JPD issued the following safety tips for driving at night in Jackson.
The following Safety Tips were compiled by the Jackson Police Department to contribute to the safety and security of the citizens of Jackson. We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware. Please share this information with family, friends and neighbors.
If you are driving:
· * Avoid driving alone or at night.
· * If you must shop at night, park in a well- lighted area.
· * Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car.
· * Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device.
· * Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.
· * Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked.
· * Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside (even at home).
· * Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. (this creates a temptation for thieves). If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.
· * Locate your keys prior to going to your car.
· * When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings.
· * Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area.
· * Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put then down or on top or the car in order to open the door.
One underhanded tactic that some criminals use to carjack is called the “bump and run.” The carjacker and an accomplice will intentionally bump their vehicle into the rear of the victim’s car. Thinking he or she has been involved in a fender bender, the victim will get out of his or her car to assess the damage and exchange insurance information. That’s when the carjacker will threaten the victim and steal his or her car. The carjacker zooms away in your vehicle, his accomplice drives away in his, and the victim is left stranded.
If you do get rear-ended, pull your car over into a well-lit and populated area. You want as many people as you can to see you. If there isn’t a good place to pull over, keep driving (with the flashers on, so if the person who bumped you is an average citizen, they know you will be stopping) until you find one. If you suspect the bumper is a car thief, call 911 and stay in your car with the doors locked and windows rolled up until the police arrive.
The Jackson Police Department encourages all citizens to stay safe. If you see a crime being committed dial 911. For non emergencies call the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234

Shoot to kill... that will stop this crap
Third world shit hole.
They could’ve made the list a lot shorter. Here, I’ll help:
Don’t enter the city limits of Jackson, ever.
Yeah, and keep a loaded gun in the car so you can shoot and kill that piece of shit scumbag that is about to kill you and carjack your car. Or even better, stay out of this shit-hole of a city known as - Jackistan. These so-called Jackistan city leaders could fuck up a ham sandwich.
KF, please post the Pearl Police Department's Safety Tips for comparison.
F*** all that S*** by JPD. The only thing that is going to help you equiping yourself with a gun and proper training and knowledge on how to use it. You can't rely on the JPD, they take hours to respond to a call, if they even show up at all.
This is your periodic reminder that if you have the means to leave Jackson, and stayed anyway, you chose this. Good luck.
'Avoid parking next to a truck, van or vehicle with tinted windows'
If in Jackson, what the hell is left? If LEO would enforce the tint laws, 9000 vehicles would be impounded.
NE Jackson resident here… I thought mr mayor crap mouth Lumumba said it’s a perception problem not a crime problem. Oh I bet he gets pissed just like when the state issued a boil water notice
Whew he will make heads roll at his news conference.
The Jackson City Council should put these recommendations on every billboard within 15 miles of the city limits on every highway.
These are common sense recommendations that everyone, everywhere should practice.
Seemed off this am on WLBT, they showed a wreck on 220 and the Ambulance had clearly been there for a bit, but Wilson Stribling noted "JPD is not on the scene yet".
Maybe that happens commonly and I just don't realize, but most accidents I seem to see blue lights before the red ones arrive.
Figured, Jackson...you know.
Why is this list even necessary if there is only a perception of crime?
No tips about buying and driving an armored vehicle?
Or body armor?
How many other cities in this state tell people to not drive alone at night
Warning the metro area and the state to "Avoid driving alone or at night" while in Jackson has to be one of the most stupid anti-commerce statements to ever have been communicated from the Lumumba administration.
Lumumba RESIGN Now.
Get out NOW-while you can.
@ Bill Dees
"Avoid driving alone or at night." is something you find acceptable? Seriously?
I see the gun worshipping suburban racist rednecks have swarmed the comment section already
Speaking of JPD, there were 3 or 4 abandoned and badly wrecked vehicles on 55 S from Woodrow Wilson to Fortification this morning… Was there some sort of “situation” last night?
No tips about carrying jacketed hollow point (JHP)? No mention of avoiding those evil gun shows?
Kudos to JPD. We all need to be vigilant during the night regardless of location. Amazing how some people find something negative to say about everything. Seems like they have the comments ready before the post.
I bet you tough guys who say shoot to kill have never done so.
@ Bill Dees - are you being sarcastic, or do you honestly believe this is "common sense"?
That is good advice.
I would urge the Jackson haters to see what auto-theft and carjacking stats are in the places they love to visit...even ones with more officers per capita.
If a jacking crew taps your car, race outta Jackson city limits, pull over in front of Pearl PD.
I got' nothing bad to say about Jackson.
The folks who get angry when others speak of the factual problems made me leave years ago. How dare people complain about the inhumane living conditions.
Cheer them on and give them money or get out.
I listened.
This is the city they want and I sincerely wish them well in the area they built.
