Mess in Madison?

Secretary of State Hibbit Hosemann issued the following election day update:

Mississippi Party Primary Election Day Update

It appears statewide voting is running smoothly with a lighter turnout.

There have been several issues reported by voters in Hinds County including four (4) precincts were reported not available to cast a ballot by 7:00 a.m.  There were electronic poll book issues as well.  We have also received reports in Hinds County of voters having to vote by affidavit ballot because poll workers could not locate the voter in the electronic poll books.  Hinds County Republican and Democratic Executive Committees are primarily responsible for conducting this election in Hinds County.

In Madison County, five (5) precincts have been reported as affected by an erroneous database. Voters in the Highland Colony precinct, Ridgeland Recreation Center precinct, China Grove precinct, Gluckstadt at St. Joe Catholic Church precinct, and Ridgeland 1st Methodist Church precinct are being provided ballots for the special Senate District 25 election and not all voters in those precincts are eligible to vote in Senate District 25.

·   Highland Colony Precinct:  1990 voters in Senate District 25; 1863 voters in Senate District 26
·   Ridgeland Recreation Center Precinct:  3061 voters in Senate District 25; 2445 voters in Senate District 26
·   China Grove Precinct:  2432 voters in Senate District 25; 10 voters in Senate District 26
·   Gluckstadt at St. Joe Catholic Church Precinct:  2272 voters in Senate District 25; 1779 voters in Senate District 22
·   Ridgeland 1st Methodist Church Precinct: 1337 voters in Senate District 25; 873 voters in Senate District 26.

We have received several questions as to why there are Republican candidates who have suspended their campaigns still on the ballot.  Presidential candidates were determined on December 15, 2015, as nationally recognized candidates with additions made by January 19, 2016.  Therefore, all Republican candidates were included even though they have suspended their campaigns.  Political parties could add to the ballot but not eliminate those candidates.

Madison County should have voted for Pantin. Wray is incompetent.

SOS report of four precincts in Hinds County appears to be in error as relates to the Republican primary. The office has been notified of the error, but evidently continues to report it. The Republican voting in Precinct 51 and the Cynthia precinct did not open on time; the pollworkers failed to show up and replacements were sent. The Cynthia precinct was open within an hour and the Blackburn School was open and available by 9. Any other precincts that did not open on time were, despite the report to my office - not Republican precincts as was alleged to be the case when the Secretary's office contacted me.

There were numerous problems with the electronic poll books, but they were all resolved in the normal course of business. The maintenance and programming of the electronic poll books as with all the other equipment is the responsibility of the county, not of the parties. But - this should not be a 'blame game' - the new equipment did have some problems (not unusual for what is still relatively new technology) but those problems did not keep any voter from being able to properly cast their ballot.

I voted in Madison about 9:00 at the old Pentecostal church and there were many more poll workers than voters.

"We have also received reports in Hinds County of voters having to vote by affidavit ballot because poll workers could not locate the voter in the electronic poll books. Hinds County Republican and Democratic Executive Committees are primarily responsible for conducting this election in Hinds County."

Surely the SoS knows that the county is responsible for the poll books. The parties use them during a primary, but only the county election commission can add or remove names from them.

St. Joe Gluckstadt voter here.

I was wondering how they would differentiate between voters on the west side of I-55 (district 25) and east side (22) when handing out the voter machine cards.

Guess this answers my question. They can't.

I'm sure Wray will put her twelve decades of experience to use and have this straightened out in a jiffy.

Are the primaries in Madison County run by the Circuit Clerk or the County Party Executive Committees?

Highland Colony workers should have asked "What Senate district are you in?" or "in what neighborhood do you live?". That would have eliminated a lot of the confusion created by sending people to one line and then another. Some of us KNOW which Senate district we're in, and we certainly know in what subdivision we live! Then they could have said, "You need a paper ballot; go to that line," or "You vote on the machine, go to that line."

Is a Wray-Recall possible? A week after she was crowned her husband was arrested for assaulting her. She can't handle the simplest of routine county obligations. Those who put this pea-brain in office are hiding in the bushes now.

Well that explains my dilemma. I vote at ridge land rec and was only asked for my address. I was then given a paper ballot and senate wasn't even listed. I thought maybe I was wrong so completed as is and turned in. I was not asked for ID, no one marked me off in a book and Noone even asked me to sign. I did insist on signing the book but thought maybe I was mistaken on the senate vote and actually wasn't supposed to vote. Ian's when I have man my paper ballot he just put it in the table. No security or anything. pure chaos. Whoever loses senate needs a recount.

I voted at the Ridgeland Community Center at the Reservior. They may call it the Recreation Center, but it reminded me of being in the 6th grade voting in a lunchroom. They yelled at you when you walked up and asked what street you lived on.
Then you had to tell them and everyone else. I was told I lived on the wrong side of the magic line and that I could not vote in the Senate race, although I did vote in the last one. Why did both candidates ( Billingsly and Walter Michell) send me many, many pieces of mail, send people last Saturday knocking on doors, and make numerous phone calls to my house if I was not in the district?

