Governor Phil Bryant introduced his appointee, Agricultural Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith, to replace the retiring Senator Thad Cochran to a crowd at the Train Depot in Brookhaven yesterday. Watch her speech below.
Mrs. Hyde-Smith begins speaking at 6:15.
State Senator Chris McDaniel responded with this statement yesterday:
“Today, I was troubled to learn that Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant dutifully followed the orders of the Washington establishment’s Mitch McConnell by appointing Cindy Hyde-Smith to fill the temporary vacancy created by Senator Thad Cochran’s retirement.
Before Commissioner Hyde-Smith was elected to lead the department of Agriculture, her only legislative experience was that of a Democrat. She ran as a Democrat. She served as a Democrat. She voted like a Democrat. Although her reputation in Jackson was that of a moderate Democrat, the last thing the state of Mississippi needs in Washington is another moderate Democrat.
Knowing the establishment’s opposition to conservatives, it was not at all surprising that they would choose a former Democrat. Nevertheless, I am pleased that Mississippi voters will have a clear choice in November for the open seat for United States Senate. They can choose from among the Democratic candidates or they can vote for a lifelong conservative Republican.
The establishment should have learned their lesson in Alabama. By spending millions of dollars against conservative Mo Brooks, they ended up losing the seat to a Democrat. Now, they are going to appoint one in Mississippi. Instead of unifying around my candidacy, and beating the Democrats, the establishment is once again going to waste millions of dollars of donors’ money over what should have been a safe Republican seat in Mississippi.
Fortunately, Mississippi Republicans now know what happens when the establishment tries to handpick their representatives for them – we end up losing seats and wasting money. The fact is, the DC establishment would rather let a Democrat have the seat than let a conservative win.
Mississippi needs to send a conservative to Washington to drain the swamp, and if elected, that is what I intend to do.”
Senator Roger Wicker said:
while Senator Thad Cochran applauded the appointment as well:“Governor Phil Bryant has made an excellent and historic pick in Cindy Hyde-Smith to be our next United States Senator. She served admirably in the Mississippi Senate and as our Commissioner of Agriculture, and I know she will be an effective, conservative Senator from day one. I look forward to being her colleague and working with her to serve all Mississippians.”
“I congratulate Governor Bryant on his historic selection of Cindy Hyde-Smith to represent Mississippi in the United States Senate. She is a very well-qualified person whose experiences and excellent character will benefit our state in Washington.”
Let the games begin!

Ask Thad if he wrote that. Ask Wicker what the hell he meant. Ask anybody what the hell Cindy Smith has ever done, proposed or accomplished. Be prepared for doe-in-the-headlights responses to all of those questions.
Is that the same state flag flying behind Bryant that his and Smith's alma mater won't fly on its campus. Axing for a friend.
Daughter at a very early age shot and killed a real large Stag from a great distance.
Cindy is unstoppable!
She is on her way to the White House!
Yep! Same flag that no university flies and no adult under 40 that got past the 8th grade.
Was that a eulogy?

I think I read this chapter before. It’s called “Sarah Palin.” She met a chinaman once and by damn they started selling our beef. Take that stag from a hunded-fitty.
I'm guessing that Cochran does not even know that he is resigning, much less who Cindy Hide Smith is.
The first vote will tell the tale; if McDaniel is in the runoff, it will be Senator Espy. So Republican voters need to vote CHS, regardless of preference.
...if McDaniel is in the runoff, it will be Senator Espy.
Because the RINOs would rather vote for a Democrat than to lose the ability to shove candidates down the throats of Republican voters.
The Mississippi Flag is not the problem. It's that someone has convinced some of you to have feelings about it. Learned behaviors. Grow up, the flag hasn't stopped anyone from achieving anything. None of you were slaves and few grew up in the civil rights era so your argument is invalid. Regardless of what some want to perpetuate we actually do have equal opportunity. Use it...stop making excuses
Ours is the most beautiful of state flags.
I see Russia and stags from my house!
For 35 years, I thought I was a Republican; but if Chris McDaniel is a Republican, then I guess I’m not.
This is what you get when nobody else wants the job
Look for another candidate to come out one that Republicans can support, and I don't mean Taggart!
Someone said (the Clarion uses 'sources say') that CHS was appointed because Bryant knew he could beat her when he runs for the seat. Now that, my friends, is a stretch. But, he's a mighty smart man, right?
6:56, those are good questions to ask, and I mean that seriously. Before electing someone we should know what they have accomplished.
But I have asked the same question about McDaniel on numerous posts here before and never received an answer from one of his supporters. So I'll ask again and would respectfully ask that you answer first since I've been asking this question long before CHS was ever appointed. What has McDaniel accomplished during his tenure as a State Senator ? What major piece of legislation or policy has he proposed and had passed since he's been in the State Senate ? I honestly can't think of one. I recall that he proposed term limits of two terms, but yet he himself didn't live up to that commitment as he's now serving his third term. What other legislation has he championed and passed ? I've said it before, McDaniel is a great stump speaker, but I'm not sure he is as good at effectuating or accomplishing what he says.
And yes, I think we should ask the same of any other candidate too.
Senator Beavis
Kingfish,
Is this guy seriously thinking about running...?
Carlos the clown is popping off on Facebook as if he is.
He leaves his clients hanging on the day of trial, but he thinks he can fight for the people of this state.

