Wall Street Journal calls Ole Miss "embarrassing"

The Wall Street Journal's "Grid of Shame" named Ole Miss's football programs as one of the most embarrassing in the NCAA.

College football is often as much about scandal as what happens on the scoreboard, which means that every program must be judged on two separate and sometimes conflicting criteria: How good are they? And how ashamed should fans be about rooting for them?

With the season kicking off for most of the country this weekend, there is no better time to settle both arguments with The Wall Street Journal’s annual Grid of Shame, an exercise that quantifies how every school rates both in terms of playing football—and the nefarious depths it has waded through to attain that status.

The Grid answers both these questions for the top programs in the country—all 64 teams from the five major conferences, plus a handful of others that belong in any college football conversation.

The horizontal axis shows how good the team is projected to be based on a survey of preseason evaluations. Some of these use the old-fashioned eye test, others rely on complex algorithms. That’s the easy part. What’s harder is what happens on the vertical axis—or shame meter.

We begin with cold numbers, a weighted calculation of academic performance, recent NCAA violations and probation, attendance figures, athletic-department subsidies and player arrests. Schools were also dinged if they have a dubious history with injury mismanagement—like the handful of programs involved in concussion-related lawsuits.
But those figures don’t capture everything, and no program demonstrates this better in 2016 than Baylor. How do you rank a school that mishandled sexual assault cases involving football players, a scandal so seismic that it cost president Ken Starr and football coach Art Briles their jobs?

This is where the “ick” factor comes in. When the numbers didn’t capture the magnitude of the problems at a particular program, we punished the teams that brought shame to their fans in a way that didn’t show up in any data set....

Rest of article.

That looks about right. Faux-couth fans -- both the whiskey-soaked, red-cheeked, pot-bellied men and their prescription medicated women -- sacrifice all at the altar of young, urban athletes, sending their money to please the athletes' parents and their daughters to please the athletes. After 5 years, those not named Manning are cast aside like an empty bottle of liquor or Cymbalta. Delusions are strongest this time of year for the herd of Lafayette Lemmings, but the sad reality of their mediocrity will soon set in and the rest of us will, once again, receive a welcome respite from their braying. 'Tis the season, y'all.

This grid has a short memory. What about programs that have a long history of crooked behavior, enabling their current AP rankings, but just haven't been busted recently?

Let me guess. 9:12 is an Alabama fan, who of course is not an alumni just like the majority of their bandwagon fanbase. Jealous loser.

As a Rebel fan, I've been living for the day we plausibly claim to be the Florida State of the SEC. And there we are right next to them on the chart! Woo-hoo!!!

Have you heard the testimony tapes from the FSU rape allegations against Jameis Winston? "Yeah she fell up the stairs once" "we regularly run trains on cougars it is what we do". Heisman -"The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity." Not a lot of integrity when you are running a train.

UNC 20 Years of a bogus academic program. Holy crap

Ole Miss is paying players and it is so blatant everyone can see it. The twitter fiasco at the draft was just a tipping point. I think the worst thing Ole Miss does is oversigning. Look that up. I can't wait for a documentary to come out about the process of oversigning. http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/oversigning-explained-2016-recruiting/

Auburn needs to be a few grids lower come on... read "as the plains burn"

Duke lacross rape. Football players were at the party

STANFORD just had a kid released from prison who raped someone. He spent 3 months of 6 months sentence in jail.

Vanderbilt JEEZ.. TYPE The word vanderbilt in google and the word rape pops up next to it. Initiate the search and there are 6 cases against athletes for rape

Notre Dame just had 5 players sent to the house for guns and drugs.

ps. no wonder you wound up working for me, your creative writing stinks.

Duke Lacrosse rape? you mean the case that was totally fabricated by the accuser but runined 3 men's lives? That one?

Not positive but I don't think the stanford guy was a football player. he was a swimmer.

Just clarifying your post a little.

