The FBI issued the following statement yesterday:
Good Morning from Claiborne County:
Wanted to touch base with each of you this morning to keep you in the loop as much as possible.
Today,
the FBI and MBI continue to identify and locate relatives and
acquaintances of Mr. Byrd. A few of those are out of state, so we will
also be coordinating those. We will also update the family as often as
possible about what we are doing.
Again,
each piece of information you may hear about needs the context of the
entire investigation in order to glean a full understanding.
As
of now, there is no plan for a press conference today. In an effort to
make sure we aren’t missing any of his associates, we are asking those
who knew Mr. Byrd to contact the FBI’s Jackson Office at 601-948-5000.
GOOD AFTERNOON,
I AM DON ALWAY, SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE OF THE FBI IN MISSISSIPPI
I WANT TO UPDATE YOU ON WHAT WE’VE BEEN DOING TO GET ANSWERS FOR MR. BYRD’S FAMILY
OVERNIGHT,
OUR FBI FORENSICS TEAM COMPLETED PROCESSING THE SCENE WHERE DEPUTIES
AND WILDLIFE, FISHERIES, AND PARKS OFFICERS DISCOVERED MR. BYRD
THIS MORNING, THE STATE MEDICAL EXAMINER POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED THE VICTIM AS OTIS J. BYRD OF PORT GIBSON, MISSISSIPPI
THE
MEDICAL EXAMINER ALSO PERFORMED AN AUTOPSY AND WILL ISSUE A PRELIMINARY
REPORT LATER NEXT WEEK THAT WILL BE ONE PIECE OF EVIDENCE IN THE SEARCH
FOR TRUTH.
TODAY, ABOUT 30 FBI
AGENTS PARTNERED WITH MBI INVESTIGATORS IN CLAIBORNE COUNTY, LOOKING
FOR MR. BYRD’S FRIENDS AND TALKING TO HIS FAMILY MEMBERS, TRYING TO FIND
ANY PIECE OF INFORMATION WHICH MIGHT BE RELEVANT TO THIS CASE.
OUR EVIDENCE RESPONSE TEAM ALSO SEARCHED A STORAGE UNIT WHICH CONTAINED MR. BYRD’S BELONGINGS.
ALL
OF THESE EFFORTS ARE AIMED AT ONE SINGLE MISSION. PUTTING ALL THE
FACTS TOGETHER, LOOKING AT THE PHYSICAL EVIDENCE AND GAINING IMPORTANT
CONTEXT.
WE KNOW THE COMMUNITY
DESERVES ANSWERS, THE FAMILY CERTAINLY DESERVES ANSWERS, AND THAT’S WHY
THE FBI, ALONG WITH OUR PARTNERS IN MISSISSIPPI LAW ENFORCEMENT, ARE
COMMITTED TO LEARNING EVERY DETAIL WE CAN BEFORE ARRIVING AT A
CONCLUSION.
YOU’VE LIKELY HEARD RUMORS, AS I HAVE, ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED AND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE.
IT’S OUR JOB TO SEPARATE RUMOR FROM FACT, LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE , AND DETERMINE WHAT HAPPENED.
WHEN THOSE FACTS ARE DETERMINED, WE WILL BREIF THE FAMILY FIRST, AND THEN PRESENT OUR FINDINGS TO THE PUBLIC.

Another waste of time and taxpayer dollars. Where is the Justice Department investigation of the white girl burned alive in Desoto County?
Can anyone shed light on the rumors "about what happened and who is responsible" to which he is referring? Is he referring to the speculation, thus far unfounded, that this was racially motivated, or are there in fact rumors about what happened?
hey 5:33, there have been a lot more black men found hanging than white girls found burned. Both are tragedies, but given our past, I'm glad they are investigating. It will either put to rest any worries, or bring justice if there was foul play.
Correct me, but the last time the NAACP found a "lynching" in Mississippi, wasn't it the tragic death of Raynard Johnson?
Time will tell what happened to cause this man's death, but it must be remembered that he murdered a store clerk in 1980 while robbing her. Paroled or not, sympathy is exceedingly difficult for me here.
5:33 pulling the race card. How original. Of course, if it were the other way around (anyone who isn't white), he/she would foam at the mouth.
The thug should have been killed thirty years ago. Instead our tax dollars have just been going to feed his worthless ass.
@7:03 He did not kill the woman. He was in the car of the man who murdered her. His role in the 1980 raggedy was limited, hence why he was allowed parole.
