Shaun King must be proud. Hoodlums tore down the Turning Angel statue in the Natchez City Cemetery today. The Natchez Democrat reported:

Natchez City Cemetery workers and Natchez Police are assessing damage to the Turning Angel statute that was found this afternoon lying on the ground next to its pedestal.
One of the angel’s wings was broken and cemetery workers were not sure how the statue was removed from its pedestal....
Rushing said cemetery workers told her the angel was OK Tuesday morning before they left for lunch at noon. A social media post made at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday showing the angel lying on the ground began being passed around and the cemetery workers returned to see the angel off the pedestal shortly after, Rushing said.
Cemetery workers are making arrangements to locate a monument restoration company to ensure the statue is properly repaired, Rushing said, adding that workers said the wing appeared to be a pretty clean break.
“If it is not something that is just crumbled maybe there would be a way that it could be reattached,” Rushing said. “Hopefully someone can be shamed into admitting that they did something that was pretty bad.”.... Rest of article.
The city of Natchez tells the history of the memorial on its website:
This beautiful angel monument is overlooking five headstones, each with the same date of death. The Angel inspired the novel Turning Angel by Gregi Iles.
On March 14, 1908 there was a HUGE explosion at the Natchez Drug Company, which was a 5 story brick structure located at the corner of Main and South Union Street cattycorner from the Natchez Cathedral. The explosion was so massive it totally destroyed the 5 story building killing numerous people including the businesses employees that were working at the time.
The explosion put the drug company out of business, but the owner of the Natchez Drug Company was so devastated that he purchased a lot to bury his employees and he purchased this angel monument to place at their gravesite. His youngest employee was 12 years old.
This monument is now referred to as ‘The Turning Angel’ because at night when cars drive by on Cemetery Road their headlights shine upon the monument and to some it appears to turn as their car passes by.
Shaun King? What does the CNN provocateur have to do with a Natchez statute in a cemetery? He tweeted yesterday:
(#1) Yes, I think the statues of the white European they claim is Jesus should also come down.
They are a form of white supremacy.
Always have been.
In the Bible, when the family of Jesus wanted to hide, and blend in, guess where they went?
EGYPT!
Not Denmark.
Tear them down.
(#2) All murals and stained glass windows of white Jesus, and his European mother, and their white friends should also come down.Someone heard him. Hope he is happy.
They are a gross form white supremacy.
Created as tools of oppression.
Racist propaganda.
They should all come down.

God have mercy on us. The world is going to hell, apparently at a swas run.
Well, Shaun, at least Jesus HAD white friends.
I'm sure he is happy, he's a provocateur (as you noted). His tweets garnered millions of views. Don't feed the beast. He'll be consumed by his own devices. I think an equal number on both sides hate him (one for being a fraud and the other for being a racial provocateur). He's an opportunist.
I'll say this about the statues tumbling, though. While I'm not for it, I get it. When peaceful means of protest and cries for relief from improper abuse were demonized (shamed for quietly kneeling rather than standing), what is left? People got so pissed off they started tearing shit up to get attention. It's not abnormal, it's actually quite American.
Maybe we should build a statue of these vandals and name some schools after them. After all, that's the only way future generations can learn from our mistakes according to some on here.
Just more culture war . . .
This is BS. Straight up vandalism. Asses need to go to jail.
I don't think the people who are carrying out these violent acts all over the country understand the backlash that is about to occur because of their actions. The Democrats are burying their own grave by making excuses for the rioting and not strongly condemning all of these heinous actions. They're also ensuring the re-election of President Trump. People are sick and tired of being yelled at about white privilege and being forced to bow down to BLM.
I am opposed to tearing down any statue. What if an MLK statue gets torn down?
Wrong, 7:03 - Until recent years it was indeed abnormal to protest and not know what they hell you're protesting - Or to 'tear shit up' that has nothing to do with your cause or concerns, just for the sake of 'tearing shit up'. But, as you said, YOU 'get it'. It's your mentality that's abnormal.
Actavious: "Let's go tear some shit up."
Junebug: "Why?"
Actavious: "Who cares, c'mon. Ain't nobody gone do shit."
7:03: "I get it!"
@10:12, what backlash? Most people are bendin the knee. Businesses are bening over backward. So what backlash are you promising?
11:02
These white antifa basement dwellers have already torn down statues of abolishonist as well as attempted to teardown one of Harriet tubman... don't forget the statue of the black soldiers they ripped down. I see they want Ghandi removed also. It never stops.
