Pissing It All Away

Ole Miss literally tried to piss away the Egg Bowl last night.... and succeeded in making itself the Bulldogs' bitch.

Credit: Business Insider

Ole Miss Head Football Coach Matthew Luke said "that is not who we are."  Um, Coach, the same thing happened two years ago in the Egg Bowl.  Remember Metcalf's little stunt?

Maybe, Coach Luke,  this is exactly who you are.   Your players obviously didn't get the message last year nor this year that such play would not be tolerated.

We all know what you-know-who would have done to a player that pulled this little stunt.  Better yet, everyone knows that the player wouldn't have done it in the first place if he was on you-know-who's team. Perhaps Coach Luke should borrow a page from Coach Pruitt:

Quarterback has played much better since then, hasn't he?

What would be a good meme for what Moore did last night? Suggest away in the comments.

Couldn’t have happened to a finer group of folks. I like some media outlets saying it cost them the game. No, the land sharks were never in the lead and a bogus pass interference call set up the drive that would have tied the game and sent it into OT.

Side note: they sure are preachy on social media about giving the kid a break. Speaking of breaks, the year metcalf did it and they broke Fitz’s ankle and they guy laid in the endzone smiling and waving they sure posted it for all the world to see thinking it was funny. Luke gave metcalf a cheat bump on the sidelines. Moore was wearing some belt or chain or something after his antics. Strange how after a loss we are supposed to forgive and forget. The NCAA got it right when they said “lack of institutional control”.

Just wondering where our Ole Miss "leghumper" poster is tonight? Cause your team got humped, son. And not in the leg. I guess it's karma.

And I wonder why OM doesn't get another investigation since AP photos put out a picture of Luke "howling" at the start of the game, and this is a repeat of 2017. How classy, Ole Miss.

Yes, it IS exactly who you are.

Yep kids do dumb things. They do them because they give no thought to the consequences of their actions. His actions probably cost his school it’s fans and his team mates the opportunity to win the game. Yea it’s just a football game but he and his teammates spent hours working their ass off for several months. I don’t think it was a spur of the moment thing. I feel sure he remembered Metcalfes performance and thought if I get the chance I’m going to give a repeat performance. A coach owes it to the school, fans and players to make sure every player understands that behavior of that type will not be tolerated and the consequences will be significant.

Ole Miss is third-class at everything. The donors are freakin dumbasses who believe its fine to be known as nothing more than a party school. I have nothing intelligent to say about this. That Moore kid acted just like he wanted to and showed who he really is. It is embarrassing to the State of Mississippi.

His apology tweet claimed "This doesn't describe me as a person" Well I hate to tell him that actions describe you not words. Same goes for Luke after the game defending him. That's the problem. They all defended him.

And last nite social media features Moore being embraced by and walked out of the venue by none other than Coach Luke's wife, as if to say, It's OK Honey...You're forgiven...here, let me enable you and your behavior. People are posting that 'she's his momma and is there to comfort him'. Well, does a momma embrace and comfort her child when he gets a DUI or fails a test or throws spitballs in class and gets suspended? Or does she admonish and punish him?

I've never (until now) heard of a football rule that allows a coach to 'choose' whether to apply a penalty prior to the extra point attempt or on the following kick-off. According to a television reporter, that's exactly what happened and Moorhead chose the former.

Anonymous said...

In addition to how this classless move affected the game, it also occurred on a nationally televised event. The image of the entire state, which likely can't get any worse, was just further cemented at the bottom. Ole Miss needs to get its collective act together.

Anonymous said...

I'm very happy to see the officials demonstrating no tolerance for unsportsmanlike conduct.

This is very important, because it provides a lesson of consequences for bad behavior. I hope the players feel the sting real good and we don't see this kind of shit again.

Kid probably would be celebrated if the kicker had made the shot.

Anonymous said...

@620 for sure! When metcalf did it they were posting all over Facebook. Now it’s “kid make mistakes” and “we should show grace”. BFS! If they would have won we’d be seeing that for months.

“This doesn’t define us”....yes Luke, it does. It’s happened twice under your watch. Luke absolutely despises MS State as a former player(so I’ve heard). I feel confident that Luke encourages this type of behavior.

We are a leaderless, classless, and shameless university that has totally lost its way. My Ole Miss lost something Thanksgiving night. I think it was our dignity. Very, very sad time to be an Ole Miss Rebel.