9:35, I'm not opposed to McDaniel because I don't want to lose the ability to shove my candidate down anyone else's throat. In fact I didn't nominate/appoint CHS or try to force her or anyone else on you. I just don't think McDaniel would be best to represent us. If they were to make a runoff, I would consider voting for Espy over McDaniel because Espy is a moderate not a flaming left wing extremist liberal like many Democrats in DC.
In my opinion extremists, from either party/side, are dangerous and bad for our country. I don't agree with extreme left wing liberals, but yet even though I consider myself to be a conservative, I don't agree with extreme right wing extremists either. In some cycles, people think the country has swung too far to the left, so we then elect a bunch of hardcore right wingers, and the country swings hard right. But then some think we have swung too far right, so we reverse course and swing hard left again. These repeated swings hard left, hard right, hard left, hard right, are not good for the country. So while I am generally conservative in my beliefs, I am not an extremist.
All that said, I find McDaniel to be a right wing extremist who is simply too far right for my comfort level. This "I'm ready to fight, I want war, I will not compromise" attitude is what is wrong with Washington today and why we have so much gridlock and nothing getting accomplished. McDaniel refuses to listen to any other view other than his own, and that's dangerous to me. No one is always right. Sometimes other people have good ideas too. Even if you don't agree, you still need to listen. Life is a give and take deal. If you want me to listen to you, you have to listen to me too.
So, even though I would much prefer that a Republican be elected, I would consider voting for a moderate Dem who will work across the aisle to accomplish something over a hard right wing extremist Repub who only wants to fight regardless of the outcome.
Run, Carlos, run.
9:22 - Please pay attention. The reason we elect people to office is exactly because they are 'great stump speakers'. We elect people for one of two reasons, or both. Either they look like us or they sound like us or both. Name me one who we've elected due to his prior accomplishments. Your time begins now.
10:07, we elected Trent Lott to the US Senate because he did a good job in the US House.
We elected Thad Cochran to the US Senate because he had done a good job in the US House.
We elected Haley Barbour because he had done a good job under Reagan and as head of the RNC.
We elected Trump because he had been a successful business man who we thought could turn around the economy.
Shall I go on ?
I'm waiting for a grinning Phil Bryant to appear on the Pelahatchie City Hall steps in about another week and announce that this is all an April Fool's joke.
10:07 Counter Challenge:
I notice you ignored 9:22's question asking what McDaniel has accomplished. That seems to be a repeated pattern with McDaniel supporters. Maybe you ignored it because there is no answer.
Ironically, another apparent McDaniel supporter above, in the first post, asked what CHS has done, proposed or accomplished to make her qualified for the job. Apparently he and she though that was a relevant question to ask of CHS, but now you, another apparent McDaniel supporter, say it's not relevant to ask the same question of McDaniel. In your own words, "please pay attention".
To the 10:07 poster, I recognize some people vote for someone just because they look like them or talk like them. But respectfully that seems a little shallow or short-sighted to me. You'll only vote for X because he's white or black like you, or you'll only vote for Y simply because he's a man or woman just like you ? Or you'll vote for Z because he sounds like you ? Saying and Doing are two very, very different things. Like most politicians, including the ones you complain of, people can say one thing but don't necessarily do it. I can tell you I'll give you a million dollars, but that doesn't mean I can actually do it. McDaniel said he was in favor of term limits, no more than two terms, but then he ran for and is in the midst of his 3rd term. As you said, please pay attention. You put yourself at risk if you just rely on what someone tells you. Personally I like to know their history, what they've accomplished in the past, and whether they have the ability to actually do what they say before I vote for them.
No one gives a damn about qualifications. If people are allowed to vote on a politician it is more like a popularity contest. People have two choices most of the time. You can choose a democrat or a republican. Doesn't matter who they are or what they are. The R or D in front of their name is all that matters. Honesty does not matter as we see several proven crooks running for office and winning. Experience doesn't matter or we would not have any politicians.
"No one gives a damn about qualifications." Wrong. I do, and I know many others who do too. Apparently you don't, and that's what's wrong with this country. You don't care if who you're voting for is qualified or not, and that's why we are where we are as a country. It's sad.
But have a good weekend.
11:25 - No, you need not 'go on'. In fact your post is nonsense, so why 'go on'? None of those men you mention was elected because of their prior accomplishments. Each of them was elected and continually returned to office because of party affiliation, name recognition, what we saw and heard them saying in ads.
As a corollary, I offer Bennie Thompson. He is continually reelected due to party affiliation, name recognition and some false sense of security with him in office - notwithstanding the fact that he has done nothing for the district in 24 years.
And we tend to re-elect everybody from city clerks to mayors to county supervisors to state representatives to senators for the exact same reason.
"Hold on now! Phil is a mighty smart man", said nobody, ever.

Chris chicken-hawk McDaniel ran from the fight with Senator Roger WICKER
to attack a woman.
I still throw up a little in my mouth every time I see this thread title:
"Gov. Phil Bryant: Cindy Hyde-Smith will make us all proud
On Wednesday, I announced....."
11:43 - You're not implying that 'a woman' is a lesser opponent in a 'fight' are you? Good. I had hoped not.
You may not have noticed, but Thad's job is the one McD wanted to begin with. He went after it this time as soon as it opened up.
"Running from Wicker"? Are you shittin' us?
