The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued the following press release.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol will kick off the 2017 Memorial Day Travel Enforcement Period with a safety awareness initiative titled, “Drive to Survive.” The enforcement period and initiative will begin Friday, May 26, at 6 p.m. and conclude Monday, May 29, at midnight. Motorists are encouraged to have a “Drive to Survive” mindset and make safe driving along with responsible decisions top priority while traveling this weekend. With the anticipation of increased holiday traffic, all available troopers will be assigned saturation patrols in an effort to maximize visibility and reduce traffic crashes. Safety checkpoints will also be established to prevent impaired driving and promote seatbelt usage. In 2016, MHP investigated 132 crashes with 2 fatalities and made 164 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems throughout the period.

I see them on the Trace a lot now. Not sure if they are patrolling or just cruising along to the next buffet.
You see MHP on the Trace? Congratulations, next you can see if you can find Waldo.
All three of my DUIs are because of MHP, my latest coming memorial day last year. I'm not trying to excuse my bad decisions, but I don't think it is fair for them to set up road blocks and harass people who are just trying to enjoy the holiday. If I'm not swerving or acting recklessly, what harm have I done to society?
I hope they spend the entire extended weekend checking license plates against VIN's and registrations, Drivers License's; insurance papers would be nice, and bust the heads of some ILLEGAL operators that might be tempted to leave their baby sleeping in the back of a running vehicle while they run in to a grocery store. THIS is their chance. Do it. Make a statement.
@3:28 - just don't do it in Canton. Wouldn't want to upset the ACLU.
Do they make a bumper sticker?
Drive to Survive
May 23, 2017 at 3:17 PM = Fake comment or that of a Fool
3:17 -- snowflake? All three are the FAULT of MHP? None of it was your fault? Not fair to catch you because you might have been too into enjoying the holiday to think thru where and how you were driving?
3:17-- Your attempt at justification would be not as bad after 1 DUI. THREE? Do you even have a license still?
MHP is patrolling the Natchez Trace and issuing tickets. They do have authority on the Trace. There have been several articles on the news about this recently.
2:26...I'm not interested in finding Waldo for you; however, I do know the MHP has no initial jurisdiction on the Natchez Trace and their normal routine does not call for them to ride that venue. But, it's a nice drive to a number of eating establishments between Natchez and Tupelo.
Drive to survive? What does that even mean?? I wonder who Warren Strain paid to come up with that bull shit.
But, YAY for the troopers - bring on the grant money for overtime, callback, fake tickets and late night rendezvous at the weight station! When are the assholes who stole our tax money going to be fired, stripped of their pensions, charged, and required to pay that money back??
MHP is a joke!
MHP does not have the authority and should NOT be issuing tickets on the Trace. If they attempt to pull you over, do not stop. Drive straight to your attorney's office and dare them to come after you.
Considering MHP's history of sexual assault, female drivers would be wise to stay in their vehicle, call the sherrif, and do not exit the vehicle until a member of the sheriff department is there to supervise. There's no telling what your typical MHP officer will do to a woman who is alone in the middle of the night. Actually there is, because it happens frequently.
C'mon 5:48, its hard to keep all that machismo bottled up - I've heard that troopers can't even make it out of a stairwell without some harlot tryin' to give it up.
There have been several articles on the news about this recently.
Link?
With every catch slogan comes a nice Federal Grant, if a state plays along.
@6:23. Machoism? You mean steroids? MHP is full of losers who were made fun of their entire lives, and now are trying to make up for it by hitting the juice, carrying a gun, and raping women. MHP is the most pathetic excuse of a law enforcement agency in the nation.
@6:33
I can't copy a link, but go to Facebook and search for "Natchez Trace Parkway" and you will see the story. Below is a copy of the text.
"Can Mississippi Highway Patrol Write Tickets on the Natchez Trace Parkway?
We are often asked can local law enforcement and Mississippi Highway Patrol write tickets on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The answer is yes, yes they can.
...And so can Rangers...Rangers, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Clinton Police Department, and Ridgeland Police Department are working together to reduce speeds and prevent traffic collisions on the Natchez Trace Parkway. They will be out on the Parkway enforcing speed limits, looking for aggressive drivers and enforcing seatbelt laws in and around the Jackson/Ridgeland areas. The purpose of this cooperative patrol is to prevent traffic collisions. So buckle up, slow down, put your phone down, and drive safe."
There was also a story by one of the local news outlets recently. I will continue to look for a link to it.
There are several situations where you could justify MHP troopers cruising the Natchez Trace. Routine patrol is NOT one of them. There have NOT been several articles about that recently. That's bullshit.
With everybody and his brother bemoaning trooper shortage, one trooper working multiple entire counties and the need for trooper schools, there is no way in hell they are being assigned to patrol a Federal Parkway.

