Former DHS Communications Director Danny Blanton pleaded guilty to felony DUI in Madison County Circuit Court yesterday. It is his fourth DUI conviction.
The indictment states he was arrested on July 10, 2021 for a DUI. He was convicted of DUIs in June 2021, May 2014, and July 2004. He previously served as the Public Relations Director at Ole Miss but resigned the position in November 2015. He is 58 years old.
Blanton faces a prison sentence of two to ten years and a fine of $3,000 to $10,000. The District Attorney made no sentencing recommendation.
Blanton will be sentenced in two weeks. Circuit Judge Steve Ratcliff presided over the case.

Consider the 100s of times that he has driven drunk but not caught, and all of the times that he was likely intoxicated at work.
We will never know how many accidents that he caused and drove off.
He will get more time for this in Madison County than someone gets for murder in Hinds County.
May, June, & July aren't good months for the former Hobby Lobby man. It's a wonder he hasn't hurt or killed anyone by now.
Just out driving-
We need a three strikes law. He should spend the rest of his days behind bars for four felony convictions.
Who really knows how many times he drives drunk. He could kill someone's mother, sister, child, brother, father, grandfather...
The years of heavy drinking sure took a toll. He looks 75
Drunk drivers should be executed after the 3rd strike. I say this as someone who has two relatives who are multiple DUI offenders. The liquor killed one of them by age 50. And the other one doesn’t give a shit about anything except for having sex and getting drunk. She is 40.
Judge give him 10 years. This will dry him out!
Once upon a time, we could involuntarily commit addicts at least until they were sober for the time it takes for the physical addiction to end.
If you can't do that, there's zero chance you'll stop the habitual behavior unless the family can managed 24/7 supervision until new habits are formed.
If the first 2 don't scare you into using Uber and being a responsible adult, you should be removed from society.
This man is as dangerous, if not more so, than the morons shooting up Jackson.
What a waste of oxygen.
public relations director at ole miss....hey.......... he's one of the beautiful people of the SEC
"The District Attorney made no sentencing recommendation." I see a softer sentence coming his way.
I understood the three strikes statute to require 3 duis within a 5 year period for it to be considered a felony and subject to mandatory jail time. What changed?
In this case there are minimum sentences.
@9:59 AM - Agreed! Plus, 270 pounds!
@10:03 AM Only in a perfect world. MS prisons are like 7-11s. Want some booze? Dope? Cellphone? Sex? No problem.
WE MAY NOT WIN EVERY GAME.....BUT WE AIN'T NEVER LOST A PARTY.
Just lost spouses, children, jobs, and your future. The thousand year saga of booze in excess. Sad.
I talked to an inmate at Parchman over twenty years ago. He was mopping the floor in the administration building. He was doing five years on his third DUI.
WE need more of this kind of sentencing
Someone mentioned 3 or 4 felony convictions. I don't see any of the priors being felonies and guess this one is only because it's No.4.
You can wrap this one in Red and Blue!
Sounds like he needs a better attorney
Just look at what alcohol does to a person. As stated above he looks 75. Alcohol is just highly calibrated poison. No doubt those around him have suffered due to his drinking. He’s a liquid junkie. His bad judgement is extreme, social drinkers bad judgement is hidden better but rest assured it has negatively affected their lives and those around them. Put him in the pokey.
Just put him in a solitary confinement with full cases of cheap rotgut liquor. Let him drink himself to death. The problem will take care of itself.
"I understood the three strikes statute to require 3 duis within a 5 year period for it to be considered a felony and subject to mandatory jail time. What changed?"
Several years ago this was changed in legislature due to people receiving multiple DUI's just over time limits.
(8) Charging of subsequent offenses.
(a) For the purposes of determining how to impose the sentence for a second, third, fourth or subsequent conviction under this section, the affidavit or indictment shall not be required to enumerate previous convictions. It shall only be necessary that the affidavit or indictment states the number of times that the defendant has been convicted and sentenced within the past five (5) years for a second or third offense, or without a time limitation for a fourth or subsequent offense, under this section to determine if an enhanced penalty shall be imposed. The amount of fine and imprisonment imposed in previous convictions shall not be considered in calculating offenses to determine a second, third, fourth or subsequent offense of this section.
(b) Before a defendant enters a plea of guilty to an offense under this section, law enforcement must submit certification to the prosecutor that the defendant’s driving record, the confidential registry and National Crime Information Center record have been searched for all prior convictions, nonadjudications, pretrial diversions and arrests for driving or operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicating liquor or while under the influence of any other substance that has impaired the person’s ability to operate a motor vehicle. The results of the search must be included in the certification.
All the strongly worded scholastic loyalty on this site, and this guy, drunk lardass that he is, still managed to ascend to be the PR director at one of the two big (albeit inferior, nationally) ones and you want his head for DUI? Oh you Baptist clowns. Seems like not too long ago, the distinguished grandson of this same school's Legal Royalty (on both sides) walked with about 18 months on a kidnapping/DV/rape case. Granted, the girl was from out of State, but man, ya'll put the H squarely in Hypocrisy.
I love people who live in Glass Housing Projects. We are ALL literally one step from ending up like these folks we readily condemn. Remember Karma is a devious bitch.
I know Danny. He is a good person. These hateful comments are so painful and hurt deeply. He is a good man but is addicted to the disease of alcohol. Do not even comment of you have never heard of the effects of dopamine.
Holy moly! Rough 58 years, he looks 88.
@2:41
Until he kills someone you love.
Btw I can forgive a dopamine addict who goes in shopping sprees until they are bankrupt, or posts dirty pictures for “likes” and gets fired, but a drunk driver is on a whole different level.
Dopamine is why I troll this shitty blog so hard.
@2:41pm wrote “…disease of alcohol” and “of you have heard of the effects of dopamine.”
Sounds like you have the disease of a Mississippi education. Please attempt to re-write your comment so we can understand what the hell you’re trying to say. And lay off the alcohol, it kills brain cells.
Except we are talking about the fourth, not the third DUI.

Nope. She was from a small town in South Mississippi.
2:41 can judge us, be we cant judge a criminal. Got it.
I hope he gets help, but I have not desire in leaving that decision up to him any longer and allowing him to kill innocent people.
He clearly has the means to seek treatment for his dopamine addiction. He has chosen to selfishly indulge and in the most reckless of manners.
Lock him up and he will be forced to heal. Win-Win.
I have been fortunate to know Danny for over a year and I'm proud to call him my friend. He's a dedicated and decorated American who fought for our country earning The Bronze Star while serving in multiple wars. Like many of us, Danny has been afflicted with the disease of alcoholism along with suffering from PTSD. The good news is we serve a forgiving, loving and gracious God. May that same God have mercy on all of us who inappropriately judge.
Jail time for him? I'll drink to that (But not drive).
4:33 PM - You are absolutely correct. GOD forgives. However, the Justice system convicts and incarcerates. These are the simple facts for both Christians and Heathens, Brother
10:10am is right.
It takes a financial toll on a family to pay expensive fees for 6 months for a successful detox and live-in rehab once an alcoholic reaches two fifths of cheap vodka a day.
The person I know was addicted to drinking after one year in an Ole Miss fraternity. His family made big financial sacrifices for best help available and it worked. He's been sober for about five years now, has a good job and a steady girlfriend, just got a promotion.
Kinda feel sorry for the guy except he put way too many innocent people at risk by being a dumbass.
Get him off the road and into treatment. Plus, a permanent license revocation.
Damn, just a few years too late. Otherwise, DHS could have used some of their TANF slush fund to send him off to a cushy detox facility too.
2:19 Bull f’en shite. One step for YOU perhaps but not the majority of people. I get drunk all the time….and stay my happy slender butt on my property in a camp chair…NOT BEHIND A WHEEL!
I stay amazed at the redneck stupidity of the anonymous trolls on this site. You don't get a "dopamine addiction" dumbass. I hope when you loudmouths face God you are just as cocky.
@6:43
Who are you calling ignorant? TikTok, Instagram, reddit, and Facebook, have all made their fortunes on dopamine addiction. People absolutely want that emotional high when their idiotic content gets liked.
Kingfish is checking his blogger metrics constantly for the very same reason.
2:41 - You may know him and he may be "addicted to the disease of alcohol" but HE IS NOT ADDICTED TO DRIVING WHILE DRUNK. That's a choice, not a disease.
If he's a decorated veteran with PTSD, the psych folks at the V.A. have failed him. No surprise there.
He needs treatment for alcohol addiction even if sent to prison. Alcohol addiction is a disease & driving under influence is a crime. Society needs and deserves a solution.
You people are awful.
11:06 is right.
The adult who cannot seem to keep just enjoy his disease from the safety of his own home is the good guy here.
You folks who don't want your loved ones to share the road with a habitually impaired offender are awful.
REMINDER:
This mugshot is the type who is in every post commenting about medical cannabis, typing ignorant drunken screeds with liver spot stained hands.
Wow. I truly hope that each of you judgmental cowards hiding behind your screen is judged just as harshly as you have judged and berated this man.
