The Ridgeland Police Department issued the following statement.
Wednesday, June 2nd, approximately 9:15 pm, Ridgeland PD responded to Drury Inn located at 610 E. County Line Road related to a subject with a weapon walking through the parking lot looking into vehicles. Upon the officers’ arrival, they located and identified the person reported to the police. This subject was detained and determined to be in possession of controlled substance and in possession of a firearm while possessing a controlled substance. This subject was taken into custody and as the officers were clearing this call, a disturbance broke out in the parking lot on the southwest corner of the Drury Inn. CLARIFICATION: No firearms were discharged on this initial call for service.
RPD Officers responded to the area of the hotel parking lot to investigate the disturbance. As officers approached, a gun was fired. As a result of this gunfire, initial investigation revealed a 16 year of age male from Jackson shot a 38 year old male from Jackson. The victim was identified as the uncle of the shooter. Officers approached the scene and the juvenile fled from officers.
As a result, an RPD officer gave commands to comply. The Ridgeland PD officer discharged his firearm, and as a result, the juvenile sustained injuries. Both victims were transported to a local hospital and remain there in stable condition with non life-threatening injuries. As is routine protocol, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to investigate the shooting as an independent investigative agency. Ridgeland Police have turned this investigation over to MBI and the results of the investigation will be reported to the Madison County District Attorneys’ Office.
Any inquiries should be directed to MS Bureau of Investigation as this is an active investigation. Ridgeland PD will not be able to respond to request for information.

It looks like Jackson's social ills are moving north. The last time I stayed in Jackson it was at the same Drury Inn and a lady was shot that evening walking to the restaurant adjacent to the parking lot.
RPD Chief Neal said it best.
"Take care of your kids at home. Be parents. You birthed them, take care of them."
So many of Jackson's problems could be improved with such a simple common sense solution.
Not federal money, or grants or consultants, just parental accountability.
What do you do when there is no parent? or a mom who is outweighed by her son by 50 lbs or more?
One thing I've noticed the last few years. I'm seeing more and more juniors in the criminal dockets. I look up someone's felony history and will see same name for various cases spread out over 15-20 years. Dig into files and it turns out the files are divided among the father and son.
KF
These kids may be stronger but outweighing these "moms" I've seen by 50 lbs...c'mon man.
The most important lesson anyone has learned from this is what the Uncle learned. “Fuck around and find out”
I was in Youth Court a few years ago. Woman's son was in there. S Mother begged the court to help her, said she could do nothing with him. She actually turned him in. No way she could physically stop him. Kid actually cried a little when mama spoke. Then Stevie Turner got up there. Same thing with his mom. When she spoke, stone cold baby, already hard core. Didn't even make it a year past 18 before parchman. Didn't care.
@kingfish - A child doesn't outweigh mom by 50 lbs his/her entire life. Parenting starts at birth (if not before). If one waits to TRY to BE a parent until said child is in the next weight class...well, yes, said parents (mom AND dad) messed up and should go ahead mark themselves a failure as a parent.
Ok, the story here sounds suspect.
He was attempting to flee and was shot while fleeing? It does not sound like the LEOs had theretofore identified who/where the shots came from or if the person fleeing was any sort of threat
Media is saying that the youth was fleeing when he was shot as he did not comply with commands. Why is it ok to shoot someone who is fleeing?
80% of the kids in Jackson are from single parent homes.
The cause of this is giving welfare tax breaks to these baby mothers by the amount of kids they have.
But the Democrats gets these baby moms vote. A vicious cycle.
My best advice to you is stay far far away from Jackson.
Starkville, Oxford is booming & very safe.
Prime example of children having babies and the government paying them for every one they have. When the government steps up and cuts off the money at say two kids things might change.
Deadly force can be used against a fleeing felon if there is cause to believe that he is a threat to others.
The victim should have yelled "uncle."
Fleeing felon rule. Tennessee vs Garner. Deadly force "may not be used unless necessary to prevent the escape and the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious bodily harm to the officer or others." Thus holding a gun while fleeing presents a justified shooting.