Moore was not someone just leaving a bar after an evening of drinking who does something stupid while intoxicated. And I do not believe the excuse he was caught up in the emotions of the moment. He no doubt thought the Metcalf stunt was pretty cool and wanted he media attention as well as social media presence. This insanely crude and stupid act was clearly premeditated. There is no place on a football team at any level for this level of selfishness.

While I wish this young man the best in life, the Egg Bowl act will always be on the minds of prospective employers when he finds himself looking for a job; and yes, NFL teams think about this stuff also. Finally, the really sad thing is that what Moore did actually defines who he is. Not who he is not. Excuses don’t change character.

Anonymous said...

If I had been the coach the kid would have needed to find his own way home cause he's not going back with the team

Anonymous said...

A few comments:
1 - this kid did not get caught up in the moment; this was a planned stunt.
2 - he was not concerned about his team or the game; his only thought was the attention he would receive for scoring a touchdown.
3 - this is the same emotional reaction we see everyday in South and West Jackson; the only difference was it was at Scott Field.
4 - and sorry Coach Luke, this DOES define who you are, but not just Ole Miss but most every other team in the nation. A significant number of these kids would never set foot on a college campus if not for their athletic ability. They are hired for what they can do, not for who they are.

Has anyone noticed that Elijah Moore, Matt Luke and Keith Carter all apologized to the Ole Miss community but didn't have a word of apology to Mississippi State for the second such display in successive trips to Starkville?

6:20 is right. Had the PAT been successful and OM won in overtime, this act would be celebrated.

8:00 a.m., I noticed that the apology was directed only to Ole Miss community.p, and thought it odd not to include an apology to the MSU community as well. Apparently the same PR people who handled the Freeze debacle so well are still in charge. Tone deaf does not begin to describe Ole Miss’s public relations department.

How is Luke going to explain to his prized recruits that there are some things a football player cannot do at Ole Miss? Well at least not when they are visiting Starkville. That could be a problem. He'll make it work... as always.

I am a '69 graduate and lifelong supporter of MSU. BUT...I'll concede that I cheer for Ole Miss in every game you play EXCEPT when it's against MSU. I hope you feel the same way toward my school.

I think your comments are the most reasonably stated of all and you really do get to the bottom line. Sadly, you are on target about what Ole Miss has lost over the years since you and I were on our respective campuses as students. Ever more sadly, you are completely right about a loss of dignity. It's sad for the player, the coach, the team and the University. Worse, it's sad for our state. We just didn't need another reason for others to look down on us.

To use a well-worn phrase, I feel your pain. I think we ALL feel it in one way or another, regardless of where our school loyalty lies.

Thank you for your very intelligent post.

Well, on one end of the spectrum we have wealthy parents who are caught up in the college recruitment scandal which has included some notable celebrities. On the other end we have the good ol’ boy SEC donors and sponsors who pay for tutors, moms a new house and car all the while asking the donors to have $10,000 to $15,000 per year of expendable income to shower these so called athletes who have so WRONGLY obtained scholarships that a well deserving student should have gotten, who can ACTUALLY read at the proper grade level when they graduate and can perform advanced mathematical equations. But, we won’t go there. You raise a child up in the environments these students come from and this is what you get. Some (a great many) students never have the chance that has been given to these athletes who will never really advance farther than college athletics. Hence, this is why we need vocational technical training to weed out the ones who really don’t belong or need to set foot on a college campus due to various reasons. It has nothing to do with being racist because the majority of college football players are black, not white.

There were two previous posters from the class of ‘68 UM and ‘69 MSU who had a lot to say and we need to listen. This culture that has been brought forth is dirty, nasty, ILLEGAL (because you stole taxpayer funds to send a student to a college for underlying motives, not because they earned it), unfair in more ways than you can ever imagine. I sent my kids to college out of my back pocket instead of them getting student loans so they will have a better life. I made that choice so it angers me to see a kid who obviously will not add to society but detract from it get so much attention. But, that is life. Gotta love it, huh?

Ole Miss will never be more than they are now. They lost it all when they took away Col Reb and Hugh Freeze. The college is a joke and to think back in the day it was the most sought after school to attend. Now it’s just a liberal, left wing money pit. Wish these donors would wake up and see they won’t ever be worth a crap.

I think it should be renamed the thug bowl. I went to one of these schools and am ashamed as not only does it reflect negatively on these teams but also the state of Mississippi. No team that consistently ranks in the top 10 have poor players and couches. At the first of the season the networks put a camera on rich rod so all of America could see his m act like a fool and joe mo saying that you would have to drag his ass out. What class. Great recruiting material for other teams. Also there was one college game televised on Thanksgiving night so it brings extra attention to not only prospective athletes but also students and visitors to the Great State of Mississippi.

