City of Jackson Meeting Additional Compliance Measures Related to Lead Exceedance
In June 2015, the Mississippi State Department of Health performed the required sampling for lead and copper. In January 2016, the City was notified by the Mississippi Department of Health that elevated levels of lead exceeding the action level of 15ppb were found in some homes (13 of 58 sampled). The City distributed those results to the residents. The City initiated re-sampling of the 58 sites starting with the 13 that exceeded the action level as well as an additional 42 sites. All but 2 of the resampled 13 sites that exceeded the lead action level initially had levels that were reduced below the action level and some were no detection. As for the 2 sites, one was vacant and the other was on private well water. In the full set of 100 sites sampled in January 2016, lab results show 11 are above the lead action level.
The City of Jackson's water has not been deemed unsafe. However, out of an abundance of caution, pregnant women and small children should follow MSDH's recommendations for prevention of lead exposure from drinking water.
Exceeding the action level does not necessarily indicate a violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act; however, additional compliance measures must be met, including more frequent sampling and taking measures to mitigate the reaction of the finished water with piping, plumbing and service lines. Mitigation measures typically include implementation of flushing programs and optimizing corrosion control during the treatment process.
The City of Jackson's source water and finished drinking water leaving the plant do not contain lead. Lead enters the water from the corrosion of materials containing lead. When water is in contact with service lines and plumbing containing lead for several hours, the lead may enter drinking water. Homes built prior to 1988 are more likely to have lead pipes or solder. Public Water Systems like the City of Jackson's are required to take measures that control corrosion by treated water. The City's plants do have corrosion control systems; however, this exceedance signals an immediate need to optimize the corrosion control systems we use.
The City has continued its public education efforts. Public Education about lead and drinking can be found on the City's website, www.jacksonms.gov. As required by MSDH, the City has provided public education pamphlets to child care centers, healthcare facilities and Head Start centers served by the city's water system. PE pamphlets have also been delivered to the sites with lead exceedance.
The City will also submit an engineer-designed corrosion control study and plan for optimization of water treatment for the City of Jackson Water System to the Director of the MSDH Bureau of Public Water Supply.

Lead is killing a lot of Jacksonians but it ain't coming from the water....
Can't help but wander how long the City has known about this and kept it to themselves. If my unborn child has any illnesses related to this I will sue the dump of the City for everything it's worth. The State of Mississippi would be infinitely better off without Jackson. Is it possible to kick the entire City out of the State? Residents included.
Its a way to update the entire system--let trump make jackson great again. he will do all this for free: just like a new health care system, a free wall with mexico.
or ted cruz who's going to biometrically scan all people on a visa...
"Is it possible to kick the entire City out of the State? Residents included."
10:31 - What kind of Nazi are you!? As Jackson residents, are we to expect to be loaded on cattle cars by you? All to make the State in your view more antisceptic?
Maybe not literally kick them out. Just make the City of Jackson it's own State. Or better yet, it's own, completely separate Country. 'The Free State of Jackson."
10:22
That is funny! :)
If the residents don't kill you, the water will.
Damn! Can someone, anyone fix this shyt!?! Where is Superman?
In biblical days people drank wine because the water could actually kill. Maybe that's the answer drink Ripple.
10:31...
Your comment here is based on your lack of knowledge and understanding of the makeup of the big money families that live in NE Jackson. I myself employee nearly 85 men and women that live in jackson or in madison flowood area. Hell my neighbor in jackson has a company that employees over 200 people. Mostly middle class families in madison or rankin county. Also most developments in that area are from jackson.
11:54...
Your comment is nonsensical.
11:53
We'll get by just fine without you. If your business suddenly wasn't there, another would quickly fill the void created. Also, you act like 'big money' isn't fleeing Jackson faster than ever. Keep believing what you do, five years from now you'll find yourself all alone.
In the meantime, state agencies in the capital city are removing water coolers from the break rooms bc it "looks bad".....
Hell 11:53 #2, you and the rest of your big money neighbors need to use all of your influence to fix Jackson. Sounds like you guys and gals are the right ones to get it done. I hope you succeed.
Where is the Business Ministerial Alliance now?
@10:31 AM. You are unbelievable. The lead problem being experienced in some HOUSES is caused by the plumbing in that house being tested. When they were retested, it did not occur but in two houses. This is a huge disparity. There is a whole lot more to this story but you probably would not understand. It has to do with methods of treatment which are mandated by the EPA for places with a certain number of residents. The suburbs still mainly use chlorine which does not leach from you home's plumbing, but has the side-effect of producing harmful waste in the water.
