Mayor Discusses Water Problems

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba is holding a press conference at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant right now.  It is streamed below.

A chorus of the Mayor, City Engineer Robert Lee, and Cornerstone Engineering representatives all said the same thing: Jackson had to take the soda ash system off line and use a lime slurry system to treat the water.  The lime slurry created calcium carbonate that made it appear the water had unacceptable levels of turbidity even though it was still safe to drink.

Mayor Lumumba said the winters were colder and summers warmer due to climate change.  The city was weatherizing the membranes at O.B. Curtis water plant.  The city was spending $53 million  on improvements to the water treatment plants.

It'll be a whole lot of nothing...again

If Chockwe asks for state dollars to fix jackson's water problems, then the state should take over jackson's water system.

Anonymous said...

To avoid vomiting, I won't click on the link. Being that only BS comes out of his mouth that is an appropriate venue to hold the presser.

Blah blah blah sos. Let the State or Feds take over Jackson as the Mayor continues to Perform his required duties!

"well let's be clear"

plus a new stengalism i missed!

He’s just putting raw boo boo into the drinking water straight from the source, his mouth.

Anonymous said...

A terminal case of Diarrhea of the Mouth. No cure for it, Jacksonians. Chuck Way is out of his league.

The most shocking part of Jackson is how content it’s citizens are. Where are the protests, going to the media demanding better governance, confronting the officials? Most of the people upset about the state of Jackson don’t live in Jackson and those that do are too quiet.

Anonymous said...

I'm beginning to think that Shock-way's supporters ENJOY living in misery.

"... hotter summers, colder winters and more rain ..."

Sorry Chumpway, none of that bullshit is supported by official NWS weather data collected at JAN.

I believe it would be cheaper for the State to move the Capitol and state agencies to Madison or Rankin Counties. Jackson is already a money pit that is getting deeper every day. Yes move would be expensive upfront but cheaper for all the citizens of Mississippi. I do not live in Jackson but my tax dollars already go there and doesn’t benefit where I live. The capital was moved once in the past so it’s not unheard of. The average government building downtown is well over 50 years old so the upkeep is expensive. Just creat a capital city for the capital and all the agencies.

Was it me or did anyone else detect a hint of shaking in Chock-away's voice? Y'all this fool is pointing the finger of blame toward everyone but himself & his inept administration.

If it weren't comical it'd be sad. You got what you voted for.

Are his failures now b/c of alleged climate change? Does he even consider for one moment that he leads a city that dumps millions of gallons of raw sewage into a waterway that provides our drinking water? Is he tryin to harm us on purpose?

It's white flight, no it's Trump, no it's the gun show, no it's "open carry," no it is the legislature, no...wait for it....it's CLIMATE CHANGE.

Has Prince Chowke returned to his new home in Atlanta yet?

What a dope!

What a prime time example of a looney toon buffoon!

Anonymous said...

Wonder where he received his Masters in Jive Talk?
The mayor is such a professional at speaking yet, saying nothing!

Anonymous said...

Dumping doody in the river is the radical thing to do. Jackson just needs to dump a bunch of tilapia fish in the Pearl along with the doo doo and all will be good. If anyones says anything just tell them their racist.

Anonymous said...

The water is safe. The city is safe. Roads & streets are safe. Got it.

Anonymous said...

Jackistanians don’t protest or complain about Lufumble because he doesn’t make them pay their water bills. Their loyalty to Hizonor is bought and paid for. What a joke and stain the entire circus is on the great State of Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

This sophmoric fool isn't just in over his head; he is at the bottom of the ocean, and the city council members sit around and either wring their hands or clutch their pearls.

Everybody’s on to him and he knows it. He deserves every bit of karma coming his way.

The soon to be Gelding holds forth.

The marxist mayor is the embodiment of fear in his desperate attempt to avoid being made a eunuch by the Council, Richard's, the State Court and the EPA.