We don’t have a great reputation as a state and this just verifies what some people think.

I’m truly surprised that Moore got a flag for his behavior, but glad he did.

I don’t agree with the actions of Moore, but the more telling actions came after his little stunt. He was immediately celebrated by his coach and his team as he was given the belt that is apparently an honor. The press release made no apology to MSU & their fans. Basically, it was just an “I’m sorry it cost us” apology which is meaningless. What an awful example. It’s about more than just the actual game and we have lost sight of that in this “win at all costs” world.

Anonymous said...

Carter, Luke and Moore better wake up and apologize to those who watched the game on ESPN, Mississippi State, the State of Mississippi, and the Southeastern Conference.

Two years ago, Luke celebrated with DK Metcalfe after he did his urination stunt. There was no apology then. Apologizing for Moore's stunt to only the Ole Miss alums and fans is empty and meaningless.

Moore planned this and would be smart in transferring. This will stay with him as long as he is at Ole Miss. This has made Ole Miss the laughing stock of college football.

REWIND said...

Several points:

1) The belt that was wrapped around him (and State has a similar one) is something that the sidelines guys wrap around a player coming off the field after a great play. Figure that out.

2) 10:57 throws out a red hearing about "MSU cheats too". This has nothing to do with cheating. Immature attempt to join the conversation and deflect.

3) Two years ago, Thanksgiving night, Starkville, same field, same two teams - Metcalf pulled the same stunt, hiked his leg and pretended to piss like a dog, making fun of the MSU mascot. As he came off the field, and I witnessed it up close, Luke gave Metcalf a big 'chest bump', mid air. That's condoning poor behavior and showing the world the thug Luke is. He encouraged a repeat performance. This was also the game the MSU QB was targeted and his leg broken. Got a fist-pump from Luke.

Sorry 11:19 but college will always bend over backwards for the cash. Whether it's the spoiled brat kids of rich donors or the big money producing jocks your kids are going to play second-fiddle. Don't blame the jocks for "taking your kids place". If you have no real money, your kid had on place anyway!

Anonymous said...

5:52, Ironically the rule used to be that penalties between touchdowns and PATs were always enforced on the attempt. The coaches lobbied the NCAA to change the rule so that the offended team has the choice to take it on the attempt or enforce it on the kickoff.

99 times out of 100, you concede the PAT and back them up for the kick, hoping to get better field position, but in this case you take it on the PAT - it eliminates the possibility of going for two (I really think they were going to do it) and gives the PAT a little more pressure. It worked out perfectly for MSU in this case.

I'm an Ole Miss alum and I am embarrassed about this. I have ignored the culture shift that my university has been on because I didn't want to believe it. That was, in a sense, the most selfish thing I have ever seen on a football field. They knew it would be penalized because it was two years ago when Metcalf did it. To do it in that situation and then run to the sideline and grab the NWO belt was selfish, classless and probably cost the team a win.

I have two boys who look up to that Ole Miss team. When this incident occurred, I had a chance to look into their eyes. They were confused, disheartened and ultimately disappointed.

Anonymous said...

Ole Miss will never learn. They are all about gimmicks and false hope.
Tag lines, sideline props. Mascot changes and the like do not make a great program- integrity and character does.

When it was clear that all “ institutional control” had been lost- they should have completely torn it down from the top like SMU and Penn State and installed a complete new administration from the top down — chancellor, AD then coach. Instead ole miss did the opposite, letting little pockets of mediocrity to remain. Then Ford Dye and crew committed the fatal error with the good ole boy chancellor. Ole Miss will remain mediocre with only long shot hope to peddle to their fans.