KF, I agree with 5:41.
You try to make what you see as a reasonable argument about mama's ability to deal with a crime-laden yute. But that crime-laden yute was once a small child; grew up to be a little kid; rinse and repeat (except maybe in Jackson with no water to rinse, but still not an excuse). Once he was a big yute was too late to start trying to teach him right and wrong.
Parenting is a lifelong process - it doesn't start when mama realizes she has a young adult on her hands that no longer pays attention to her largely because she did not pay attention to him when he was little. Of course, in most cases, daddy wasn't there so it was mamas job - but she was the one that selected daddy and may or may not know who he was as the kid grew up.
whatever, mama crying to the court is like mama's crying about schools not raising their kids right. It starts at home, and it starts early. And it continues throughout. Little sympathy for your two examples of mamas that asked the courts for help - except that they turned them in and said they were a lost cause and needed to go to another house - the Big House.
Just wait until the west county line rd under the overpass is finished.
Great Job RPD. JPD could learn a thing or two from these guys. If your shoot other people, you can expect the police to shoot you. Period. Why is that hard to understand?
Good thing there's not a steak-house in the area or a whole family could be in danger.
That corner has been ground central for drug deals for years. Parties involved can jump on the interstate and be gone in short order. My wife was on Madison County grand jury 15-20 years ago and tries to avoid the area ever since.
Just waiting for them to rename West County Line (at that point) The Bennie Thompson Memorial Parkway. How fitting since his almer-motto is Tougaloo.
"RPD Chief Neal said it best..."
Yep, Neal is always anxious to walk up to a microphone and babble his opinion of swift justice and tough law enforcement. Then he goes to his office and gets back on the internet. His on-line 10-20 is usually PERS.
I bet they "ain't done nuffin" bad cops. Most of the time these shootings occur the person was walking to bible study or helping old ladies across the street.
If parents cant or will not raise their kids, the streets will be glad to.
Free birth control is the answer to the too many incapable parents issue, but the right would never go for it.
Two whole generations have been born with ZERO empathy............no conscience .....violence and death means nothing to them. Black , white , brown etc......there are millions and millions of them from 30 years down. This time in history will not end in our lifetimes and will only get worse. Our only hope is Mother Nature and she seems to be enjoying the carnage.
6:01 That's okay... as long as he gets results... and he does immediately.
A LEO discharging their firearm at a "fleeing felon" is an issue that's fraught with dangers. While it may be legal in some very focused circumstances, as well as a fitting and tactical, it's hardly ever a prudent or advisable course of action in today's world. It's a split-second decision that has about 100 ways to go sideways on you, and only 1 way to do right.
If the suspect is running away from you, a very solid case must exist for a "danger to others" before you crank off a round.
Been there, done that. Seldom works out the way you envisioned.
Not here to delve into the how or why the Jackson folks were at a motel 100' from their home city, or what all let up to the teen shooting his uncle. Or the upbringing of either.
What I'd like to know is the reasoning behind RPD shooting at the fleeing individual. Generally speaking, LE is prohibited from deadly force when trying to apprehend a fleeing suspect.
Only when the suspect is clearly armed and the officer has probable cause to believe the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious bodily injury to anyone. The PC needed for that decision to fire on the suspect is not an insignificant amount.
The use of deadly force is sometimes justified and legal in these type situations, but it's always conditional. It all depends upon the specific conditions, surroundings, and circumstances.
I see nothing wrong with the youth shooting his family members as long as no one else outside the family is harmed. It just ain’t our problem to help them with their family issues.
I’m sure someone in the family knew this fool had a gun!

Take it up with SCOTUS. To my knowledge Tennesse v Garner hasn't been reversed or amended.

Please re-read (or in this case just read) June 3, 2021 at 7:46 PM .
You shoot someone in a parking lot and then run from the police = You pose a threat of serious bodily harm to others.
Turning your back to the police before getting shot does not render you harmless. Looks to me like a lot of people got their J.D. from MDOC.
5:37 - Or MDCC up at MoHead.
Honest question, has a motive been established ?
Not trying to be funny, but we have seen soooo many times that such murders between Father/Son, Son/Father, Nephew/Uncle and such ... boils down to important issues as "use of a phone" or who ate the last piece of chicken.
If they were to receive an ass whipping early on when they did something wrong we would not have this problem. The entire problem is that there is no discipline or consequence when they do something wrong
