Update on our "fiery" car crash today: Law enforcement sources said the two yewts drove into a church parking lot in South Jackson. A JPD officer working security asked them if they were going to church. They said they just wanted to use the bathroom. He told them they were not for use by the public and that they needed to leave. One of them fired several shots in the air as they left. The officer notified JPD. They were driving down the street in one direction while a JPD cruiser passed them but going in the opposite direction. The police officer made a u-turn as she saw they were speeding but they were completely out of sight when she turned around as they high-tailed it at a high rate of speed. They later crashed. The police officer at no time gave chase because she lost sight of the suspect. In other words, they probably thought there was a chase for them even if none took place.
What the police did not know at the time is that the "victims" are suspected of committing an armed robbery this morning before the church incident.
Meanwhile, here is the Facebook profile picture of the driver, D'ante Steel. He was arrested a year ago for auto theft and is 19 years old.
Original post: A carjacking and police chase went up in flames for one local punk. WLBT reported:
WLBT crews are on the scene of a fatal accident on Greenview Drive and McDowell Road in Jackson involving two people. JPD has confirmed that the passenger of the car died at the scene. The driver has been taken to UMMC with critical injuries. Two men were in a Nissan Maxima driving on Greenview Drive when the car hit a tree and caught fire.
Jackson Police said the Maxima is a carjacked vehicle from a recent robbery and had been involved in a series of crimes just before the accident occurred. The family of the man who died in the accident has identified him as 18-year-old Nikey Richey. Family members say Richey burned inside the car. JPD has not confirmed the identity of the individuals involved.
This deadly chase wasn't Richey's first joyride. The Columbus Packet reported in August 2013:
Saturday afternoon joy ride lead to the arrest of three Columbus teens. Deshawn Stevens, Elijah Richey and Nikey Cashe Richey were arrested and charged with posession of stolen property after the white Cadillac Stevens was driving was reported stolen. According to police reports, the teens were pulled over in front of Autozone on Alabama Street in East Columbus. The car was spotted coming through the intersection of MLK Jr. and Main Street when the tag was checked by officer Joseph Strevel. Debbie Millern/The Packet Officer Joseph Strevel radios for backup.Meanwhile, he called himself "Badazz" on his Facebook page:
Stevens said they had bought the car in Jackson and had come to Columbus to spend the night in a hotel “with some females.” Richey, a passenger in the vehicle, was also charged with providing false information to law enforcement after he said his name was “Keshaw Miller.” A fourth passenger in the vehicle, Clifford Johnson, was also taken into custody but he was not charged with any misconduct. All of the occupants of the vehicle said they were headed to the store to buy cake and ice cream for a birthday party in the park. The three teens were held in the Lowndes County Juvenile Detention Center until they were transported back to Jackson by the Jackson Police Department.
His pictures show a devotion to the thug life as show in these 2012 Facebook pictures:
