Jackson Mayor Addresses Protests & Police Brutality

JPD officers reinstated, referred to D.A. for prosecution.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba issued the following statement.

“Today, as we all pause to commemorate the life of George Floyd, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones. I stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and all of those engaging in civil disobedience against police brutality and the abuse of black bodies across the country and around the world. We are collectively in mourning and still grappling with the trauma of hundreds of years of systemic oppression. We must dismantle the systems that have historically oppressed us and build institutions rooted in justice and equity in their place. We owe this to our children. We owe this to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and every other unsung victim of police brutality.

As demonstrations continue to sweep the nation, some of our own residents have spoken out against the injustices that they have experienced at the hands of law enforcement. We acknowledge the pain of the family of the late Mario Clark whose life was taken during an encounter with Jackson police officers. While I swiftly supported the termination of the JPD officers involved, that decision that was later reversed by the civil service commission. Since then, the Jackson Police Department has referred the case to the District Attorney and the administration has exercised all of its authority and power to support an objective review of this case. We remain focused on building a police department based on trust, integrity, and community collaboration. We remain dedicated to justice.

As the son of two fearless activists, I strive to continue a legacy of activism against the actions, systems, policies, and practices that threaten and suppress the human rights of all people. I am committed to the principles of human rights for human beings and will never cease to fight for justice in every aspect of my work.”

Kingfish note: Um, Mr. Mayor, you are the system.  Sorry, just can't resist posting this video.

"dismantle the systems"
Help me here. I am serious. What systems?

Anonymous said...

addendum to above-

"build institutions'

What institutions?

The current state of the City of Jackson is the culmination of the work by activists like Lumumba and was exactly what was predicted would happen decades ago just like it has happened in many other major cities in this nation.

Is Kush representative of a "system"?

If only the mayor could muster the same concern and "activism' for the many, many, victims of murder and crimes perpetrated on the streets of Jackson against Black people, often children, every week. Why does he have to wait until the police, or some nutcase white person, perpetrates an act of mayhem against a Black citizen to be moved to action? Can't he see that in order to be taken seriously he needs to act like a serious person. Maybe he doesn't care if he's taken seriously. Just puttin' on a show.

They've dismantled the water system.

You are the system Ladumba.

Black mayor.
Black police chief.
Black majority population.
Black majority city council.

What part of the above system does he want to fix?

The "system" is composed of many smaller parts, one of which is the City of Jackson. Mr. Mayor, what exactly is Jackson going to do to ensure its citizens are safe and provided with the necessary services to ensure equal opportunities are available to all the citizens? Calls for action by others ring hollow when it is you who bear responsibility for taking action to benefit your citizens and ultimately do nothing.

Too many people are saying "Black Lives Matter." Obviously they do. How many of these people have actually read the "what we believe in" section on BLM's website though?

If the Mayor believes in BLM then he needs to reduce the JPD budget. Crazy, I know. Other tidbits on BLM. It's vague, but it sounds like BLM doesn't care about two parent households which is the root of the problem in Jackson in my opinion (yes, good people come from single homes but statistically its an issue). Also, it believes Michael Brown deserves justice. Michael Brown would have been super lucky to survive that day if he was white in my opinion. You can disagree, but I think that Brown goes against MLK's content of character vs color of skin quote. Why does BLM pick people like Brown and Floyd (who pointed a gun at the belly of a pregnant lady), and not people like the guy on Georgia coast? Are they trying to piss off white people?

BLM was started by three people from the Southwestern US, and Colin K seems like their biggest well-known supporter in my opinion (a guy who got paid 6 or 7 digits to play football, and grew up in a white family). Can BLM just have a splinter group and have people in charge that know the black community better?

Floyd should have never been killed. That ex-copy is a piece of crap human being. I think everyone in the country agrees to that.

Also, much of the media won't mention that a officer is 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male then the other way around. I'm trusting the source but obviously don't know for sure. They are making it sound like this is an everyday occurrence and its not. There is a direction correlation between being mean to teachers, etc. then going out and being mean to an officer, and not understanding why you get in trouble when schools are less strict than they used to be.

William Randolph Hearst people...

On a happier note. I think it would be very sweet if the Governor came out with the Mayor and said that we are going to change the flag, and if the Mayor said he denounces New Afrika. Does he not realize how racist New Afrika is? Does anyone ever try to sit down for an interview with him and ask real questions?

This is all really sad. As Buffet says though "don't bet against America."

It's nice to see the Southeast isn't acting as crazy as these other places. Maybe we interact more (Anthony Bourdain seemed to believe that in his episode on Mississippi) and we know not to lump together a group of millions of people as Lil Wayne tried to get across to people. Or maybe we know each others flaws as a race. Or maybe we are just sick and tired of it and want to follow the Golden Rule and ignore the national media which is making us crazy.

Oh social media during an election year.

Love don't hate

God Bless America

Absolutely right! But, that means ending minority set-asides, hiring quotas, minority business designations, contract percentages, college intake quotas, etc.

I am all for having that tough conversation and reforms, but unless we truly instill fairness across the board, then it is just some form of reparations that disenfranchises and disgruntles another race/ethnicity.

GOOD, FAIR, COMPETENT, EFFECTIVE governance is mostly all that is needed.

OK. well, so far the systems that have been disabled are:

Protection of the citizens from crime
Protection of the citizens from driving on decent roads
and
Protection of the citizens from clean, potable water.

If the alleged mayor could read, perhaps he would stop flapping his gums and get to work on these problems, rather than, say, the possible climate apocalypse?