The man who actually killed the woman is still in jail.
5:33 here. It is not I who played the race card, dunce. In case you missed it, Holder's Justice Department played the race card by inserting itself into a local matter, thus suggesting race may be at play here.
How many times have Jessie and Al flown into this state in the past fifteen years to suggest hanging homicides. Zero successes with that bullshit.
And it matters not how many white girls were burned alive compared to black hangings. One is enough. If you don't think race was behind her murder, you're indeed a dunce. But, as you say, she was white, so .... let's move along.
Hey dunce, who said "she was white (or any color), so let's move along?"
By contrast, it seems like that is what you're saying something similar about this case: "He was black. Bad things don't happen to black people these days. So it can't be race related (even though the method used is quite suspicious). Therefore, nothing to see here. Move along."
You, good sir, live in a fantasy world.
The fantasy world is thinking every black person killed is a racist event. The reality is he probably hung himself, and furthermore, the ones responsible for burning the white girl. Jessica, are the ones who should be hung, no matter what color or ethnicity they are.
THIRTY FBI agents have gathered......WTF? Why not send said 30 FBI agents up north and catch those animals that set that poor girl on fire?
a selfie would have been posted if it was a lynching. deceased did a good job getting some attention in his miserable demise.
What's wrong with just letting the investigation reveal what it reveals instead of condemning the investigation before it is even finished. No one is assmuming anything but you.
When you ruin your reputation and people are still alive who remember that you behaved badly, when that same sort of behavior occurs, people will suspect you.
That so many of you want to just forget about the past bad behavior and want to sweep it under the rug, doesn't help.
That Richard Barrett wasn't shunned by every Mississippian while he lived didn't help. Indeed he was filmed surrounded by young people as if he were a celebrity.
That our worst Klansmen were never remorseful hasn't helped.
That even one group of our children thought beating up Blacks and running over one was the way to entertain themselves on an evening doesn't reassure people that we've changed.
That so many of you post what you post here doesn't help. You still don't get that there's never been a successful organized targeting of white people just because they are white. That some Blacks hate whites because of the past or because of some personal disrespect or betrayal in the present is not the same.
It's hard to live down the past when so many of you are still so resentful and hostile and prejudiced.
There's every reason to believe this was suicide if reports that his hands were free are accurate, but any of you who believe that the past isn't the reason for suspicion and an outside investigation when the State power structure is still predominately white, are foolish.
You should welcome outside confirmation that this isn't a lynching if it isn't and be grateful an objective outside source will make that finding accepted.
Instead, one of you just has to say the guy deserved it...thanks DUNCE!
Nobody has claimed that the man deserved to be hung, even though he apparently thought so. But, if you really want to read a line of bullshit, here goes:
"You still don't get that there's never been a successful organized targeting of white people just because they are white."
"You still don't get that there's never been a successful organized targeting of white people just because they are white."

I could go on and on. Today, whites are targeted by blacks for violence because of their skin color far more often than whites target blacks.
Hence why I profile people.
30 FBI agents investigating this one case. This is a joke. The press & the Federal Government will put a magnifying glass on a white on black issue. This shows a prejudice toward white folks. The race card is the soapbox politicians and the press use to spew and inflame the population. I for one is sick of it.
7:09 AM, The reason they are sending 30 FBI agents is to make sure they are on top of the situation. It makes it less likely thugs like Sharpton make their way down here and turn this into another Ferguson. Because we all know they won't be protesting her murder.
7:51am says:
When you ruin your reputation and people are still alive who remember that you behaved badly, when that same sort of behavior occurs, people will suspect you.
Careful about generalizations as they can pointed right back atcha. I can understand a black person's resentment for being treated differently just due to the color of their skin. I can't understand a black person's supposed resentment due to their behavior. Overreaction to issues, especially inaccurate reactions makes people suspect you.
Also, there is a crime issue within blacks. The color of their skin doesn't make them commit crimes, but the culture, coupled with the poverty appears to justify it to some.
Therefore, when a crime is committed and someone suspects it was committed by a black person, it's not due to some embedded prejudice. It's as you stated. When that same sort of behavior occurs, people suspect them.
So, be careful when you wag that finger of generalization about the "feeling" if things have changed.
8:51 and 9:10 (probably the same person) actually believe that white people in the USA are the ones being discriminated against . . . HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You guys just keep me laughing.