Yes, he made terrible mistakes while under the influence. He knows that, and has to live with that fact. He doesn’t condone drinking and driving nor does he think it’s right. In active addiction you do and say things that aren’t you. Things that you would normally balk at…
He is a decorated veteran. A war hero. He has fought in multiple wars for our country. He has fought for our freedom. He’s seen things that no one should ever have to, but he did it to serve our country. I cannot imagine how much that must screw with your head. He does have PTSD. I’m sure that you would too if you had to see and do the things that he had to. Danny has a huge heart and yes, he has feelings just like you and I do. I cannot imagine reading these hateful and cruel comments about myself, can you? As for the people who made cheep shots about his looks, I’m sure you would all look beautiful in your mug shots on one of the worst days of you life. It’s inhumane and demoralizing what you do. I pray that I would never talk about ANYONE like some of you have talked about him. I can’t believe how hateful and cruel some of these comments are.
I truly feel sorry for those of you who are so full of hate that you sit there and post hateful comments about a man that you don’t even know. Get a life…. Most of your hateful comments are accompanied with some sort of comment revealing how ignorant you are. I’m actually embarrassed for some of you.
If you don’t know anything about addiction, then good for you. I hope that you never have to. I hope that your child or loved one never has to experience this horrible disease. I hope you never have to witness the light fade out of your loved ones eyes. It destroys you from the inside out. When you get sober like Danny has, it is incredibly difficult. It is always accompanied by shame and self hate. Thank you for adding to that for him. Please, for your sake at least do your research before making a fool of yourself by trying to talk about something that you know nothing about. I really enjoyed reading the comment siting social media platforms as your references.
I am guessing most of these hateful comments come from the same people who’s children are bullying other kids to the point of suicide. Well done! Your actions have consequesnces. Try imagining that God forbid, your loved one was on this trashy site. Can you comprehend what reading these comments about themselves would do to them? Try getting an education, open your mind just a little bit, and if you call yourself a Christian while posting this cruel hate, you should open your bible.
As for James Hendrix, I honestly believe that you are an evil person who has no moral compass. No one that I have come accross has any respect for who you are and what you do. I hope you are proud of yourself for allowing this severe bullying on your site. Good job! Karma can be a really mean bitch Kingfish…. :) ;)
Wow, 7:53...take a deep breath. You're obviously a relative. No, he hasn't made 'mistakes'. He's made poor choices. A choice may be outrageous, but it's not a mistake. It's willingly and with forethought...MADE. Stop playing loose with the word 'mistake'.
And you play the 'Christian' card so well. This has nothing to do with Christianity. It's about poor choices, bad behavior. Get outa here with that crap.
PTSD does not cause or lead to drunk driving or the conscious decision to do that, so stop with the pity card.
You seem to know him well...So the question arises as to where the hell have you been following or leading up to the four drunk driving convictions and all the times he simply was not blue-lighted?
7:53 makes that mistake that so many make in thinking that you can guilt Christians into being perfect and tolerant of all. That is not what Christianity is.
We know we aren't perfect, just as this criminal is not.
And if you love this man, you should have gotten him the help he needs after one of the first 3 DUIs.
Stop making excuses and attempting to enable this behavior. You should be ashamed of yourself. You clearly know him well, but you did nothing to protect society from the disease that he has no control over?
You seem to have a lot of hate in your heart.
I will pray for you both and I hope you help your friend make better decisions before he kills someone and has to live with that as well.
Say what you will about this man but he is in the grips of a progressive illness only a higher power can take away from him. I pray for him that he may find this peace, and pray for his family and public to give him grace.
I'm the bad guy for reporting this story?
He got a fourth DUI. How many jobs has he lost because of this problem? He was already convicted of a third offense DUI. What are you going to say if he kills someone driving drunk? Sometimes jail is used to protect you from yourself. This may be one of those times.
It won't be surprising to learn if well-meaning friends urge the court and DA show leniency towards him.
What would the headline be if instead of a fourth arrest he killed someone (or more) as that woman did on Highway 18? Look at all the hell being raised over that one because her previous arrests were not prosecuted. Is that where you want your friend to be?
If he hasn’t already faced enough consequences to get his life in order, then I pray that the justice system is able to slap some sense into him. Making the same selfish decision to put other peoples families at risk so he could drive drunkenly to his destination is an asshole move. He probably doesn’t think he is hurting anyone except for himself, but hopefully he can learn something while in the custody of the state. My bet is Tate will set him free and mention something about cancel culture and his status as a war vet.
Any chance we could get ahold of the dashcam or body cam footage from the arrest? I’m curious to see just how inebriated he appeared to the arresting officer.
