Killer gets life in Rankin

Rankin-Madison District Attorney Michael Guest issued the following press release :

Rankin County Man Sentenced to Life Plus 30 Years for Murder and Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer

Madison and Rankin Counties' District Attorney Michael Guest announced today that Robert Michael Busby pled guilty to first degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and was sentenced to serve life plus 30 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

On October 5, 2015, the Rankin County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting that had occurred at 125 Carol Avenue in Florence.  When the police arrived they secured the residence and located the victim in the dining room.  An examination of the body determined she had been shot once in the head.

Law enforcement interviewed Busby's wife regarding the murder.  She explained that she was at work when the decedent contacted her letting her know that her husband was passed out on the floor due to alcohol and their children were in the house.  Busby's wife left work and when she arrived at home she saw her husband had awaken and was in the front yard where alcohol was present.

The two started to argue and the eventual victim came outside to separate the two.  Busby's wife told her children to get into her car while she went inside with her husband and the eventual victim.  Busby went into a bedroom and got a shotgun and shot the victim in the head.  His wife ran out of the house and got into her car to leave the scene for the safety of herself and children.  She drove to the Richland Police Department to report what had transpired.  Busby went inside the home where he collected his belongings and an additional gun and he then left the residence.

The Florence Police Department saw Busby's car on Highway 49 and a pursuit ensued.  As Busby was driving, he started shooting at the pursuing officers.  Busby was travelling at a high rate of speed and endangering the public as he attempted to flee from law enforcement.  Busby eventually stopped his vehicle, but would not obey law enforcement commands and reached inside his vehicle for a gun and Busby was then shot by law enforcement.  His wounds were not life threating.  However, he was transported to The University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment.

While at the hospital, Busby admitted to the crime to law enforcement confirming his wife's statement.

Guest stated, "This is a senseless murder that has resulted in the complete destruction of this family.  The victim was a loving grandmother who was killed in front of her grandchildren for trying to protect her daughter from a drunk and abusive individual.  How do you explain to these children what happened to their grandmother?  It is a conversation that should never have to be held."

Guest added, "Law enforcement did an outstanding job in bringing to justice a dangerous individual.  The cooperation between the Rankin County Sheriff's Department, Florence Police Department and Richland Police Department has allowed us to capture and to remove a killer from our streets before he could harm anyone else.  I cannot thank Sheriff Bailey and law enforcement enough for placing themselves in harm's way to protect us from the Robert Busby's of the world."
District Attorney Michael Guest was sworn into office in January 2008 and represents the Twentieth Judicial District, Madison and Rankin Counties.  For more information regarding the District Attorney's office, please visit www.daguest.com.

See it is not that hard Jackson.

You are just wasting your time talking to Jackson. People like that are just given a warning in Jackson or even less if the blame can somehow be shifted to anyone not living in Jackson.

White, republican, male, Rankin county resident says:

Law enforcement should have just killed him dead on the spot so we didn't have to waste time, money, and other resources on this thug.

No matter skin color, if LOE's would start "handling" these things like they need to, without having to deal with sorry scum of the earth defense attorneys, this world would be a better place.

Rankin-Madison District Attorney Michael Guest failed. This individual should have gotten the death penalty. I will gladly administrator the lethal injection without charge to the state.

@11:25, No one likes a criminal defense attorney until they need one.

@ 11:25 AM:

As one of the "sorry scum of the earth defense attorneys," you reference, I'd like to think the world is a better place for my being in it. At least I hope that's the case. I earnestly try.

Reading your post, I'm hopeful you're making the world a better place through word and deed. I'm also hopeful you or a loved one never need the services of a defense attorney. You see, I'd much prefer for you to persist in your holier-than-thou way of thinking than for misfortune to shatter your smug self-satisfaction.

Aside from being able to turn back time to avoid this horrible situation from the get-go, the criminal justice system functioned as it should. Other than the fact that the prosecution decided not to exact another death from this, what are you so angry about? By "handling" things are you supporting a policy of state sanctioned extra-judicial murder of criminal suspects? Defendants?

Probably the reason for the guilty plea. So he could avoid the DP.
But I agree with you.

It costs a substantial amount of money to put someone to death in the US. Look it up. I think the last one was in the range of $180,000. doctors, witness, lawyers, insurance, substance that kills the person. I think the Saudi Arabians have it right with the saber skills. 1 guy, sharp sword; 1 whack and we saved 175,000 bucks. I just want to see what a 5,000 saber looks like.

Sorry 12:31, totally agree with 11:25.

No... I'm really not sorry.

Victor Fleitas sounds like the name of a shoe salesman.

Victor, I give you credit for identifying yourself. Where I think you lost me is with this comment: "... than for misfortune to shatter your smug self-satisfaction." Misfortune? You would have us believe "misfortune" explains the predicament of most criminals? Poor choice of words in my opinion.

5:11; He's a defense attorney. It's a fine choice of words. The people he represents don't choose a life of crime in order to avoid working for a living. They are victims of circumstance and their plight is merely 'misfortune'. Don't you see?

@1:27 we're not Saudi Arabia and never will be. The only reason we put up with their crap is because of black gold.

Although, if you're just gunning for the experience, I know that they're hiring Americans for work in the oil industry.

Sadly for you, they have a special place for Americans to keep them safe. Otherwise, we might see your entitled ass on live leak.

And for you idiots arguing for all out totalitarianism in America, in my opinion, you're traitors.

Does the phrase "enemies foreign and DOMESTIC" ring a bell with you?

Let that percolate in your " I want to join the dark side" minds.

9:52, the domestic enemies have all been elected to some govt. job. They are now our leaders. Maybe we should remove the enemies domestic thing. Either that or elect honest people which is a joke.

Death penalty is only available for capital murder. Capital murder is in commission of robbery, rape, burglary, etc.. This guy killed his mother in law because he was mad at his wife.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