I wonder if any of these fools know specifically what they are protesting. So far, they've torn down or desecrated statues of abolitionists, authors writing about their time being held as a slave, and military figures who fought against slavery. When will they destroy the 6 statues of Lenin in the United States, or the statue of Robert Byrd?
Leftists love to characterize groups of people as monoliths - with their rallying cry "All cops are bastards..." by that logic, all Senators are Ted Kennedy - so destroy the statue that honors a man who killed a woman in an attempt to preserve his political career.
Here's a link to a story about statues that honor racist Democrats: https://www.nationalreview.com/2017/08/monuments-honoring-racists-democrats-predominate/
7:03PM - what you’ve saying is, since everyone didn’t agree with you, i.e. you didn’t get your way, its OK to break laws and destroy property.
The right to protest goes both ways.
If people want to counter protest an
incredibly rich opportunist that makes a fortune off of selling
high priced Nike products
made in China
with child labor and
in sweat shops
with extremely large profit margins
to inner city “poor people”
due to the incredibly rich opportunists disrespect for the men and women that fought and died for his right to do so, what’s wrong with this?
Your first paragraph makes you sound like a decent person, while your second makes excuses for lawlessness.
Sounds like something a rich, privileged, private school/fancy university white person would say that lives in an upscale (at least 95% white) neighborhood (gated?) with a 30A sticker on their fancy car that rants and attends protest between beach trips and trips abroad.
..."They hate those STATUES!"....
If religious statues and paintings depicted Jesus and the Holy Family as Jewish, wouldn’t that become Jewish privilege then?
Eating Tide Pods is out.
Destroying statues is in.
THUG LIFE
"I am opposed to tearing down any statue. What if an MLK statue gets torn down?"
Hell, it just might....once they find out he was a staunch Republican that advocated personal responsibility and hard work along with his heroic civil rights fight.
Uttering such words as "Jewish Privilege" is disgusting antisemitism. Those are the same words that lead to the Holocaust.
It is time for Greg Iles to offer a reward, I would be glad to contribute
ANTIFA...........sissies who were chosen last for kickball or dodge ball!
3:11, your narrative omits the part about trying to bring awareness and change to absolutely abusive and deadly behavior. Yeah, if I ask police to stop killing black people indiscriminately for decades, and they don't stop, I'm going to start tearing shit up, too. But, it's no wonder you ignored that part of the comment, you've ignored murderous cops for decades because they were only killing black people.
While the BLM crowd, as well as others have a valid point, change is coming to PD's nation wide. We are currently redoing Policy and Procedures. Will this change attitudes, No it will not, but will make our officers more aware of what they must do and their responsibilities. Will this make some go away, yes it will, and to not just our benefit, but societies as well. Holding all of my brother and sister LEO's as murderers is just as wrong as those that hold all Blacks as gangsters/thugs/rapist and thieves. Time and attitude on both sides of the fence will change things. But changes overnight with what we have is going to be our challenge. Before the hang them high group starts complaining, come join us for awhile. Appreciated your input, sure I will be castrated on this site, but so be it.
Great comment and perspective, 10:59. More of this is what is needed moving forward.
-10:40.
To follow up on the thoughtful comment at 10:59: As I recall, 5 years ago body cameras on police officers was pretty much unheard of. That is a major change that was strongly resisted at first, but has led to a higher level of accountability. To say that nothing happened in the wake of other public outcries and protests is just not true. Significant progress had been made.
@10:40 -- You are painting with a very broad brush. Police brutality is dealt with when it is discovered. In the George Floyd case the officers involved were fired within 24 hours, and Chauvin was arrested within the week. NO ONE IGNORED MURDEROUS COPS. But, the protests started immediately, and turned into riots before justice could even be served. Mob mentality is not the rule of law, and if you "tear shit up" you are not serving a cause -- you are committing a criminal act.
@ 10:40: If you are correct in saying police for years have been killing blacks indiscriminately, then what have police been doing to whites? In every year on record more whites have died from cops than blacks.
Oh yeah, that fact doesn't advance the BLM narrative so it cannot be considered.
Facts can be pesky.
12:07 - false. What actually happened - as the Minneapolis chief of police has spoken about many times over the last 2 weeks - is that the department's initial stance was that Mr. Floyd died due a health condition he had while in custody. When a 17 year old sent them the video he had taken on his phone, the police department changed their position and then fired them - for the murder and for lying about it. So, the 4 cops on scene were absolutely covering up a murderous cop until their lie was exposed.