That might involve less preening and pontificating and getting down to work.

Shut down the PD for a week and see how things go. Be fun watching the citizens and Mayors staff doing accident reports, Assaults, shootings, Murder Investigations and patrol. Intervening in Domestic Violence cases, etc. As one other writer stated, popcorn optional.

It's called FOCUS. I have to congratulate Mr. Lumumba on his powerful ability to focus his attention where he wants it, no matter what. Jackson has become a virtual slaughterhouse every weekend and young people don't respect ANY of the institutions of authority. Many of these institutions are now headed by black people. Not that it matters. It's all systemic. It's all racist. Nothing has changed. He's the mayor but nothing has changed. His focus on the "real" issues is awesome.

Remember Carolyn Temple?

Baby Chok doesn't want to fix the system, and he doesn't care if Jackson's safe.....because it's not his fault. It's someone else's fault. It's ALWAYS someone else's fault. His sole way of "governing" this city is through projection. Someone else MUST be blamed.

In the mean time, it's clear to me the goal of him and the others all across this nation: they want to get PAID! You wanna see what that would look like? This is from 2003. Bear any semblance to what you'd expect today? "Many truths are said in jest!"

10:12 and 10:13

Systems and institutions are words for the tools of government.

Our systems and institutions aren't working well and a re-examination and reform is needed. Some of that reform could involve re-visiting times when they functioned better and changes that didn't work. Some of that would be realizing that what was changed wasn't changed in effective ways.

An example that I hope everyone would consider is that we " threw out the baby with the bathwater" on mental illness so that it's impossible for families to protect vulnerable members with Alzheimer's from predator's or the public from the dangerously mentally ill.

We could have kept a "neighborhood" element to education that would maintain community support for a school without busing every damn kid.

In other words, we could have been rational and practical and not given in to emotionalism and the voices of those like Geraldo Rivera who did the superficial 20/20 piece for his own recognition. He failed to note or notice that we were helping a tiny minority at the expense of the majority when protecting that minority was easily accomplished with new regulations, not a sweeping vague law.

Anonymous said...

Well that leaves no doubt as to how the Mayor really feels toward law enforcement officers

Why not? What does Antar have to lose? Who is he accountable to? Only himself. If he wants to pursue Utopia with unproven revolutionary theories that will probably fail, why not? Anything done in the name of "fighting systemic racism" is obviously acceptable, so give it a shot. Who does he have to satisfy? The people of Jackson? Those who can't refugee out of Jackson will get all their satisfaction from attacking those who already have escaped Jacktown and then citing "systematic oppression" for their problems. Antar has no liability. So why not? Free the Land!

"dismantle the systems"

"build institutions'

That's some of the goofiest gibberish I've heard this little Mayor say.

But in all honesty, I do support him for his Climate Change Task Force.
After all, a little rain on I-220 is much more dangerous than his constituents getting killed from random gunshots on ________. ( Insert whatever Jackson street name).

Who does Chuk think he’s fooling? I love how he presents himself as “one of the people, for the people” yet lives in the GATED neighborhood across from Covenant Pres Church AND has a JPD patrolman sitting outside the gate 24/7. Can “the people” explain to me how he represents y’all?? I’m waiting.

5:19 If Jackson is to maintain it's ruling class there must be safe enclaves for them to live otherwise they will have to govern remotely. That has already happened in many of our legislative and judicial districts. Mr. Lumumba is simply trying to stay IN Jackson as long as he can. Really.

Anonymous said...

The only place left in Jackson worth protesting or looting is The District and maybe Highland Village area. Otherwise all the good shit is in the burbs and they won't hesitate to shoot looters.

If mentioned Mayor Choke to anyone outside Jackson they would reply, "Who?"
Even if they had heard one of his uninspired campus speeches.

Anonymous said...

. . . says the mayor of a city that is more than 80% black. (You're out of excuses, big shot. It's time to actually govern.)

Piss and moan all you want. He is the heir apparent to Bennie Thompson’s congressional seat when Benny finally gives it up. God help us.

Anonymous said...

Regardless of who runs for mayor in Jackson, this idiocy is what the voters want. Then they will complain that nothing is being done, lay blame somewhere else, never taking responsibility.... wait this seems familiar

Anonymous said...

He may think he is the heir apparent but he won't win the Delta in the primary and Jackson's ability to control is district vote has been on the wane for a long time.

Can we have Yarber back? Remember when Yarber paddled/spanked that intruder? That was great.

Priester works too.

Crap gimme a fourth grader at St. Andrew's before the current Mayor.

June 5, 2020 at 8:16 PM You said it. I have been saying the same thing almost since the day Baby Chock took office. Mayor of Jackson is merely a stepping stone to the big time. He could care less what happens in Jackson. He can't wait to get on the national stage.

Jackson is lost, and never coming back.

Anonymous said...

8:42 Don't be so sure. Name one Mayor of Jackson who moved to higher office. It's always been a dead end job. It should be now more than ever.

Jerry Mander said...

75 year old Willie Simmons has a better shot at Bennie's job than this guy, but he'll be 80 or so when Bennie drops dead (morbid obesity) in office. Don't put it past Espy to run, residence notwithstanding.

Antar's skinny jeans won't fly in the Delta.

"Name one Mayor of Jackson who moved to higher office."

That's easy.

Dale Danks.

As a Madison Municipal Judge, he has much more power than he did back in the day when he was a Jackson Mayor.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
