Monday, the City of Jackson in partnership with The Jackson Resource Center, Mississippi Association of Educators, Jackson Federation of Teachers, and others announced the citywide Stuff the Truck Back to School Event which is set to take place Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 12:00pm – 3:00pm at the Jackson Convention Complex.
During the announcement, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said, “This campaign is very instrumental in making certain that our young people, as we start the school year, are prepared with the resources necessary for learning. What we have learned over time is that there is such a gap between the resources that students have across our district that we want to make certain that all of our children have all of the resources that are important to the education process.”
The Stuff the Truck Back to School Event will help to create a pantry which will give educators access to resources to help meet the academic needs of elementary and middle school students attending Jackson Public Schools.
“We will have an 18-wheeler that we will be working to stuff with back to school supplies as well as uniforms that we will be able to supply to the Jackson Public School’s Resource Center.”, said Keyshia Sanders, Manager of Constituent Services.
The effort is much needed according to Carol Redfield-Mims, Uniserv Director for Mississippi Association of Educators, who said, “The lack of resources is so great. JPS already has a system in place where schools can reach out to them and request certain resources, so we just want to add to what they already have in place to make sure that there’s an abundance of it and make sure it’s equally distributed in the right places.”
Donations are already being accepted for items such as EXPO markers, highlighters, 3-ring notebooks, wide-ruled paper, crayons, 70-page wide-ruled spiral notebooks, 2-pocket folders, backpacks, composition notebooks, pencils, pens, and glue sticks.
Volunteers are also needed to help out on July 28th from 8:00am – 5:00pm.
Donation drop-off locations are listed below:

5261 Greenway Drive Ext. 4950 I-55 North Frontage Rd.

Wow, always looking for a handout. What about self responsibility?
Don’t have kids if you can’t or refuse to support and raise them.
Another handout request.
Donations for a legitimate need should always be lauded and supported. However, when the genesis of the "need" arises from bad budgeting and mismanagement of tax dollars by government leaders, then it becomes a self-inflicted budget mistake of the leaders, and a self-serving need created solely by the leaders looking for a citizen bailout, instead of a "legitimate" need that couldn't be foreseen. Stop spending so much money on administration and non-teaching positions. Instead, spend the tax dollars on teachers, classrooms and teaching materials for the students. There will be plenty of money for education if the administrative fat is excised. That's just my $00.02 worth.
I'm a white 54 year old male. BS and MBA Any broke pecker wood can go to their nearest dirt cheap and get all the school crapo they need for little or nothing. I take my own trash off and often shop at dumpsters too. ha Where are the Churches anymore when it comes to supporting the widows and orphans needs. Stuffing a truck with school supplies is about as ridiculous as Entergy MS "mo-bi-lizing" at the fairgrounds before a storm event. All for the cameras.
How much do the Mississippi association of educators members pay in dues each year? Maybe they should just use that money to buy the supplies.

The flyer says, "Donations are already being accepted for items such as EXPO markers..."
EXPO markers?! What idiot(s) would give young kids EXPO markers, and why would kids need their own as "school supplies" anyway. Granted, the likelihood of issues is small - very few babies actually suffocate themselves with dry cleaning bags but no one with a lick of common sense would suggest that giving them to babies is good idea.
For those that don't know, dry erase and permanent markers have chemicals in them that make them subject to inhalation abuse. It isn't a huge issue, but why would educators suggest ANYTHING that has even a small potential for harm and in no way necessary for education?
@1:06 - Your comment about Entergy mobilization at the fairgrounds prior to a storm being for photo purposes is ridiculous. Prior to large storms, power companies from as far away as Kansas mobilize and head to staging areas within striking distance of the impact area. Sometimes, on the road, we'll pass thirty or so bucket trucks and other responders heading into the heart of our state to assist. They have to assemble and park somewhere.
You might see news coverage of staging, but you won't see it being hyped by Entergy or any other power company.
Turn your cap around and be sure your generator is full of non-ethanol. Try not to be stupid.
"Food and Fun for the entire family". That's always code for an invitation to some obese woman to drag five kids to the location to scarf up on some free groceries and pops.
This crap is as senseless as 'angel tree'. And my opinion of angel tree is any woman over the course of ten or eleven months ought to be able to round up enough money for two or three eight dollar Christmas presents....and ought to be able to do it on her own with very little training or knowledge of finance. But, by the hundreds, they wait for some well meaning (and guilt ridden) gainfully employed person to pluck their child's name off the tree and 'gimmee'.
More "free stuff."
Wow. This is supposed to be the hospitality state. Mississippi is, allegedly though apparently only in theory, the most giving state in the nation. It's just a pack of crayons and pencils, for goodness' sake, and maybe some paper towels and markers if one is feeling extravagant, people. Trust me, RCSD, Pearl Public Schools, all the surrounding area schools ARE DOING THE SAME THING!!! Are you kidding me?? Do none of you have children in school, or are you just all men commenting and you don't know shit about getting school supplies for your kids because your wives/girlfriends/baby mamas do all that stuff, AND get all the emails from the teachers begging for supplies and volunteers ALL YEAR LONG!!!
You should be ashamed at your complete callousness. I take care of my kids, yes, and send some extra stuff all year too. Because it takes a lot of money to live in the Brandon school district, on one income, no other means of support, and still have gas, lights and car insurance, and I make a seemingly decent income (40ish). I can't imagine how other single mothers/fathers with no support are making it on less. So, yeah. I'm gonna send an extra pack of crayons and some construction paper and some clorox wipes. Maybe this year, I will buy an extra backpack with something cool in it.
I have a few suggestions regarding "stuff the truck" and with Valvoline as a co-sponsor it would go easier.
All of you people who are complaining about donating should just shut up and not donate. I donate to as many worthy causes as I'm able to afford because I am very blessed to have a job with a decent income. Helping someone less fortunate is never a burden. When I was PTA president, I saw teachers spending their own salaries on supplies for children in their classrooms. Our PTA organization purchased school supplies, paid for lunches, bought uniforms, and even supplied money for needy kids to attend school field trips. Some people need to look in a mirror and see if they really like the person who is looking back at them. For $1.00 you can buy a ruler, a pack of crayons, and a pack of pencils, and it will make you and a needy child feel special. JUST DO IT.
Why not call it “Make Jackson Great Again”? The slogan is already so close!
"Stuff the truck" reminds me of a previous blog post about a highway patrolman at a rest stop on i55 south.