Perhaps before you point fingers and suggest terrible solutions, you should study the problem. If you believe the sensational media hypes even part of the time, you are doomed to everlasting ignorance and opening you mouth when you should listen and read.
Feb 24th 11:38 AM
They won't hire Superman in Jackson. He banned by minority hiring laws.
One of the original sample locations that tested for lead a second time is in LeFleur East. Not good. They've got lots of sewage leaks there too.
@ 12:21
I hate to break it to you, but the City of Jackson, as well as most of her residents, are not only an embarrassment to the State, but to the Country as well. We would all be better off if we could figure out a way for Jackson and her residents to float down the Pearl and into the Gulf.
Only a small sample of houses were tested.
What about the rest of us?
Jackson is wishing lead would show up in their water system. That would make it much more likely someone else, the rest of the taxpayers in other areas, would be forced to fixing Jackson's water system.
and Jeff Good weighed in on this via Facebook... His pasta, pizza and panini are apparently lead free... SMH
Jackson should be obliterated from the map as it's a blight on the entire state. The obvious choice is for an educated electorate choose qualified and caring candidates. And that means for our so-called "qualified" legislature to pass certain bills that benefit the entire state and not just certain constituencies. The primary word is "educated".....prayers for us all.
In the meantime, state agencies in the capital city are removing water coolers from the break rooms bc it "looks bad".....
Please 12:13 - enlighten us. Tell us one state agency that has removed their water coolers for this kind of reason. I call b/s.. (1) - I don't believe there is a state agency that gives a damn about whether Jackson looks bad or not; and (2) if they did, I don't believe that they would be this thoughtful to make a connection.
10:31 Good luck surviving without Jackson.
You know what, 10:31, 2:52, and the rest of you with this "mentality", here's your solution - since you hate Jackson so much and wish for it to be obliterated, why don't you do us all a favor and never mention it again? Don't read about it, comment on it, or even mention it again. Poof, it's gone from your feeble minds.
The facts kinda ruin the Jackson-haters club. Once they get by the headline they run into problems. Granted, realize most of these folks didn't have time to actually read the presser while flipping their burgers at McD's in Pearl.
But, "the City of Jackson's source water and finished drinking water leaving the plant do not contain lead." Lead was found in trace amounts in 13 sites in Jackson. After retesting, only two of those sites had traces of lead and one of them was from a private well, not from water supplied by the City.
If there is lead in the water it probably - as noted in the release - came from the plumbing inside the site. The only other option would be from water in the city's distribution line. But basic engineering would indicate that the city's lines are probably not the source because the water has to stay in contact with the lines for a period of time in order to leach lead from the pipes. This would indicate the interior lines (unused water would sit there for long periods of time, whereas the city's distribution lines don't stay static.
2:30 hit it on the nose. When your tax base is depleted, you want to be early to the fed funds on an issue because this thing is pervasive in many cities and ultimately the issue may fizzle. Get in early and be the poster child (think detroit) so someone else's money will help rescue you.
Asking the congregation to buy your children shoes is tough, but in the end, your children may get shoes. Lets get us some new infrastructure on the fed's dime!
I hope none of you assume that you are better than Jackson residents.
11:20 and 11:36 think crime deaths are funny.
As noted by someone else, 10:36 is a Nazi-esque troll who wants to kick "Jackson residents" out of the State because we live inside the City limits
12:25 is race-baiting
And 12:55/2:52 (probably same person) says we should be "obliterated from the map" and/or "float down the river" to the Gulf.
. . . And how are you guys superior to anyone?? From this viewpoint, it looks like you are a bunch of jerks. In short, you suck. Still, you don't have much to be proud of no matter where you live in this State. Mississippi is last in virtually everything (and no, it is not because Jackson is bringing the rest of the State down - in fact, some of the State's wealthiest neighborhoods are in the City). One of the things our State lacks is quality education, which could reduce a lot of the bigotry demonstrated on here. Of course, most of you don't see anything wrong with bigotry, so that's that. So go on, be an embarrassment for Mississippi and do all you can to keep the State at the bottom - something I'm sure you're proud of.
3:18, some of these people still believe the world is flat. Don't ruin their day with facts. It makes their heads hurt.
You can almost hear the property values in that dump of a 'city' going down. I feel sorry for the ones who can't afford to leave. The stubborn ones who remain in an attempt to prove a point, I have no sympathy for you. Your family that you choose to endanger, I feel sorry for them. But not for you.