By the way, its "Tennessee," and none of the examples you gave constitutes "organized targeting" in the same sense that the KKK targeted not only African-americans, but also Jews, Catholics, and just about ANY minority.
Also, what is your evidence that the Jessica Chambers murder was race-related? (who is the one race-baiting here)
I'm white. I don't have anything against white people. I'm not trying to throw stones or guilt-trip everyone. However, a large number of people in the area seem to vehemently deny the fact that racism is not over.
So many people in MS have a problem with changing the flag because "it's history." If you are going to be so protective of your "history," you need to acknowledge the negative aspects of it as well. . . something that seems to be lacking amongst the learned commenters on jacksonjambalaya.
I don't claim that racism is over. Not at all.
Black people, for the most part, hate us.
I'm still waiting on the autopsy results that Louis Farakhan paid for on Chokwe. Kenneth Stokes said Chokwe was murdered.

(1.)Yes, it is true whites are discriminated against by black in a higher proportion then whites against black. That's how Obama got elected. The color of his skin was a big factor.
By the way, its "Tennessee," and none of the examples you gave constitutes "organized targeting" in the same sense that the KKK targeted not only African-americans, but also Jews, Catholics, and just about ANY minority.
(2.) Organized targeting is the main center point and corner stone of the NAACP, Al Sharpton, Jessie James, Eric Holder to shake down quilt ridden whites like you.
Also, what is your evidence that the Jessica Chambers murder was race-related? (who is the one race-baiting here)
She was murdered by black gang members.
I'm white. I don't have anything against white people. I'm not trying to throw stones or guilt-trip everyone. However, a large number of people in the area seem to vehemently deny the fact that racism is not over.
You are proberally against everything America supports.

(5.) There is no reason to change the flag. It honors Mississippi past. 100,000 time more confederates were klled than ever was black folk lynched.I for one feel no shame for Mississippi honoring the confederates. I am appalled by black or white lynchings.
That press release reads like a Nigerian scam email.
Every segment we see on television about Ferguson and Travon is an example of blacks organizing against whites. Sadly, the drama (and call to kill) is compounded by participation from the highest levels of black elected and appointed officials.
No matter the outcome of this circus investigation, and no matter if all thirty investigators are black, the goal will have been achieved. Every time a lynching is discounted, every time a black killing is determined to be justifiable, you still have a hundred thousand blacks (and a few whites who think they're black) who discount the results and don't buy the findings.
And that, my friends, is the goal of community organizers. The seeds are planted, the damage done, the hat passed, the checks cashed.
Doesn't the family realize that if it was a hate crime, the accused now has a "get out of jail free card," as they chose to cremate the evidence (for a second opinion by the defense attorneys). Not a smart move. Take it to the Supreme Court, but pictures and prosecutor's opinionated paperwork doesn't cut it. A cheap court appointed attorney could get that thrown out in a heartbeat.
8:51 am ( OMG I hope you are also 10:58 am) Please share the name of the organization whose members have systematically killed whites. Please cite the court cases where evidence was given that the NAACP was involved in the murders either by members participating or as accessories after the fact in the murders you cited. Please list every hate organization to which law enforcement officers who have killed whites have belonged.
Please, make a list of how many juries ( OJs isn't good enough) where blacks got off because they had an F. Lee Bailey or Racehorse Haines defending them. Don't you just love the rich serial killer who accidentally confused?
Yes, there are racist Blacks, but historically their reasons to hate whites is based a helluva lot more in reality than is your racism!
I'm prejudiced as well. I absolutely hate no good, angry, hateful, ignorant, and hypocritical people who cause trouble!
6:55; You sound angry. Are you OK? Hopefully a good night's rest calmed you down a bit. Will you be going to work this morning or off to Starbucks again?
Calm The Anger, it's pretty funny that you posted at 4:11 am. I was asleep. Went to bed at 11:00 pm and just got up. I'll be stopping by Starbucks on my way to my office for a meeting.
Perhaps you'd sleep better if your conscience was clear and you didn't hate people because of the color of their skin but limited yourself to their individual behavior.
Some anger is righteous and justified in life unlike the anger born in prejudice which comes from a hate filled heart and insecurity.
It's not a surprise you couldn't come up with fact to defend the assertions in your earlier posts.
This seems like a potential plot starter for the third season of True Detective. This hanging and the limited facts that have been released have kind of an eerie feel to them.
