5th Circuit, as well as other circuits, have ruled people have a right to film the police. I agree with that ruling.

A few years ago Richland chased a suspect into Jackson. The media arrived at the scene and began filming the arrest in Jackson. The Richland cop screamed at them to turn off their cameras and of course they did. I would've kept on going and taken the arrest. Then won the lawsuit and owned him.

The problem is we get a snippet of what really happened and everyone goes to war over that snippet. Unfortunately, the police all too often don't help themselves by putting out the facts that in many cases will help them.

In the mugshot he looks like a smug 20-year old punk, emphasis on the mugshot. Now he'll get to serve some years in prison. Hope it was worth it.

I agree with KF that playing the "control the narrative" game is a losing proposition, where the police have nothing to gain and their own credibility to lose.

Rarely does it work out for the person resisting arrest with force. They end up with more serious charges, seriously injured, or dead. Regardless of what one thinks about police, someone should be teaching folks survival skills rather than trying to show how macho you are by resisting arrest.

Body cameras are obtained through Grants and Departments do not have to shoulder the whole expense. Now getting them to use them properly is another issue.

No person is going to allow police to arrest them. Nothing is done if they resist arrest and the possibility of getting millions in a lawsuit is too great of a temptation.
We may as well defund the police. We have handcuffed them so they cannot do their job.

Guy filming was a disgrace & should be charged with obstruction. When an officer is fighting for his life & others an emanate danger supersedes yelling at and filming. Then to insult the policeman by asking if he was okay is insulting. If he was concerned about safety, why was he not on the phone to 911, We do not want our place defunded or to live without the men & women-in blue!

what did i do wrong? when the squad car lights are on, clear it is targeting me, I sit and wait for instructions. get a ticket, go home. punk turned a traffic violation into felonies.

Ridgeland can be in my view overly aggressive on traffic violations, my meek daughter took a ticket last month I would have contested.

I was in the white car at the stop light and observed most of these events. The officer was attacked and injured. The suspect ran, I am sure it was because he was totally innocent. He was apprehended with great care under the circumstances. The bystanders filmed the events and a few shouted at the police including the individual who posted the video in this link. The suspect was charged with several of the offenses for which he was stopped. Reckless driving, expired tag according to this post. For the sake of all of us, this cannot be the new norm in Jackson. Break the law, assault the police (thank goodness he suspect wasn't armed), flee from the scene, and shout why are you doing this, while inciting bystanders. Only the calm actions of the Ridgeland police averted a disaster. And did I mention that several of the officers were Black men.

10:44, the way I look at that, the person being stopped was in 100% control of what happened after being stopped. No, the truth is that the BLM riots have emboldened criminals “post-stop.” The Defund the Police campaigns have caused them to believe everything is the cop’s fault, not their own. He fled from an earlier traffic stop so they were already looking for him when they saw him.

So, I guess the standard now is the officer has to put up with getting the sh** beat out of him when making an arrest rather than using his weapon.

Will be interesting to see how it started. Hopefully the officer was wearing a body camera and had it turned on. Tough to know where to place blame when we don’t see how it started. Unfortunately we can no longer trust the cops do things by the book or morally. If the cop didn’t provoke or escalate this situation, then throw the book at the guy.

Show of hands - how many of you have ever been asked to step out of a car before during a traffic violation? From the age of 16-25 I was pulled over nearly 20 times. At least 5 of those times I was hammered, 1 time I was on my way back to the frat house with more than an ounce of marijuana I picked up from a friend in Starkville and drove back to Oxford, and one time with a suspended license. I’ve only been asked to step out of the car one time when I was so drunk I hardly knew my name and the cop let me call someone to pick me up on the side of the road. I used to think this was due to a combination of luck and the fact that I was always very polite to the officer, but I’m pretty sure now it’s because I was a well-spoken white kid in a nice car. However, had I been black, there’s no question in my mind that I would not be the licensed professional I am today. I was allowed to make and get away with stupid f’ups while growing up, but African Americans are popped the first time and quickly become repeat offenders the next time they’re caught committing the same non-violent crimes (excepting the DUIs) I did through college and graduate school. I haven’t seen one video of an African American traffic stop where the officer didn’t ask the person to get out of the car (even if nothing happened). My point is, how can you blame African Americans for being pissed off by the disproportionate policing of people of color and lashing out because of it. They’re tired of having their tea taxed, so to speak, and they’re not putting up with it any more.

The guy went from a couple of misdemeanors to a couple of felonies. In my opinion, it is because of the self-control of the officer the guy isn't dead. The officer deserves recognition for his self restraint.

How long before bystanders become emboldened to intervene in a lawful arrest?

I urge the Ridgeland police department to clarify whether this man had fled from an earlier traffic stop, whether he pulled over after the officer turned on the blue lights or whether he attempted to evade by pulling into a gas pump, whether he was also speeding when the officer began the pursuit, whether he has a prior criminal record, and whether the car was stolen as some mentioned at the scene, perhaps incorrectly.