Call 911? Mayor shown any evidence to dispute recent claims that calls to 911 were not being ignored? Where is Lumba today?
@12:10
Good point. Yet it seems many Jackson residents have.
Read carefully. JPD is not limiting these safety tips to nighttime.
JPD’s safety tip number one:
“If you are driving:
Avoid driving alone or at night.”
So JPD does not consider Jackson safe enough for anyone to drive alone, be it day or night.
And they do not consider night driving in Jackson safe.
At least they’re in touch with reality and being direct about this.
If this list doesn't scream move out of Jackson, I don't know what will. If you have to suggest to people not to drive alone at night, you have failed miserably as an administration.
"Avoid driving alone OR at night." To be clear the Jxn PoPo is saying do not drive at night in Jackson, period.
Learn how to operate your vehicle properly instead of just jamming on the brakes and the gas as a routine. If you are approaching a red light that is red, slow down easy in advance to time your travel through the intersection instead of having to stop. If you do have to stop at a light, leave a car length of space between you and the car ahead of you; this gives you just a little bit of ground to get out of a jam should something nefarious go down. An outside lane is preferable to having a lane on either side of you if your travel route will allow that. Try it. It's easy. Saves fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle as well.
When was this posted? Twitter/Facebook??
@ 11:44, it seems everyone wants to live near "suburban racist gun worshiping rednecks" , and I'd bet $50 you do too. I wonder why.
Yes I saw all the cars wrecked on 55 Woodrow Wilson. They were everywhere what happened ?. Drone strike?
@ 11:44 Your problem is you don't like the fact that we shoot back.
I'm a proud redneck, conservative, Christian, hardworking, law abiding, tax paying white male but in your sick twisted brainwashed little world I am the problem. " You reap what you sow"
@ 12:10 If you value MY property more than you do YOUR life you may find out.
Just fold what is left of JPD shutting it down. Put all that are vetted again into the Capitol Police, with the exception of the Admin and Chief level types, and let them roll everywhere. Manning would be better and the name says it all.
"gun worshipping suburban racist rednecks"
Hey, 11:44, if you find racism so offensive, don't use a racial epithet (i.e. redneck) clearly meant to be offensine.
Haven't watched yet, did they recommend not traveling in less than squad strength in at least two vehicles with UAVs checking the route ahead?
Screw single people I guess.
Yesterday morning after eating lunch at Manship my wife and I saw two JPD cruisers parked under the County Line bridge. Not a single cruiser seen on the south bound lanes coming in that morning.
Sadly, they forgot the suggestion to carry a twelve gage pump shootsgun and within a step or two of exiting any building toward your car, fire a precautionary blast into the air, then keep the working end of your shootsgu mving back and forth in a situationally aware maner as you walk toward your vehicle. If bumped by anther vehicle, shoot out the windshield of that vehicle so you will be to beter assess the situation bafore agreeing to discuss the supposed accident.
It's clearly time to shut down this blog. Without it, the perception vanishes and all is well.
And the # 1 rule on "Driving In Jackson at Night"!
IS........Don't Drive in Jackson at Night Period!!!!!!!
I live alone in the suburbs and I rarely have anyone in the car with me so I guess there is no safe way for me to visit.
Having known this for some time without JPD warnings, it is why I have not been in the city limits in almost a year.
Not happy about the garbage dump Jackson has become but shouting for leaders to stop being morons is a waste of time.
August 3, 2022 at 12:19 PM
It's hard to compare crime statistics when Jackson doesn't publish them. But, being advised not to drive alone (anytime), and not to drive at night (regardless of number), is a clear indication that the crime is out of control and there is not a safe place within the city limits.
I’ll make it easier for you haters. Stay at home in your fake stucco houses built in a cow pasture. Or don’t leave your mobile home. Except when a tornado comes.
"Why try? I know why
The feeling inside me says it's time I was gone
Clear head, new life ahead
It's time I was king now, not just one more pawn
Fly by night, away from here
Change my life again
Fly by night, goodbye my dear
My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend"
JPD DOESN’T ANSWER 911 from my experience. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over?
@3:18pm - Over any option inside the city limits of Jackson? Gladly.
@3:18. Right now it’s water and garbage pickup. Wait till your “neighbors” can’t get food. Don’t come to the stucco-adorned palaces of Madison or the hillbilly shacks in Terry, we are acutely aware that Jacksonian refugees can be used for food or fuel
Also, go fuck yourself
Since when has the number of occupants in a car mattered to the thugs in Jackson? Every few days we hear about a thug, or many thugs, shooting into an occupied car with children involved. The more people you have in the car just increases the chance someone will get hit by a hail of bullets.
Who was the genius who thought up the idea the more people you have in the car the safer you are.
Park F-150 in Corner Market parking lot. Climb to top of Fondren Building with
Daniel Defense AR-15 and 100 round Magpul clip with green tip ammo. Wait.
