Matchbook Monday

Here is the second installment of Matchbook Monday.  Several matchbooks of Jackson's past are posted below.  Feel free to add your stories or any information about them in the comments section.  Judging by the traffic on last week's post, readers really enjoyed this bit of nostalgia. They can email copies of any old matchbooks they might have to kingfish1935@gmail.com.

The old Delta Point River Restaurant was the scene for many a romantic dinner as it overlooked the scenic Mississippi River in Vicksburg.  It is now closed but stays alive in this matchbook. The New York Times wrote about the restaurant in a 1991 story about Vicskburg:

Delta Point River Restaurant, 4144 Washington Street, (601) 636-5317, has fine views of the Mississippi and is as close as Vicksburg comes to elegance. It serves multicourse dinners featuring veal and beef, and dessert flambes are set afire at tableside. Dress is casual. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine, $55. A champagne brunch on Sundays, $12.25 a person. Places to Stay
It is now owned by the Ameristar Casino.

Next up is the matchbook for Maximillian's Restaurant & Lounge.

Then there is this interesting little matchbook for The Exchange Restaurant.  Interesting because inside the cover is a list of businesses and their stock prices.

The Exchange was in the basement of Capitol Towers, below the site of the old city auditorium.  These ads appeared in the Clarion-Ledger in the early 1970's.

Remember Delta Point, but never ate there though we did go to Tuminello's in V'burg once or twice. Maximillian's was across from the old Jackson Mall if I remember correctly, but you confuse me, KF, with the description of The Exchange's location. How could it have been "in the old city auditorium in the basement of Capitol Towers" when the auditorium was demoloished to build Capital Towers? Can't say I remember it regardless, which isn't surprising since I would have been in high school and/or college then, but that would have to be the same place where where was later a Fannin Mart Downtown.

I thought the Exchange was in the basement location where Underground 119 is now. I loved to go there in the early 70's and hear Skip Partridge and his band.

Also loved to see Stefan Anderson when he played at the Jolly Roger and later the Le Bourguignon Restaurant lounge. His "showtime" episodes were fantastic. I wish I had a recording of him doing "Desperado" and "53 Buick"....."I painted it with a broom, it had a big back seat and would go vroom, vroom, vroom!!!"

Problem is I'm looking at a 1975 Clarion Ledger ad (I'm posting Thursday) that says "Lower Level Capitol Towers). A 1972 ad says its under ground where the old city auditorium once stood.

Need more dates. I am 58 and think I remember some of this.

Delta Point was prom central. Steak & Ale, Dennery's, and Delta Point.

I miss the '80s.

Thanks for the clarification, KF. I'm at that point where if I get confused, I start doubting my memory.

Didn't Maximillian's have sort of a fern bar aesthetic?

We use to drive to Vicksburg for Sunday Brunch at Delta Point...GREAT FOOD.

I use to drive from Jackson to Vicksburg at least once a week to take my girlfriend out to eat at Tuminello's----it must have worked, we've been married 46 years.

Life back then was like Mayberry, USA---it was great !!!!!

Maximillian's was next to Jackson Mall in a little strip mall called "On The Avenue". There was also a record store (B.I.P. maybe?) and a clothing place called "Classy Rags". I knew things were starting to take a dive when they added "Classy Auto Sales" next door.

Not making that up.

The Caesar salad was made table-side at Delta Point, and was always very good.

Yep, Delta Point was the last place I’ve had a “real Cesar salad”. Wooden bowl , raw eggs , anchovies, etc. was great.... Jeff

Anybody remember Sami Jo?

This is fun kingfish keep it up. Last Caesar made table side was a child with my grandparents at the university club on a saturday night in the early 90s. It was excellent and where I learned raw eggs weren’t all bad!

1:37, that "Classy Rags" store started with another name as a somewhat upscale men's apparel store for African Americans. It was called Ric & Vic's. I actually worked with them briefly under the guidance of the SBA as a college senior. Nice guys, sharp dressers, but don't know if they made it or not or had to "give in" to Classy Rags.

Messick said...

As a food service industry veteran who prepared many Caesars table-side, the eggs we used were coddled, not raw. It may've differed by restaurant through different decades but this was in Kansas City during the 90s. The acid from the raw garlic helped "cook" it a bit more and added salt tightened the whites, as well.

There used to be a nightclub in the Quarter that was smoken. Anyone remember the name? This was the place I discovered how shy I really was.

@ 8:59, I think you are thinking about Poet's in the Quarter.

For a time period in the early 80's there was a restaurant/nightclub in the front right corner of the Quarter (where a liquor store is now located). It was a huge, but short lived, "place-to-see-be-seen". Remember hearing that one night the owner (who???) threw $100 bills off the second floor balcony to the dance floor below. Definitely before the '08 crash.

Man, Delta Point did a LOT of good for me! Short drive over, romantic dinner looking out over the river, short drive back.......wow. Great times! That was my go-to place!

Delta Point had a great pianist, too. He knew all the old standards, and could play just about anything you requested.

Wasn't life grand before everyone became racist............

My family owned Delta Point. These comments make me happy! We all miss it.

I went there in September 1991 on my way from Texas to New Orleans. Now I am 55 years and through the time I will never forget this beautiful place and city.

All my love from Germany

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
