The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency issued the following statement.
This morning, September 19, 2022, at 9:04 a.m. on-site safety personnel were notified of an alarm at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant. Officials identified a chlorine leak in the chemical building. All personnel were evacuated immediately from the chemical building. That building is designed to have air scrubbers to keep chlorine from leaving the structure and reportedly worked as designed. Ridgeland Fire Department, Jackson Fire Department Hazmat Team and O.B. Curtis maintenance staff identified three leaking valves and secured the area. No other evacuations of surrounding areas were necessary.
“The chemical building at O.B. Curtis is an area where increased focused needs to occur to abate additional safety hazards. We continually work to improve the safety of this facility. While this was a chlorine leak, the Mississippi State Department of Health engineers monitored the water disinfection during the leak; the disinfection process was uninterrupted, water being distributed to the public is still safe for consumption as long as you follow MSDH precautions,” says Jim Craig, MSDH Incident Commander.
No injuries occurred and fire officials gave the all-clear at 11:08 a.m.

Got to snuggly tighten those connections and fittings guys. That sneaky chlorene stuff will slip through any little gap i can find.
To quote Gomer Pyle “SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!!
O. B. Curtis- the gift that keeps on giving.
Chowke will blame these chlorine leaks on last nights flooding and freezing temperatures, in addition to gun shows and open carry, right?
How many times has this happened in the past without adults on site to report it?
Someone inform Brian grizzel and Roland Martin.
It's been 3 weeks with the "experts" on site, problems still happening. A chlorine leak? That can kill people, quickly. Where are these experts from again?
I wouldn't drink from the tap yet.
Attn 2:14 It is okay to drink from the tap. Just don’t do it near Jackson.
My neighborhood in Ridgeland off of Williams abuts right up to the OBC plant. Wonder if they need to supply us with Chlorine CI2 meters and SCBA.
@2:21 PM,
Rather than requesting SCBA you should request SCUBA. That way you could go in the Rez and clear the intakes to OBC.
So no progress from Lumumba for years was ok, but slow real progress from experts is unacceptable?
Got it, Pitt.
How long until the Curtis family asks for their name to be removed from this facility?
Geez, folks. Get a grip.
The US uses 26 BILLION gallons of Chlorine every year. Trains of tanker cars of it go by you every day, almost always without incident. You don't even notice. The most essential chemical, used for our water, plastics, pharmaceuticals, etc etc.
It has been there for 25 years at this plant, and you've never heard of it until now. Why?
Because for 25 years, the City of Jackson has been operated by fools and incompetents, ignoring the EPA and OSHA.,,
Now, when competent folks give you a pretty routine notice, you panic. Calm down.
More folks die from gasoline than chlorine, but you ride around on top of 25 or more gallons of that for hours every day. Do you need to wear Nomex and carry air tanks? Of course not. Stop being fools.
Lumumba your a complete moron. NE Jackson resident here. Tate please have the state take over all things in Jackson. Police water fire 911 dispatch roads city parks and recreation… I mean all faucets
Lumumba your a complete moron
You’re not really one to talk.
5:43 - you beat me to it.
Well done.
Is anyone ever going to repair the hole in the roof of the building at The Rez intake? Maybe that is not a big deal, but I would imagine rain would not be good for whatever is in there.
9:12 Yeah, might contaminate the rust or mold in there.
5:43 and 8:44, are you two of the mayor’s cronies? Hey, it’s evident that this administration and the previous administrations after Kane Ditto let the city run down. You just don’t want to admit it or either you choose to use the race card.
@5:48 AM
5:43PM here
Take your meds. I was mocking your asinine, incoherent comment. I wasn’t defending Lumumba.

Actually the benign neglect began when Danks left office in '89.
It should be noted that once the feds and state fix many of Jackson's problems, Lying Chowke will be moving on to a national political office while taking credit for fixing Jackson.
An uncontrolled chlorine leak could kill everyone in the adjacent subdivision. One whiff will burn up your lungs.
"Actually the benign neglect began when Danks left office in '89."
You're so right 5:48 AM.
Even at the end of his term, Dale Danks was standing up against his new radical opposition
... led by a young Credell Calhoun.
But Danks lost and Ditto won.
Then, Ditto was like a lil' puppy.
( wallowing around on his back, waiting for Credell or one his "pastors" to rub his belly )
To quote the late Paul Harvey, after Ditto ... you know the rest of the story.