Hell, if driving down 55, I'll get on the Trace at Ridgeland and get back on 55 at Georgetown ( via Hwy 27).
It might cost me an extra 45 minutes, but my chances of survival are greatly enhanced.
Other than the poor souls that have to drive into Jackson for work, I don't understand why any sane person would choose to drive into that town to shop or dine ...(day or night).
What is this nonsense about 20 carjackings in the past 3 days? Nothing on the news, JPD hasn't mentioned it and its only on social media. Is this fear mongering?????
But you people in Jackson get upset when we say stop being a safe haven!!
It's no misconception of crime, it is crime!!
no bebas el agua en jackson
@4:46
Why be so wasteful? You can accomplish the exact same thing with a Ruger 1022 takedown with the integrated suppression barrel and some Aguila 60gr Sniper Subsonic.
Add me to the list of responses pointing out:
"Avoid driving alone or at night."
That single short first bullet point (no, don't pardon the pun) of 6 words *from the Jackson Police Department* ought to be the final sign for anyone with any sense. Anyone who says. even implies, that Jackson doesn't have incredibly serious problems is a damned fool or a damned liar. As to restaurateurs worried about boil water notices, how much water do you really need for 4 or 5 customers?
@4:46 PM - you started out like you are firearms savy, but then you penned "clip." Fail!
“Jackson is safe!”…… Right?
6:32
What's astounding is that there is, apparently, no one working for Lumumba with the wisdom and insight to understand how truly damaging those six words are to the city. Even if the warning be true, and it is, that is a game-changing unforced error.
Another good tip; get your heads out of your assess preoccupied with these damn cell phones and not paying attention to your surroundings.
And parents ensure you teach you kids to wear their seatbelt! Many kids that were killed in automobile accidents their parents would say they were good drivers! But the parents did not stress/teach wearing of the seat belt.
And, I never leave home without old glory (pistol) and a box of bullets. Cause when I have to use it, they will be going up younder or down under!
Lort we’ve gone from Little Detroit ton little Kabul in one year.
I received very similar guidance a few years back... We were staying a few weeks in the beautiful city of Baghdad.
My tip for driving at night in Jackson: Don't.
If, in the course of going from one suburb to another, you find it a worthwhile risk to drive through Jackson, drive so fast that it reduces the odds that someone can drive up next to you.
Question for the gun nuts: what are you doing to do when there is an armed thug on each side of your car, both pointing their guns at your head? That is exactly what happened about a month ago to a friend of mine, and she was armed and knows how to use her weapon. There is no way you are going to shoot both thugs before one of them shoots you.
Just stay out of Jackson every day and every night. There is nothing left in Jackson to justify the danger of going there. It is a failed city.
We're closing next week on a house we are buying in Maine. That is where we will spend 6 months of each year. We will return to our rural Mississippi farmland during the winter months unless we become acclimated to the northern cold and snow and decide to stay in Maine year-round. We are not rich, we are nearly 70 years old, and we love our home state, but we are not going to squander our remaining years anywhere near Jackson. Such a shame.
Don’t drive alone at night...just encouraging carpooling to save the environment until all of Joe’s, Chuck’s and Nancy’s kids get their EV charging stations installed in Jackson. Of course you can’t even make a NASCAR style pit stop in Jackson safely any more, so how will you sit and wait 30 minutes for your batteries to charge?
I said it once, and I will say it again, take the advice that is given to a boxer when entering the ring, protect yourself at all times.
@5:02pm - Uh, the Trace doesn’t go anywhere near Georgetown chief.
8:14 AM, If there is an armed thug on each side of you holding a gun at your head the last thing you need to do is set still. Move, either forward or backward. If there is anything in your way make a hole. Then get your gun out and make a difference. You damn sure do not set still and let them take gun, car, and possible your life.
"@5:02pm - Uh, the Trace doesn’t go anywhere near Georgetown chief".
Well sport, re-read the post.
Perhaps a bit slower this time.
It said ... "via Hwy 27"
Yes, that would be at the Utica exit on the Trace for those that can't read a map.
(Until then, stay safe in Jackson and enjoy a big ole glass of
Jackson tap water at your fave Jackson restaurant).
@4:28pm - Still doesn’t make any sense chief. I55 ain’t anywhere near Georgetown lol
"Since when has the number of occupants in a car mattered to the thugs in Jackson? Every few days we hear about a thug, or many thugs, shooting into an occupied car with children involved. The more people you have in the car just increases the chance someone will get hit by a hail of bullets.
Who was the genius who thought up the idea the more people you have in the car the safer you are."
At least 2 reasons:
1) Reduces paperwork for JPD. More people shot up in one vehicle is less paperwork than a bunch of "singles".
2) Chances of er'body getting shot up in one vehicle is less than a single occupant/driver. That leaves witnesses to help with the JPD investigation.