I hope none of you assume that you are better than Jackson residents.
I'm a Jackson resident and I'm fairly certain I am better than you.
Cheers.
In most areas when property get to a certain low point that is a chance to buy and get a good deal for one day the property will rise in value. This rule of investing does not work for modern Jackson. There is a very good bet that anything bought in Jackson will just continue to drop more until there is zero value.
I was born and raised in Jackson and stayed until my neighborhood got so bad that I had no choice but to leave. Jackson has many problems and is nothing like it was in my youth. I hate it and often point out the problems. When BS is being passed around someone needs to call it out. Thank you @3:18 for doing so. This is not a system wide problem. It is localized in individual houses. Hell, when I was growing up my parents taught me to let the run briefly before drinking it and to never drink or cook with water from the hot side. I still follow these procedures to this day. This is nothing new, just common sense. As bad a Jackson is in many respects, this panic over lead in the water system wide is not necessary.
Jeff Good is posting on social media that this is an overreaction and water safe to drink. He says media is retracting warning. I haven't seen the retraction. Where is Mr. Good getting this info?
3:59, Probably most folks who were around from the 50's thru as late as the 70's were taught as you were - to let the water run a minute and don't drink from the hot side.
Good plumbing at that time was often with copper pipes. But they were soldered, and the solder then had lead in it. Copper gave way to cheaper PVC and now to PEX. I don't know that we realized exactly why we were supposed to let it run a minute, but even without a reason it was just the practice.
Thanks for your comment about when BS is being passed around someone needs to call it out. Problem with that theory is that with the typical JJ comments, that 'someone' would be full time busy - either with the BS of the post or with the dozens of comments being put up by a handful of people.
The press conference is absolute clownshoes. More money for free lunches. White flight and Jackson being a "blue" city listed as contributing causes. Stamps brings up Beyonce. The smartest person there was the woman trying to explain water science to people with a JPS education. My takeaway was that the city wants more money to replace privately owned house pipes for free for the same morons that already don't pay for water and are a net negative to state and federal revenue.
@ 3:02
MDEQ removed all water coolers from break rooms almost two weeks ago
This doesn't look anything like a retraction.
Yup, all those advertisers are spending their money trying to reach only "a handful of people". ROFLMAO
When will Hillary Clinton fly in to save the children? Probably the week before the demo primary.
Oh, it's you, 5:19, who is always ROFLMAO. Yup, just you and a couple of your like minds, and the rest of us "trolls".
3:33 #2, I remain because I like it here better than any of the surrounding suburbs, problems and all. I don't have a point to prove to anybody. I know it enrages you that you left and clearly aren't thrilled that you had to because you take every single opportunity on this blog to comment about "those who remain," "property values," and "endangering your family!" Get over it. I honestly think you must be a realtor who works listings exclusively in the 'burbs. It's either that, or you're upset that you felt you had to move and must not really like where you live; otherwise, why do you remain so focused on Jackson?
It me. Jackson resident here. I used to live in Madison. Moved to Jackson. It's better.
Hate on, haters.
No doubt 5:38 the Benz dealer is advertising to me since owning one is way beyond your income level.
The realty stats for NEJackson are quite bleak.
Thas' what I drive. Your slippery slope is showing again.
Notwithstanding all of the BS in these hysterical comments, I'd like to hone in on the alleged press conference that Mayor Yarber held this afternoon. What in the hell was that dumb ass saying? Seriously, I voted for the guy because I didn't want the Detroit guys behind Lumumba running the City. The press conference was so confusing, I still don't know what they were trying to say. If the subject matter was not so serious, then I'd be ROFLOL. But, the topic is serious. Being mayor is serious. But, really. How can you take this guy seriously? While I'm at it, what in the hell was that dude wearing? I guess it's some kind of new trend-setting fashion style. Not for me. When I saw him on tv tonight, I burst out laughing. Sadly, I'm not laughing about the lead water situation (or the infrastructure, potholes, etc, that have been neglected by our city's leadership). I love my city. Not so much for my city leaders. I can't wait to vote against them ALL next year. God help us in the meantime
If Jackson actually thinks the suburbs will ever consider bailing them out they are dreaming! In the end, YOUR leadership choices dictated this outcome and you have nobody to blame but yourselves.
One of these days all our eyes will close in death and there will be no urban/suburban-ites. There will be no code words for black or white or from south of the border. Hate will not be present.