The camera guy's yelling makes this seem worse than it was. The camera guy also got in at the end of a continuing pursuit. I'll wait to read the police report.

It's not all that hard when you don't act like a poor racist victim.

Citizens might as well get ready to pay police recruits over $70,000/year and veteran officers $100,000. Otherwise, we will be unable to recruit good officers and the last few weeks should tell us why. When your child is kidnapped or your daughter raped, no one but law enforcement is worth 2 cents to you.

Kudos to the Ridgeland police officer made the initial stop and those responding officers. We support the thin blue line 100%. Thank you for your service, dedication and sacrifice. Serious question: Why do people fight the police at traffic stops? In many of these situations a simple traffic infraction is transformed into a felony where the officer might have to use deadly force. I can understand the desperate felon who doesn't want to go back to prison, but please explain the driver with no record who decides to ruin, or even lose his life in the blink of an eye.

I'm serious - I want an defensible explanation for this kind of behavior.

Yes, I am white. When I see the blue lights behind me I pull over and produce my license, registration, and proof of insurance. I don't get pulled over much, maybe three times that I can remember during the last fifteen or so years, mainly because I OBEY THE RULES. When I do get stopped I comply and don't act the fool.

One time I was stopped by a black JPD officer as I was heading north on Manhattan Road toward Cedars of Lebanon. It was just after lunch time. It appeared to be a DUI check or something as several other motorists were stopped at the same time. I produced my paper work and minded my manners and the officer just looked at my stuff, handed it back to me, and said "have a nice day." No problem for the officer or myself.

I've given the comment at 1:20 some though, and here's my $0.02. I'm white and I have been asked to step out of the car numerous times during traffic stops, usually right before I was arrested.

There were many other times I could have been arrested on suspicion of something (due to open container, etc.), but was let go with a ticket, or even a warning. Was this because maybe the officer thought I looked like someone with a future who didn't need the black mark on his record? I honestly don't know. Would the same officer have given a clean-cut black guy the same benefit of the doubt? I have no idea.

To all the officers who gave me breaks (and to those who didn't): I appreciate you. Today I do my best to live an honorable life as a contributing member of civilized society, and I haven't been "treated unfairly" by the police in a long time.

I comment on this board often, and I retired to Mississippi after retiring from a large metropolitan police department out West - I was around for the Rodney King riots; and as bad as that was, the level of coordination and funding (nearly half a billion dollars of corporate extortion) behind the current insurrection (that's what it is folks) is disturbing.

Police abandoning precincts and local leaders ceding territory to what's tantamount to warlords is something I never thought I'd see stateside. This will not end quietly, but will prove the concept that law and order must be maintained.

The CIA and other NGOs used these tactics against other countries to put in place corrupt leaders to do the bidding of the CIA. Now, these same tactics are being used here. The plan is to remove the US from being a superpower and to make a third world level system. We have had corrupt leaders for years, that is the first step. Lawlessness is the second step, with rampant inflation and worthless currency the final nail in the coffin. 10:38, the difference between South America and the United States is the Second Amendment, this crap will work in cities and states with onerous gun control; but will fail in areas of less government dependence.

Just look at how quickly the mayor of Portland changed his tune when these folks tried to establish an occupied protest area in front of his house. Its going to be a long and difficult summer, but law and order will prevail.

Three questions -

1. Why does the title caption saying the bystanders were yelling at the cops? All I hear is bystanders yelling is "stop."

2. Was the guy being arrested for a warrant, fleeing an earlier stop? If the cops don't say, then they are on the short bus.

3. Taser or firearm? I assume the former, but I do not know.

If the cops have probable cause to arrest, then they can. Even if they don't, they can still arrest folk. Cops do not have to say you're under arrest out loud, (and I don't know, maybe this officer did) but the cops can say so, and there are sometimes good reasons to do so. One of those is letting bystanders know what's what. This is why a citizen asks, "Am I free to go." If you are not, you are under arrest. Don't resist. The cops can put their hands on you. The suspect is an idiot, but the questions go with being a public servant.

So, regardless of race, if an office stops me, I am never going to strike him or her.

At what point will people realize that no one is above the law.. Treat people with respect and you will get respect in return. If i had been the Officer, I would have shot the man after we tussled.

So many of you wonder why these agencies can’t keep police officers. This is a prime example. Our chief, the coward that he is, sided with the thug yet again. They can say it was to get him help but clearly that’s not the case. The chief is a snake and has always been one so when police are slow to respond to calls or don’t do anything you citizens will know why. Take it up with the crooked administration from the mayors office down. Ridgeland officers are leaving in massive numbers because of the administration. The numbers are the proof. One of you internet gurus do some checking and you will see what’s really going on inside the department.