12:49, seriously? I know math is hard, but the proportion of whites killed is way less proportionate. It's not even close.
@12:49, the fact is we don’t know how many people have been shot or killed by cops since that information is not required to be reported. Some precincts report numbers voluntarily and some don’t. It’s pretty moronic to draw conclusions based on a lack of data. Hopefully in the future, police will be required to report when they kill someone, it’s one of the main proposals in the police reform bills currently being discussed.
12:49, there are literally 4.5 times as many white people as black people in this country. Of course there will be more. Math can be pesky. While that doesn't advance your narrative, you're likely just too ignorant to get it.
There is no evidence at all that the destruction of this statue has anything to do with the current protests. As a matter of fact, historically, the destruction of grave markers has been done by locals, without regard to race. Amazing what a few cans of beer and trying to impress your friends will do!
What is missing is any mention of a hate crime.
If a headstone at Jewish cemetery had been vandalized, damaged, defaced, etc., there would be a full investigation by the City, State, and possibly the Feds.
But, Christians are not a "Protected Class" of American citizens.
@10:40 - everything in your post is false. There is no epidemic of police indiscriminately killing innocent black people. Facts and statistics don’t bear that out. But don’t let that get in the way of your narrative.
@1:51 in heightened times, its safe to assume.
This tragedy is nothing more than the natural outcome of that portion of society which, regardless of criminal behavior, expects no consequences.
I can do whatever the hell I want to do and nobody is going to do a damned thing about it because they fear me and my group associations and the additional hell I'll raise if they confront me.
You ain't seen nothin' yet. This is the proverbial tip of the iceberg.
Talcum X probably is proud.
The same Donner keeps replying to his or her (or it’s) own “thoughtful” comment.
^^^ 4:50 Yep
10:40 - you use the word indiscriminately to describe situations where law enforcement officers have had to resort to using deadly force against black people. The definition of indiscriminate is "done at random or without careful judgment."
If you honestly believe that police officers (like myself) either seek opportunities to kill black people, or indiscriminately take life you have a warped view of how deadly force encounters unfold. I'm retired from a large department out West and have unfortunately had to take a human life in the course of performing my job. The fact is, and most cops will agree, that the offender makes the decisions for you. When a person becomes a threat to me, my partner, my colleagues, or the public, the police officer has to act decisively - and must live with that decision for the rest of their life. To say that we randomly kill people without exercising a great amount of discretion or judgment is reckless and malinformed.
The truth of the matter is that we respond to calls; and, with imperfect information we're expected to make perfect split-second decisions that could cost either us or the offender our lives.
I'm not sure if PDs offer ride-alongs any more, but I would encourage you to experience what an officer deals with in the course of a shift and make your statements and judgements using real information, not hyperbole or conjecture.
6:29,
Appreciate your service. I really do. I've been involved in situations where police were very helpful. Also, I appreciate you finding the right understanding of indiscriminate, unlike 3:40, who doesn't understand large words and likes to make up facts as he goes.
However, many other police officers have weighed in saying that the recent Floyd and Taylor killings were without merit. They objectively never should have happened. Poor judgment got them killed. The "deadly force" that was instigated in those instances were created by the police. Neither person was a threat to any police officer. When a young black man is running away, you don't shoot them in the back. You're not acting decisively or in self defense in those moments, you're reacting poorly or maliciously.
If you can't see there's a problem that exists in an otherwise highly noble profession, then I'll agree to walk away from the discussion. 10:59 gets it. Glad he/she is still involved and you're retired, frankly.
1:08, 6:29 here - I appreciate and welcome the conversation, and I agree that change does need to come to the law enforcement profession. What that looks like remains to be seen, but I hope that cooler heads prevail over raw emotion and that steps are taken to consider the safety of both officers and the public.
And for the record, Floyd wasn't a victim of excessive force, he was murdered by that officer, every police officer active and retired agrees with that and agrees that the officer (I won't even type his name), and those who stood by and did nothing should spend the rest of their lives in prison.
There were several instances throughput my career where I would have been well justified in using deadly force, but didn't, and I'm at peace with what I had to do, but I didn't go looking for the opportunity to kill someone, the suspect gave me no choice.
4:17, agreed. Thank you for your rationality, and again for the times you put yourself in harm's way for others. Perhaps change will come.
1:08
Well well well
Would you look at that.