Saw that the Mayor was asking help from the state and neighboring cities/ counties. When neighboring cities/ counties police were chasing Jackson's criminals back knto Jackson, Jaxkdon did not offer to help catch the thugs. Karma. Fix the problem yourself . The state did not cause the problem, neither did Pearl, Richland, Clinton, or Madison County.
Get Kenny to fix the problem since he has an answer for everything.
Can you get Zika from the water?
Can you get Zika from the water?
February 24, 2016 at 8:32 PM
A more important question, from a Jackson standpoint, would be, "Is Zika a name for boys, or a name for girls?".
Don't worry, 8:32: around Jacktown, microcephaly won't even be NOTICED.
Village idiots voting in village idiots running the village into the ground. There's a reason Nissan, continental, Toyota, Puckett machinery(relocated), and many other businesses choose elsewhere to operate.
8:09
Depends on which way you go, after you die, as to whether or not hate will be present.
Letting the water run for a minute prior to drinking it - makes zero sense. Well, unless you have not turned on the tap in a month or so.
Nor does 'not drinking or cooking' with water from the hot side make sense. Unless you believe the hot-side pipes contain lead and the cold-side doesn't and neither have been turned on for a month or two.
It's sad that all this prejudice and racism exists in such a huge concentration. I really thought it was regulated to the backwoods areas of Lauderdale, Neshoba, Jones County etc. Racism and prejudice from any race stems from ignorance. Ignorance stems from lack of education. Lack of education in Mississippi ....you know the rest. It's not a problem regulated to Jackson or any other singular city in the state. All these problems are our chickens from the past coming home to roost. We're past that and we need to move forward. The only way to get this state out of this rut is for everyone to work together and stop pointing fingers. The easiest thing to do is pass the blame and turn your cheek but it solves and improves nothing.
After Jeff Good's irresponsible attempt at citizen journalist, I wonder if he will be installing water filtration systems at his restaurants or at the very least providing bottled water gratis to customers. We made him successful. We trusted him. Wonder what other short cuts or truth bungling he has done in the past to save face and build his business . It is the least he could do? If not, a boycott may be in order for the Good capitalist and his eating establishments.
The press conference shows the signs of the times. Unless you have pictures or video of the KKK on top of a water well somehow putting lead into the water system, then this is NOT a race issue. The city council showed that they are part of the problem of the entitlement, butt-hurt generation that takes no responsibility for the state the city is in. Whether you created the problem or inherited it from previous administrations - IT'S YOUR PROBLEM NOW!!! You make yourself, the city and the entire state look like a bunch of little b$*&%#es when you get on TV and beg for handouts.
Note that the city administration goes on TV and has a press conference saying "we have no knowledge that the city water isn't safe but we really need Beyoncé to come help us" but have not once had a press conference on crime, senseless murders, or potholes.
For 4:35, from the Oregon public health website:
https://public.health.oregon.gov/.../DrinkingWater
Can I wash my food with lead contaminated water?
If lead levels in your water are above 15 ppb, you should use water from a safe source to wash, prepare and cook your food. If lead levels are between 0 and 15 ppb, and recent water use has
occurred (for example, showering or toilet flushing), run the water for at least 30 seconds before drinking the water from the tap. If the water has been sitting in household plumbing without use
for six hours or more, let the cold tap run for two minutes or longer. It is important to use only cold water because water coming from the hot water heater may be more likely to contain lead.
Saw Mr. DeKeitha Stamps on public access channel a couple of weeks ago saying that the Governor of Michigan (a Republican he pointed out) was directly responsible for causing the deaths of 100,000 black people in Flint, Michigan because of lead issue.
Irresponsible comment by Stamps. Always easy to blame a Republican for any ill in the community anywhere. Obama has gotten away with it for years and he doesn't stop with just "Bush did it". He rarely makes utterances in public that the bad ol' Republicans are not blamed.
6:33 PM
I am with you.
I watched that nonsensical diatribe and literally asked a young black man next to me to translate.....and the guy could not understand either. Holy cow!
The young lady who spoke next on the topic of lead was very intelligent and made lots of sense...she should lead the way at all future press conferences.
So, as a mother to be who has been drinking the lead water for the entirety of my pregnancy, I'm pissed!
Sort of makes those who stole their water from Jackson look bad.
10:45 How do you even know? Odds are you have not. Have you had YOUR individual home tested?
Don't overact.
How is it possible for people who steal water to complain about it not being safe?
3:28, you must be from Jackson. In other places when people commit a crime people do not really care if they are dumb enough to steal something that is not good for them.
Being a criminal is not the most healthy of professions.