Jackson MS is the butt of the nation. That's nothing new. What is fairly new is the state of political leadership available today. Everybody here says Jackson's residents must be happy since they elected this bozo. No. Nobody who could be called qualified wanted the job. This guy can at least put two sentences together. It's pitiful... but even worse is our national situation. Look at what's been running our country. Jackson is just the butt.

Anonymous said...

You can tell he’s butt hurt when he starts making up big words like “misillusion.”

Anonymous said...

Fair point 5:03.
But what people also have to realize is that the most qualified, educated business man could run for mayor in Jackson and lose based on skin color.

So true enough, nobody wants the job.
But don't kid yourself into thinking qualifications matter.

Jackson citizens would rather drown in the boat with a black captain, than accept a ride from a life boat led by a cracker.

And this is what happens when skin color is the basis of leadership.

Anonymous said...

The perfect storm - Chowke as mayor and Tater Tot as guv.

Anonymous said...

This kid only got the gig because of the color of his skin and who his daddy is. He’s not competent enough to run a glass of water, let alone a large city.

Anonymous said...

Bumble say just a perception of raw boo-boo moving throughout the shitty, move along.

Anonymous said...

5:12 is 100% spot on and it’s a travesty

Anonymous said...

So, lets see - last week the problem was that they had to take the soda ash tanks off line, you know -- they aren't just small barrels, they are big big tanks. Right? And they have had to be removed while they construct the building.

Now, this week - well, no. They didn't move those tanks. Those big big tanks. They are still there. Its now another problem with the soda ash - its clumping due to the humidity.

Hell, what happened last summer -- the humidity was pretty damn high then. What about the year before? Again, the humidity was high then as well, just like it is EVERY summer in Mississippi. Right? Why is it all of a sudden this year that the humidity has caused a problem with the soda ash?

Just like those many years prior to 2015 when the city used lime to treat the water. If lime causes high turbidity and we ought not be concerned about it (even though despite Hizzoner's claim, the health department says we should be concerned aobut drinking these turds), why didn't we have high turbidity every summer prior to 2015 throughout the summer? Right?

His stories fail the eye test. Nothing but excuse after excuse, and when he gets caught in a lie, another excuse to take its place.

Wrong.

Anonymous said...

Deputy Feel and the rest of the unindicted TANF crew are probably thankful for this useful distraction.

Anonymous said...

Still not an honest answer of why the city hired a law firm from Birmingham & paid them 30% of the settlement with Siemens. The mayor is quite cavalier when discussing the matter that this is just normal business. I believe he could have negotiated a much lower fee.

Anonymous said...

@6:39 PM - yes, a lower fee was possible from many firms, but that would have negated any "finder's fee." Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Anonymous said...

You can't lose control over something you were never in control of in the first place . Privatize the water system or have a competent state entity take it over

I’m having a hard time understanding why you believe the State is responsible for the City’s failures. You must already rely on the Government for your meals and healthcare.

" '... hotter summers, colder winters and more rain ...'

Lumumba knows these claims are all lies. He also knows these lies are supported by the Harvard narrative and his NYC financial supporters.

Anonymous said...

I'm no Tater fan but comparing Tater to Baby Chok is just goofy. Tater is arrogant but he is a really smart guy. Chokwe is arrogant and not real bright. An ethical and competent press corps would destroy Lumumba.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone even address the issue of the city letting raw sewage run into the creeks and the Pearl river for months on end? I can’t even imagine bathing or washing clothes with Jackson water. Does the mayor, members of his administration, or members of city council get their water supply from another source other than the city? It’s one thing to not give a damn about the citizens, but they apparently don’t even give a damn about their own household!

Anonymous said...

No way one can defend Chokwe but saying that tater is smart is a stretch. A monkey could read like he does from scripts . Less we forget that he was a bank teller prior to be anointed by the Governor. He also was dumb enough to fire Piggot because of his allegiance to contributors. smart? I don’t think so.

