Ed funding bill dies in Senate

Speaker of the House Philip Gunn and Representative Jay Hughes issued the following statements.

Speaker Philip Gunn

“I commend the House members who voted in favor of this solid legislation at the beginning of session,” said Speaker of the House Philip Gunn. “They recognized that our children are a priority. I am very disappointed that the Senate missed the opportunity to provide our school children a better funding mechanism.

“Those senators who did not support the legislation failed to do what is best for the students,” he continued. “They let the politics of public education get in the way of our students. We can argue about the dollar amount all day long, but no one can refute that this was a better way to fund education.”

Representative Jay Hughes
HB957 was a Bill designed to Kill the MAEP School Funding Formula.

It passed the House and went to the Senate. In the Senate, it was completely amended in committee.
The Senate voted on it today, on a procedural motion.

By a vote of 27-21, HB957 was sent back to committee, which effectively killed it (since committee deadlines have passed).

Thanks are owed to all of those Senators who put our school children in front of Party.

Now we can hopefully begin to join together in addressing our real issues in public schools, instead of coming up with new formulas to pretend we are not underfunding them.

I thought 'Everything begins with education'....

Or something like that.

This failure is the product of Tate Reeves’ arrogance. Tate’s reign of terror officially ended today. This was his high watermark. This is what happens when you never count votes, which he and his arrogant staff have never done. They think they’re entitled to every GOP vote. So when it came time to convince senators or, perish the thought, give them information on which to base their vote, Tate and his minions were lost and helpless.

Nobody will fear him now. He’s a lame duck. That makes it hard to govern and harder to raise money. . They will now wait out his term. McMahan and Michel didn’t fear him when they cast their votes against him. Jim Hood may have won the governor’s race today.

What a disaster.

Tate’s head is swollen.

He’s a long time friend and I honestly don’t recognize the guy I used to know.

Power does strange things to people.

6:34 sounds like some poor lobbyist that has never been able to get issues passed with Tate. His staff counts votes all the time, what happened today, I do not know. Harder to raise money couldn't be further from the truth. The guy has more money than any LTG in history at this standpoint But nice try, go back to lobbying for whatever state agency, supervisor, or mayor is paying.

Them state leeders were tryin so hard to hep the poor students of Missippi, and sumbody done screwed it up. I am a proud Missippi pubic school grajuit. I’m gonna be suportin Kris Macdanel caus he speaks my langage.

Tate doesn't have what a takes... it's easy to see that. Jim Hood isn't any better. However, Tater tot isn't the answer.

ESA's and now MAEP. It might be time for the cabal to realize that their own folks don't like being kept in the dark and then told what to do. It needed to happen.

Tater couldn't herd his Polecats, and he blames Democrats, what a joke.

This is simply another example of Republican legislators putting their reelection chances ahead of what's best for the state. Maybe after a few years of appointed school superintendents we'll settle into a system that is looking out for the best interest of the children, and not simply building a bigger empire, and they won't be so fearsome to legislators.

Hell, Lil DicTater is blaming Dems AND the Media! What a Trumper! LMAO!!!

I left the State a few years ago and it so sad to see that the quality of leaders is so low.

We have a number of Republican Senators who are building up quite the list for their opponents' "Senator X voted with Barbara Blackmon Y Times" mailer. It's no surprise that some of the switchers vote with her all the time -- after all, they didn't have a philosophical awakening. But, we have some Senators like Walter Michel that seem to have lost their ideological compass.

So, of all the experts opining, above, not a single one has said anything about the bill or why it failed or what it needed in order to pass. Nothing but a chance to lambast this Tate guy and I wouldn't know him if I bumped into him at Hooters.

Since Michel voted against it, maybe somebody will say why.

Tate can't pass the blame on this one to someone else when people from his own party didn't vote for this. Did his staff forgot how to count?

Oh no this isn't really a big deal no schools will close. But with this crazy talk out of Washington that Trade Wars are good. Now you talking about about closing car plants and all kinds of manufacturing plants that use steel and aluminum.

It's probably a good idea to examine the school districts of the GOP senators who voted against the bill and see how they would have fared.

Regardless of the formula, the 27% cap must go. When the formula is fully funded, property rich districts get a “bonus” from the state. However, when the total appropriation is artificially capped, those property rich districts are essentially taking money away from the pooper districts. Wonder what DeSoto, Madison and Rankin would think of real equity?

Drain the swamp... draining the stock market and your retirement today...

8 Republican Senators helped kill this thing, and all we hear from Tate is that the media and democrats are to blame.

The final vote was 27-21; if Tate could actually lead his party, those 8 would have made all the difference.

9:18, Michel voted against it because Ronnie McGehee told him to. Walter doesn't do anything on education without McGehee's permission. I suspect the others were equally scared of the superintendents back home.

Anonymous said...

If Michel is afraid of McGehee -who is leaving his office and going home - then its time for Michel to go home as well. There are a lot more folks in Michel's district who care about the spending process than McGehee. Granted, Sir Walter's cohart to the north, Madame Barbara Blackmon, will be well pleased with his vote. But, although she lives in his district, she doesn't vote there. And those of us that do, we will remember who he chooses to side with.

Guess Michel is joining up with Jay Hughes campaign for Lt. Gov next year, since he chooses to partner in his fight, the one that has been his signature piece of anti-legislation.

Or maybe he looks forward to sharing with Jay in the fine seats at VH.

There were also 4 senators, all Republicans, who did not vote on the motion to recommit.

Anonymous said...

1:31 - What the hell difference does that make? A motion to recommit was as meaningless as a silent fart in a whirlwind. Past time to reconsider.

The Governor and the legislature are destroying the public school system. You have mostly uneducated school board members in Mississippi. How are they expected to be able to find and hire School Superintendents who are educated?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