I was then pointed to the lady in the corner who handed me a paper ballot to vote on. There was one poll worker on each side of me, two feet from where I had to write on my ballot, and people behind me. You had to bend over and write on the table between them. What happened to privacy? I handed my paper ballot to one lady, and she turned it over and put it somewhere under the table. Who comes up with these things? Whoever in Madison County set this up needs to be on the clean up committee next time. Too much money, time and & effort is spent on these elections and they should not be run this manner.

Another Gluckstadt St Joe voter here. We are in Senate district 25. The senate race was on my ballot this morning on the computer voting machine. However, my wife voted tonight, could not be found on the voter roll, then was given a paper ballot which the poll worker crossed out the box for the senate vote. No doubt she's registered to vote properly because we voted together there the last primary and general elections.

@7:09
It sounds as though you voted in the Democratic Primary, not the Republican.

Sounds like all you Madison folk should move to Jackson. No problems here

Anonymous said...

@7:38. No. It was republican. All republican for president and then the U.S. House. It was clearly a republican ballot

The Senate race in Madison county was screwed up by Anita Wray and the election commissioners.

I was thinking about holding my nose and voting for Cruz just as a prayer someone could be Trump, but I came to my senses after seeing Feel's endorsement.

I was told that the republican poll workers at Madison first Baptist saw the Democrats having Democrat voters sign the petition for Tammy Hawkins Phillips to be on the ballot for election commissioner. That the voters voted on the machine and then came back to the table and sign the petition.

I voted in clinton @ the ymca, IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN SMOOTHER, Workers (though on the Senior Side) did a great job & seemed to appreciate my voting (Rep primary) Thank You, ( Elec poll system worked Great, they took my Driver lic & swipped it in a few seconds I was sign - ing in and voting, got may "I voted sticker" & was gone!

"IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN SMOOTHER"

I had a similar experience. Found a parking spot near the front door. A poll worker held open the door for me and I walked up to the registration table where there was no line. I was quickly given a voting machine card and walk to the voting machine where I easily cast my vote. I then got my sticker and walked out to my car. I was gone in less than five minutes.

Only one problem. I got to vote in the District 25 Senate election. However, I live in Dinsmor and that is in John Horne's district.

Otherwise, it could not have been smoother.

How can the Senate district 25 results be anywhere near final? There's confirmation of people voting for the seat who don't live in district 25 and folks who live in the district but weren't allowed to vote. Then there were a fair # of people who showed up to vote at the same place they've been voting for years to be told they weren't on the roll.

Anonymous said...

Stupid to gerrymander to the extent that you split a precinct. The county should officially make it two separate precincts with separate poll books. They could still both vote at the same place.

Anonymous said...

@10:07 Madison 1st Baptist poll workers for the republican party most definitely saw democratic poll workers obtain signatures from democratic voters who checked in and had already signed the receipt book located at the opposite end of the table. Turns out the mysterious additional signatures were on the petition for Tammy Hawkins Phillips. So these voters were approached/solicited during or after casting their ballots, which I'm pretty sure in not permitted! This was reported and hopefully will be addressed accordingly.

10:01 - that is essentially what is done. But they didn't handle it correctly. But - when the legislature redistricted it could have done so without splitting any of the precincts but they didn't do that because individual members want certain areas in their districts and don't want other areas. And the members don't worry about precinct lines.

A properly done redistricting (one done with the state and the people in mind rather than the incumbents) could be done without any split precincts. While that wouldn't eliminate all election day problems, it would certainly solve many.

Anonymous said...

6:45 - OK - So you know what Senate District you live in; do you think every voter does?

Do you trust a voter to properly say where they live? What about those that want to vote in the district but don't? You evidently believe that someone stating where they live is adequate. Naive in the utmost.

The system is designed to handle these split precincts - without a problem. In this instance, someone screwed it up and the very elementary process was not set in place.

Let me suggest you go to work in the Secretary of State's office - you evidently know about as much as they do on how to run an election.

My absentee ballot in Madison County didn't include the Senate special election.

5:48 says they 'swiped' her Driver License. WHAT? There's no magnetic information strip on a Mississippi Driver License.

Anonymous said...

6:21am

Take a look on the back of your license. There is a magnetic strip and a 2D barcode.

Anonymous said...

I'm hearing we should expect a new election for these 5 boxes on April 5th or April 12th.

Anonymous said...

6:21 - those of us that are using legal drivers licenses do have a magnetic strip on the back of them. Don't know where you got yours, but maybe somebody ought to check your bonifides (from O'Brother).

For those counties that use the latest technology, including Hinds, the voter can give a drivers license for their ID and it will - 9 times out of 10 - be able to be swiped under a scanner and immediately find the voter. Not bad - but I'm sure the Rankin County "I hate Jackson and everything about it" will find something wrong with our using technology that they can't handle.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
