Tired of Jackson's water woes, the Mississippi Fairgrounds will build its own well for water service.
Jackson lost water service during the February ice storm. The water system's failure deprived some parts of Jackson of water for nearly a month. The crisis took place during the Dixie National Rodeo. Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andrew Gipson canceled several Dixie National Rodeo events due to the lack of water. One official said the fairgrounds must able to provide a stable source of water for livestock.
Construction should be completed before the end of the year and could cost up to $500,000. However, the department will save money as it will no longer pay Jackson for water service. A crew began digging a test well today.
There is one bright spot for Jackson. The fairgrounds will be able to provide water to Jackson residents if the water system fails again as it did in February or last month.

*tips hat to Commissioner Gipson. Seriously.
Chokwe Antar Lumumba, Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi
What about sewage?
Need to dig a well on the state capitol grounds.
“ The fairgrounds will be able to provide water to Jackson residents if the water system fails again”
Oh it’ll fail again. Count on it. But the state shouldn’t help since the mayor blames the state for the city being a sh*t hole
It be dry in 5 years or full of sewage from the Pearl
MDOT drilled a well around 2010 in their parking lot. I this k they capped it. The State buildings rely on water to heat/cool. Baptist added it's well around the same time.
7:04. they will pump it to a treatment plant. From there, it will go directly into the Pearl
They will tell the city how much they pumped and will pay the bill in a timely manner.
7:04 Just dump the sewage into the street. Various streets in Jackson have had to contend with that issue.
After the 2010 water crisis MDOT decided to drill its own well. They drilled it next to Hamilton Street between the street and the visitor's parking lot. You can still see where the casing cones ip out of the ground. It seems like it was at least an 8" casing so it would have been a large well. But MDOT never developed the well. They just spent all that money for nothing, but I guess that's normal for MDOT.
Wow. was this started so Steve Hutton could get clean water for his Ho’s and John’s when he was running his
Pimp’in business out of the Fairgrounds?
BTW: KF when is Pimp Steve’s trial coming up?
Anybody who ever took a dump at a state owned building at the fairgrounds knows next time to bring a blue bucket from Lowes. And if you SIT on one of those toilets, you're a fool. Can't blame this 'crap' on Jackson.
I'm sure Antar is on his second tube of Preparation H by now.
No doubt he's looking for a way to explain this on MSNBC.
(Plus looking up new words and phrases that will impress his low info base).
Commissioner Gipson is becoming my favorite State Official.
What about sewage? Gimme a break. Surface released sewage is just fine, thank you.
Bet that well cost more than half a mil. And that tall tank Andy’s talking about will be more than that! Also, who is going to provide fire protection? State have a fire station nearby???
And by the way! Don’t put “Genuine Mississippi” on a tank built by a company in Texas, Georgia, or Kentucky!!!
I'm glad Andy likes Jackson so much. Everyone else is afraid to go downtown anymore.
10:37..The entire state is divided up into fire protection districts. The fairgrounds has not been moved and will be served by the same one they were in last week. 'The State' doesn't operate fire departments.
Jackson State should do the same thing.
You wanna anger and wake up an ancient volcano? Oh I know how this movie goes.
1:40, what good is a firetruck if the city water system and fire plugs have no water?
Leave 10:37 alone. They are angry the Jacktown messiah is being exposed for the incompetent clown he really is.
This morning at 7:15 AM there was four JPD motorcycles and officers, one officer in a marked car, two unmarked SUVs and Chowkey's body guard detachment waiting outside Eastmont to take the King Mayor to today's coronation. I didn't see the red carpet but am guessing it was about to be unfurled.
@419 yes they should. They were in a desperate situation with a campus full of students and no water. Could you imagine the smell coming from the dorms dang it had to be awful
Seems like the city plan is now to do nothing and force each business or homeowner to build their own reliable source of water.
Wonder how long it will take city leaders to rewrite laws to allow them annex those.
The new Fondren development is supposedly drilling their own too. Robert St. John doesn't want a repeat Jeff Good's pizza place experience.
Jackson is a literal shitshow.
Sell tickets to witness Divining for water vs Fracking for water (Redneck Preachers vs Engineers)contest/event at the Fairgrounds.
Create an entire Fairgrounds Unregulated Knavery Autonomous Zone (FUKAZ). The sewer could be stacked to dry until plowed under as fertilizer for Fairground crops, shooting deer or grabbing greased armadillos and possums in a pen as a midway game, etc.
So, it is okay for the fairgrounds to do this, but Byram can not do this. Please explain the difference?
Good for Andy! But, how sad is it that the city can’t supply the fairgrounds with water?
Byram's issue isn't drilling a well or two, it is distribution. Tying the limited footprint at the fairgrounds into its own well is going to be quite easy.
1:40 AM. FYI. UMMC pays the City for fire protection since they have their own drinking water supply. Also pay for sewage disposal. The commish better figure on doing the same.
UMMC has their well as well(haha) as several other big facilities in Jackson. Hell Cintas has their own well. Oh well!
King Mayor Lumumba would like y'all to come out tonight for the fireworks in his honor. Based on the sparse attendance for his swearing in this morning, and even taking into account that Fat Melvin takes up two seats, there is sure to be enough parking and seating.
Lord have mercy they are gonna unleash Godzilla !!! Still never returning to the fair. Sorry.
Dr. Charles will fix it.
Dr. Charles couldn’t fix Kojak’s haircut.
Literally digging out of Jackson.
Well done 12:01.
Wells can be contaminated too.
My grandmother's is permanently contaminated.
So...won't he be embarrassed if the test shows he's tapped into a contaminated acquifer? And who's going to keep testing it?
Would have been better to put this money toward treatment plant repairs.
What a politically pandering jerk Gibson is.
" Robert St. John doesn't want a repeat Jeff Good's pizza place experience."
Think or say anything about about Robert St. John,
The man is a brilliant restauranteur and businessman.
But I thought he was too smart to sign on to this project in "The Fondren" .
Great concept, but I feel the reality of Jackson will kill it within a year.
Note to "The Fondren" crowd ... I'm not being negative, only realistic.
