The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued the following statement.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded its 2017 Fourth of July enforcement period which began Friday, June 30, at 6 p.m. and ended Tuesday, July 4, at midnight. Throughout the period, MHP issued 5618 citations with 100 DUI arrests. A total of 183 crashes were investigated including 3 fatalities and 48 injuries on state, federal highways, and interstate systems. MHP saw a huge reduction in seatbelt citations throughout the period with 199 being issued. During the 2016 Fourth of July period 444 seatbelt citations were issued. We attribute this to responsible decisions by motorists regarding the new seatbelt law and the MHP “In the Click” safety campaign. A reduction in fatalities was also recorded this year compared to the 2016 period where 6 fatalities were recorded. All available troopers were utilized statewide during the period conducting saturation patrols and safety checkpoints.
Below is the fatality information regarding the period.
On Sunday, July 2, 2017 at approximately 11:32 p.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a fatal crash involving one vehicle in Yazoo County. A 2001 Chevrolet passenger vehicle driven by Wilbert L. Demus, 56, of Bentonia, MS was traveling Southbound on MS433. Vehicle left the roadway and collided with a utility pole. The driver was pronounced dead on scene due to injuries sustained in crash.

Grenada sure has had its share of terrible accidents in recent years.
One thing that is missing from these reports is a budget breakdown, how much additional money was spent (regardless of source, grants, etc.) over and above regular weekend/steady state operations.
I'm more interested in the MHP numbers as they've proven themselves untrustworthy with grant funds. Maybe JJ can request this data from DPS.
I'm not concerned with their budget efficiency from an armchair perspective. Take your tiki torches elsewhere. They know best how to keep the roads safe. Let them be! There's plenty of bigger fish to fry.
Speaking of 'bigger fish to fry' where was the elusive Bennie Thompson over the holiday period?
I notice all three fatal 'crashes' (they no longer call them wrecks) involved one vehicle each. I'm sure blood alcohol content tests were run as is required by state law. Three vehicles don't just leave the roadway for no apparent reason.
10:38 - keep thinking this as they continue to light your tax money on fire. DPS has proven time and time again that they are not worthy of the trust and confidence of the public. Just search this blog and you'll find plenty of examples of their inability to manage the simplest of tasks without either: 1. Stealing your tax money; or 2. Proving their incompetence.
By the way, you should probably go outside and feed your unicorn...
12:29 - just what issues do you refer to about DPS? Maybe Carol Mann being forced to live under the terms of her contract; DPS not paying her until she pays the vendors (not an uncommon contract term for most any contract - construction to consultation)? That's the only one I remember reading on "these pages" recently, and unlike you I don't take JJ as a source of news and complete accuracy, particularly the commentary.
If DPS used dollars over the holiday weekend to increase patrols on the highways, I kinda think that makes sense, unlike you evidently. If there is going to be more traffic than normal, I would hope they put more manpower on the road than normal. And that might require paying overtime - at least in my budgetary accounting I would hope that it would.
Just what is it about DPS that you feel a need to bitch when they report good news?
Prayers for these victims and their loved ones.
How many parties with truckers did the troopers hold? How many women did they solicit intercourse from to avoid the ticket?
1:06 - the title of the story is "MHP: 3 Fatalities during holiday period." This is good news to you...?
Just search for DPS on this blog and you will hear wonderful stories about how our troopers play "hide the baton" in various locations in DPS headquarters (and weigh stations), perform stripteases and have group sex while on the job, sleep with their subordinates, treat women like second class citizens, lie about how they spent grant money and fabricate documents to support their lies, screw the state out of money while screwing informants - I could go on and on and on, but I thought I'd just hit the high points.
Is that enough?
All 3 people who died were wearing their seat belts. This type of stuff is just a means to generate revenue. That's the only thing the highway patrol does. It's a joke of an organization staffed with pathetic individuals.
701, maybe I am naive, but searching a blog site for comments, accusations, stories, etc made by anonymous commenter does not quite satisfy my need for documentation of criminal or other nefarious activity. But as long as you choose to believe anything and everything you read, I hope you are constantly on the watch for all the black helicopters overhead as well.
12:24, nice try...'cept that there are court documents, DHS IG Reports to back up every statement I made.
Keep on worshiping the Highway Patrol and see how that works out for you, when not acting as a criminal enterprise they show great skill at being inept and incompetent.