Our winters are not colder. Name the last time there was ice on the main lake of the reservoir? Early-mid 90’s best I remember. It doesn’t happen any more. He can shove that boo boo somewhere else. He’s lying and it can be proven, yet no one publicly calls him out on it.

Kingfish said...

This past winter was milder than the year before. 2020 winter was not that bad either.

Summer? When is the last time we hit 100 degrees? I can remember back in the 90s we hit 100 several days in a row. Go up river and the damn water was warm when you jumped in. We haven't been over 95 degrees that many times this summer compared to years past.

Anonymous said...

I don’t care about the water. But the mayor’s beard looks bad. And the short guy engineer needs a hair cut about as bad as anyone I have seen.

Anonymous said...

" Was it me or did anyone else detect a hint of shaking in Chock-away's voice "?

I didn't notice any shaking in his voice.

But I did notice some of his mannerisms ... that came across as a very frustrated and annoyed man.

(Especially when he was answering questions from the media).

The progressives can't have it both ways; either there is "global warming" and thus warmer winters, or there isn't "global warming" and the winters are cold.

What a losing administration Jackson has. Unfortunately I live here but won’t be for a year at the most. How sad and deplorable. There is no leadership or “administration”here at all.

Please tell me how you would have solved the water problem starting the day this mayor took office.
Please tell me how you would come up with the matching funds to get the needed funds.
These personal attacks don't impress me.
And Burton 39110, you need a math lesson and history lesson. You can't move the historic buildings. Even if you could, the costs would be prohibitive. And, you should really pay more attention to your own water. The aquifers in Mississippi have been badly contaminated for decades. The wells are contaminated. A dump 30 miles from my grandmother's house contaminated her well with PBB's from illegal dumping which has been common in Mississippi.
Those in your zipcode with filtered water see what's in their filters.
Most of you writing ought to get your water independently tested.

Why isn't there a glass of that good Jackson water on the podium while he speaks?

Anonymous said...

Would a Cholera outbreak do him in?

The twitter threads with hundreds of posts absolutely roasting Tate and not even mentioning Chuckles is all I need to see to know this will never get better.

The entitled attitudes that literally demand the state to rescue these morons from the shit show they created and the refusal to accept any blame is a microcosm of the ruin of society.

It does amuse me how little effect the racist dog whistle claims have.

Its just pathetic at this point. Nobody (outside of Liberal MSM) even cares enough to engage the fight because it is just factually NOT rooted in racism.

Anonymous said...

I'm not Burton but 8:15, I'd start by billing for water service so I can properly fund the maintenance.

I'm not a Mensa grad and I did not actively seek the position of leadership (which also would lay the responsibility of BILLING AND MAINTAINING THE JAXN WATER SYSTEM on MY shoulders) as Chuck did...but that is a healthy start from an absolute lay person.

Tell your hero Chuck to give that a shot, and see how the little it would take for voters to applaud him for making ANY effort at all to right the ship. Some folks wanted to support him.

He just gave them absolutely nothing, and do mean nothing, to support.

Anonymous said...

Like some posters have suggested, the mayor's critique of this issue would hold more "water if he'd drink of glass of Jackson's liquid while he was talking.

Anonymous said...

Considering the money spent and squandered Lumumba could have hired an army of people to manually bill for utilities by hand with paper and still produced a positive net for the system and treasury.

Kingfish said...

8:15: Hmmm... I'll take a stab at it.

1. First thing, end the moratoriums. The deficits got really out of control when the cutoffs were cut off. You can make a case there was almost not a garbage collection deficit when there were no moratoriums. When they were in place, the deficit for sanitation rose above $2 million.

2. Clean house in billing and I mean really clean house.

3. Use different lawyers for Siemens. There are good environmental lawyers in Jackson the city could have used that would not have charged $30 million (1/3 of the fee) to represent Jackson. John Brunini is good (and Butler Snow deals with the city already). Keith Turner is excellent. Milner is good. There are others.

