they shot at the cops, the FBI gladly took the case.

Now you now the rest of the story.

Isn't this the Exxon owned by NE Jackson family the cradocks they have the basketball are an at ole miss named after them. I would not have the patience to deal with most late night convenience store shoppers. These 3 deserve the punishment they get. I'm thrilled judge Tomie Green isn't involved to set them free.

As an apartment complex owner in Jackson - I have lots of experience with the crime in this area. First thing is you wouldn’t believe how much of the population under the age of 50 will straight up side with a criminal over the police Dept (unless they happen to be the victim). Second, jpd does a great job catching the criminal especially considering the lack of help from citizens. They literally catch them nearly every time. Their motivation is low because they know they risk their lives to catch these criminals who never end up being held accountable unless they are dumb enough to accidentally cross county lines... I’ do worry what it will look like around here once the church going sweet tea drinking generation is gone and everyone is rap listening gangsta wanna bees.

Very light turnout at my NE Jackson precinct AGAIN. At least a lunchtime when I voted.

I thought all those churches and their congregants had moved to Ridgeland and Madison years ago. Other than Catholics, which denomination is left in greater Jackson? And we all know Catholics are all about sanctuary and open borders and handouts, so they get a pass from the thugs.

Folks on this site rarely say it -- but kudos to JPD! Quick response (arriving to gunfire, no less) and pursuit AND apprehension. It's often a thankless job in this city, particularly. THANKS, JPD.

Outstanding work by the FBI!!

Also, its a shame that bridge isn't about a 500 foot drop.........

You mean to tell me that C-Store is owned by white folk? Dayum! What's a Patel to do?

@ 8:43
Yes they own several stores statewide and own Craddick oil. Live in NE Jackson. Ole Miss basketball fans are familiar with them as the new arena has there last name on it... probably also responsible for coach Kennedy being fired as well. I still can't figure that one out. Oh well. Bjork does wjat he does and that's life.

@ 3:49,
I voted at Casey elementary in NE Jackson and there was a line out the door at 7:00 AM however the lady scanning drivers licences was totally clueless and had a hard time as she wasn't familiar with the process. People became disgruntled and began to leave. That polling place is always slow and well understaffed. Wonder why? Probably bc it's largely white at least 95% plus I would say. Took me 25 minutes of waiting and I was number 20 to vote. Unreal. Only worse poll workers are in broward county Florida I would imagine.

Will this FBI action get enough publicity to actually make the criminal element of Jackson realize they might get caught for real instead of Green’s revolving door???

Since President Trump appointed Mike Hurst as Federal Prosecutor, the Feds have taken many Jackson cases. Our Federal government realizes that we need help in the worst way to even dent crime in Jackson and some of the metro area. Thank heavens we have this avenue for recourse. Judge Jeff Weill was defeated yesterday and he was pure law + punishment for crime. Matt Allen was defeated and it is doubtful his opponent will be tough on criminals. The general attitude of letting criminals go free is the biggest motivator causing loss of Jackson's tax base to the suburbs. (That plus the education system.) What a shame that the majority voter in Jackson seems to count color more than law and order. They certainly seem too -- look at the DA as just one example.

7:39 - Please elaborate as to your comparison of the problems at your polling place and your 'largely white' comment.

Seems 7:39 believes the polling place is being targeted unfairly due to the large % of white voters. Not sure this is the case. Especially considering our sec of state lives near that polling place. Although I agree many poll workers are incompetent.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
