Sun-Herald: Will she or won't she?

Paul Hampton pondered in the Sun-Herald whether Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler will run for State Auditor against Stacey Pickering.  Mr. Hampton wrote:

A longshot potential candidate seems to be inching toward running in the Republican primary. Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler has been testing South Mississippi for support should she decide to run for state auditor.

It's  a place where the average voter probably has at best a vague recollection of her but where Auditor Stacey Pickering still has some explaining to do about his handling of the DMR affair. He ended up in hot water down here with a chancery judge holding him in contempt after the Sun Herald took him to court in a public records case.

She would be a very long shot.

What does she know about auditing/accounting?

Kingfish said...

Probably the same as Stacey Pickering, Phil Bryant, and Steve Patterson did when they assumed the office.

9:18,
So Pickering not auditing MDOC or excuse me doing a competent audit of MDOC since 2008 that would discover the biggest illegal scheme in the history of Mississippi politics would be too strong of an opponent?

Queen Mary won't be Queen if she's elected State Auditor! They will clip her wings big time. A "small" fish in a big tank!

Anonymous said...

She ought to run for Transportation Commissioner - that way, she can brick all of the bridges in the central district. We need send her and Dick Hall to the house!

Will Mary have a communications director on a no-bid contract like Stacy?

Anonymous said...

Would be a good lesson for her about just how small of a pond she rules. It would be good for entertainment value though.

10:37- an audit wouldn't have discovered kickbacks and bribes. The statutory process for awarding those contracts was followed. Unless the auditors looked at Epps' personal financial info (which is not within the scope of an audit), there's no way an audit would've disclosed any of the wrong doing at mdoc.

Typically someone tips off law enforcement in situations like this and that's how this type of fraud is discovered.

And mdoc was audited. Every year. By a CPA firm.

I hope she does run----She will put some of these dishonest political crooks in jail or at least make enough noise to expose them---if she runs that office like she does the city of Madison we will all be better off !!!

Don't forget about Queen Mary and her husband got $700,000 in the old lady saga.

When she was asked about it, she says w were building a house and it disappeared

Hey 10:37,
You have no clue how audits work do you? So a PEER report can find an irregularity but no follow up? No internal controls? No audit committee? So in your world no company ever finds a kickback scandal? Did anyone even look to see what Epps was driving? Either Epps was handling all these contracts, which is a huge violation of audit protocols or others were involved which was a huge violation of audit protocols. As for the CPA firm, please tell them to notify their carrier. A billion dollar scheme and it can't be detected? Neither could the mortgage scandal in your world? lol. Great real.

If Epps was honest, he would have demanded someone else handle some of these contracts to protect himself from accusations, and if he did not, THAT WOULD be a huge flag.

Will he or won't he? Substitute Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler with Delbert Hosemann; State Auditor with Lieutenant Governor; and Stacey Pickering with Tate Reeves. Same story, different verse. The fence straddling by both is going to cost their (potential) campaigns money. Have heard the deep pocket donors who might be willing to fund her/his campaigns (mostly his) aren't impressed with the wishy-washy routine. Sh*t or get off the pot already. Don't drag this out until February 28.

I know some developers who don't like her but not only hope she runs, but hopes she wins. A special election for a new mayor would bring all sorts of new opportunities for Madison.

She is not running for auditor. One has to be the fool of fools to print that in a newspaper.

What about the deal she cut to be an informant for the FEDS?

Can't imagine why she would want that job. Except for the fact that she loves to travel and typically does so with 'her maid' in tow. Natchez is the favorite destination for the traveling duo but one can suppose she wants to see the state.

Hell, she can't even corral and expose the shenanigans of the bunch of courthouse outlaws in her own county.

@ 10:37, yes.

Her only true experience is meddling in other's business. She's made a career of this in Madison. I'm thinking about voting for her, just so we can get a new Mayor! She's terrible-always trying to tell everyone how to do their jobs!

Rumor at Kroger Deli has it that J. Bell Crosby is eyeing the State Auditor position. Don'tchu laugh now. Lookit the last five people to hold the job.

Someone should run against Pickering. Then maybe they will audit those Chancery Clerks.

I would vote for anybody from any political party instead of Stacy Pickering. What he allowed to happen in the MsDMR matter is enough for voters throughout the state send him packing. While he runs around the state holding press conferences to announce the demand/prosecution from every clerk, bookkeeper and school secretary that has crossed the line he forgave $1,074,519.97 that the Ms.Dept.of Marine Resources Foundation misused.Instead of pursuing Bill Walker and the other members of this criminal enterprise he accepted two 30 year old boats and let the "dear friends" walk with nothing out of pocket in this specific matter.Bill Walker was eventually sent to prison but the other directors of this CONprofit never paid one penny.Walker is also required to pay restitution over a long period of time but was allowed to keep all personal assets. Why? Because he had an R behind is name? Because he was connected to certain politicians in Jackson? Stacey Pickering should answer these questions on his way to getting his due which is an exile from political office.

Stacy Pickering was held in contempt by a Judge on the Coast during the DMR scandal for not producing and running off with key documents. Why would anyone want to re-elect him?

Anonymous said...

Mayor Mary has the City of Madison as proof of her success. But there is much left to accomplish and many developers and county politicians to fight. Hope she stays.

Anonymous said...

All Pickering has to do to assure getting his a-- kicked is not finish cleaning up the DMR mess he helped create by providing zero oversight. He knows many more wrong doers in this matter and will be harassed all the way to election day.He really has no business running for re-election in my opinion.

Candidate Watch said...

JBC won't run. He can't fit in one of those State-owned Prius vehicles.

Mayor Mary should run against Lynn Fitch. Would make for an interesting cat fight.

Some say Mary picked up qualifying papers at the SOS office yesterday.

Who is the Hottest Reporter in Jackson?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