To 7:38 '...Sixty thousand rednecks ringing "cowbells" is much more of an embarrassment to the State of Mississippi on any given Saturday, than one dude symbolically pissing on the Oktibbeha County student section...'
Not at all. I will try to explain, but given the history in Oxford you may not be able to understand this. Years ago the UM folks attempted to insult us by calling us 'cow college'. We turned it around on them. Embraced their insult and adopted cow bells. My father studied agriculture at MSU but I know nothing about it. But I'm proud of cowbells. Then there was the practice of insulting Starkville. It was backwards, nothing to do, worst SEC town, etc. Again, we embraced the insult and came up with 'Starkvegas' to show our pride. Maybe you don't like the town. We don't care. We do. Ole Miss on the other hand had a unique culture and personna. Something they could have been proud of. But when the political correctness crowd came after them they folded big time. Canned their mascot, flag, fight song, and most of all traded their mascot for two or three of the dumbest mascots in the history of sports. No place is perfect. Everywhere has something to be proud of. MSU embraces who it is. If you don't, fine. Go elsewhere. Ole Miss runs from itself. Consequently, they don't know who they are anymore and no one else does either. It's sad.
None of this has anything to do with the penalty. Despite all the history of bad blood in the game, the Commish had called for things to be cleaned up. It was a new year, a new game. Zero unsportsmanlike penalties until the final seconds. Both sides were playing hard but clean. This kid didn't get the message. He was clueless. This is the Commish's wet dream come true. What could possibly do more to clean up this game that a classless act costing a team a chance at a win?

I will never understand how players like these make it in said schools, or don't get kicked off the team or fail out freshmen year. What super easy courses are these schools offering?

Do people really enjoy cheering for these people at their school if they aren't doing crap academically? If we took the Rhodes or Millsaps football teams and told them they never have to do work for class, and put 150 grams of protein in front of them every day they would probably be pretty darn good to (and wouldn't do dumb crap).

Maybe we need to start making all college seniors take the GRE or Praxis or something and see if all the colleges are actually teaching the students something.

Also, what was Luke's wife doing after the game?

What D K Metcalfe and Elijah Moore did were rude and distasteful acts that they should both be embarrassed about. Unfortunately young people and often older people as well do stupid things that reflect badly on themselves, their family and the institutions they may represent. When they've been surely jaded and embarrassed by them? Because that's what the Oxford cult does.....never showing any shame or remorse while claiming they're better than everyone else. Please - don't do that to your boys. The natural course of things should be your boys saying when they're adults, "Not sure why on earth Dad was such an OM fan."

The fact that there are people still longing for the Confederate flag, Col reb and all the other vestiges of the schools racist past (and present) is sickening and doubles down in a lot of what’s wrong with UM. Those folks need to be purged for sure.

Yeah 8:42, so insecure we laugh at ourselves (and lightweights like you) as we ring our "redneck" cowbells. HAHAHAHA.....

The ring of a cowbell is similar to the Ping, Ping, Ping of a BMW when daddy's little girl up at TSUN forgets to get the oil changed.

MSU Graduate here... First, there are some truly wonderful and truly terrible people who have attended or support both MSU and Ole Miss. Second, it seems as though we've heard this "sad time to be a Rebel" dirge a few times in recent history. Does anyone know, really, who is the problem at Ole Miss? How did this culture grow, and what can they do to correct is? Because, as much as I LOVE seeing a good old rebel @ss whoopin', and as much as i LOATHE even smelling the Ole Miss cool-aid when they're doing well, I know it's not a zero-sum game. It may be more fun to watch the city burn...but it don't know that it makes the entire atmosphere better for everyone.

10:45; In regards to your mention of the Ole Miss 'Culture', look again at the Athletics Director's comment: Keith Carter, Athletics Director continued, "We will always be grateful for his leadership, particularly from a cultural standpoint".

Exactly what is this mystery culture being preserved and spoken of? It damned sure is not powder blue helmets and grey pants.

@11:56 EXACTLY. Oxford preaches about culture.....but they have ZERO idea what the hell they're even trying to say because they're so drunk on their own kool aid.

Oxford doesn't have any "culture"....it's only a "cult"....ask the half of the college not involved in the Greek system.....that side of the school is nothing but a hangover from the 70s,80s, and 90s that tries to perpetuate the special fun they had back before political correctness put them in their place....but they still don't care. It creeps out a little at a time.....

Old Miss or New Miss? Time will tell.....

Seems it's very easy to get the State folks in a frenzy . . . especially when the Ole Miss folks start making outlandish, but half-way true comments.

Calm down MSU readers.

Ya'll are letting the Land Sharks jerk Bully's leash.

But face reality, both teams are in the SEC West.

Neither of ya'll will dominate the West anytime soon.

I never watched Jerry Lewis again after his vulgar comment about Mississippi on national TV. This vulgar display at a major sporting event deserves all the disgrace that can be placed on the perpetrator and therefore the team. Vulgarity in sports is unbecoming and unnecessary and I am glad the penalty was called. We are crumbling as a society and this is an excellent example of why. It was indecent and uncalled for. Where is honor?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
