State Auditor Stacey Pickering issued the following press release:
In an effort to clarify the recent questions regarding the Mississippi Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) audit of the City of Madison, and all 45 municipalities and public entities selected, please find the information below, as well as attachments detailing the entire PERS audit process.
Annually, PERS contracts audits to perform the test work on census data of each agencies pension plan. Currently, this program is in its second phase of implementation. PERS begins the process by generating a random sample of any governmental agency that contributes to the state retirement systems (It is this year’s random sample from PERS which included the City of Madison). After the random sample is collected, PERS contracts a private CPA firm to conduct the audits.
At this point, PERS requests that the State Auditor’s Office send a letter to the selected parties notifying them of their selection within the sample. This letter serves two functions. The first, and seemingly most obvious, is to notify the selected agencies of the upcoming audit. The second is to validate the contracted auditing firm that will be conducting the audit, in this case KPMG, and to ensure the cooperation of the agency to be audited.
This is an established program conducted solely by PERS and a contracted, private CPA firm. Let me be clear, the aforementioned audits are not selected, performed or amended by the State Auditor’s Office in any way.

Who names their child Greg Gregory? Man that is horrible.
MHB is a paranoid witch. Pickering won handily and has no need to take such an obvious, public shot at the old crow. She is toast as far as anything other than small town mayor.
Side note: Audits aren't going to look so pretty with new standards concerning pensions.
Cartoon is great.......love the teeth and dice.
Love that RV! Notice the massage beads on the seatback, the dice hanging from the mirror, the itsy-bitsy wheels, and the little rathole wheel wells (which go nicely with the driver's beady little eyes).
"each agencies pension plan" (sic) 9:55, I knew a George George once.
No need to do anything obvious...like purchasing an RV with campaign funds, using it for a home away from home at Disney, or defying a judge's orders to allow access to public records.
Riiiight Stacey. And Lois Lerner and the IRS didn't target conservative groups either. What a punk. Clearly there is backlash from this, or he wouldn't go to lengths to lay blame on PERS.
MNB is a paranoid, bloated windbag. As if Pickering needed to exact revenge on her after the election. It seems to me the voters saw through all of her BS, and gave her what she deserved.
Let her stay in her little Potemkin's Village, where she can continue to big the big fish (whale) is an very small pond.
And where do you live 10:02? Ridgeland, Canton???? Every "Small" town wishes they had a Mayor as dedicated to their citizens as Mary is.
I have no love for Pickering (or politicians in general), but this seems like a non-starter in terms of Pickerng influencing Madison's selection.
It's just Mary Hawkins Butler and her butterfly pin on another witch hunt. The only problem is that Hawkins Butler is the witch! She got her ass beat by Stacey Pickering. Can you imagine if she had been elected auditor. You would have seen a witch hunt then - not state-wide, only in Madison County. She ran on one platform - I'm going after Madison County and everbody that's against me!
The RV would be even funnier with a "I Love DisneyWorld" sticker or "To Fort Wilderness or Bust!".
10:02, 11:50, 1:25
Damn, Stacey, she really gets under your skin, doesn't she. What a joke.
I bet Rudy is laughing his ass off.
Hey, 9:55 - His momma and daddy named him Greg, and he is a good friend of mine.
Who named you Anonymous?
Mayor Mary may have opened a can of worms that she wished she hadn't. Pissing off an elected politician is like herpes...the gift that keeps on giving.
We're talking about the KPMG that audited Singing River Health, right? The same KPMG that is barred from filing personal tax returns in Mississippi?
3:57. Mayor Mary isn't worried about that pissant.
Didn't our genius auditor have to file amended tax returns because he abused campaign funds? So he's reelected and has a vendetta for having to pay honest taxes lime the rest of us. He will self destruct before his term is up. As a voter, I see this guy as just like Hillary Clinton.
In the Pickering PAID ADVERTISEMENT appearing elsewhere on this blog, he looks almost exactly like one of the deputies on "In The Heat Of The Night" with Archie Bunker. Is this guy a bumpkin or what?
Neither the mayor nor the city of Madison has any reason to worry about this pissant.
Look no further as to how Marshall Ramsey pulls his punches to protect his sacred GOP cows than this cartoon.
Once again, I'm so glad that the city of madison gets to keep their wonderful queen. And the rest of the state is happy too. You madisonites just keep drinking the kool-aid.
12:37 Why in the world would you possibly think that every small town would wish they had a mayor like MHB???? I live in Madison County and if she were my mayor I would move as quickly as possible! All Madison county residents who live in other small towns would not have her as our mayor if you gave her to us. I can promise you that those of you who like her are welcome to keep her; because no one else wants her.
11:03: Can you name 'other small towns' in Madison county? Let's see, well, there's Flora (a booming conservative community that will be the shining star in 20 years), and there's Canton (Jackson Lite), and, well, I know there are others. Oh, Ridgeland. Gene McGee has sat at Hawkins-Butler's feet for several decades. There's Tommy's Trading Post... is Livingston a town yet... There must be others. Where's my map?
"Look no further as to how Marshall Ramsey pulls his punches to protect his sacred GOP cows than this cartoon."
Uh, both figures in he cartoon are in the GOP. Would you mind telling us which of the two that the voices are telling you he is protecting?
I don't believe Marshall has any cows. He has a real nice dog, though.
Some posting here are ignorant. Did you not read KF's explanation at the beginning?
For those who remain uninformed, GASB has been effective for some time now. PERS has been on top of GASB informing its agencies of the requirements. And those requirement are extensive from the accounting side.
And for those throwing stones, did you ever think of contacting the leadership at PERS to answer your questions as to how this audit came about? Ah, the leadership is available to you on the PERS website. And I bet that Pickering walked into Pat Robertson's office and informed her that he wanted to stick it to Mary. Knowing Pat, she would have thrown(or had)his ass thrown into the street.
As for Ramsey's cartoon -- sometimes he hits the mark, other times he misses by a mile.
Enough of butterfly pins, RVs and DisneyWorld, I will be voting for Joce Pritchett.
Pickering should be indicted before the election...so should Hillary Clinton.