4. Hired a real expert to come in, audit, and evaluate the water system.

5. Place all options on the table, including hiring a private contractor to run the system. Private companies operate water municipal water systems all over the country. What is available? (Operate, not buy.).

6. More transparency. The city hid the EPA order for over a year than lied more about it when it was discovered. The Mayor said the media and public were ill informed when he is the one who hid the information in the first place. Word on the street is Miller wanted to hold a presser over the EPA order but the powers that be said no way. Then there was the matter of the electrical panel. Nuff said.

7. Hire better, experienced lobbyists, probably Republican-oriented lobbyists to get state help, as the Mayor's father did. Thompsons, CRG, Clay, Worth Thomas. Can anyone say the Mayor's lobbying efforts have been successful?

8. Take the EPA order seriously. When that EPA order was issued, the city was lacking the proper instrument techs at the water plants, which caused many of the problems to develop in the first place. Um, after a couple of years, it might be a good idea to say hmm.... something isn't working. Let's go to the Council and raise the pay and do what it takes to get more qualified people. That means probably paying above market rate. Oh well. For years the VA paid nurses well above market rate because it was a crap job. ;-)

I mean, right now, the PW Director has no PW experience. He is an unlicensed architect. He wears the suit, says the right buzz words, and is quite proud of himself. He also has no business running a public works department of a major city. The city has one engineer and he is a road guy.

9. Get rid of the DBE requirements or curtail them. If a minority company wants to get the entire project, fine with me. But all this pass through crap where someone with little or no expertise gets his beak wet because of his skin color or connections has to stop. It would not be surprising to learn Richard's submitted a cheaper bid because it didn't have to deal with DBE requirements.

Water had nothing to do with Detroit going bankrupt and the Mayor knows it.

Anonymous said...

Just now a low pressure alert has been issued…..

Anonymous said...

Ironic, really, that he leaned on a Detroit analogy at all. Tone deaf.

Anonymous said...

The mayor.....

Ooops!

Anonymous said...

The current low pressure issue was caused by Chowke blowing hot air during yesterday's presser, thus damaging the sensitive equipment, combined with his diarrhea of the mouth overloading the system, right?

Anonymous said...

The fragile equipment broke again. Doesn't everyone know that the expected operational life of a water treatment plant is only 10 years?

Anonymous said...

I haven’t heard if the fire dept is “distributing potable water”. Did it catch up to them That we knew they were getting the water out of the fire hydrants…the same water line feeds the hydrants and just how would a fireman boil enough water to let you “bring your own Container to fill with potable water?” We don’t have short memories and we aren’t stupid. The whole damn Administration is no good.

No safe water to use. If you can’t drink or cook with it then why the hell would you bathe in it?
Sewers are no good
Can’t drive alone or at night
Handing out “potable water that ain’t potable”
Streets are destroyed
Crime is rampant
Junkyards litter the town
A tire dump has been located on East McDowell road That projects into the street
911 doesn’t work
Soon to be 5 boil water notices
Oh yeah…the garbage fiasco. When will RD stop picking up trash for non payment on an illegal contract?

I keep asking myself why does the area that “carries the majority tax burden” of Jackson put up with this? Eastover can drill their own wells and service their area and Never even feel That drop in the bucket! But they shouldn’t have to! But it looks as if they will need to.
Byram is going to bring litigation against Jackson ans so should Georgetown, Monticello, Columbia AND the Cities in Louisiana that obtain their drinking water feom the Pearl River.

Several years ago a businessman on highway 80 in Flowood was sent to prison for asking his employees to dump cleaning chemicals into a slough behind the business. Whats the difference? Has anyone noticed the solid waste ump trucks hauling out of ehe Savanah Street Waste Water Facility?

Did anyone else hear that Jackson can’t pay their bills to obtain Chlorine for treatment?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