You don't go from utter crap to top ten this quickly, without cheating. There's just no way possible to suddenly start getting enough good players to commit to your historically crap program, without cheating. Sorry guys, it's true. Had ole miss slowly started working their way up the sec ranks over many seasons, them we might believe they had done it truthfully.

Btw, my school is very admirable, but not a powerhouse.

10:12 am sums up the Rebels' attitude about all this perfectly. "Sure, we cheat, but damnit you better respect us!!!"

Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Still. I almost pity you people. LOL.

10:13, you're right. The only way a head coach can win 7 games in his first season in the SEC is by cheating. Then, by cheating, he might be able to improve the team's record by one game every season. Cheating is how that happens. When you "suddenly" go from 7 wins to 8 to 9 to 10 . . . it MUST be cheating.

I know Tunsil shouldn't have been smoking whatever he was smoking, but how is that the coach's fault? Or the program's?  Furthermore, scholarships to college can't be eaten. They can't generate electricity. I know, I know, he should have budgeted better. It sounds like to me, though, that a lot of this anger at Ole Miss is really just misplaced. If Tunsil and all the other poor people (not just black poor people) knew their place they wouldn't deign to enter the hallowed halls of academe.  They'd go to work in the factory somewhere. If they want to go to college to better themselves then they should just eat shoe leather and sleep in the dark--when they aren't on a football field making millions for the college that rewards them so richly.

"didn't show up in any data set." That means that no matter how much the school tries to distance itself from the Confederate flag and Dixie and Colonel Reb, etc. the Ivory Tower liberals in the northeast will continue to loathe and punish Ole Miss because it's far easier to point out the mote in Ole Miss' eye than remove the beam in their own.

And how about addressing the fact that the SEC office is stacked with Alabama alumni who continually turn a blind eye to their offenses. The a$$wipe who claimed you don't go from bad to good in a season without cheating seems to forget where Alabama was the year before Saban rolled into town with his under-the-table money men. It's easy to win when you can cheat and be covered because no one is watching the watchers.

SEC Headquarters, Alabama. Illuminati.
To help with roster management, Nick Saban grinds the bones of injured players into a fine powder which is used to draw the chalk lines on the practice field.
The Pope actually resigned because Nick Saban felt his homilies were not up to the Alabama standard and recruited a younger, five-star Cardinal to take over. The Conclave is merely for show, and only Saban and Mal Moore know who the next Pope will be.
To convince players to sign with Alabama instead of rival schools, Saban takes them to the Tuscaloosa Chick-Fil-A on Sundays when it opens just for him.
Dinosaurs did not actually go extinct millions of years ago, Nick Saban recruited them to another planet, where consequently he was accused of oversigning by other species.
Approximately three months from now, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution will be driven into bankruptcy, be forced to cease operations, have its staff liquidated and its offices re-purposed into a distance learning annex for the University of Alabama because of the paper’s continuing insolence.

Not an Ole Miss fan but this is just silly. It's designed to generate clicks on their website.

A good example is where they placed Notre Dame. Yes they had six kids recently arrested. Four for marijuana possession (is that still illegal?), one because his legally owned handgun wasn't registered in Indiana and one who allegedly assaulted a cop. Those last two will probably be thrown out of school, not just off the team. The other four will be disciplined, something that wouldn't happen at most other schools, especially in the SEC.To counter that, ND has the number one graduation rate in college football. Players are required to graduate within four years of enrollment, not five, and they get a real degree, not some type of BS physical ed. degree. They have no NCAA violations or probation. Yet, somehow Notre Dame is more shameful than Alabama, Oregon etc.

It's all nonsense.but, you know what, we're talking about it so they did their job correctly.

I was told by an unnamed official that most of the anonymous complaints that are being looked at by the NCAA are coming from two sources. Mississippi State and Alabama fans. Some are so ridiculous that they are discarded immediately. NCAA looks into these complaints and have found nothing more than what they had settled two years ago. It is a shame that some fans will stoop to that low to try to stop good recruiting. Too bad that they show themselves as poor sports and even worse looser

I like your creative writing. It made me laugh. Ole Miss' aristocracy just can't stand criticism. They are the center of the known universe and all that jazz. One fifth Old Money, four fifths posers.

