Y'all Politics and UMMC are apparently going to have a little public records fight. YP posted today:
Earlier this month, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi (BCBS) subpoenaed multiple individual officials at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) over their communications specifically with two Mississippi news outlets in the current defamation lawsuit BCBS filed against the medical center’s leadership.
BCBS claims that employees of UMMC engaged in a defamatory public relations campaign against the company.
The BCBS subpoena seeks the correspondence between UMMC and media outlets, specifically naming Mississippi Today, their reporter Kate Royals, and SuperTalk Mississippi.
In the interest of public disclosure in this matter, Y’all Politics filed a public records request with UMMC on Tuesday seeking the same information listed in the BCBS subpoena. Doing so ensures that even if a settlement of the lawsuit is reached between the two parties, the public has the opportunity to view that information in full. Article.
It's been awhile since we had a good ole media fight. Stay Tuned.

Cat fight!
More like the Clash of The Titans. Go UMMC, as the insurance companies need to lose their antitrust exemptions.
I am really curious to see what comes out of this considering those on the editorial staff at the Mississippi Today who go around town bragging about their access to Lou Ann Woodward for chats during the pandemic. Too busy getting hoodwinked and schmoozed by UMMC to use their investigative journalism resources to bring some real accountability into the disaster that is leadership at UMMC. Surely MT and UMMC weren’t stupid enough to show this bias via written public communication.
How about asking simple questions like—why does everyone who works in healthcare in Mississippi know that UMMC is notorious among payors for being a complete disaster when it comes to their billing and dropping incorrect charges? Or how about noticing that literally every single executive leader comes from the same clinical area? Are any other major health systems governed this way? No. Or how about all of their massive turnover in their revenue cycle and payor contracting leadership? Simple questions that MT and others are not asking.
This is just as much UMMC’s inability to file a correct claim to insurance and their incompetence as it is BCBS.
Blue Cross can’t even get the venue right.
I do not care who wins.
I want to know the truth. Are they both greedy? Did one party play unfair? How poor is UMMC and BCBS's leadership?
The public needs to know.
Go Y'all Politics.
UMMC is eventually going to be exposed for everything wrong about their arrogant, self-important management.... the only same-old gripe everyone seems to have about BCBS is that they're the "big bad insurance carrier" so they must be guilty. Not this time. There is far more to come from physicians who despised working at UMMC. Bank on it.
UMMC is out of their league and is about to get steamrolled. They will regret the scorched earth tactics used against BCBS. And I’m not at all pro BCBS, but this will not end well for UMMC.
Still waiting to see Mississippi Today or the Mississippi Free Press report on the massive environmental disaster ongoing in the Pearl River as Jackson continues to dump million of gallons of untreated raw sewage into the river.
Could UMMC be trying to rip off Blue Cross? A follow up visit at UMMC is $200.00 other specialist I go to is less than $100.00!
Y’all is bought and paid for by a handful of GOP officials. It’s painfully obvious when you read their articles. They’re doing this because they were told to.
I don't really like either one of them, but Yall Politics is going to take the side of whoever they are told to. Its a very one-sided website.
Y’all is bought and paid for by a handful of GOP officials.
Which ones? Can you actually name them? Painfully obvious like MT owned by Democrats is painfully obvious?
Price gouging the insured is how they pay for all of the undocumented patients. UMMC have delivered tens of thousands of anchor babies and the undocumented parents never paid a dime.
UMMC is well known among illegals from as far away as the chicken processing plants in Scott, Newton, and Leake counties. They often have serious complications due to traveling long distances while pregnant. Their babies often require long stays and expensive care. They show no income and give whatever name they want. And they never pay a single penny or peso for top notch care in an air conditioned hospital, without swarms of flies and rodents.
Luxuries they could only dream of back in the old country. UMMC is literally better than the hospitals that only the elites could afford in their nation of origin.
Keep in mind that the real battle here behind the scenes is between UMMC and the State of MS - this is a hospital system that relies on public funding. Ask why a state teaching hospital has to look to a private insurance carrier to make its budget? No wonder that BCBS is telling them to pound sand. It's easy to be critical of the UMMC leadership but they are puppets of the IHL which is making all the critical management decisions - like the BCBS smear campaign. It's also no wonder that physicians have left UMMC in droves - tired of dealing with the endless bureaucracy. And now the patients are leaving...
It's also no wonder that physicians have left UMMC in droves ...
FACT.
UMMC, the hospital that shit on it's own nurses by lowering pay and cutting positions during the pandemic but brought in travel nurses and paid them much more than the nurses who still had jobs there. Yeah, screw UMMC. Lou Ann, Dan Jones, and the others who got it to where it is today. UMC of old wasn't the UMMC that it is today. A lot of the downfall happened after the changed the name from UMC to UMMC and upper management changed.
BCBS is no saint either, but I think they are on the right side of this fight.
Kudos to Kingfish for kicking this off. We'd never be on the path to exposing this latest sorry mess at UMC without your dogged investigative efforts.

I'm waiting to hear from the female Anestheiologist/Critical Care MD who had previously been at UMC many years ago, may be retired from private practice by now. She wrote a fine, detailed essay as to the corruption and incompetence at UMC. Also, why is UMC allowed to build primary care and specialty clinics at Grants Ferry, Highland Colony Parkway, etc with taxpayer money and UMC by law cannot be sued for malpractice as opposed to private practice physicians???
The malignant and disjointed atmosphere along with the incompetent leadership is only one of many facets as to the bottom-ranking of UMC.
Oh, and then the smear campaign against BCBS, even on Instagram and billboards on Lakeland Drive. We are paying for this. Ridiculous.
There are no angels here, but UMC takes the cake when whining for more money and trying to screw the private practice physician community. Meh.
How long did that cardiac screening center at Grant's Ferry stay open? They made a big deal out of it in December and by January it was closed.
ER Docs thrive best in chaos.
That sums up the C-Suite at UMMC.
2:20 hit the nail on the head.
Every. Single.Person. in the vice chancellor’s office came from the Emergency Medicine Department. it’s sick. i’ve never seen another health system governed by the same clinical area.
Then when you look at how many department administrators are the husband of so and so in the Vice Chancellor’s office it gets worse.
It points to nepotism and terrible governance.
Maybe the Mississippi Today can stop hanging out on porches and actually start doing some real investigating.
I was unable to find the essay on UMC retired doctor mentioned in one of the comments above. Anyone who can provide the location would be a help. INTERESTED
This isn't about medicine, medical care, doctors, or anyone else. It's about hospitals and health insurance. The latter has nothing whatsoever to do with the former. It is like trying to connect a stadium bond issue with the odds of the team that will play there for however long going to the Super Bowl. IOW, it's about who can get more money from more sources - the firstest can grab the the mostest.
9:44am, EXACTLY! It’s on the same level.