Does this mean that when the troopers are driving Phil to a game in Starkville, at 88 mph, they will now be on The Trace instead of Highway 25? Cool....
@5:38 They have jurisdiction anywhere in the state in MS. They were given that authority back in the 80's when they went from Highway Patrolman to State Trooper. I've heard the only place you can escape their jurisdiction in state is on an Indian reservation. So unless the AG has an office at the Pearl River Resort it would do you little good to run there.
Very obvious this must be the fired from MHP or couldn't hack the Trooper school anger therapy forum. Rock on guys, these are entertaining reads!
That they have the authority to ticket you on The Trace is not the issue. The issue is the claim that they are assigned patrol duty on The Natchez Trace. They are not. An exception would be the motorcycle trooper who was riding along behind a large group of bicycle riders during an event some months back. This is not 'routine patrol' but is a special assignment, like setting up a road block at the Trace entrance just off the 55 north ramp at Ridgeland. In that situation you have MHP, Trace Rangers, Game and Fish and Local LE.
Nor does the Mississippi legislature have the authority to regulate who can or cannot patrol a Federal Parkway. And while a Ridgeland or Madison cop can certainly write a ticket on The Trace section that's within the city limits, they are not assigned patrol duty on The Trace. They may use The Trace for convenience and necessity, but, they aren't patrolling it.
And you won't find MDWFP officers writing speeding tickets on The Trace since they are not authorized to use radar.
"5:38 They have jurisdiction anywhere in the state in MS. They were given that authority back in the 80's when they went from Highway Patrolman to State Trooper."
Exactly! Whether the MHP are selected to regularly patrol the NTP is NOT the issue. While the NTP is NOT a norm of their patrols, they do have statewide jurisdiction except for the Native American reservations, is my understanding, and I have seen MHP on occasion on the NTP. If you're doing something, they can ticket you for, no seatbelt, speeding, etc., and they catch you on the NTP, you CAN be issued a citation by the MHP. They ARE on the NTP although I'll admit I've don't see them as much, I'm actually seeing the Rangers more, as I travel that parkway, frequently! My question is, does the Clinton PD or JPD, or Ridgeland PD, run radar on the NTP?
@ 8:13 --- says the trooper trying to defend whatever the hiway patrol has become....
Go to school, a real school, not "Patrol School" maybe get your GED, have those charges expunged, fix your credit (we know it sucks) and IF you can pass my company's background check, MAYBE I'll put you to work slinging boxes on my loading dock.
Does anyone remember the neon DRIVE SAFELY sign that used to be on the hill in South Jackson?
@9:01 yea you still mad
Yay for armed agents of the state announcing that they're going to be out in force! But do us a favor, gents, and admit that your aim is revenue generation, not public safety. If this were not the case, you wouldn't have troopers running 90+ mph on various roads while not running lights...I see very little concern for public safety when *they're* the ones with the lead foot.
I'm honestly not sure if Mr. Three DUIs was being facetious or not, but he makes a point: if a person is not driving recklessly, what harm have they done? Checkpoints strike me as fundamentally wrong; if someone is driving erratically, get 'em off the road. If you can manage to down a pint of Old Crow and a couple of Old Milwaukee tall boys and still drive better than most of the soccer moms that attempt to kill me every morning...well, bully for you, please continue about your business. But this won't happen because the state exists to perpetuate itself, and I can't help but figure DUI arrests/citations are a money-maker.
How angry does one have to be to come to every MHP related article on this blog and spew hate and discontent. What an uneventful life that must be.
9:32 - not mad, just a successful business-owning taxpayer who gets pissed every time the government wastes our money on shit that doesn't do a damn bit of good (and yes grant money is our money too - it's NOT free).
People are going to speed and drink and drive no matter how visible the highway patrol is, I'd like to see how many wrecks are caused by folks jamming on their brakes when they see a trooper.
For all you Star Wars haters, this is appropriate if nothing else:

@9:32. You keep on believing that. That is why MHP is in the sorry shape it's in. When the legislature wakes up and takes MHP out from under the personnel board you will be in for a wake up call.
The legislature should mandate an unannounced drug screening for all of DPS - that should take care of at least 20% of the workforce. (hit me up on Craigslist if any of you troopers wanna buy some clean urine)

http://mshistorynow.mdah.state.ms.us/articles/311/paving-the-trace Ranger Dollinger at NPS needs to read this. He'd find that the Trace was constructed using interstate highway funds, not park funds. The original Trace was gobbled up by county and state roads, and the Congressional intent behind the Federal aid was for faster interstate roads, albeit with a lower speed design than nowadays. At the time of the construction, the Trace was actually deemed a higher speed road than county roads, being limited access and paved (i.e. primary roads). Thus, his opinion that it should not be used by cars other than for vacation is just ludicrous. Typical Park Ranger BS. Now, he's dragging MHP into it on a daily basis. The "Highway" portion of their mission lets them in under concurrent jurisdiction, but he's stretching the MOAs legally. Love to see them enforce the actual size and weight restrictions on large RVs. Yet, he doesn't. And, he wants it to be a bike path, which is precluded by its design as a parkway (i.e. for cars, to separate truck vs. car vs. pedestrian and bike traffic.) All documented. His revisionist history is wrong. Scenic easements do not convey a 25 mph mindset. This is a road for passenger cars meant to be used. Not a park. Read the article about the whole intent. Just like JMAA using Federal military and CAA/FAA funds to build a cash cow and then insisting it's city property only, it's yet another assertion of power not backed in the money and paper trail. It, like the Interstate system of the 50s, bypassed major metro areas for ease of purchase and construction, but, "if you build it, they will come" is the natural result, and the use in the metro areas of the Trace is consistent with use of parkways in many other states, even in metro DC and NYC. He needs to be counseled on his role. "You don't own the road" Ranger.
