Death to the Machine

A huge earthquake took place in Desoto County last night as the Kuykendall machine took a clobberin' from The Thing known as Empower Mississippi.  The Desoto County legislators made a name for themselves over the last four years in fighting all educational reforms that came through the House.  A PAC was formed by conservative activists, candidates were recruited, and the fight was taken to the home turf of Milton Kuykendall and his machine.  The results? See for yourself:
The money each candidate raised is in ().

Criswell, Dana 1,991 57% ($34,360)
Hamilton, Eugene(i)1,497 43% ($30,525)

Hopkins, Steve 1,717 54% ($37,365)
Jennings, Wanda (i)1,477 46%  ($21,200 but spent $39,356)

Eubanks, Dan 1,475 53%  ($12,044)
Alday, Gene (i) 707 26% ($19,600)
Bramlett, Julian 577 21% ($9,246)

Henley, Ashley 798 57% ($28,200)
Nelson, Pat (i) 612 43% ($67,230)

What is ironic is Speaker of the House Phillip Gun backed the incumbents despite the fact he will now have more reliable votes on education from the winning candidates. Some of his team said they were backing them because they did a good job in the 2015 session. Yes they did, because competition is a wonderful thing and incumbents behave better when they know they have competition.  The Parent's Campaign isn't the only group that cares about education.  Hat's off to Grant Callen for pulling off this feat despite all the insults and jeers from politicos and so-called conservatives.

Well done. About time we have more Republicans who actually vote like conservatives.

I don't follow Desoto politics, so forgive my questions.

What does this portend as far as Common Core in Mississippi?

How about the prospects for letting a Hinds County judge decide how much MAEP has to be funded, no matter what the needs are for the rest of the state budget?

Anonymous said...

The RINO herd up north was thinned. That is good.

Anonymous said...

9:22 - I could be mistaken, but I believe each of these candidates is strongly against common core, and they made it a campaign issue. Not sure that Initiative 42 was an issue or not.

Phillip Gunns backing is not necessarily a good thing. He's going to get voted out next round. Like it or not, to try to touch Mississippi's flag is political suicide.

Sue Townsend's outright victory was a HUGE repudiation of the good ol' boys in Rankin County. Let the housecleaning begin.

Grant did a great job in Desoto County. I wouldn't have believed he'd get four heads up there as trophies, but he sure did. Congratulations Grant!

Gunn did what he had to do - protect his members (even weak ones). If he doesn't do that, he has a real leadership problem.

"Phillip Gunns backing is not necessarily a good thing. He's going to get voted out next round. Like it or not, to try to touch Mississippi's flag is political suicide." @10:10

You, sir, are in idiot. He gets elected by people from Clinton, who appreciate his courageous stance.

@11:36

I'm from his district. He's lost my vote, my wifes vote, and many of my friends votes.

Anonymous said...

I am from Clinton as well. He gets my vote, my wife's vote, our entire families (both sides) vote, and everybody in my church's vote.

We are all black Democrats, and switching over. It is "that" big of a deal.

Anonymous said...

@ 11:56, for whom will you be voting instead?

Anonymous said...

Did Clinton hold a refendum on the flag? Somehow I missed that. What were the results of the vote?

Anonymous said...

His flag stance notwithstanding, the turning out in DeSoto + Bomgar gives Gunn an enormous power swing on education votes in the House. 5 new votes who seek education reform, and the loss of 4 opposed, is really, really big.

Anonymous said...

12:11 hit the nail on the head as to the real reason Gunn said that about the flag. He needs the black vote, and he knows it.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Gunn's district is 24% black VAP, he really needs the black vote. *rolls eyes*

Anonymous said...

To get elected in Clinton? Right. What a dumbass. you right wingNUTS just won't let go of that stupid, racist flag.

Anonymous said...

Chris McDaniel is smiling from his true conservative compound. This is only the beginning. Fight Chris fight!

Anonymous said...

Gunns district is more more than 24% black. That figure might have been accurate five years ago. Not anymore.

Common Curr said...

Gunn's district is 24% black voting age population. Given the fact that only 9% turn out, you do the math, 5:04.

Anonymous said...

If only 9% turned out then McDaniel would be our senator.

504 this 1:54: You may be right as I'm sure the demographics have changed since then. I'm getting my numbers from here, BTW: http://www.maris.state.ms.us/pdf/MS2010HouseDist/Concert1c_ver1.3.Longreport.pdf

7:48 - keep drinking that koolaid. Chrissie tried to sell it all last year and there are still a few 'true believers' but anyone that has analyzed the actual results found that his pitch was about as factual as everything else he tried to sell.

Anonymous said...

I'm confused how Chris McDaniel is smiling about these election results. Go look at the Jones County results. He endorsed a candidate for Superintendent of Education who lost. His group was certainly helping Mayor Mary and she got a whopping 30% in Jones County. He and his team wanted Pickering to lose b/c of the Cochran race and Pickering got 70% statewide with about as bad of press as you can have the final week.

Anonymous said...

8:47 - I'm certainly no McD fan, but Cochran gained 5,000 votes in precincts where Obama won 90%+ in 2012. Then add the black vote from other precincts and you have your margin and then some.

Anonymous said...

The only black votes Gunn is worried about are those of the black members of the House, and he's likely to get them with his stance on the flag.

Anonymous said...

... but anyone that has analyzed the actual results ...

You clearly have not analyzed the actual results.

Additionally, Robert Foster won the open House #28 and Rob Goudy is in a runoff in the open House #24. Desoto County will be sending 6 new faces to Jackson in 2016, all 6 (assuming Rob Goudy wins) more Conservative than Phillip Gunn--that's for sure.

8"47 here. I'll put my analysis of the votes up against you and anyone else you want to bring to the table. Your and 10:03's 'quick math' is both wrong and misses much more that happened. Both McD and TC increased their votes by 30k, so to throw all TC's into the mix as being black Dems misses the mark completely. And I'd love to see that list of precincts that 10:03 states as fact that provided 5k votes. Not there. But to you and Chrissie's other crazy supporters (that obviously ain't very deep looking at how his candidates faired this week) I've got a long list of beachfront property in Iowa to sell since you will believe anything if its said often enough.

Anonymous said...

You haven't studied the precincts 7:04 PM. That much is plainly obvious. You don't have a clue. When you have some real precinct data let us know.

It was all about Charter Schools. Follow the money. Lots of dirty, dishonest PAC mailers did not reflect in individual campaign reports. The incumbents were all very conservative, but did not get in bed with the PAC money supporting Charter Schools at all costs. The new folks are fine folks. Time will tell if they will support the PAC Charter School Machine politics or vote with their constituents.

Anonymous said...

This is 10:03, again I'm no McD fan but the facts are the facts.

I made this sheet awhile back, these are precincts where Obama won 90% or more in 2012. Cochran won big in these precincts.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