I'm sorry...is someone pretending that Ole Miss is doing anything out of the ordinary in the world of major college football?

That's a bit too much sanctimony to stomach.

It is not enough that they are buying players. On top of that Freeze wants everyone to think he is some sort of great Christian and knows nothing about buying players. I played football for a SEC team in years past. It is common knowledge that players can ask for "assistance". This isn't an enticement to play at that school nor is it assistance for anything other than a one time emergency issue. The student athlete assistance fund is a NCAA item.

It was explained as any other individual in the community asking friends or family for some temporary assistance in a time of need. The NCAA understood that things happen. A good example of this is Alabama after the tornado. Many players got assistance since all of their belongings were wiped away.

Tunsil "asking" for such assistance for his mom, does not mean that there was some nefarious arrangement at that school. It might have meant that Tunsil remembered being told of the student athlete assistance fund and, while pulling on a bong while wearing a gas mask, he thought he cold get moms' rent paid.

The whole investigation of THE University of Mississippi can be summed up in a few words. Don't beat God (aka Nick Saban) 2 years in a row. He has placed too many of his cronies in high positions not only in the SEC office but in the NCAA offices as well.

I guess Ole Miss can join the other 7 teams that lost this weekend. OM fans are ass hats. I can't wait for the tv ban and the post season ban. It will be a USC-esque/penn state penalty, lack of institutional control.

My frustration:
I can make an excuse for my team. 2 starting CB's tore acl the week of the game. The replacement was a guy who was a WR the week before and an OLB trained for zone coverage. No one wanted to play a backup freshman with zero SEC experience. The result was USA passing yards through the roof. Anyone notice the rushing yards?

2 QBs I can't stand that, pick one and stick with the decision Dan. If you don't like him, qb option him up the middle until he has an injury and put in the second string. Ohio State had 3 (5 star) qbs playing for them and the team imploded. Anyone remember the legend Chris Leak getting boo'd off the field so Tebow could play? Anyone watch Texas v Notre Dame? What I saw was a coach who does not trust his starter when the game is on the line. That program will not make it to 6 games being successful. 2 QB systems do not work select your starter period.

@9:42 Serious question. Is a mother's utility bill at her own house considered a legitimate thing to ask for from this fund? The texts read as if it was a recurring thing that he asked for every month as well as his own apt. rent. Thanks in advance if anybody can answer the question.

Coach Be Winkin'... said...

You 'Grovers' kinda spoke too soon. Your 'one man show' quarterback and your 'all about me' coach couldn't get it done Monday night.

And, 10:27...NO, a mother's utility bill or any other mother's obligation is NOT a legitimate use of the fund. It's, in fact, a violation. The coaches knew that but ignored it for 'Bong Boy'.

Anonymous said...

I'm just glad the Grovers didn't have to play the Jags. Who would have thunk they would be so good?

Anonymous said...

Not a "grover", but I am 9:42 and did bring up the student athlete assistance fund.

To 10:27 am, anyone can ask for anything, it's the payment of that would be an issue and, NO, paying rent is not part of the deal. It's a one-off emergency sort of thing.

Tunsil asking for help could be a result of the existence of the fund, and his ignorance. Tunsil receiving help for mom's utilities (I've not heard that money was given) would be a violation.

His asking is not money changing hands. And the supposed texts are suspect at best. There are several questions regarding the validity of the texts in how they are presented. From time stamps to missing bubbles that show on one screen, but not another.

IMO, it's going to be the stepfather trying to win his lawsuit or force settlement from Tunsil by altering texts.

And you MS State fans talking about this need to steer clear of glass houses. You had someone trying to negotiate a big payout to Cam Newton on MS State's behalf.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
