Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away today. He was 79 years old. Several Mississippi leaders issued the following statements:
Governor Phil Bryant:
"Justice Scalia was the greatest legal mind
of our time and will be missed by all who love this nation and what it
stands for. On a personal note, I will miss our duck hunts in the
Mississippi Delta. He enjoyed our great state
and its people. Mississippi has lost a friend."
Secretary of State Gilbert Hosemann:
I had the privilege to be with Justice Scalia when he was duck hunting in the Mississippi Delta. We
have lost an intellectual icon and a good man. Those of us who believe in the Constitution lost our strongest champion. Lynn
and I are sick over this news.”
Senator Roger Wicker:
Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves:
One of my fondest personal memories of Justice Scalia was a turkey hunting trip to Warren County, Mississippi, during one of his many visits to our beautiful state," Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said. "Justice Scalia was one of the most consequential legal minds to serve our country during my lifetime. In addition to being one of our most brilliant and distinguished Supreme Court Justices, he was extraordinarily generous, humble, and engaging. At a time when it is often difficult to find someone to admire in Washington, Justice Scalia is right up there with the guy who appointed him, President Reagan, as someone for whom I have great respect and admiration. Elee and I pray for his family and our country as we mourn this tragic loss of one of America's legal giants

Scalia was one of the greatest justices of our lifetimes. Pray for our country. The wackos will be in full control of the supreme court. This is very scary.
just an fyi you got a typo, you don;t need to publish this post

Secretary of State Gilbert Hosemann:
FYI, you are out to JJ lunch.
Justice Scalia was an honorable, principled, and courageous jurist. Our country will miss him. I thank God we had him while we did.
Two months ago, Scalia endorsed the separate but equal -- return to Jim Crow laws -- doctrine of Plessey v Ferguson.
This is a great jurist?
So the "wackos will be in full control of the Supreme Court"? The wackos are already in control. These wackos say that corporations are people and there's no limit on political spending. Great jurists?
according to a Fox News story on 4-8-04, two Hattiesburg journalists had to erase a speech given by Justice Scalia at Wm Carey. it was a speech about the Constitution. I guess he wasn't a fan of the Bill of Rights so much..
I'm not going to speak ill of the dead- he had friends and family that will miss him greatly.
Scalia was a complex man and like most all humans, imperfect but with many redeeming qualities.
I don't think his rulings that eminent domain can be used to take land for private use, that corporations are citizens, and that intent never matters will tarnish, over time, his legacy as a jurist.
7:23 and 7:58 you don't get sarcasm or this site.
Meanwhile, our esteemed preacher/mayor tweets:
"Wow! Scalia has died... #justice #SupremeCourt"
Then got into an argument on twitter about how he meant the use of #justice in his tweet. We all know what it means Reverend Tony. You feel like #justice was served by his death. So Jackson it hurts.
Please provide evidence that Scalia supported a return to Jim Crow laws.
You libs surely should be celebrating his life, if for no other reason than that he shot Cheney.
8:25 you don't know what you are talking about.
Wish Yarber would spend as much time on his job as he does on Twitter.
Was Scalia in favor of the Costco in Ridgeland? I hope his death won't delay the opening.
Two indisputable facts about Scalia: (1) He was smarter by an order of magnitude than anyone criticizing him in internet comment sections today. (2) He knew that his job was to interpret the Constitution, not to impose ideas of social progress by judicial fiat.
Leftists were obsessed with Scalia precisely because they knew, if they sat down in a quiet room and discussed the merits of any of his opinions, he would politely destroy them.
Bottom line: When Scalia told you that the Constitution does not mandate your policy preferences, he was right. Deep down, you know this. And that's why you hate him.
I bet that the senate confirms an Obama selection by the end of the year. The go alone to get along republicans which contain mississippi senators cannot hold up to the pressure. They have caved on every important issue and this will not be any different. Wicker will trot out to say that they really had no choice.
If they do @11:40 it will be the end of the Republican Party.
11;40 - keep running the crap out of your hating mouth. It will probably give your other end a break. I'll take your bet. There will not be a confirmation of a new member of SCOTUS unless, of course, Obama proposes a truly middle of the ground appointee. Which, of course, he will not. The Senate will receive Obama's proposed appointee, study the issue, and leave it on his desk to take with him when he finally vacates the White House.
Scalia was EXACTLY what his name warned us he would be.
Still waiting on the 'jim crow' confirmation. tic toc....
The guy was solid. Avid outdoorsman and statesman doing what he loved
Justice Scalia was a great man and a great Justice. May he rest in peace!
You libs surely should be celebrating his life, if for no other reason than that he shot Cheney.

I'm a fan of both Cheney and Scalia, but that's funny!
R.I.P. Scalia
God help the U.S.A.
Funny, but wrong. They hunted together but Cheney shot somebody else, not Scalia.
=================================================
"Scalia was EXACTLY what his name warned us he would be."
Antonin? Scalia? What are you babbling about?
He served our country for w very long time.
I dont agree with him on lots if things...but I will never say he was dumb or corrupt. He was from the old school.
Funny thing is Scalia's method of interpretation would hurt Canadian Cruz on "natural born" arguments....so his being gone could help Cruz.
I don't think we can count on Sen. Wicker putting up much of a fight for putting the appointment off to next year. It's not in his DNA.
Since the new "norm" now is not to believe the first 2 or 3 proclamations in regard to the "cause of death" by the wailing and grieving family members I sure hope the Scalia family demands multiple investigations before they sue.
Brian Williams reported that Scalia shot Cheney and claimed he was a witness. I read it on the internet so you people who doubt me can just go away!
WTH, February 14, 2016 at 9:37 AM "Was Scalia in favor of the Costco in Ridgeland? I hope his death won't delay the opening."??? Single issue obsessor.
RIP, Justice Scalia. Even Justices who opposed his every opinion not only respected, but LIKED him. The world would spin a lot more smoothly if we could all take the hate out of our disagreements.
Whatever your opinion for his replacement, appointment by sitting Pres. O, or waiting for the next in office, you'd better make sure it is a precedent that you want if the situation were reversed. What is good for one is good for all.
The precedent has already been set, 1:53. Please pay attention to the 'national news' re Obama and Schumer back in 2000.
Or would you have us forget THAT precedent and set another?
5:43 Please enlighten us what precedent was set by Illinois General assembly member Barack Obama in 2000.
7:43pm...I don't know why 5:43pm said "2000", but they sure did in 2007. Look it up for yourself....November 22, 2007 speech by Schumer on the stand of the Senate democrats in relation to Bush end of term appointments.
Justice Scalia will be greatly missed.
Senators Wicker and Cochran will be told what to do by the Republican leadership and they will obediently follow. No thought, no reading of the Constitution, no conviction of right or wrong. Just what pays the most and keeps them employed the longest. The Republicans have caved on every other major issue why should this one be any different.
Scalia said that blacks do better in black schools. Fisher v Texas, December arguments. Scalia thought that blacks are clearly inferior. Jim Crow lives on.
Also, he said the civil rights case of NY Times v Sullivan was the worst decision ever by the SCOTUS. He wanted to destroy the black race.
And, he destroyed the media tapes in Hburg.
Great? Hardly. Wore a clean sheet over his head. Even at death.
